Very interesting year. Westfield isn't running away with the region like we thought they would. Centreville has been better than expected. Lake Braddock looks goods and SOCO has recovered pretty well from their loss to Westfield. Madison and South Lakes impressed me the most but I wanna see how they perform against the usual powerhouse teams. Hayfield looks decent as well. Anyone know what went wrong with Centreville last game? It might've been the most lopsided Westfield vs Centreville matchup ever, and there have been some really lopsided once in the past (2007 and 2013).

But then again a program that's been to the last 5 straight 6A North Region Championships will bring that out. South County's offense may be improved under McDaniels but does he play defense? Remember that Delaney for WF missed 3 FG's in that game. SOCO scored all 13 points in what, the last 4 minutes of the game. Johnson for WF also went 1-14 I think passing the ball. The score may have been close, the game was not. Simmons has finally simplified the playbook for his QB & Cockrill finally got his hands on the ball which is why WF's offense looked so good last Friday night. Petrillo and Free returned from their concussions on the other side which is why the defense played well. In other words WF does what it typically does year in and year out as the playoffs approach, figure out who and what works best for them and go with it. Remember last year when they muddled through the playoffs then made the switch at QB, if that hadn't been done they probably would never have won state, hell, they might not have even made it. Say what you want, Simmons and his staff certainly have proven they know how to get to the post season and advance in his tenure as WF's head coach. May not always be pretty or sit well with their fans but it apparently works....

And remember God is on our side too. Westfield is blessed and special.

BTW, Westfield didn't really have any impressive victories last regular season, didn't stop them from winning it all. The Stone Bridge game wasn't impressive, starting QB from SB went out in the first quarter. Robinson game was slightly impressive but WF had a number of missed opportunities and maybe a FG or two.

From what I understand he had plenty of other options when it came to different positions, just didn't want to accept that fact that he had been beaten by a better QB. He was used allover the field last year, and played some QB. Just couldn't handle the success of McDaniel's and took off.

They play Herndon and Chantilly on the road to wrap up the regular season. Currently South Lakes, Lake Braddock, and South County are higher seeds than them but assuming Westfield beats Herndon and Chantilly, they will finish with at least the 3 seed as either LB or SOCO will fall below them due to the regular season finale. So they will likely be getting at least 2 home games in the playoffs with one of them being a cakewalk. South Lakes will fall below Westfield if they lose to Hayfield but I don't think that it will happen. I see the top 4 being: Lake Braddock, South Lakes, Westfield, and SOCO. Each team has a major flaw. Lake Braddock in my opinion isn't as talented as the other 3, South Lakes lacks playoff experience, Westfield lacks motivation and the ability to stay healthy, and SOCO lacks discipline.

And what Westfield Fan says actually makes some sense.
South Lakes is pretty talented, but will NOT make it to Regional Final.

If math is correct, LB and SC will be # 1 and # 4 seeds, just a matter of who wins. If that is case, they meet again in semi's. WF actually gets better draw as # 3 seed.
Look for Westfield v South County and So Co finally gets monkey off their back!

5A is similarly as difficult to predict. Look for Brooke Point to hold on to top seed there, beating Ponex. Stone Bridge should defeat Potomac Falls but watch their finale against Briar Woods! Broad Run has tough games against Robinson and Tuscarora, but should at least defeat Tusky and claim district. Top 6 teams in 5A can all win region.

4A? Dinwoodie v Woodgrove for state title, and Dinwoodie wins it.

The VHSL Power Point system is not based on straight up win-loss record thank goodness. You really want the only consideration for seeding to be going 10-0?

South Lakes *could* have scheduled a slightly tougher out of conference schedule since you ask what more they could have done. The power point system doesn't play favorites.

South Lakes had their schedule locked in two years ago. Also, they had their non-conference games chosen for them by county athletic director's from Arlington, Loudoun, and Fairfax. Schedule is same as last year. Two year cycles. With that being said, they have had the easiest schedule I have ever seen for a 6A team. It is an embarrassment. Their regular season schedule includes 7 absolute dogs, Briar Woods (under .500), Madison (nice win) and Hayfield ( slightly above average). What luck to have to go through that! You can't underestimate what it means to be able to dominate your opposition week in and week out, not playing anyone worth a damn. You stay healthy, fresh, and build confidence. it is why Stone Bridge tried to stay in conference with TJ, Lee, Edison, etc even after rest of Loudoun 5A powers were lumped together. Look at Falls Church schedule too. They are so mediocre and will get crushed in playoffs by first decent team they face. I mean, seriously, that schedule should make you chuckle.

I rethought my position, no year will ever be a tough year for Westfield. Next year God will sprinkle fairy dust on the team and they will be as good as ever.

Every year Westfield loses talent but seems to do okay the following year, sometimes not as well but better than most. They lost quite a bit last year, Scanlon, Clancy, Aiello, Huling, Pickett, Leo, Monticue, Johnson, Lutz, & Cordova. The year before that it was Gibson, Gray, Scoville, Moore, Brown, Kinney, O'Brien, Elbon, Martinez, Barrow, & Flores. You get my point, every year they lose quality kids that play a major role in their success. But every year they have a new group step in and fill the void. Not to mention the occasional transfer or "new" kid that just moved into the school's boundary. They have a good number of sophomores that will be capable of stepping in as juniors to help patch the holes.

Yep, Westfield does have size on both lines but only a couple true physical kids, mostly on the O-line. The D-line has size but other than Jewell none of them are that physical. That's why TC, Stone Bridge, Briar Woods, Robinson, & Centreville all had success running the ball. The LB's and secondary for Westfield are average in size to undersized, especially the DB's, so that adds to the susceptibility of their run defense. The real issue is that Westfield's defensive run philosophy has always been for the line to absorb blocks and allow the LB's to make tackles. This years squad the LB's typically have to dodge their own lineman being pushed back into their path to make tackles, not good.

I think it's a toss up between Lake Braddock & SOCO for the favorite, both have their flaws. SOCO's defense and ground game on offense is not quite as solid as last year. For Lake Braddock if you can contain Atkins on the ground, see Centreville game film, you can stop the ground attack, not as dangerous throwing the ball as they've been the past few seasons. Don't know much about South Lakes other than their schedule to date has been a bit soft. Madison was a good test but would have liked to have seen the outcome if both starting RB's for Madison had been able to play. Westfield, as stated above, just not as physical as years past, especially on defense. Their offense is too inconsistent, though it will be interesting to see if Simmons shrinking the playbook on offense helps Johnson and crew. The article in the Post last week prior to Centreville game indicated Simmons thought maybe they put too much on their QB. If that is the case and changes were made, then there might be hope after hanging 35 on the Wildcats, we'll see.

There are a few other solid teams, Madison certainly has the defense, Hayfield has the offense, West Potomac has shown some ability as well. I think this post season will be pretty wide open as to who will take 6A North, unlike in recent years. It's kind of refreshing even though I have my favorite!

I indeed have my favorite and stroke to thoughts of Westfield football every night.

ALL you Need to know, Panoni and/or Poythress will not sleep a wink if Black and Gold show up on their schedule week #2- #3 - #4 of Play-offs, guaranteed! and its beyond a Monkey, that's a full Grown Silver Back those two can't shake! they will be praying for the likes of a hayfield or South Lakes to do their heavy lifting for them.

The only way Westfield gets higher than the 4 seed is if one of the top teams loses unexpectedly. They cannot pass South Lakes, Lake Braddock, or South County if they win the games they are expected to. The loser of the Lake Braddock vs. South County game still out points an 8-2 Westfield team. Westfield will only get 2 extra pts for beating Herndon and 8 extra points for beating Chantilly. That won't be enough to catch the two Patriot league teams.

I think they would defeat South Lakes as well. Broad Run would also defeat South Lakes. Not hating on SL, just don't think they are that good, and do agree that Madison wins if either of their top 2 running backs plays in that game. Ridiculous. Briar Woods is way overrated. They have a great coach who can get his team to take games seriously. Westfield players just didn't put in the necessary effort and preparation for SB and BW this season - taking Loudoun County teams lightly is not a good idea. On the other hand, SB and BW pumped up playing Westfield like it was their super bowl. Briar Woods coach - who has 3 state championships - was on the radio saying their regular season win over Westfield was the highlight of his coaching career. They came to play and it showed. Westfield dicked around and waited for Centreville to get fired up for a game. Got no problem with ranking Stone Bridge #1. Westfield and Centreville not top 5. Good list. SoCo #1 until someone proves otherwise. I'd put West Po ahead of Hayfield, just because they have a more physical defense. Centreville too.

What makes you say that SOCO is #1 until someone proves otherwise? The only teams that have the right to say that are the current region champs (Westfield and Stonebridge) or an undefeated team (South Lakes). I wouldn't be suprised to see SOCO get thrashed again this year. This SOCO-Westfield rivalry reminds me a lot of the Westfield-Chantilly rivalry back in the day before Chantilly football went to shit.

It always comes back to Westfield, christ. In high school football, being last year's region champ means nothing. There's this thing called graduation, and kids don't get caught up in history the way adults and message board clowns do. Westfield has one impressive win, and it was last week. Beating SoCo in week 2 before McDaniels was established isn't terribly convincing at this point.

So far this season I've seen SoCo, West Po, Lake Braddock, Hayfield, Briar Woods, TC and Mount Vernon in person. SoCo had the best offense, Braddock the best defense. I don't see West Po slowing SoCo down enough to win this week. Week 10 between the Rams and Stallions should be the regular season game of the year.

Westfield was scary good last weekend. Heart attack scary good. I pity the fools who get in their way. Kudos to them for letting a couple of teams win so the rest of the region didn't just quit, which is what they were all threatening to do.
