So how good is West Potomac? Their best win is by 3 over a 1-4 Briar Woods. So they are 3-0 against teams that are combined 2-11. But they did play Lake Braddock into OT. ARe they a contneder for northern region?

West Po was outplayed by a very average Briar Woods team. They really were lucky to escape... however.... all of the top teams are flawed this year, more so than any other year in recent memory. ALL of them. No state champs will come from North Region this year.

That is the refrain EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Yet the Northern Region has come home with the state championship 2 of the last 3 seasons.

Briar Woods (-28.0) @ Lee

Chantilly @ Robinson (-14.0)
*Big spread for this one, but feel it might happen.

Hayfield (-34.0) @ McLean

Herndon @ Tuscarora (-21.0)

Lake Braddock (-7.0) @ Centreville
*A little torn, I think Centreville will play well at home and Lake Braddock is overrated. That being said, I'll take the Bruins.

Langley (-10.0) @ Fairfax

Marshall @ Falls Church (-7.0)
*This is the conference championship game right here.

Oakton @ Westfield (-14.0)
*Two teams going in opposite directions the last couple of weeks, but that being said I look for a bounce back for the Bulldogs.

Stuart (-7.0) @ Edison

Woodson @ West Potomac (-10.0)

Wakefield @ Mount Vernon (-20.0)

Washington-Lee @ South Lakes (-17.0)

West Springfield @ Stone Bridge (-16.0)

Yorktown @ Madison (-14.5)

South County (-14.0) @ TC Williams

Okay let's assume that Patriot, Concorde, and Liberty all had their counter parts per conference. Who would you compare in that form? LB-Wfield-Mad, SOCO-Oak-SL, WestPo-Rob-Hay, Woodson-CVille-York, TC-Tilly-WL, MtV-Herndon-Langley, WSfield-(--)-Fairfax, AnnaD-(--)-McLean.

And, I might want to increase the spread for Hayfield. Madison scored 42, and I'm inclined to believe that Mad's defense is superior, but Mr. "Keeney-Star" and Cobbs combination with about 4 RB's that provide with all different play styles seems like a nice mix.

This one is hard. Fairfax hasn't looked good at all this year. Langley also hasn't won a game, but I'm not sure why they haven't. I think Langley wins, and they'll probably cover.

If Madison stays healthy they may very well run away with the NR. I'm very serious about this too, I saw what they did to Oakton and they then proceeded to beat Stone Bridge the next week. Their defense is legitimately one of the best D's I've ever seen in this area.

Liberty really should be getting more love. Maybe not wholisticaly, but remember a few years back when people thought Liberty was nothing but the runt of the 6A NR. A year before they had major improvements, and I guarantee you two of the top 3 Liberty teams will be in the top 4. Who are the 2/3? I have no idea, but like the guy above said, Madison has a great defense, SL and Hay both have a high powered offense, but SL's defense seems to be more consistent than Hay. Though it's farfetched, but if the last few games play out in a such a way that Hay and Mad are fighting for the title, definitely game of the week.

This is where the Patriot looks really strong. They would have a good chance to win every match-up.

The bottom has grown tremendously in that district.

TC - physical and much more disciplined than years past

Mt. Vernon - Very dangerous on offense, already destroyed W-L(which is a realistic counter team in another district), also very young - just heard that almost everyone comes back next year - could be really changing the culture - who is the new coach? - how did he get them competitive so quick

West Springfield - such a disappointment - really thought they would compete - but as the lowest rated team in the patriot, they would destroy the worst teams in the other districts

I honestly feel like Oakton can pull the upset the way they held back Robinson's Offense was pretty amazing, Westfield is also down this year

any one who puts 8-9 in the box against Westfield will have a chance to beat them, TC was fast and Tough, they gave Westfield's offense fits all night, Johnson missed on a few deep balls against Stone Bridge and his receiver's returned the favor on a few as well. When the running game is non existent and you are 2-6 on the deep ball and your defense gets run over, your going to lose!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakton's offense does not compare to Stone Bridge, they will put up a fight but there won't be an upset. Look back over the last few years, WF loses at least one game in the regular season. When that happens everyone else except them pushes the panic button. They will get better, figure it out, and stop chucking the ball deep and start using the short passing game to set up the run. Remember last season, it was no different, except WF's defense last year was much tougher. I'm sure the coaches will figure that out too. But I do agree with many of these comments on here 6A North is up for grabs more so than anytime in the past 4-5 years.

WL a counnter team? In Liberty? Bullshit. Them and Yorktown are the king of the librrty scrubs. They have nothing on South Lakes, Madison, or Hayfield. It's a great win, FOR THEM. But it has no meaning on differentiating the district's overall skill. Especially now that CVille just beat LB... There is no more "top district" IMO. Hell, the only two remaining undefeated teams are in Liberty.

I do not always love everything Haddock does as a coach at CVILLE (Dude please figure out a way NOT to have your QB run over to you for every play) but must give him props for having the nut sax to go for two and the win after they got the touchdown to get within 7-6. Gutsy move that played off brilliantly.

Westfield got absolutely dominated in the 1st Quarter. The score won't reflect it but Q1 was a beat down. But the team that we saw the next 3 quarters look like the team that we thought we'd see coming into the year. The Bulldogs went on a 41-0 run despite not having stud defenders like Petrillo, Free, and Rivers, and while missing O-Linemen. NoVa is wide open this year and don't be surprised to see Westfield represent it again this year. I am very impressed with South Lakes, think they will be a big threat to anyone. That's my NR Finals prediction, South Lakes vs Westfield. Book It!

Dominated? Oakton had an initial drive then that was it. Hell, if #4 for WF could actually catch the ball WF would've scored on one of their early possessions. As a matter of fact, both #4 & #2 for WF had issues hanging onto well perfectly placed passes as they were in full stride deep down the field behind the secondary. But you said it, missing a few starters and the team played well, but let's be realistic, Oakton stinks.

No real surprises tonight. Picks were great, margins a little low. The region is pretty down this year, but wide open which makes for an exciting fall. I am also ready to announce my first area top 10.

Briar Woods (-28.0) @ Lee
-Briar Woods won 49-20, great start.

Chantilly @ Robinson (-14.0)
*Big spread for this one, but feel it might happen.
-Robinson won 41-17, disappointing night for the Chargers.

Hayfield (-34.0) @ McLean
*Hayfield won 48-0.

Herndon @ Tuscarora (-21.0)
*Tuscarora won 26-23, how the hell were they closer than Centreville? A tough game to explain.

Lake Braddock (-7.0) @ Centreville
*A little torn, I think Centreville will play well at home and Lake Braddock is overrated. That being said, I'll take the Bruins.
-Picked wrong, but not surprised at all. Lake Braddock was not that good after seeing them in person at the Robinson game which they dominated. I think this is the weakest I've seen the region in my 15 years following it. That being said, a region title makes for a great year and an entertaining playoff, I just don't expect anything at the state level. Centreville won 8-7.

Langley (-10.0) @ Fairfax
-Langley won 41-13.

Marshall @ Falls Church (-7.0)
*This is the conference championship game right here.
-Falls Church won 33-6, Jaguars will dominate the rest of the way in weak conference. Disappointing showing for Marshall who draws Madison next week.

Oakton @ Westfield (-14.0)
*Two teams going in opposite directions the last couple of weeks, but that being said I look for a bounce back for the Bulldogs.
-Westfield won 41-3, bounce back indeed!

Stuart (-7.0) @ Edison

Woodson @ West Potomac (-10.0)
West Potomac won 32-10.

Wakefield @ Mount Vernon (-20.0)

Washington-Lee @ South Lakes (-17.0)

West Springfield @ Stone Bridge (-16.0)

Yorktown @ Madison (-14.5)

South County (-14.0) @ TC Williams

Actually, Oakton did own the first quarter. Oakton drove the field on their first possession before fumbling the ball over to Westfield. Westfield 3 and out. Oakton then drove the field again before kicking a field goal after failing to punch it in from 1st and goal. I think they had possession about 10 minutes of the first 12.

After that Westfield found their running game and Oakton just very quickly faded away not to be heard from again.

Agree also - a very nice win by Centreville. Love it.

Of course VHSL in cahoots like usual with the cheaters from the Beach/757 area came up with great idea to hold 6a championship in Hampton area so home field advantage for Oscar Smith or whomever. Instead of one of our NR team fans traveling 90-120 min to Charlottesville will be almost 4 hours down there.

So it was OK for 757 teams to travel 3 or 3 1/2 hr's to Charlottesville vs HALF that time for Centreville or Westfield? Whiney, entitled NOVA kids already claiming 757 cheats. Put on your Big Boy Pants & Come Get Some!

FYI.... After the terrible DeMatha game, only 1 team has scored against SMITH. That's 3 out of 4 shut out games! AND Shawn Mitchell hasn't gotten in sync with their passing game yet!!!! SMITH is bigger in the trenches & has a better defense than last year! No one is running against them.

We'll be waiting for y'all in Hampton cause like you said, it'll be a home game!!

Yeah I admit 757 cannot win without rigging like Ocean Lakes a few years ago with all the fake transfers that got the coach ran out of the public school system or now with home game state championship games. Talking about pulling on the big boy pants, last two times Oscar Smith had to play Westfield or Centreville straight up they got their asses handed to them.

Excuses and living in the past. But if you think that going to 3 overtimes to beat a much smaller & much younger SMITH team is an ass whooping, then I'm OK if you wanna live in that! Settling in for ass whooping with pre-emptive excuses is alright too.

Yes Ocean Lakes under Chris Scott was caught cheating but SMITH just laid wood on them last year instead of rolling over & then complaining about it later. I think Chris Scott went over to private, Catholic school system because he really wasn't successful winning under VHSL rules. OL should have had several State Titles with all of their recruited talent. But their players were taught to be selfish & the better TEAMS beat them nearly every year!

SMITH is starting to play football the Bill Dee way. So, to get ready, just remember those 4 consecutive Pheobus State Titles & prepare your puckered sphincter for what's coming! BIG WOOD!!!!!

Don't pretend it's not an advantage (Google Mapped it):

Oscar Smith – Scott Stadium (178 miles):2 hours 50 minutes
Westfield – Scott Stadium (96 miles): 2 hours 1 minute

Oscar Smith – Armstrong Stadium (26 miles): 34 minutes
Westfield – Armstrong Stadium (180 miles): 3 hours 7 minutes

Coming from a neutral standpoint, why is Chantilly's Corey Thomas not getting them all 10x a game? He is their only consistent yardage and gets the ball 4-5 times a game. I could see him and Andrew park coming close in the all region/ all state ballot. Kids damn impressive considering chantilly down at the QB spot.

South Lakes hasn't played anyone with a winning record.

Marshall (2-3) (Marshall beat Edison and McLean)
Briar Woods (2-4) (BW beat Lee and Tuscarora)
Yorktown (2-3) (YT beat Wakefield and Fairfax)
McLean (0-5)
Washington-Lee (1-4) (WL beat Wakefield)

The only quality win one of their opponents have had is Tuscarora, and even they are 3-3. SL only beat Briar Woods by 7.

We'll find out who's legit when they play Madison in two weeks. Madison smoked them 38-6 last year.

Been watching Northern Virginia football for more than 20 years. I think this is the most balanced, but also weakest group I have seen. Seriously, four and five different teams can win the region. As weak as this year is, publics are still better in Virginia than Maryland and DC, no matter what the Washington Post says.

Damascus would go 5-5 in 5A or 6A distraction VA. They go undefeated every damn year in their shit conference.

Gap between private schools and publics is growing wider.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/recruiting-insider/wp/2016/10/05/the-virginia-high-school-football-playoff-outlook-through-week-5/

Although the spread between #1 and #6 is within ranking two points, the top 2 are from Liberty C6, the next 2 Patriot C7, then we get to the Concorde C5 schools like the lowly Westfield and Centerville.

As requested, here are the predictions and spreads for this week (first time doing this, wish me luck). Btw, I’m NOT Steve K.

Chantilly (-21) at McLean – Chantilly has been unacceptable this season but so has McLean. However, Chantilly is still the better team. I’ll take them.

Fairfax at Hayfield (-48) – Hawks offense keeps on rolling. South Lakes and Madison are the last two quality opponents left on their schedule.

James Madison (-42) at George Marshall – Game will be over before the 2nd quarter. Madison won’t have another tough opponent until they meet South Lakes and Hayfield at the end of the regular season.

Langley (-7) at Washington-Lee. Battle for the mid-tier spot in the Liberty District. I’ll take Langley.

Mount Vernon (-12) at Annandale. Very proud of Mount Vernon’s success this season. They’ll win this one.

Oakton at Centreville (-14) - Hard game to predict because Oakton’s been inconsistent. I’ll pick Cville to be on the safe side especially after beating Braddock last week.

South Lakes (-45) at Herndon – Rivalry game. Feel very sorry for Herndon fans.

Stone Bridge (-18) at Robinson – Robinson started off strong but are starting to fizzle out. Stone Bridge has a lot of momentum; they’ll win this one in an impressive fashion.

T.C. Williams at Lake Braddock (-21) - LB bounces back after a tough loss against Cville.

West Potomac (-25) at West Springfield – West Po rolls. WS was supposed to be one of the top teams in 6A North (looking at the preseason rankings and expectations), but have not lived up to any of those preseason expectations.

Westfield (-17) at Briar Woods – Could be a great game but after that dominating performance over their rival Oakton, I like Westfield in this one.

South County (-27) at W.T. Woodson – Woodson’s having a really good season but SoCo wins this one.

Yorktown at Broad Run (-17) – If this game happened a few years back, it would’ve been a very competitive game but Broad Run wins this game with relative ease.

Wakefield (-3) at Edison – Battle of disappointing teams. Wakefield had a really good season last year (and the year before last) and Edison used to be a football powerhouse in D5 years ago. My gut tells me Wakefield will win this game.

Lee at Falls Church (-21) – Might as well go ahead give FC the district title already.

Jefferson at Stuart (-42) – Even though Stuart is one of the worst teams in the region, they’ll crush TJ very easily.

Fairfax @ Hayfield (-35.0)
Might not be enough on this one. Hayfield covers that.

Jefferson @ Stuart (-35.0)
Seems about right. Stuart covers.

Chantilly (-17.0) @ McLean
Chantilly does not cover.

Langley (-6.0) @ Washington-Lee
Langley covers.

Lee @ Falls Church (-10.0)
*I know I said this last week, but this could potentially be the conference championship game now.
Falls Church wins but does not cover.

Madison (-37.0) @ Marshall
Madison covers

Mount Vernon (-21.0) @ Annandale
Mt. vernon Covers

Oakton @ Centreville (-14.0)
Centreville wins but does not cover.

South Lakes (-28.0) @ Herndon
Not enough. Herndon is a bad, bad football team.

Stone Bridge (-8.0) @ Robinson
*These teams are both a little hit or miss.
Stone Bridge wins and covers.

TC Williams @ Lake Braddock (-24.0)
That's about right. Braddock wins easily.

Woodson @ South County (-21.0)
Not enough on this one. SoCo wins by 30

Wakefield (-1.0) @ Edison
Wakefield. I guess.

West Potomac (-17.0) @ West Springfield
Springfield is banged up and these teams "Plain don't like each other" WestPo covers that spread easily.

Westfield (-14.0) @ Briar Woods
Westfield covers.

Yorktown @ Broad Run (-21.0)
Broad Run wins but does not cover.

McLean lost a heartbreaker...
Tied Chantilly 14-14 at halftime, McLean had all the momentum. Game was a dog fight.
Unfortunately in the 3rd quarter the McLean starting QB was badly injured. Seemed to break his leg or something on the play.
After that, McLean lost all of their momentum, and the players lost all their morale.
Final score 49-14 I believe.
I may be a Chantilly fan, but McLean had a lot of heart today. I'd pick them over Yorktown next week based on what I saw.
