Westfield gets a tough rap, but so does Soco and Braddock. All the good teams get the worst of it, just how it is. In my mind any talk is good talk, that means people fear you. Saw the Rams in a scrimmage this year, not impressed. They'll get better, but don't think they have the athletes on D to compete with some of the high powered offenses the region has to offer. They will lose in the final four again. A toss up between Braddock, Soco, and Westfield again this year.

Too much of a spread here. I saw Fairfax v. Herndon last week. Herndon came out on top, but it was mostly due to mistakes made by Fairfax on offense at inopportune times. Herndon doesn't have much depth. They'll beat Stuart, but not by 35.

As a West Springfield fan, we learned the hard way the Robinson doesn't show much in their scrimmages. From watching my sons film, it appeared that they only played their starters for about 1 quarter. If they aren't very good, we are in for a very long season at WSHS. I'll take Robinson by 30.

Tuscarora, Stone Bridge, Broad Run, Potomac Falls and Briar Woods will all win. You can't expect middle-of-the-pack (or worse) 6A teams to compete with the cream of the 5A crop. Only the top 6A teams (Lake Braddock, Robinson, Westfield, South County, Battlefield, Centreville) would be able to beat those 5. Madison beating SB last year was a fluke - I wouldn't expect that to happen again.

I think it probably because of the Spalding factor combined with Westfield's lack of size and speed in the defensive backfield. Plus some feel that Westfield is not as large and tough in the trenches as they were last year. I wouldn't be surprised if either team wins but I would be shocked if it is a blowout.

Speed is definetly not an issue but size sure is. But then again, does anybody have a size advantage against Spalding? But yeah definetly not as large cause the team is a lot younger this year. And yes is could go either way and definetly won't be a blowout on either side. Maximum 10 points difference. And both these teams know that this isn't the match up that matters.

Very funny. But the WF QB can be a hothead. Everyone was busy trashing SoCo #4 that had the penalties at the end of the game last year – but seem to forget that #17 had an unsportsmanlike conduct personal foul in the game himself. And another one last week against W-L. Now both were after close to late hits but nonetheless…

One of the biggest factors that people aren't discussing is the fact that Soco spent an entire off-season, and continue to currently, hear about the 40-8 loss in the state semi-final game. That is a huge game changer in the way they should of prepared for this moment all off-season.

I also don't think their student section will be that big for this game either. Nobody really seems to care about this matchup in the Westfield community as much as SOCO community cares about it. That could be the difference this game.

This is because we at Westfield are special, the teams around here are below us and we know that we are superior to everyone else. God Bless us, winning.

VHSL just cancelled the WHS vs SCO game, they said Westfield was going to win anyway, so there was no point in playing the game.

There is some talk that VHSL might cancel the entire season and just give the championship to Westfield given their stellar play, wonderful stature in the community, and all around good looks.

Of course nobody is unbeatable. Only 3 NR teams in the last 16 years were "unbeatable", Westfield '03 and '07, and Centre ville '13. Nobody other than the troll said that Westfield is unbeatable.

Delaney is not a FG kicker...He is a kick-off Specialist and a phenomenal punter...Who has the strongest leg in the Region therefore they use him to kick Field Goals...he's 1 for 6 Vs. Oscar Smith and South County..Could be Worse...

Well, I will eat my crow and admit I was flat out wrong. I took in the Stone Bridge - Madison game and I have to say Madison impressed the heck out of me.

Their offensive and defensive line play was superb - even though they were relatively undersized on both lines compared to SB - their lineman made up for that by being tougher and more athletic. SB was big but their lineman were slow and not as athletic as Madison. Madison held their own at times and dominated at times. SB had maybe one offensive drive where their line had the upper hand. Madison was just tougher and more physical throughout the game.

MAD defense stopped SB on a 3 and out first drive and then executed a dominating 7 minute drive down the field to go up 6-0. Xtr pt was missed.

SB eventually capitalized on a MAD defensive breakdown to score on a long pass play. 2pt convert made it 8-6.

SB opened the second half by recovering their onside kick and had all the momentum. But MAD stopped SB on 4th down and put together another impressive drive to go up 12-8. Didn't make 2pt attempt.

After a botched snap on a MAD FG attempt, SB ran their way into the end zone for a 15-12 lead.

MAD then drove the length of the field only to fumble it away in the red zone.

Then MAD forced a SB Bridge fumble but couldn't capitalize.

The MAD punt pinned SB inside their 5 and SB was subsequently forced to punt. MAD got the ball back at the 50 yard line down 15-12 with about 2:35 left in the game. First play was a well-executed hook-and-ladder play that went for 25 yards. MAD punched it in and the score went to 19-15.

MAD then forced SB out on downs - helped by a -15 sack by #5.

SB was plagued by poor kick coverage in this game while MAD suffered from untimely penalties and mishandled snaps/fumbles.

Suffice to say Hayfield and South Lakes are probably the only teams remaining on the MAD schedule that have a shot at beating them. It was a great win for Madison football and a great game.

Both teams have a lot of room for improvement offensively. The big news was that Spalding left the game in the third quarter after hurting his hand, it actually kind of worked out for them since they moved the starting QB to receiver and the backup QB threw two long touchdown passes to another kid, but they are going to need Spalding as the season goes on.

Joey Free, the senior corner shut Spaulding down, the sophomore didn't really do much other than a nice stop on a bubble screen. I can't believe SOCO threw so little, it was almost as if they were trying to pound the ball and use swing passes and forgot their passing game. I think the backup QB for SOCO is better than the starter.

Just watched the Westfield South County game - I think both teams are down as compared to last year. Cannot wait to get at both of them.

Went to the game, both Westfield and SOCO vastly overrated

Here we go once more. This all sounds so familiar. Déjà vu all over again.

I don't really think either of these teams are overyhyped, think both just looked like teams playing their second regular season opponent. The unfortunate thing for both was that they were playing a quality team so it looked a bit sloppy. The supposed Lake Braddock poster above should keep his mouth shut, either one of these teams are going beat the Bruins. The game didn't really come close to the hype that was built. It was a good close game but should not have been. Delaney makes those 3 missed FG's and it's not even close down the stretch. Westfield was missing two massive O-lineman so that will help because Jihnson's 1-11 performance behind center was embarrassing. He either got hurt or was just was rushing everything due to poor pass blocking from his line. Thought on one of his passes it could have been a completion if his 6'4 receiver would have dove for the ball, kids going D1 and he doesn't stretch out for a pass. Westfield also has a special RB who's a sophomore but has yet to play yet. If he performs as many think he can their offense will truly benefit, especially I'd Johnson can fix whatever his problem was last night. On defense Westfield is sound but not as much as last year. Their interior line is susceptible, good thing they've got good LB's. Jewell is a beast at D-end but for some reason they pulled Rivers from playing primarily D-end to OLB. He along with Jewell are the best players on that D-line, if they both are rushing the QB That would benefit the Bulldog secondary which is their weakness. Free is a very good player but that's it. The other CB is small, undersized, and not strong at all, both of their safeties are slow, although number 12 hits like a ton of bricks.

Lets make this a Westfield site as they are the only team to talk about, the only team worth talking about

We in the dixie cup committee will ratchet down next week's activities before the game since the team was a bit wobbly this week. Sorry fellow fans, we will modulate now that summer is over.

A lot of poppycock going on in this site. Anyway, I was at the SOCO/WESTF game last night too. And I must say - also was not overly impressed with either team. SOCO still not coached well enough to take advantage of their talent. And Westfield - some interesting pieces but meh not nearly dominant. Disagree with above poster that this was only second game. Time to show the region what you got. The other poster above cited two past Westfield teams and the recent Cville team that were juggernauts from start to finish - everyone knew it. These two teams are not nearly those. I think the NR is for the taking amongst those two teams of course but also LB, Robn, Battlefield, Cville, maybe even South Lakes and Hayfield. Going to be an interesting fall.

I think it's starting to become clear that Liberty is going to shake out as a big three/little five conference. One of Hayfield, Madison, or South Lakes will win the conference, and all three should make the playoffs. Liberty probably can get a 4th team in the playoffs (but probably no more than that), so it will be interesting to see who emerges from the Fairfax/Langley/McLean/W-L/Yorktown scrum at the bottom.

Y'all be sleeping on how good Lake Braddock and Robinson actually are this year. Game of the week coming up for the NR Championship - LB Vs. Robinson on Friday. Westfield and Soco just poseurs this year.

Yes they aren't as good as last year, but they aren't as bad as people said they were. They have the one good senior CB. I'm pretty sure the other DBs biggest problem is experience. They did a lot better against SOCO than I thought they would do. Teams that only have one dangerous receiver shouldn't really be threatening at all to the secondary. Like always Westfield should get better as the year goes, especially this year because biggest concern is inexperience (Johnson at QB, and multiple small defenders). Any idea when Asante will come back? How about the linemen?

Not until Herndon and Falls Church appear on the schedule. Relocation has destroyed that football program, and allowed for others to thrive. An example of this would be South Lakes who has became one of the area's top programs. Oakton probably would be suited off better in the Liberty Conference, but they'd still struggle there. Hard to believe that 10 years ago they were State Champs, just 4 years ago region champs, and now can't even compete with teams like T.C. Williams.

Thanks. Obviously the demographics are very different but I'm surprised that Oakton isn't doing better. They don't have to be a state championship contender year in and year out but I'd expect them to atleast put up a decent fight against the other Concorde district schools. Additionally, Westfield's numbers surprised me. Thought they had more Whites and Blacks and less Hispanics. When I went to school there 9 years ago we had a lot more white people, and a lot more people in general (3000ish). Anyone know what happen to their numbers?
