I think people are basically a mixed bag of good and evil. I think people are born with self interest and self preservation in mind. Making them somewhat greedy and selfish. but they are also born with the instinct to protect the pack (in mammals anyways), meaning they care for one another when they are injured/hurt/hungry, in the assumption the favor will be returned on them when the time comes.
