Well, I retract my agreement.

Went to the Centreville v. Oakton game last night. Downer just did not look that good - could not get the ball anywhere near his receivers (2-9 + an interception) and lost another fumble. Showed once again he's hard to tackle...

Centreville offense is looking better every game - they have a lot speed. Turner was unstoppable. Their defense was a disaster early - but they threw a shutout in the second half much to my surprise.

Westfield QB should be all district. Leads the district in every major category and undefeated season. Downer is a talent, no doubt, but his running is way ahead of his passing. He is not easy to stop when he has the ball in his hands. And, you cant go 0-4 against the teams not named Herndon.

The playoffs should prove interestring for the Concorde teams, I think this is a year where anything can happen. And AJ Turner at Cville is going to be an absolute terror the next couple of years.

After losing by 20, Robinson gets the same Chantilly Chargers at Chantilly in the first round of the playoffs.

I have not seen the final power points, but if I'm doing it right here are the matchups.

D6
(8) West Springfield @ (1) Westfield *easy Westfield win
(7) Oakton @ (2) Lake Braddock *this will be a fun game
(6) West Po @ (3) Centreville *West Po won in the regular season, but has been playing awful the second half of the season. While Centreville has been playing better week to week. I like Centreville pretty comfortably in this game.
(5) Robinson @ (4) Chantilly *Robinson will be a tough rematch for Chantilly. They lost to Westfield by 3, won squeekers against Oakton and Centreville, and beat Herndon 52-0. Take away the fumbles from last night and this will be a great competitive game.

I would say that Oakton lucked out in getting Lake Braddock. I think that will be closer than expected because the other Concorde district teams have Oakton's # this year. Good D-6 matchups all around with the exception of Westfield's game.

Is there a talent drop off in Springfield?
Lee went from a few years of making div. 5 playoffs to being utterly terrible.
West Springfield went from playing zero two way players and winning district championships to playing their entire team both ways and scratching their way to a first round massacre at the hands of westfield.

Are there no football players left or do the coaches only trust a certain number of kids?

Theres not much talent in Springfield. Theres no talent in Reston, Herndon or Falls Chuch for that matter! All of the talent rests in Chantilly and Vienna where the Youth Leagues dominate.

Re: High School Football

The talent is in chantilly not Vienna. Oakton sucks. Robinson and Braddock have a ton of talent, I don't know what their youth league is, but they have a huge advantage because they are both secondary schools. Nice when you can get those young kids involved early. Having them lift and learn the systems in 8th grade makes a huge difference. CYA is dominant though. If Chantilly HS would get rid of Lali they would be much much better. The talent that used to go to Oakton now goes to private school, so they don't have to go to their newly districted South Lakes, or they moved into Loudon County for bigger houses and new schools, which is why you see those areas getting better. The richer families that can afford o move to bigger houses and more land have improved that area and their football tremendously (not all from rich Oakton, just using that as an example). Ths should be a great playoff bracket this year. 5 Concorde teams!! Anything can happen but I am putting my money on Westfield(best coaching)or Centreville(best athletes).

Stone Bridge vs Edison

Hayfield vs Langley

Yorktown vs Jefferson

Madison vs South County

No I had it right the first time. Westfield has the bet staff in the area. Haddock is not a great coach, he is a system guy, his system works with the athletes he has now. He was a loser for years, lost at Chantilly and Fairfax. I believe he was 0-10 at Chantilly....and he was crushed year after year at Fairfax. The only good coach on that staff is Matthie (sp). They have more athletes at centreville, westfield just has more players. The westfield staff is loaded with great coaches, Simmons, Shields, Everret, Bendorf, the list goes on and on.

Haddock turned Fairfax around from a constant loser to a respectable team. He then made Centreville football relevant again. Haddock is a great coach and the best in the region, system or no system.

As for Westfield they've won forever, first with Verbanic and now with Simmons. Don't get me wrong that success does not from lack of coaching, I know their staff does a fantastic job. I just think Haddock is better and Westfield has a much stronger team this year. All that matters though is 1 region championship for Haddock and staff, 0 for Simmons and staff. Centreville and Westfield are both set up to be the region's elite the next two seasons.

Anyway here is the spread for this week's playoff games.

No. 8 West Springfield at No. 1 Westfield (-20.5)
No. 7 Oakton at No. 2 Lake Braddock (-8.0)
No. 6 West Potomac at No. 3 Centreville (-14.0)
No. 5 Robinson at No. 4 Chantilly (-6.5)

No. 8 Edison at No. 1 Stone Bridge (-40.0)
No. 7 Jefferson at No. 2 Yorktown (-35.0)
No. 6 South County (-14.0) at No. 3 Madison
No. 5 Langley (-3.0) at No. 4 Hayfield

Good running back and one big play receiver. Defense is average, offensive line and qb are average at best.

Chantilly had no trouble with them whatsoever when they were 4-0. Having saw that game, I have to figure Westfield will smoke them. They kind of limped to the finish line.

For the record Haddock "turned" fairfax around after they dropped from the Concorde where the teams were all Div 6 and badass to the Liberty where well, it's stonebridge (who they never hung with) and noboby else. So don't go all rewriting his heroics.

I will give him the nod in that since he left Fairfax has sunken into being one of the worst Div. 6 teams in the state. They have the best RB on the east coast and you almost forget they do.

The program is running downhill faster then their offense tries to.

Simmonds needs to go, half of the team is talking about either transfering or just not playing. He is the worst play caller in the state. sweep right , sweep left, trap and rollout pass on 3rd and long and you can set your watch by it.

Cville dominated Oakton and is playing some of their best football at the right time. Westfield is the favorite, but not by much. Their Defense is suspect and can be scored on. Cville turned the ball over 4 times against them (2 interceptions and 2 fumbles) BUT moved the ball up and down the field. Chantilly or Robinson against Westfield will be a great game. Neither team is intimidated by them and know they can beat them.

Cville will have to beat LB to get to the final. They already did it and will have alot of confidence going into the game. Go to love Playoff football.

Actually, Fairfax is an interesting case "study" - is it coaching, players, or some combination? Recall they were good in the 90s under Verbanic (3 undefeated seasons, IIRC), then dropped like a rock... and the current coach seems to be of dubious skill.

Pierson-El had an unbelievable game. WaPost says he had 239 yds on only 13 carries and 2 Tds. It was the game where everyone thought he was the best in the NR, until Joe Wilson showed he was better. Cville played horrible and WestPo played terrific. Cville won't let it happen again. You ever heard of the Robinson Rollercoaster? This year it's the WestPo Rollercoaster. Went up a large hill, then came back to earth faster than they went up.

Really, thats odd. Wil they give Richardson, Wandey, Wilson, Turner and SImms all the nod at RB. You would hope they would be able pick one clear cut selection.

Downer is a talent but you cannot lose all 4 critical conference games and get the nod. And you have to be able to throw the ball.

That's a joke. I do not know how Romine got selected, probably because he was a 3 year varsity starter (2 at qb); but I thought it was very clear cut that Mullins should have been the outright winner. I would have put Downer ahead of Romine too, but he was too inconsistent to garner the award.

Then if they did select all those running backs (haven't seen the official one) that's a joke too. I understand Richardson, Wilson, and Turner but really Simms and Wandey too, neither was anything special. In a 6 team district you can't just select one player from each team. Ashame the coaches can't get a simple selction right. I've been saying for years let the media make the selections.

I was joking about the RB's to make a point, alot of good ones but you have to select the 2 best. Don't know who got it, but my votes would be for Wilson and Richardson. No slight to the others, but Wilson is clear cut and Richardson was huge for Westfield this year.

Mullins had most yards, most TD's, highest rating in Concorde. He was consistent all year...I would say he gets the nod.

If by "early season form" you really mean "play 4 crappy teams in a row"
LB 31-24

Chantilly 35, Robinson 31. Don't expect Wilson to fumble the ball twice again. Chantilly will lose - just a matter of time.

C'Ville 31-28. Pierson-El keeps it close but C'ville is a better team.

SB 49-21. They will score at will.
Edison will never be the team it was under Lewis

Can't argue with this one although I think the point spread may be even more.

This isn't last year's SoCo. Madison 28-24

Hayfield 21, Langley 17

I concur. Home team gets the edge

Here are the All-District Selections.

Concorde
QB: 3-way tie Romine (Chantilly), Downer (Oakton), Mullins (Westfield); this is a joke but my opinion is above.
RB: Turner (Centreville), Wilson (Robinson), Richardson (Westfield); hands down Wilson’s award.
WR: Tutt (Centreville), Harris (Chantilly), Eller (Westfield), Burns (Westfield)
TE: Huelskamp (Chantilly)
Offensive Player of the Year: Wilson (Robinson)
Defensive Player of the Year: Huelskamp (Chantilly); very debatable, but you can’t put much stock in these awards. A great honor though.

2nd team is irrelevant in a 6 team district with this many first-teamers.

Liberty
QB: Burns (Stone Bridge)
RB: Scott (Fairfax), Mun (Langley), O’Connor (Jefferson)
WR: Novaki (Langley), House (Madison), Parker (South Lakes), Yarborough (Stone Bridge), Higgins (Stone Bridge)
TE: Schwab (Madison)
Offensive Player of the Year: Mun (Langley)
Defensive Player of the Year: Allen (Stone Bridge) *unanimous vote

Patriot
QB: Henderson (Lake Braddock)
RB: Jolley (Lee), Pierson-El (West Potomac), Levaughn (South County)
WR: Alexander (Lake Braddock), Hollins (Lake Braddock), Aaron (South County), Moss (TC Williams)
TE: Bermingham (Annandale), Antonellis (Lake Braddock)
Offensive Player of the Year: Pierson-El (West Potomac)
Defensive Player of the Year: Oren (South County)

I gotta go w/My Thoughts' picks of C'Ville over WestPo and Madison over SoCo. One good back isn't enough to beat C'Ville when the rest of the team hasn't been playing very well. Soco lost a lot of players from the team I saw play well vs. Phoebus last year @ UVA. Giving up 49 to WestPo and 36 to Hayfield is the concern, even though those were early games. Agree w/Gridiron1 that SoCo is on a roll now but they're playing a tougher team this week. Wanted to go see Phoebus play Heritage tomorrow (rematch of a 28-27 early game) but am going to go to a local game instead, most likely SB-Edison, Langley-Hayfield, or Chantilly-Robinson. Got any thoughts on those?

Saw Chantilly-Robinson last week and was a little disappointed the game wasn't closer. Wilson fumbled twice in the second quarter which directly led to 14 Chantilly points. Once Chantilly was up two scores, Robinson couldn't come back. I imagine the rematch will be a lot closer as I don't anticipate Wilson giving up two more TOs. This week's game could end up being one of those where the team with the ball last wins. I would give the edge to Chantilly playing at home with a better passing game.

Winners tonight:

D6
Westfield - no brainer
Centreville - Shut WP RB down
Chantilly - Won huge of Robinson
Oakton - Defense wins and get nice upset

D5
Stone Bridge - not even a game, but yet Edison coach does a good job
Yorktown - good season for TJ, Yorktown looks good
South County - nice comeback win
Langley - Nice pull for Langley, Hayfield mishandles ball in crucial areas

Here are the specifics.

Division 6
(8) West Springfield 7 @ (1) Westfield 49
(7) Oakton 20 @ (2) Lake Braddock 13
(6) West Potomac 11 @ (3) Centreville 28
(5) Robinson 21 @ (4) Chantilly 56

Next Week's Semi's
(4) Chantilly @ (1) Westfield
(7) Oakton @ (3) Centreville

Major props to the Concorde for dominating region play this year. Lake Braddock went 0-3 against the Concorde and unbeaten against everyone else. A real testament to what a district this is. The Northern Region Tournament has now become the Concorde District Tournament.

Division 5
(8) Edison 7 @ (1) Stone Bridge 69
(7) Jefferson 7 @ (2) Yorktown 37
(6) South County 19 @ (3) Madison 14
(5) Langley 21 @ (4) Hayfield 14

Next Week's Semi's
(5) Langley @ (1) Stone Bridge
(6) South County @ (2) Yorktown

Saw the Robinson game and it was deja vu from last week. If it's any consolation for Robinson, they only graduate 12 guys and they are bringing back a ton of talent next year. They could be poised to look like the Rams of old next year.

just curious because I have seen this in other sports in the region, doesn't the #1 or the highest seed play the lowest seed no matter what? So wouldn't Oakton be playing Westfield for example. I could be wrong here.

I don't know about all sports in the region, but football and basketball follow a bracket format and not a reordering of seeds.

So those matchups up above are correct.

The Chantilly @ Westfield game is going to be awesome. Both teams are playing great football right now and if it's anything like the regular season matchup it will be extremely intense.

I give the edge to Westfield, but it is interesting to note while Chantilly is 1-10 against Westfield in the regular season, they are 2-0 against Westfield in the playoffs with both wins coming as the underdog at Westfield. Westfield is a better team and more consistent, but if the good Chantilly shows up which I imagine it definitely will with the stakes this high, this will be something to see.

I'd give the edge to Chantilly based on the past:

http://virginiapreps.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=2534&mid=159665659&sid=914&tid=159662859&style=1

Quoting:
It is interesting that Westfield has never beaten any of the 3 remaining teams in the NR playoffs. They are 0-3 against Oakton (2002, 2004, 2005), 0-3 against Chantilly (2006, 2008, 2010) and 0-1 against Centreville (2011). (South County got them in 2009).

Their Northern Region Tournament playoff wins have come against Herndon (2003, 2008), Robinson (2003, 2005, 2011), Annandale (2006), South County (2007), West Potomac (2007, 2011) and West Springfield (2007, 2012).

This despite regular season records of 11-1 vs. Centreville, 11-1, vs. Chantilly and 9-3 vs. Oakton.

I'd say this does not bode well for Westfield.

Guys, the past has nothing to do with this. The game will be won or lost on the field of play. I expect this to be a very, very good HS football game between two good teams.

Congrats to the Concorde District for playing so well this season. And though a Bulldog fan, props to Oakton for taking down the #2 seed, the much hyped Lake Braddock Bruins.

At the Westfield game last night, my observation was, how did W. Springfield get into the playoffs? The looked completely overmatched. Did they beat any quality teams this year?

West Springfield did beat Robinson.

Robinson is so up and down though, they beat Oakton and Centreville, and lost to Westfield by 3. They also gave a Stone Bridge a decent game, but the last two weeks lost by 20 and 35 to Chantilly.

Well thats a solid win if they beat Robinson.

Robinson tough to figure out this year. One thing for sure, Wilson is a superstar but they need to find some balance on their offense.

That is very interesting, isn't it? I'm not saying it has a bearing this year, but those numbers are real eye opening. The 2010 Chantilly playoff win also totally slipped my mind.

Robinson has been playing the past two games without their starting linebackers due to discipline problems. The thing that would scare me about Chantilly is the fact the Joe Wilson rushed for 200+ yds on 30 carries. You cant give that much yardage up against Westfield on the ground and expect to win that game. That being said, I do think this is the best matchup of the week. It should be an excellent game. I predict a similar outcome to the first game.

I thought Oakton's defense looked very good against Braddock.
There were a lot of big hits in this game from Oakton.

They pressured Henderson all night and looked good in coverage.
Henderson neverlooked comfortable, Braddock didnt have much of a running game and the offense was held to about 200 yards total. The receiver 24 for Braddock is very good, has size speed and strength.

Downwer was the best player on the field last night, accounting for all 3 of Oaktons scores.

Oakton vs Centreville will be a much better game then people think.

Yeah, it might be a bit misleading - 4 of those 7 losses came to teams that made it to the state finals. And 2 of those losses came in down years for Westfield.

Wilson ran for 243 yards and 3 TD's on Westfield. He's a beast. Nothing wrong with Chantilly's defense last night. He broke 2 big ones, but most of the runs were small and contained which you will have to live with against him.

CaleB H is a good player. His arm is legit. Saw the LB-Oakton game last night. Oakton's D played out of its mind. If that same D showed up in its earlier Concorde games, some of the results may have been different.

Henderson threw the ball at least 40 times. He was constantly harassed and under pressure, but he throws the ball on a rope.

No. 24 (Alexander) for LB was a stud. 6 3 wide receiver who is only a soph. He and Henderson will be tough to beat next year, so long as they get a running game. Their running game did nothing last night.

First of all, to the guy above me, this is high school football, not college football. Wrong forum. Second, everyone needs to remember: all 3 losses by lake braddock were against the concorde district. As much as oakton's defense looked dominating, both centreville and westfield's defenses looked good too. AJ Turner intercepted a Henderson pass late and returned it long to set up the game winning touchdown for cville, and wfield's defense looked very good.

My point is, both centreville and oakton both looked very good against lake braddock. I see no reason to expect anything different than what happened last time.

This year Stone Bridge would have been the strongest Concorde team, and I don't think Westfield would even give them that tight a game.

Most years though any of the strong teams in the Concorde could take Stone Bridge on a given night. They would be your typical Concorde team.

Stone Bridge has won something like 100 games in the last 9 years. This year's team is on par with or better than the teams from the mid 2000s

As a LB parent (a mom, so no technical football terms being used here) who was at the game, I have to say LB didn't look very good and they definately were not playing the same game they have been. The choice to go for the 2 point pass was not a good one. The entire section chanted "dont do it" over and over.

If LB had their act together and played football they should have beaten Oakton without a problem. This was an embarrassing game for the team to have played and to end the season with.

You think Oakton's gameplan might have had something to do with Braddock "not playing the same game they have been"? Give credit where credit is due. Braddock did not lose that game; Oakton won it.
