State Championships

The final week once again is upon us! I’m going to pick all 6 classes like I did last year since we only have 6 games left. Congratulations to all 12 teams who have made it this far and are playing for hardware! I’d also like to thank all of you guys who contributed to the forum this year. Yes, the post numbers were down, BUT we still did over 50,000 views! Thank you all for your kind words, and to the user who asked, I plan on starting the 2024 thread next weekend and I will share the link for everyone to share and save (with all of the spam on this site and what not). So tell a friend to tell a friend and maybe we can do even better numbers next year! Class 1 & 2 will be played at Salem HS, Class 3 & 4 will be played at Liberty University and Class 5 & 6 are finally back at UVA. The VHSL should’ve never moved the Class 5 and 6 finals down to the 757, just my opinion. Now onto the games:
Class 1: Essex (-14) v. Galax
- Two smaller schools, neither of whom I am familiar with. Riverheads is now Class 2 and they ran Class 1 for years. Essex comes in undefeated while Galax comes in at 10-4, and with that being said, give me Essex.
Class 2: Riverheads (-6) v. Radford
- Riverheads won seven (yes, SEVEN!) Class 1 titles in a row and I guess the VHSL said enough of this and bumped them up a class. Riverheads lost 1 game, in week 1, by 1 point. Radford is undefeated but that isn’t enough to sway me. I like Riverheads to win their eighth State Championship in a row, their first in Class 2. This very well could be the best game next weekend.
Class 3: Lafayette v. Liberty Christian (-14)
- If there’s one school that is glad Phoebus is no longer a Class 3 school, its LCA. They come in undefeated and are basically playing in their own backyard. I don’t know how the VHSL lets a private school compete in public school football, but they do. LCA is also totally loaded with talent, I like them in this one, it could possibly get ugly.
Class 4: Salem v. Phoebus (-35)
- Hats off to Salem for getting this far, but Phoebus is just too much. Phoebus won their first playoff game 104-0 and also have 8 shutouts on defense and have hung 104, 77 and 65 points on opponents. Phoebus wins big.
Class 5: Stone Bridge v. Maury (-22)
- Remember the schedule Stone Bridge started off with and the talent they faced? Maury is just as good as all of those teams. Maury has 7 shutouts and have 83-0, 85-0, 81-0, 62-0, 63-0 and 68-8 wins on their resume. Stone Bridge has their hands full in this one, I like Maury big.
Class 6: Highland Springs v. Freedom-Woodbridge (-24)
- The VHSL got what they wanted in the Class 6 final. Freedom is just too much for really any team. Remember when I said I had the Class 4, 5 and 6 winners already decided last week? It's Phoebus, Maury and Freedom. I think Maury and Phoebus would play Freedom tougher than Highland Springs, but the Springers do have the athletes, size and strength to hang around with Freedom. Freedom is just so explosive on offense, I can’t see the Springers matching them. Freedom’s defense doesn’t get the praise it deserves because of the powerful offense but they lock teams down. I like Freedom big.
