So what do you suggest? Should we cancel the playoffs? Should the other 31 teams forfeit now and end the season? Are you arguing that if a team can't beat Freedom there is no point in trying to win a playoff game? Or what is your point?

If true, no. He barely played against Westfield and they won. May be a very small factor down the road against stronger teams, but even then it's only one role player. If true, they will be fine against Yorktown. Every team has players out at this point.

My point is Freedom is levels above any other team in the area, that’s my point.

I was at the game. He went down early and neve returned. I do not know what injury he has, but trainers from both teams and a team doctor were on the field. For what it is worth, SL could not run the ball all that well against Westfield and beat them with passing-so. yes, it might make a difference.

He should’ve retired 4 years ago after they made the region championship game. The players openly mock him and he can barely express himself. 10 years ago he was the “old veteran coach” now he’s just retarded.

Do you know this for a fact?
Why would you even put that out there? You must’ve been sitting on the Westfield sidelines. If a player got hurt that’s a MINOR, it doesn’t belong on this thread.
And if you were honestly asking if one player makes a difference…no. It’s a TEAM SPORT. Look up the Fairfax Times arrive from last Friday.

Relax, do t get your panties all twisted. The SL kid is not the first nor last time an injury is brought up and yes at this stage of football, losing a “star” player makes a huge impact. This is why players parents should stay the eff of the FFU! Thin skinned won’t get you far in life. It’s not like anyone was even bashing the kid unlike many other players from just this seAson alone.

Yorktown beats south lakes 7-6 and was the better team throughout. It could have been worse if not for stalling in the red zone and missed field goals. South lakes was running it almost at will but got off schedule because of penalties and it eventually bit them at the end. As someone who’s been very critical of hanson I still stand by it, but am happy to see what may have been his last masterpiece.

Tough night for South Lakes...down RB1 and RB2 prior to kickoff required some positionchanges. Early jitters on the first few series with some overthrows and drops. Both teams had 2 missed FG tries in the first half and a bad exchange on the SL extra point made the difference. Key drives on both sides stalled by penalties. Yorktown was finally able to get it in the endzone with about 20 seconds left..potential flag was picked on the play so not sure what the call "would" have been. Maybe they were looking ahead to a rematch with Westfield, but they did keep Yorktown off the board until the very end...offense was out of sync all night. Credit to Yorktown for getting the job done.

Coaching. That South Lakes loss has to be one of the most stunning coaching screw-ups in nova history. I've seen South Lakes and Yorktown both play in person this season and there is no comparison between the talent level of those two teams. Call Mr. Hanson senile if you want but someone knew what they were doing in the playoffs and someone didn't. Please toss South Lakes back out of the Concorde - they are an embarrassment.

Yes.....this is arguably the most stunning playoff result in the history of NoVa football. South Lakes averaged 43 points per game this season and should have easily beaten Yorktown by 28 points.

That West Potomac team was arguably the best 8 seed I’ve seen. There is no reason other than coaching for their season to be as disappointing as it was. The stallions are going to have to really tie things down if they want to beat us again for the region championship.

Region Quarterfinal Results
Posted by: parentof2 ()
Date: November 12, 2023 10:56AM

Let me start by saying this was one of the most wild first round weekends that I can remember. Tons of shocking results.

1. Fairfax (-3) @ Edison
- Fairfax won and covered, 32-20. Edison (my sleeper team) finishes 7-4 and has nothing to hang their heads about. Patriot teams are just too strong for National teams.

2. Hayfield @ West Springfield (-21)
- West Springfield won and covered just barely, 41-19. Hayfield finishes 6-5 and returns just about everyone next year except their RB. Again, nothing for Hayfield to hang their heads about. It's just the Patriot vs. National difference in power again.

3. Herndon (-3) @ McLean
- Herndon gets it done for the second time this year against McLean. This time around they won 28-21 on the road which was a wider margin than the 3 point win they had at home for their Homecoming game. I wonder what happened to McLean down the stretch as it seems they really fell off.

4. Langley @ Madison (-16)
- Langley wins big, 42-6. Looks like the 6D playoffs will go through Madison now.

5. Mount Vernon @ Lake Braddock (-24)
- Lake Braddock won and covered, 49-16. I really like the Bruins running attack. Shoutout to Mount Vernon though, who started the season 0-4 and could've easily checked out but they rallied to get to 5-5, make the playoffs and they were co-district champs. Nothing to be ashamed about. Again, Patriot vs. National.

6. Potomac @ Freedom-Woodbridge (-45)
- Freedom won the first time these two got together, 65-0. They upped themselves and won Friday night 75-7. Just another day at the office for Overton and his guys.

7. West Potomac @ South County (-21)
- South County won 22-18, and quite frankly, they are lucky they won. As another user noted, the Wolverines had the ball at the Stallions goal line with a chance to win with under a minute left and turned the ball over on downs. All I will say is South County better wake up because both Lake Braddock and West Springfield are playing better football than them right now.

8. Westfield (-3) @ Washington-Lee
- Westfield won comfortably, 30-7. 9-2 finish for the Generals which is fantastic, hats off to them. They just couldn't compete with a Concorde team with a very good coaching staff. Westfield had them figured out from the start.

9. Yorktown @ South Lakes (-18)
- Down goes the #1 seed! Yorktown won 7-6, and I don't even know what to say. South Lakes completely blew this one. Being down a couple of players on a 10-0 team should not have resulted in a loss to a 8 seed, but it did. Hats off to Hanson and his team for going on the road and pulling off one of the biggest upsets in recent memory.

Region Semifinals
Posted by: parentof2 ()
Date: November 12, 2023 10:57AM

Semifinals week! Can you imagine if both #1 seeds lost? South Lakes did and South County should’ve, that would’ve made for some crazy storylines. Region 6C is now exclusively Patriot District teams and 6D is Concorde and a sprinkle of Liberty. As I have said, the playoffs are watered down and VHSL has to fix this problem, I think a lot of others would agree. But, playoff football is still playoff football and I love it! Let’s get into this week’s slate:

1. Colonial Forge @ Freedom-Woodbridge (-28)
- Forge is no slouch, coming in at 10-1, with their only loss coming to Mountain View, 31-13. Forge has played a few of the same opponents as Freedom, with Freedom winning by significantly wider margins. Maybe Forge can hang for a quarter or a half, but Freedom has anywhere between 6 to 8 legit D1 players on the field at any time and that’s a tough task for any team. It’s Freedom’s world until it isn’t anymore. Eagles big at home.

2. Fairfax @ South County (-17)
- The Stallions won the first time these two got together and they won big, 50-7. However, the Stallions have been scaring me with their play as of late and if it wasn’t for that, the spread would be higher. The Stallions are the more talented team but anything can happen in the playoffs (as we saw last week) so they better come prepared.

3. Herndon @ Madison (-13)
- Co game of the week. I can’t recall the last time Herndon made it this far in the playoffs so I commend them for that. Unfortunately for them, they are going on the road to a hostile environment against a team that is better than them from coaching on down to the playoffs. I have a hunch Herndon keeps it close for a half before Counts wakes Madison up and they put it on Herndon in the 2nd half.

4. Massaponax @ Stone Bridge (-30)
- The Bulldogs, fresh off a bye welcome a 6-5 Massaponax team to town. Aside from Ponax keeping it close with Forge, nothing about them stands out to me. I like the Bulldogs big at home as Massaponax takes the long bus ride back to Spotsylvania.

5. West Springfield @ Lake Braddock (-3)
- Game of the week and another Patriot District rematch. The Bruins won a thriller by 4 points last month. Both of these teams are very good. They both have solid lines on both sides, can run the ball and throw it and they both pursue the ball well on defense. I can see this game going either way but I’m giving the slight edge to the Bruins as they are at home and won the first time they played. This game could really come down to a late mistake. As of right now, I like the winner of this game to beat the winner of Fairfax vs. South County. Can’t wait for this game! (NFHS, please don’t be down Friday night.)

6. Yorktown @ Westfield (-17)
- The 6 seed hosting the 8 seed in the semi finals, who would’ve guessed? I know Westfield is happy to be hosting a playoff game. Yorktown did the unthinkable last week, but I don’t think they will be able to do it twice. Really good coaching match up here with Hanson against Simmons. Westfield has the better players and I think Yorktown will still be high off the South Lakes win. I like the Bulldogs big at home, but again, it’s the playoffs so you never know! I will definitely be keeping an eye on this one as well.

Minor point, but SL was not the #1 seed despite their win over Madison. Their schedule was much weaker than Madison's. Weak schedule is also why Westfield was a #6 when they are easily the third best team in the region (and came within 10 points of being the #1 and 10-0).

> Westfield had them figured out from the start.

You forgot one key point - that W-L has no defense. Westfield did just about anything the wanted on offense. I can see how W-L did well in their district and with their schedule, which did not have a real quality team on it.

Seeing a lot of comments about West Potomac so looked at their schedule and noticed something happened midseason. During their first 5 games they beat Mount Vernon by 3, beat Centreville by 3, smacked by Lake Braddock, lost by 4 to Robo (wow) and then lost to Fairfax by 28. *Something changed here* Next 5 games: Beat Oakton by 29, lost to WS by 9, beat AC by 20, beat Woodson by 27 and then lost to SoCo by 15 to end the regular season. They were definitely playing better ball during the 2nd half of the season and would be good to know from any West Po insiders on what changed halfway thru the season.

West Po has a young team and had several starters injured and suspended from about week 3 to week 5/6. Once those players returned and the inexperienced players improved we became a much better team.

While the LB-WS matchup is likely to be the most explosive and fun to watch, I think the next most interesting game is Yorktown @ Westfield.
The South Lakes upset was absolutely huge…I think the SL coach and players were just too cocky. But I still wouldn’t count Yorktown out when you look at their last two games against WF: an OT loss last year and a 13-7 loss the year before when Yorktown reached the red zone multiple times but apparently didn’t have their kicker dressed. I still like Madison in Region D and if they can push through I foresee them facing off against a surgeon LB team.

Yes. South Lakes seemed to be really caught up in the hoopla and even made in-studio media appearances in the week of the first round playoff game. The results announce a really poor week of practice and inadequate planning.

Yorktown is a bit of an enigma. I'm the idiot who watched them play Centreville and was not impressed. But looking at their schedule all 4 losses were by 7 points or fewer. They seem to be the type of team that plays to the level of their competition - good or bad. They are definitely hot right now with two nice wins a row and excellent defensive performances. I wouldn't read too much into the past two seasons - Westfield was an average football team at best - Yorktown couldn't have picked a better two-year cycle to play Westfield. Westfield is a significantly better squad this season.

I think you are partly right - Madison wins Region D and Lake Braddock Region C... but they won't be playing each other in the state semis.

I’ve noticed the last 6-7 years CalPreps/MaxPreps ratings have been biased against Class 6 teams from Region C and D. The rankings frequently are comical and don’t make any sense.

E.g. let’s look at Madison vs Colonial Forge.

Madison is 10-1 and has wins against #1616, #1820, #1876 and #1967. Opponents record = 62-52
Colonial Forge is 10-1 and has a win against #1833. Opponents record = 53-62.

Yet, Colonial Forge has a higher strength of schedule and is ranked higher.

On top of such nonsense, we all know based on history and the eye-ball test, Madison is a better football team and would win that game a majority of the time.

CalPreps needs to fix their algorithms.

Not a toss up, really. I don't know the Yorktown offense but very few teams have been able to run on the Westfield defense and none have really torched them on the ground. If Yorktown has a very good passing game they have an outside, small chance of the upset. Unless Westfield has a bunch of turnovers they are probably going to score at least 3-4 times and I don't put that much stock into the Yorktown defense despite the several recent low scoring games they participated in.

While I certainly hope Yorktown wins, I don’t think they will. It’ll probably be a similar score like the Westfield W-L game. My question is, does Bruce Hanson retire after this year?

South County getting completely smacked by Fairfax. All of their demons that went unaddressed during the season are coming to a head. Special teams is a disaster. They came out with a trick play punt from inside their own 20. They continue to be undisciplined getting silly false starts, offsides and personal fouls in key moment. The offense has no identity. This team has too much talent to look like this.

Yorktown was an extremely tough out. Westfield drove the ball pretty successfully in the first half - mixing up their usual short passes and running the ball. Both teams had 2 turnovers - Westfield 2 interceptions, Yorktown 2 fumbles. Westfield had leads of 14-0, 14-7 and then 21-7 at the half. Yorktown had an extremely impressive drive to open the second half making it the final score of 21-14. Both teams had some trouble keeping out of their own way with many penalties. At the end of the day, what stands out in my mind is the Westfield defense keeping Yorktown from scoring on two trips inside the 5 yard line in the fourth quarter. Yorktown played a damn good game for 7-5 team. Still trying to decide if South Lakes and Westfield just suck, or if Yorktown is really that good.

Then you must be one of the very few. I guarantee this guy is gone. You can’t have five years and produce that type of product on the field. You have to able to lead a program. You have to have the right assistants under you and let those coaches do what they do. You can’t be a defensive mind coach and call offensive plays when you don’t have any experience as an offensive coordinator in your career. When you hire little league coaches on your staff, look at the results. Kids are transferring out of there for a reason. Really feel bad for the kids & community. Make a change now!

Another week of some really interesting playoff football, you gotta love it! I also want to shoutout the schools that actually take the time to update the time, quarter and the score on NFHS Network in live time. Lake Braddock and Madison do a good job at that and myself and I'm sure everyone else is very grateful. I saw South County was down big and I wanted to see for myself and the score at the bottom said Away 0, Home 0. 0:00 1st quarter, even though it was the 3rd. C'mon now, it can't be that hard to update the score! That's my only complaint and yes, it is petty, I know! I'm glad NFHS Network was also working at every game this weekend though.

1. Colonial Forge @ Freedom-Woodbridge (-28)
- The Freedom train continues to roll, this time 52-16. The game was actually very close for the first half and then Freedom wore them down. Keep in mind, Forge was 10-1 coming into this game. Heck of a season for those guys.

2. Fairfax @ South County (-17)
- This one absolutely shocked me, just like South Lakes losing last week. This one, however, was more shocking. The Stallions fall at home 30-6. This is a team they easily handled earlier in the season 50-7. The only thing that I can think of is that the rumors on here about South County losing their QB due to injury was true. I don't see how they lost that bad at home. Stunning. Congratulations to Fairfax, who will be in the Region Championship for the 2nd straight season. How many of you guys had Fairfax advancing this far in your bracket?

3. Herndon @ Madison (-13)
- Madison won 37-7, but the game was 8-0 at halftime. Another example of a better team wearing their opponent down in the 2nd half. Madison (as I'm sure they are used to) will be playing after Thanksgiving yet again. As for Herndon, this is the furthest they made it in the playoffs since 1985. They finished 8-4 and made it to the semi finals, losing to a very good Madison team is nothing to hang your head over. Great season Herndon! They have come a long way in a short time.

4. Massaponax @ Stone Bridge (-30)
- Stone Bridge won 35-14, failing to cover. Massaponax gave them everything that they had, unfortunately, it wasn't enough. The Bulldogs advance to the 5D Championship, playing after Thanksgiving is the norm for the Stone Bridge program.

5. West Springfield @ Lake Braddock (-3)
- Lake Braddock walks away victorious, 38-21. I watched the first half of this game and it was very entertaining. The Spartans scored with ease on the opening drive of the game and it had me wondering if they could play that strong for all 48 minutes. The game was competitive for the first half (which is all I watched). The Bruins were up 17-14 at the half and I guess Lake Braddock put their foots on the Spartans necks in the 2nd half. I will say from what I watched, both teams displayed potent offenses with both being able to pass and run effectively. The Spartans did have some key penalties which killed momentum, in my opinion. I did not watch the 2nd half as I switched to the Westfield game but hats off to both teams for a fun first half. I wonder how much talent the Spartans lose to graduation but if it isn't much, watch out for them next year.

6. Yorktown @ Westfield (-17)
- Westfield comes away with the win 21-14, stopping Yorktown on 4th and 2 from the Westfield 2 as time ran out to get the goal line stand and the win. I turned this game on in the 2nd half when I saw how close the score was. This was also a fun game. Westfield sacked the Yorktown QB in the 4th and ran it back which would have made it 28-14, but it was called back due to penalty. The clock ran almost nonstop for the 2nd half with Westfield almost exclusively calling running plays. I was very impressed with the Yorktown offense, who had to go 80 yards in 4 minutes down a score with their season on the line. They played very composed and their QB made a few really impressive throws on the final drive to get the Patriots to the Bulldogs goal line, but at the end, it wasn't enough. Hats off to both teams for another really good game. I think Yorktown might be better than their record showed and Westfield is back to playing after Thanksgiving.

Region Championships
Posted by: parentof2 ()
Date: November 19, 2023 12:10PM

The Region Championship week is upon us! As always, all games are going to be played Saturday afternoon. In 6C we have a Patriot District rematch, in 6D we have a Concorde District rematch, and in 5D we have a Potomac District rematch. Not a fan of the watered down playoffs as you all know by now, but nonetheless, I’m still excited to see how Saturday plays out.

1. Battlefield @ Freedom (-10)
- Game of the week for sure. 11-0 Freedom vs. 12-0 Battlefield. What else could you possibly want in a Region Championship? This game was expected last year but Battlefield was upset in the first round. Both of these teams are very good and Freedom is in for a big test. It will be hard to go to Woodbridge and knock off a team that could probably beat some smaller college teams. I’m expecting Freedom to pull away in the 2nd half again this week as they did last week against Forge, but they better come ready to play because they have a big target on their back and Battlefield is capable of beating them (although they will have to play a virtually flawless game to do so). I like Freedom in this one, the winner will play the winner of the Highland Springs vs. Manchester game in the State Semis.

2. Briar Woods @ Stone Bridge (-14)
- Stone Bridge won the first meeting between these two, 29-12 and I’m expecting something similar this time around as well. Stone Bridge has won at least the last 9 in a row in this series so I have no reason to believe that streak will end on Saturday. But, anything can happen in the playoffs, as we have seen. The winner will face the winner of #8 William Fleming (who Stone Bridge beat last year) vs. #3 Matoaca.

3. Fairfax @ Lake Braddock (-13)
- And now for the Fairfax County games. Lake Braddock won the first matchup against Fairfax back in September, 21-9. I believe Kris Jones was still healthy in that one. Lake Braddock is a well oiled machine but they can be challenged, as I witnessed on Friday against West Springfield. The Bruins have 2 losses on the year (Madison and South County) and I think they are the better team and should win this game, but Fairfax is getting hot at the right time, so you never know. The winner will play the Westfield vs. Madison match up.

4. Westfield @ Madison (-4)
- Co game of the week, (Yes, it should be the game of the week but Freedom vs. Battlefield is a battle of two undefeated teams.) this game is going to be fun! Madison narrowly beat Westfield back in October on the road. This time though? The game is in Vienna where Madison has a significant home field advantage. Counts vs. Simmons part 2, who knows what’ll happen in this one. I can see Westfield pulling off the upset, as they are capable but it’s going to be extremely challenging. Madison will shut down their run game so Westfield is going to have to plan accordingly. Looking forward to flipping back and forth between this game and the Freedom game. (Let’s hope NFHS has a good week like they did last week!)
