Another week of some really interesting playoff football, you gotta love it! I also want to shoutout the schools that actually take the time to update the time, quarter and the score on NFHS Network in live time. Lake Braddock and Madison do a good job at that and myself and I'm sure everyone else is very grateful. I saw South County was down big and I wanted to see for myself and the score at the bottom said Away 0, Home 0. 0:00 1st quarter, even though it was the 3rd. C'mon now, it can't be that hard to update the score! That's my only complaint and yes, it is petty, I know! I'm glad NFHS Network was also working at every game this weekend though.
1. Colonial Forge @ Freedom-Woodbridge (-28)
- The Freedom train continues to roll, this time 52-16. The game was actually very close for the first half and then Freedom wore them down. Keep in mind, Forge was 10-1 coming into this game. Heck of a season for those guys.
2. Fairfax @ South County (-17)
- This one absolutely shocked me, just like South Lakes losing last week. This one, however, was more shocking. The Stallions fall at home 30-6. This is a team they easily handled earlier in the season 50-7. The only thing that I can think of is that the rumors on here about South County losing their QB due to injury was true. I don't see how they lost that bad at home. Stunning. Congratulations to Fairfax, who will be in the Region Championship for the 2nd straight season. How many of you guys had Fairfax advancing this far in your bracket?
3. Herndon @ Madison (-13)
- Madison won 37-7, but the game was 8-0 at halftime. Another example of a better team wearing their opponent down in the 2nd half. Madison (as I'm sure they are used to) will be playing after Thanksgiving yet again. As for Herndon, this is the furthest they made it in the playoffs since 1985. They finished 8-4 and made it to the semi finals, losing to a very good Madison team is nothing to hang your head over. Great season Herndon! They have come a long way in a short time.
4. Massaponax @ Stone Bridge (-30)
- Stone Bridge won 35-14, failing to cover. Massaponax gave them everything that they had, unfortunately, it wasn't enough. The Bulldogs advance to the 5D Championship, playing after Thanksgiving is the norm for the Stone Bridge program.
5. West Springfield @ Lake Braddock (-3)
- Lake Braddock walks away victorious, 38-21. I watched the first half of this game and it was very entertaining. The Spartans scored with ease on the opening drive of the game and it had me wondering if they could play that strong for all 48 minutes. The game was competitive for the first half (which is all I watched). The Bruins were up 17-14 at the half and I guess Lake Braddock put their foots on the Spartans necks in the 2nd half. I will say from what I watched, both teams displayed potent offenses with both being able to pass and run effectively. The Spartans did have some key penalties which killed momentum, in my opinion. I did not watch the 2nd half as I switched to the Westfield game but hats off to both teams for a fun first half. I wonder how much talent the Spartans lose to graduation but if it isn't much, watch out for them next year.
6. Yorktown @ Westfield (-17)
- Westfield comes away with the win 21-14, stopping Yorktown on 4th and 2 from the Westfield 2 as time ran out to get the goal line stand and the win. I turned this game on in the 2nd half when I saw how close the score was. This was also a fun game. Westfield sacked the Yorktown QB in the 4th and ran it back which would have made it 28-14, but it was called back due to penalty. The clock ran almost nonstop for the 2nd half with Westfield almost exclusively calling running plays. I was very impressed with the Yorktown offense, who had to go 80 yards in 4 minutes down a score with their season on the line. They played very composed and their QB made a few really impressive throws on the final drive to get the Patriots to the Bulldogs goal line, but at the end, it wasn't enough. Hats off to both teams for another really good game. I think Yorktown might be better than their record showed and Westfield is back to playing after Thanksgiving.
