The good news for Westfield is that only one of the suspended kids is on defense, the strength of their team. Think I heard it was a secondary player so their D will still be stout. I agree with the previous post, look over the past few years at the 5A/6A teams who've won championships. The one thing they all have in common is a handful of two way players. Westfield for years has had their star players practice on both sides but come big games not have them play both ways. If they want to ever win another title they should follow the model that just about every recent champion has had, two way players.

I also agree with the previous post that talked about the selfishness of the handful of idiots who put themselves before the team. The Westfield coaches should send a message to this as well as all future teams and just cut these kids. They obviously don't care about their teammates or team, if they did they wouldn't have acted so foolishly.

That's a positive way to look at losing some players. Keep the strength of the team strong, shut em out, and play for the tie.

Hate to see kids lose a big part of their senior season. Yeah, yeah, I know they knew the rules, but my guess is, in the scheme of life, it wasn't that big of transgression.

A very nice win by SoCo. They've been a long time coming but that was a solid all-around good team. That being said, I expect Lake Braddock will likely be the favorite for 6A North at this point. Westfield had absolutely NOTHING on offense and still managed to score 3 TD's - I suspect LB will be able to double that number.

Westfield missing 6 starters and SoCo barely squeaks out a victory. They are not a championship team.

Westfield kids miss 3 more games. May lose another game or so.

Lake Braddock looks like the top team. Centreville vs Braddock will be interesting if Centreville can stop turning the ball over. 9 TO's in 2 games.

Beating Broad Run and Tuscarora will be a big challenge for Centreville before getting to Braddock.

Did anyone notice Madison knocked off Stone Bridge? That was the real upset of the week.

Anyway, I put Patriot District off to the early lead in 6A North. This is my post-Week 2 top 10:

1.Lake Braddock
2.South County
3.Centreville
4.Westfield
5.Battlefield
6.West Springfield
7.Oakton
8.Madison
9.Chantilly
10.Robinson
10.West Potomac

I still give Centreville the benefit of the doubt until someone beats them. Westfield has now been beaten but once they get the Varsity offense back it might be enough to put them back in contender position. I thought Scanlon did a nice job at QB with no weapons. He was poised and did not turn the ball over.

A lot of surprises this week as team’s start to show their true identities. For 6A it is going to be an exciting season as a number of teams are in the mix for the title. It is definitely the most up-for-grabs it has been in quite some time.

Annandale @ Lake Braddock (-14.0)
Lake Braddock wins 40-0
*Very impressive performance for the Bruins who have yet to give up a point their first two games. Will have the game of the week against Robinson next Friday, both teams are strong this year, should be a special one.

Briar Woods (-10.0) @ South Lakes
Briar Woods wins 24-20
*South Lakes is definitely improved and a serious threat to most teams in the Liberty this year. They’re going in the right direction under Coach Taylor.

Broad Run (-7.0) @ Langley
Broad Run wins 45-21
*This game got ugly late was close until the middle of the 3rd. Nonetheless Broad Run has a good squad this year.

Edison @ West Potomac (-20.0)
WP wins 66-13
*West Po is good and Edison is very bad.

Fairfax @ Centreville (-21.0)
Centreville wins 28-6
*Strong performance for the Wildcats, they won’t put up as many points, but if this team is going under the radar of some, it’s a mistake. They will make a deep November run.

Herndon (-14.0) @ Stuart
Herndon wins 30-13

Jefferson @ Washington-Lee (-35.0)
Washington-Lee wins 35-6

Lee @ Chantilly (-35.0)
Chantilly wins 49-7
*Chantilly will play a measuring stick game at Stone Bridge next Friday in another Fairfax-Loudoun showcase.

Marshall @ McLean (-14.0)
Marshall wins 28-17
*Surprise win for Marshall and the loss is a horrible one for McLean. Quick, when is the last time Marshall beat a 6A school? I believe it was McLean several years ago. McLean is in for a very long season. On the other side, Marshall has a big game against Edison next week that they can win. If they do, with Lee, TJ, and Stuart still on the schedule a .500 year is a realistic possibility.

Potomac Falls @ Falls Church (-3.5)
Potomac Falls wins 62-14
*Wow, was not expecting that, probably the most off a spread of mine has ever been. Falls Church and Wakefield are getting clobbered by out of conference teams. Is their conference the worst ever? Regardless, Falls Church isn’t that bad, and Potomac Falls has peaked my curiosity. If they convincingly beat Langley next week I will definitely check them out.

South County @ Westfield (-7.0)
South County wins 26-19
*If Westfield truly was missing 6 starters it bodes well for them as they were very evenly matched with South County. The best player on the field was #9 the SOPHOMORE receiver for South County though. He’s a very special player and with him on the field the Stallions are always going to have a great shot at winning.

Stone Bridge (-17.0) @ Madison
Madison wins 35-24.
*This was a big surprise too. Stone Bridge appears more average than I originally thought. Them coming off a loss doesn’t bode well for Chantilly next week but as I said above that will be a big measuring stick game for both programs.

TC Williams @ Oakton (-3.0)
Oakton wins 24-0
*TC Williams had numerous opportunities to score but came up short each time. Oakton appears to have a strong team with wins over two quality teams in Madison and TC. TC appeared to be a little over confident after their 65-0 win last week and the talk of them winning the region on here can stop for a little while. Still TC is a team heading in the right direction and they will knock off someone good this year.

Tuscarora @ Hayfield (-6.0)
Tuscarora wins 40-14
*Another surprise and a big win for Loudoun.

Woodson @ Robinson (-17.0)
Robinson wins 56-0
*Robinson was obviously dominant. Game of the week against Lake Braddock this Friday.

Wakefield @ Yorktown (-6.0)
Yorktown wins 24-7

West Springfield (-28.0) @ Mount Vernon
West Springfield wins 47-13.

Thank you schedule makers! Four great games in the Fairfax vs. Loudoun series; and of course the county showdown between Robinson/Braddock.

Annandale (-31.0) @ Stuart

Broad Run @ Centreville (-7.0)
*This is a very intriguing game. Broad Run comes in 2-0 and has dominated their first two opponents. I am still on the Centreville bandwagon, but the Wildcats can definitely lose this game if they don’t get consistent pressure on the QB.

Chantilly @ Stone Bridge (-6.0)
*I can see this game going either way; I just have trouble envisioning SB dropping two in a row and with this one at home I don’t think it will happen.

Fairfax (-10.0) @ Woodson

Falls Church @ Herndon (-3.0)

Hayfield @ South County (-25.0)

Lake Braddock (-7.0) @ Robinson
*Game of the Week: This one will always be close. Lake Braddock was probably the better team last year, but at home, still lost to Robinson. With the Bruins outscoring their opponents 109-0 I am going to pick them in a close game but nothing would surprise me in this rivalry.

Langley @ Potomac Falls (-10.0)

Madison (-21.0) @ McLean

Marshall (-1.0) @ Edison

Mount Vernon (-28.0) @ Jefferson

Oakton @ Tuscarora (-10.0)
*Picking the home team here, but another fantastic installment in the Fairfax/Loudoun series and the third great game this week in the series. Both teams come in undefeated and an Oakton win here would officially bump the Cougars into a contender in my eyes.

Washington-Lee (-6.0) @ Wakefield
*This one could go either way, will be a good one in Arlington on Friday.

West Potomac (-7.0) @ Briar Woods
*A measuring stick game for the Wolverines.

West Springfield (-45.0) @ Lee

Yorktown @ South Lakes (-7.0)
*An intriguing early season conference game.

Westfield (-14.0) @ TC Williams
*I think TC Williams has a bounce back game. Not good enough to beat Westfield, but they’re better than their last showing.

What do you do for a living? Just curious. I figured you write for a newspaper about high school sports, but then I was thinking you could be unemployed and just sit in your room all day studying high school football information.
Either way, you're actually not a bad handicapper.

South County @ Westfield (-7.0)
South County wins 26-19
*If Westfield truly was missing 6 starters it bodes well for them as they were very evenly matched with South County. The best player on the field was #9 the SOPHOMORE receiver for South County though. He’s a very special player and with him on the field the Stallions are always going to have a great shot at winning

---------------------------------------------------------------

Westfield was truly missing 5 starters, both WR's, one OL, one RB, and one DB. As it showed they really missed the offensive players. The backup QB was also suspended, he's the more natural QB than #10. Really, #10 is more of a threat at the WR position than at QB so maybe it would be fair to say the Bulldogs were missing 6.

Either way it was a good game, SOCO is very talented as is Westfield when fully represented. The young WR for SOCO is very good, as well as their QB and RB's.

Westfield's strength is their D, especially their LB's, looked like the fast pace of SOCO's offense didn't really overwhelm them, they just tired from being on the field too long. Not sure what the number was but Westfields defenders had to play close to twice as many plays as their counterparts on offense. Once their offense gets back with the return of the missing starters they'll be fine.

SOCO doesn't get enough credit for their defense, they are pretty solid as well. Both these teams are the real deal, should do well and it will be fun to watch as the season progresses.

Excellent discussion point. I looked at this way... LB put 62 points on SoCo last fall. They return most of their starters from last year and have outscored their first two "cupcake" opponents 109-0. Centreville barely got past "cupcake" Annandale. And SoCo had a difficult time with Westfield's JV offense. It's 9 weeks away but mark down August 6 on your calendar. LB Vs SoCo. Where would you put LB and why?

SoCo had 62 plays, Westfield 43. Not counting special teams plays. They converted a number of 4th downs and gained an extra possession on an onside kick recovery. Yeah, that #9 is an incredible talent. Looks like he could be playing D1 ball right now. He made every catch. Not used to seeing that in high school.

So what's opinion of SoCo trying the onside kick so frequently? That kept giving Westfield's struggling offense decent field position. SoCo did recover 1 but I wonder if it was worth it.

Other observation is that Westfield's special teams play so far very shaky. Missing short field goals, missing extra points, mishandling virtually every punt. Didn't look good out there at all. The punting was solid.

TCW only had 36 yards of offense and 2 first downs for the entire game. Crazy that people were hyping them based on a game against TJ.

Once Tuscarora got their legs under them this became one-sided very quickly. Hayfield has a weak enough conference that they'll make the playoffs but they'll probably get blown out in the first round.

I don't understand why Woodson has such a poor football program. It's a big school, pretty affluent, and a good all-around athletic program.

Centreville only beat Annandale by 10 but went up on them easy 3 score to nothing at half. They then started shooting then selves in the foot. 6 turnovers in that game. Easily beat them by 35-40 points most nights.

Annandale was 4-22 passing. Game was never in doubt!.

Westfield struggled on punt return because two of the suspended offensive players are their main return men. Kick offs and punts solid for them, field goals not so much. Their kicker has a phenomenal leg but not to sure a it his accuracy.

SOCO did convert some 4th downs, also on TD was a blown coverage. That might have been due to missing DB that was suspended. The kid who blew the coverage was the backup.

Westfield would be smart to blitz a backer every once in awhile. They sat back in coverage and gave SOCO's QB too much time. Similar to last season when the Bulldogs allowed Lake Braddock QB to have a field day. Then when they met in the post season Westfield blitzed on almost every pass play. The result was 6 or 7 sacks and the inability for Braddock's QB to get comfortable.

SOCO probably attempted so many onside kicks because they were not afraid to give Westfield's depleted offense good field position. It was very odd Westfield kept attempting to run up the middle when it was obvious it was t working. The play calling for Westfield's offense was definitely questionable to say the least.

They didn't have anyone that could catch the ball. The sophomore TE couldn't hang onto 3 first down passes and a wide-open RB dropped 1st down as well. Westfield defense was very disciplined and stayed in their lanes and didn't over-pursue. They had a couple coverage sacks in the first half. Their tackling was outstanding.

---------------------------

Dropped pass by backup running back, dropped punts by backup returners. Only playing until suspended players return. SOCO very talented, Westfield lost by 7 with half their offense missing. Once again as the previuos posts suggest they will be fine. That's of course assuming no other starters decide to act stupid and selfish.

Well 82 I think caught a few, 88 I believe as well, think he had one TD. Threw one pass to their LB, 41, playing TE, all that resulted in was a 46 yard TD. Think they might have tried getting him back out on offense. Just curious as to why they kept trying to run when it was not working. Even more curious as to why the RB who had 100 yards and 2 TD's last week never carried the ball.

Ever hear of HUDL...the great thing is...film doesn't lie...several "dropped" passes were the result of #130 parking his big a** in the middle of the field and not being very Mobil...#10 almost took his head off twice trying to get it to the TE...#130 would be the official and if you have room for three digits on your back your taking up space...soco's best defensive back. As for #9 as soon as any team that doesn't run Zone realizes how to jam him at the line he's done...Film doesn't lie..and teams will see it, if his numbers not called he's not working hard at all..force him to fight off the line he's a different ball player..Hudl great Tool answers all the nay Sayers and Sunday morning Critics..

So how did he play in westfield's defensive backfield? Or did he only play one way? Either way, there is no need to disrespect our hardworking VHSL referees. It's a thankless task and if you can do better get off your fat a** and learn the job yourself.

Stop whining. Winners win and losers whine. Both teams knew of this pivotal match up was in week 2. However only the Westfields kids decided to put their season in jeopardy and their loss was self-inflicted. Enjoy being on the road the second round of the playoffs. Fortunate they'll have a second chance.

SOCO Nation, there is NO WAY SOCO is going to state, let alone winning state this year. I am glad to see that you are fully behind your team, but please don't set your expectations too high. Getting to the playoffs should be your primary expectation and certainly something that can be accomplished with this squad. Beyond that, it's not going to happen. That would be like the Redskins ending with a breakeven record this year. It is just not going to happen!

As to your recent victory against the Westfield JV offense, congratulations on winning by such a large margin. Let's see you do it again come November when all the players are back on the field in uniform. hahaha

You are a dipshit; I would of liked for the punt to be blocked and for Soco's punter to break a leg but you can see on hudl in slow motion where the ball clearly gets kicked and the WF defender just got there a little too late.
