UPDATE
The police department investigation of the crash that resulted in the death of Joseph Taylor has concluded. The following information is a result of that investigation.
# There was an approximate one hour delay in initial reporting of the crash
# The crash most likely occurred shortly after midnight
# Speed and alcohol were factors in the crash
# Mr. Taylor was not wearing a seatbelt
# The cause of death was a broken neck, according to the medical examiner

"Based on the totality of the circumstances, the officers did everything that was reasonable and prudent and, unfortunately, did not find the car at that time," says Fairfax County Police spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt.
"Part of that has to do with the terrain, part of it also has to do with the dynamics of the crash and the fact the car went airborne after hitting the curb, prior to hitting the house, so it left no discernable tire tracks or anything like that."
The next morning the 1997 Mazda was found 127 feet from where it struck the curb. It was in the backyard of a home in the 1300 block of Rock Chapel Road.
Taylor, who had been drinking and was not wearing a seat belt, broke his neck and died.
"The minimum speed when the accident occurred was approximately 80 miles an hour," Gotthardt says.
