7) Football, sports and clubs within high school are a family. These help teach kids social skills, leadership, respect, work ethic and camaraderie. Also how to deal with fear, multi-tasking and disappointment without resorting to guns, violence and faithless religion (whole different subject I know).

A comprehensive, statewide study of high-school student-athletes in North Carolina over a three-year period found a significant difference in grade-point average, attendance rates, discipline referrals, dropout rates and graduation rates between students who participated in athletics or other activities and those who didn't.
In fact, student-athletes in the study had a 5 percent higher graduation rate, an 8 percent lower dropout rate, 10 percent fewer discipline referrals and missed six fewer days of school. Athletes' grade-point average was 2.86 vs. 1.96 for nonathletes."
