No. Like the decision of Radford to name the building after a racist in 1967, the naming Fairfax high schools after Lee, Stuart and Woodson were also acts of defiance to the then growing civil rights movements and acts of enshrinement to the Lost Cause. Is it time to consider following Radford's example?

Lee's mother died at Ravensworth. He spent his early years in Alexandria and his family also owned Clermont off what is now Franconia Road. As an army officer, Marshall lived on many posts. A VMI graduate, he was a Virgninian by choice. When Lee resigned his commission, he did so because he did not want to engage in combat with his fellow Virginians. Southerners often felt more loyal to th

Mr. Woodson realized integration was inevitable - sort of like gay marriage today. He wasn't a seg, but he WAS a southerner. Like anyone else, he had definite biases. Click on the link to the remarks by B. Oswald Robinson above T. C. Williams, Superintendent of Alexandria City Schools actually fired a janitor who sought to enroll her children in integrated schools. say Wrote: -----------

Mr. Woodson was not enthusiastic about the Brown decision. Although a southerner (He was a graduate of William & Mary), he was not a segregationist. African American principal B. Oswald Robinson had this to say about working with Mr. Woodson: http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/faculty_archives/principalship/r/155robinson.html

Luther Jackson High School opened in 1954 (a few short months after the Brown decision) as the first high school for African American students in Fairfax County. Black students previously had communted to the District, Alexandria, or Prince william for their secondary education. Luther Jackson was NOT the first school constructed for blacks in the county. Several elementary schools such as Vie

I had one truly great teacher in FCPS. Mary Kay Garwood, grade four. She encouraged me to read and she inculcated a love of local and state history that continues today. That having been said, I had more losers than good ones. One teacher used to keep supplies in old malt liquor cans. He tossed a board across the room and hit a kid (me) with it. He was not disciplined. The Assistant Princi

The lakes appear on the 1962 aerial, but the 1949 shot shows what appears to be the convergence of two creeks. If there was a lake at that time, then it was very small. Lurker. I would like to know EXACTLY where it was. I have heard about its proximity to Snake Den Lake. Where was the lake? I went to http://www.historicaerials.com/ but could find nothing on the 1949 map which might have been the Lake. I thought the lake could have been renamed Lake Fairfax but it does not appear on the 1949 photos.

I have wondered about the Amanda Perry situation. Employees on administrative leave are not permitted anywhere near their work station. They are required to remain at home or at a place where they can be reached easily. They are not supposed to work another job during their normal duty tour. I suspect that Amanda Perry took another job and she got caught at it. When I was on administrative l

Plenty of wildlife at GMU . . . I once saw a wild turkey running across the softball field closest to University Drive. I saw a piebald deer (in a small herd) near the West Lot Circle. There is a fox den near the entrance to the intramural fields.

Spotting a team 17 points is not a formula for success. Throwing a pass on third down in what could be the last possession of the game doesn't make sense if the clock gets stopped. Hokies should have run on third down. If they make the first, the game is over. If they don't get the first, run the clock down on fourth and then punt.

In the cases cited, a police officer probably witnessed the violation. No cop is going to pass up the opportunity to issue a summons in such a situation. If a cop did not see jack pass a stopped school bus, then there is no need to worry.
