Those people in the middle of the road are not waiting to cross, they are discussing the need to improve the intersection in light of the rapidly growing population. That particular conversation continues to this day.

I have a question about the last two Quality Courts pictures.
In Sleepy Holla's pic, there are steps up from the perking lot to the landing where the rooms are.
In Fairfax Fred's pic, there are no steps, the landing is level with the parking lot. This is the way I remember it. I stayed there a couple of times back in the early 80's and I don't remember those steps.

Is the building under the "Best Oil" sign the old Penguin Feather? I remember it in that location, and in an old building but not sure it is one in the same?

Also, that looks like a big-ass house to the left (and thorough the tree) of the Weber Tire building - anyone know more about that one? I am surprised a few more big houses didn't survive like 5 chimneys in Fairfax City.

I admit I was wrong about the Ice House on the location of the Weber Tire location. If you look at the recent photo posted that shows the Weber Tire building, there is a sign on the roof that says Murphy and Ames.

Murphy and Ames was a lumber Company. There is the aerial photo from 1937 that shows nothing at that location, and Weber tire opened for business in 1952, so the large white building was built between 1937 and 1952?

I believe it was taken from a slide...the color quality is very good....it looks like the slide is reversed. If you look at the postcard the left side room elevation is higher. Also, look at the 1961 Olds Ninety Eight...the steering wheel is on the left facing it. Reversing slides is an easy mistake.

No, they are waiting for the Penguin Feather store to open - about 25 to 30 years later.

Three aerial images: 1) 1949, Tyson's Corner, zoomed in to show what I assume is the Myer's Gas Station that features in so many vintage photos of the intersection; 2) 1962 aerial zoomed further out, showing the widening of Chain Bridge Road approaching from the east--but not reaching the intersection yet-- as construction of the Beltway (just off view) is proceeding; 3) 1964, with reconfiguration of the intersection underway and the northerly rerouting of 123/Chain Bridge Road foreshadowed.

Two finals for the Tyson's Corner then-and-now comparison: 1) A composite of the intersection in 1957 and 2015, showing, among other things, how Myer's Gas Station would be sitting in the modern day median of Route 7 just south of the 123 overpass; 2) A 2015 aerial of the intersection and its approach from the east, with the former route of 123 superimposed, showing a) where 123 ran before the circa 1964 reconfiguration and 2) the remnants that exist to this day; i.e. today's (unnamed?) road to the north of the Korean restaurant (Woo Lae Ok?) on Rt.7 and the Crate and Barrel, and then curving immediately to the rear of the gas stations at the top of the hill/Intnl Drive intersection, before connecting to the modern Chain Bridge Road roughly where the sign for the mall is, immediately short of the modern day bus drop off for the Metro.

On the 1957 Chevy the gasoline filler neck was on the left side fin.

Did anyone notice the price of a haircut on the barber shop window?

That 57 Chevy looks pretty new and shiny, so I bet the picture is from the late 1950's.

That's definitely Vienna, taken from across the street from the Scot Gas station. About where the Outback Steakhouse is today. Not sure where that re-located building ended up.

It's because the shot is from the other side where you can't tell that's what's happening, and it looked better this way on film. It's only about 15 seconds in the show. Darren McGavin is playing Kolchak, pretending to be a gas attendant while asking locals for clues about the Bunny Man. Some other scenes were shot at the Remey Crypts for that one. Great episode!

If you say “blinker” to someone now-a-days, you will likely hear it repeated back: “blinker?"

Actually, if you blow up the picture, you can see that there's a telephone or electric wire across the road that's blocking the way. Look just above the end window/below the roof-line.
I guess he's there to help guide the wire over the roof when whichever utility comes along to loosen things up a bit.
Maybe?
Don't know why it's not mounted as high as the other wires.

The Putt-Putt was where Patriot Harley Davidson is today, just West of Fairfax Circle.

We used to go there as kids in the 1970's, best friend's brother worked there for a bit as well.

That area was seriously prone to flooding, and after several bad years, they never repaired it. It was still there thru the mid-80's but all overgrown.

I never thought anyone would use that lot again, but Patriot Harley built there. You notice too that Patriot Harley's building is actually built up about 2 feet higher than the rest of the lot... I'm guessing this is in case of any further flooding.

The pic could be another location, but the Fairfax City location looked very similar.

I remember they closed the Fairfax Putt-Putt a couple times after flooding.

The Driving range and mini-golf in Oakton -- where the AT&T building is now -- also lead fewer people to play at Fairfax. That location closed around 1977-78 to make way for AT&T.

Part of an older Washington Post article about the son of the original owner of Kaezano Pizza, Anas Shallal, AKA Andy. His dad was Ahmed.

Andy ended up owning Busboys and Poets in DC.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
After Ahmed’s term was up, the former diplomat bought a restaurant called Pizza Kaezano — one of those greasy-great places, in an Annandale shopping plaza.

Behind the counter were the Shallal brothers, Anas, 15, and Yasir, 16. This is where they became Andy and Tony. It fit the expectations of customers, who thought they were Italian.

For Andy, the restaurant was a revelation. There, he felt at ease.

“I loved washing dishes. I loved making pizza. I loved mopping the floor. I loved serving customers,” he recalls. “You don’t need to say a lot when you’re serving someone a good meal. It’s like you’re speaking through food.”

His parents considered the restaurant a recourse to make ends meet, not a worthy career. The family plan was for Tony to become an engineer, Andy a doctor.

Tony complied, Andy quit medical school after three courses.

Nothing was working out, including a marriage, at 20, that lasted five years. Two sons from that relationship are now in their 30s.

The exception was restaurants, first as side jobs, then with ambition. To him, a restaurant was never just a restaurant. “Seeing the community that you’re able to build with food was just tremendous.”

In the mid-1980s, he was managing a restaurant inside the Omni Shoreham, when he met a hostess named Marjan Saghafi. She was slim and elegant, the daughter of an Iranian general.

Maybe, hard to tell from that pic. The Bailey's one had a big "drive-in" area in the back parking lot.

Okay, I know this is off topic so I wont bother you guys after this. Looking at all those VW's that only came in 5 colors and you had to do something to make your VW stand out from the rest so you can like express yourself, dig?

Nice! That place is now like a indoor pool/rec center isn't it?

I was a west Springfield/Burke kid growing up but somehow I think I have a vague memory of that place, was it like that in the early 70s? I might have gone there with cub scouts or maybe Braddock road boys club.

Honestly, I never heard of it before I found the picture online.

Here is a Wash Post article By Annie Gowen December 1, 2013: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/tech-entrepreneurs-renovation-of-hickory-hill-signals-new-business-guard-remaking-dc/2013/12/01/dfbf3c46-2c4f-11e3-8ade-a1f23cda135e_story.html?utm_term=.eef0d0f2976d

"Hickory Hill, Robert F. Kennedy’s onetime home in McLean, Va., is being renovated by tech millionaire Alan J. Dabbiere. (Bill O’Leary/The Washington Post)
One day a few years ago, the construction trucks began arriving at the big white house on Chain Bridge Road.”

Around 1963, well before I was born, my Dad bought an English Ford (Ford made in England). He said he paid $1300. It was a total lemon and he paid untold amounts getting it fixed after it's frequent breakdowns.

The mechanic who worked on it in the Beacon Hill area of Rt 1 was called by my Dad "Herman the German."

Herman told my dad, "You should have bought a Volkswagon".

My dad said a Volkswagon would have been only a few hundred $$$ more.

He learned a valuable lesson.

It's like the old Fram Oil Filter commercial; "You can pay now or you can pay later."

My Dad had an Anglia and so did his friend...both used them only to commute to the Pentagon. My Dad sold his and his friend donated his to my HS (a few years before my time) to be used as a hammer smashing fundraiser. Back when kids could have fun.

Was before 1954, thats when they added a wing to the south. In this pic are the historic court house circa 1800 and a bit of the 1920's addition. Cars are parked on 123 and Main the roads must have been narrow. Or that's the walkway now. Is that stone monument still there facing the Bank of Fairfax or the Tavern back then ? I just went by there Monday and saw a bunchy of Old Heaps in Fairfax City there that looked just like the ones in the Pic..LOL

I think that monument was moved when the addition was put on and its now more to the 1920's entrance to the building facing 123 unless they removed it completely. The Brass Cannons are or were where its at in the pic..and the welded cannonballs..

Far in the background is the Old Jail to the right. That was the jail till they built a new one in the 50's when they added the new wing. Back when this pic was taken they Sheriff did not carry a gun and he did not want to take care of the law in the whole county as he was understaffed and did what they could. In 1940 the BOS created the FCPD with the Va General Assembly's approval as a result. And from then on the Sheriff's Dept served warrants and took care of the court's security and jail.

There were also some constables in Fairfax County back then that gave speeding tickets and enforced laws in some areas of the county that had more people like RT 1.. they reported to the BOS and had to submit written reports of what they did each month to the BOS for their pay checks.!

OLD Pics..If Your ..18 LOL !

Taken by DAJAX ten years ago pals.. The Original Court House has the outline of the long windows in the above pic in this thread taken before 1954..The Front Windows were longer at some time too..In The Front is a time capsule that was placed there in 1976.Under the front porch. The entry pic is the 1920's entry. The Name was changed to Fairfax County Courthouse not that long ago.15.. some..It has to used as a Courthouse or it will go back to the heirs of the family that deeded the land in a gift I think..Way Back 1790's so..
The Cannons are there and also the stone monument that was in the pre 1954 pic here.

DAJAX..Give Um 50..and they too will be historic..!

Some of you guys were talking about the English Ford, My Dad bought one too. I don't remember much about it except it was white and had a two speed manual transmission.
Anyways, who besides me is old enough to remember crossing this one lane bridge over the railroad tracks on rolling road? We lived in Kings Park and my older sister went to West Springfield high school. The county school busses generally would not use this bridge. There was another longer route to WSHS.
