Young Blanche's family would go to the Hot Shoppe at Bailey's Crossroad or the Cafeteria in the NASIF building on Sunday's after church.

If she ate her meal without much trouble it was off to the pony rides that were located across Columbia Pike from the HS.

And when we got home, Blanche's parents would take an "afternoon nap" but that is another story.

I was very young, and my parents lived in Annandale. They would take me to that pony ride, and I seem to remember a small ferris wheel. That was over 50 years ago.

Thanks for the pic of the pony ride. I am going go through my parents old pictures from that time, and see if there are any Pony Ride pics.

I worked out at his place near Fairfax several times in the 90s and looked him up recently.
His business is still going.

Actually it carried the W&OD over Potomac Yard. The grade separation between the W&OD and Potomac Yard was a legacy of the original 1850s railroad construction when the W&OD's crossed over a small valley on a bridge, through which the highway, the railroad and the Alexandria Canal ran.

It looks like Pickett Road Shopping Center in the late 1960's before Fair City Mall was built in the early/mid 1970's.

I see the Dart Drug that would be in the Fair City Mall years later.

It looks like it is on a stick mounted to a platform. The kiddies climb up small set of stairs, get into the copter, and the chopper goes up and down.

I think I flew(rode)one of these in my younger days.

The topography of the area changed with the construction of Potomac Yard. I don't know of any topographical maps of the area that predate Potomac Yard. The 1878 map of Alexandria (now Arlington) County shows the W&OD, then called the Washington & Ohio crossing the rail lines to DC and the canal, but there are no topographic features shown.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/1878_Alexandria_County_Virginia.jpg

There is at least one picture of the rail line showing the original bridge over the turnpike, railroad and canal in the distance, but I cannot locate a copy on the internet.

Enlarge the photo to 300% and you will see the details of the copter and the platform. I doubt that even in 1967 that a small helicopter would be operating so close to small children.

Is the Pickett Hot Shoppes, Jr. now Enstein Bagles (after being Roy Rogers for awhile)

or is it the other side of Picket, where the Mcdonald's is now. I'd say the McDonald's as Einstein faces 90 degrees different.

The photographer was standing in front of Ross’ (then, Safeway) facing Picket and looking down, over the Picket Shopping Center with Dart Drug (now Chuck E Cheese) and Hot Shoppes Jr. You can see the apartments behind Dart Drug. The pony rides were in the Safeway parking lot close to Picket.

Nice! I worked there for one summer, I think maybe 1979. Mr Cohen was the owner.

I worked there too, summer '79. Mr. Cohen was the owner and Al Caffo was the manager. Al treated all of us kids like we were his own. I remember Al letting us top off our tanks and didn't care if your plate was odd or even. I also remember when the company came in to change the pumps so they could read $1.00 per gallon. The old mechanical ones topped out at 99 9/10. Good times for sure.

Sometime later on, this gas station became a Sinclair Station if I am not mistaken.

I always liked going to that Denny's when I was a kid but it blew my mind how there were two Denny's within a mile of each other. Anybody know why there were two so close? They definitely co-existed for a good number of years. For some reason the Denny's next to P.J. Skiddoo's always seemed nicer than the one at the corner of Lee Hwy (Fairfax Blvd) and Chain Bridge Rd.

Speaking of restaurants in that corridor, anybody remember the Victorian Station restaurant or have pictures of it? It was approximately where the Freddie's and Hooter's are now on Lee Hwy (Fairfax Blvd). After it was Victorian station, I believe it became a Po Folks.

The Denny's at 123/50 used to be a Sambo's and changed to Denny's at some point during the mid to late 80s? Maybe the beginings of political correctness?

The Victoria Station restaurant became Champions Sports Bar in the early 90s.

Was this the Fairfax Victoria station? It was posted a couple pages back but we were not sure of the location.

That’s not true, is it? I thought that corner gas station (which is really cool, by the way) bit the dust and Penguin Feather was up the hill (29N/50E) a smidgen.

It did become a Penguin Feather, but it wasn't there long. I was kinda funny to have the Mister Donut so close if someone had the munchies.

Yes, I distinctly remember warning signs that were put up by penguin feather employees on the back of the building sayin that Mister Donut will tow your car if you park in their spaces and come into penguin feather. I think that is why PF moved after a couple years, lack of parking.

Yes, that's Victoria Station in Fairfax. It was located at Lee Hwy. & Plantation Pkwy, where the CVS is now. The current address of the site is 10090 Fairfax Blvd.

That picture was taken on the east side of the building, looking North.

From the late 80's in the Woodlawn Shopping Ctr. at the 8700 block of Richmond Hwy/Rt. 1.

Back in the day they also had a High-Gear, Radio Shack, the 22309 Post Office, People's Drug, an A&P, etc.

Cool pic -- thanks for sharing. I recall there was also a Victoria Station near the Red Lobster on Van Dorn St in Alexandria. I don't remember much about them except they had quite an interesting train motif inside.

I don't recall the Denny's being a Sambo's but I wonder, then, if the Denny's locations in Woodbridge on US-1 (which recently closed) and Manassas, which have similar architecture and floor plans to the Fairfax location, were also originally Sambo's? As far back as the early-to-mid 1980s, the Woodbridge location (on US 1) was a Denny's.

I know for sure that the Denny's on route 234 in Manassas was a Sambo's and it changed to Denny's in the early 80s. I was poor back then and was living in a apartment right down the street from Sambo's.

I went to the Victoria Station in San Diego in the early '80s. They had refurbished train cars set up as dinning rooms. The place was massive and it felt like you were walking into a real train station. I'm sure it cost my dad a weeks wages for our family of six to eat there!!!

There was a Sambo' at Rt 123 and Rt 50 that became a Denny's. There was a Denny's at Rt 50 and Rebel Run. - Circa 1980

Someone already stated that there was a Sambo's in Fairfax City, and the name changed to Denny's sometime in the 1980's. Why do you keep asking the same question?

I can't make out exactly what kind of car is parked directly in front of the dealership, but it looks like a 1959 or 1960 Chevy. The other cars are from the late 1940's. Is it possible this pic is earlier than 1966?

The name sounds familiar (?) but I can't place the building... From a quick google search though, now I see why, because I'd never been to Merrifield until the 90's.

"A recording studio located in the Virginia suburbs of Washington D.C. It was initially located in Merrifield, but relocated to Falls Church during the mid-1970s."

Not only do I remember the recording studio, I remember Susan Bodnar as well. Haha. There can only be one.
She was my lab partner in Earth-Science class in Falls Church High School 1979-80. She's a good person.

Looking through the historical imagery viewer it does not appear to have ever been a gas station. It is odd how it is set back from Lee Highway so far. I worked in Merrifield from 1989 to 1994 and I cannot recall ever noticing this building! I would cash my paychecks at the bank that used to be across the street, which I believe was a Nations Bank at the time.

Thanks for the research about that building. What made me think it was a retired gas station was the shape of the left side of the building, and the odd configuration of the large windows - Almost like there was bay doors there.

You brought up another interesting point, and that is how the building was set back off of the hiway. Like gas stations do.
