Young Blanche loved Giffords! That Swiss Chocolate sauce --yummy.

The picture looks like the one on Lee Highway though. Currently a resaurant that closed its locations in Fairfax and Vienna recently. Joe's Pizza, unless that location has closed also.

Blanche first on a new page. Woohoo! Too bad there's not a prize for that.

We use to go to the Bailey's Gifford's. But I remember the one in N. Arl too. How can you tell the difference?

I was about 8 or 9 years old when my mom took a group of us little ones to Gifford's in Annandale for ice cream. It was located on Little River Turnpike very near the intersection with Backlick Road.

We went there in her wood covered Country Squire station wagon. This was years before there was a Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor in this area.

I don't think there was ever a Giffords at the location you are indicating.
Rather, the closest one ca. 1956 was in Bailey's Crossroads, on Columbia Pike.
It is now a dry cleaners next door to German Gourmet.

(I live in Annandale just behind the shopping center at Gallows Rd since 1961
and we used to go to Giffords all the time...)

You a correct. I just got off of the phone with my mother, and she confirmed the Bailey's location. At first she was startled by the question about something that happened in the summer of 1968, some 49 years ago.

What do 8 year old boys remember? Wherever it was, it was a fun time. The ice cream was great, and I also confirmed it was a Ford Country Squire Station Wagon.

Thanks for waking up a great memory from a long time ago

My Dad bought a new car from Logan Ford in Springfield around 1971. I had no idea there was a Logan Chevrolet.

Okay, not a old local picture but it's from the Washington post. That is a sweet deal on a state of the art VCR for only 700 bucks!

There was a Sunday January 4th in 1987, and one in 1981 (leap years throw off easy 7 year calculations).
I would guess with what is offered, this would be the 1981 version.
But for me, I all I see is the little 5" b/w AM/FM TV in the top left corner of the ad. That looks like the same set that I was watching, at work, of all the things happening on a certain September 11th, 16 years ago.

There was only BETA back in 1981, and Super TV.

VHS was out by 1987, so it is probably 1987

Richard Nixon lived in Fairlington when he was a congressman. I think his building has a plaque on the door.

Love that place, I remember the first time I went. Huge Culmore sign, tons of illegals around, was sure my car was going to get broken into. Spitting distance of the 7/11 where half of Guatemala hangs out.

JVC released the first VHS machines in Japan in late 1976, and in the United States in early 1977. Sony's Betamax competed with VHS throughout the late 1970s and into the 1980s (see Videotape format war).

Seeing the AMOCO photo which indicates they had "certified lead free" gas got me thinking about WHEN unleaded gas became a "thing". Doing some quick Googling so far I haven't found anything that would indicate unleaded fuel was even available in 1967. Maybe "lead free" and "unleaded" are not the same thing? LOL

True or not I just found this statement:

The article "The Rise and Fall of Organometallic Additives in Automotive Gasoline" tracks the unleaded offerings of American gasoline companies in detail. Although the following quotes would seem to contradict, they imply that some unleaded gasoline was always available, typically as a "premium" product: Sun and/or Amoco.

From Wiki,

While most oil companies were switching to leaded gasolines en masse during the mid-to-late 1920s, American Oil chose to continue marketing its premium-grade "Amoco-Gas" (later Amoco Super-Premium) as a lead-free gasoline by using aromatics rather than tetraethyllead to increase octane levels, decades before the environmental movement of the early 1970s led to more stringent auto-emission controls which ultimately mandated the universal phase out of leaded gasoline. The "Amoco" lead-free gasoline was sold at American's stations in the eastern and southern U.S. alongside American Regular gasoline

"6-hr. video cassette recorder"??? What does that mean. I never recall a tape that could record more than two hours.

Yep. And that EP recording was some high-quality, o yeah! You could almost tell what was going on :)

(OK, at the time, it didn't seem that bad--but after a decade of HDTV, it's amazing to see just how bad it was!)

Interesting. I guess my family really never did much recording so I was not aware of the different recording options. Mostly used the VCR for video rentals. The hours spent at Blockbuster looking for that perfect movie!!!!!

Yea. We forgot... I don’t think forgetting was a problem back then. Maybe we were stoned and forgot. Okay, we forgot.

I remember gas stations having stacked tires like that at the end of the pumps. Think that was to prevent crappy drivers from running into the pumps?

I remember tires being wrapped in a gold or silver colored foil to get your attention.

I think the Police car is a 1971 or 1972.

It is not a 1974 because it doesn't have the 5 mph bumpers that were mandated for 1974 on cars sold in the U.S.

Torino's are 2 doors, right?

Seems kind of weird for a cop car...kinda hard to cuff and stuff, isnt it?

But, on the other hand, I guess the cop knows the perpetrator cant jump out of the back seat.

Torinos came in 2 or 4 door versions, and so did Mavericks.

I am not exactly sure, but I think the "Gran Torino" was a 2 door version with the half vinyl covered roof and was a personal luxury car, as was the Monte Carlo.

I thought it was common back at that time for a "paddy wagon" to transport people who were being arrested rather than the officer doing it in their patrol car? The officer continued to patrol and the paddy wagon dudes dealt with the transport and booking crap.

I love Fords from the 70s. My second car was a 70 maverick.

This is the way I remember the Torinos,,,

Torino
Torino wagon
Gran torino
Gran torino squire (wagon)
Gran Torino sport (2 door)
Gran Torino brougham (4 door with vinyl roof and other bling)

Somewhere along the line there was a gran torino sport sportsroof better known as the fastback.

And of course most of these were available in a Mercury version called Montego.

There is a difference. I think at one time the sign was on the side of the building, very cute.

Andy's was good for its time, the cracker-like crust probably wouldn't make it today.

Frozen Dairy Bar!!!!!

We used to go into the Curio Shop that was located just to the left of the FDB while enjoying our cones.

Coming Soon CVS -- that's progress...

I have drawing from "Local Color" of Gifford's, Frozen Dairy Bar, and Chez Francois displayed at Chez Blanche.

Now let's hope nothing happens to L'Auberge.

Haven't been in the area for many years, but didn't FDB move the ancient custard machines to another location? We spent many Saturday's at the Radio Shack next door. Also does anyone remember the flattop wearing white guy at Best Car Wash, or the sketchy Picasso shirt wearing sweaty bald guy riding his bicycle in the area?

I remember that flattop guy at the car wash. He looked like he was stuck in the 50's
That bicycle guy is still around. Last time I saw him was like 3-4 weeks ago by the Sears at 7 Corners. The last few times I have seen him he wasn't riding his bike but pushing it instead. Someone said he lives on Sleepy Hollow Rd.

RR Tracks cross RT 1 in Northern Virginia in just a few places-

I can't place the RR Bridge in RT 1 in Alexandria. Is it possible that the location is in the Del Ray area?

The year is 1961 or 1963 because the license plates on the cars a white. I see a 1960 Chevy, and a 1960 or 1961 Chrysler auto, and yes, it is a Fiat.

The trestle connected the W&OD line with Potomac Yard. The elevated road bed of the track is now a walking path behind DelRay Animal Hospital.

That rail road bridge is no longer there...however, you can see the old alignment on the right side (from the vantage of this picture) heading south on 1...elevated area that angles into Rt 1.

Basically at the south end of Potomac Yards.

Thank you for the exact placement of this photo. I know where the RR bridge crossed RT 1 at the old RF&P rail yard. All that was left is the old concrete bridge support on the right side of RT 1.
