I would say that the picture is from somewhere in Great Britain. All the cars are parked on the left side of the road. In continental Europe, (Deutschland included) they drive on the same side of the road as we Yanks do, the correct side (I mean the right side).
I see a few old Saabs in the picture, and it looks like a few Morris Minors as well. Possibly a couple old Porsches.
Front and center is a '55 or '56 Chevrolet, but that is the only obvious American car that I can see. Maybe the photo was taken by a Yank living there at the time. Maybe an American military base?

causeican, you went into overload there! Great pics, Thanks!
I will point out that the Vienna picture is not Maple Ave, but the road next to it, that parallels it, Church St.
It looks like it was taken right about where the Freeman Store is on Church St. I used to work in Vienna, and recognized the church and the little island in the road in the center of the picture.

You are correct, the taillights are different. I glanced at what looked like the classic Chevy logo on the trunk.
I should've looked at actual pictures first. LOL.
It does look GM'ish, and Holden is, or was, a GM product. Maybe you are correct.
Does anyone else with more expertise want to chime in?

Was that Route 1 or was it Washington Street in Alexandria. If it was the latter I was at the gas station next door a week ago. I went to the Little tavern a few times in the early 1980s when I worked down the street. I believe it is now a Chinese carryout place.

I’m thinking Washington St, near where the roller rink use to be and on the same side of the road, but idk.

Speaking of the Alexandria Roller Rink, by the late 60's and early 70's, it started holding concerts there...and many big time bands played there, including the Doors...of course, Jim Morrison spent some of his high school years in Alexandria.

Heard the story that during the Doors concert, Morrison whipped a cymbal into the crowd, and somebody got cut pretty bad...forgot where I heard that.

His high school, GW High (now a middle school) is, as the crow flies, probably about a mile away, maybe closer.

Speaking of GW High, Earl Dixon, of Hillbilly Haven fame (and Donna Dixon's father) was an all state tackle on the football team at GW, and also kicked field goals.

By the 60's, the GW High football stands held close to 10,000 people. Semi pro games were played there, and as I was told, the NY Jets and some other team played an exhibition game there...Joe Namath was QB.

Who knew, huh?

BTW, that old Little Tavern is still there on Washington Street, now a Chinese take out.

i have to protest Anita's being shown in B&W as if it's been here since the 50's

i remember in the late 80's and 90's when anita's (full size) restaurants came in at two locations - vienna chantilly

i also remember area union workers were protesting it and telling people it was a NON-USA establishment and not to eat there

i'm well aware some people would like to make false "historic" entries (ie, that anita's is part of earlier fairfax history: it wasn't)

Get your facts right. The first Anitas dates from December 1974 which pushes it back into the earlier good old days of Fairfax. It was in an old doughnut shop in Vienna. Their first sit down restaurant didn't come along until the 1990s. It is all in the obituary of Anita Tellez, the co-founder of the company.

The original Anita's in Vienna was a sit down restaurant...initially just a few tables in the front, by the mid 80's they had added the "tent" in the back that seated probably ten small tables.

Sorry it gets fuzzy, there are still matches in it, and they take it out of focus in the scanner.
Plus, with the recent mentions of The Little Tavern, there was one right across the street of the Falls Church location. So I guess if you got the munchies, you had a place to go to.

Captain 20 and The Banana Splits
Not necessarily Fairfax Co. only, but was something that a lot of us "kids" used to watch in the afternoon after we got home from school. Back when channel 20 and channel 5 were independent, and played lots of great old TV shows and movies.
The man that played Captain 20 also hosted Creature Feature late on Friday or Saturday night, playing some cheesy old horror film. I'm sure somebody here can tell me who that character was.....

Man, look at the traffic! How did people ever get around?
(Sorry, a little sarcasm there)

I remember riding in the car with my Father down Broad Street in Falls Church, after coming home from the Hechingers that used to be on Lee Highway. As we got to the crossing for the Washington and Old Dominion railroad, the train started to cross the road, so we had to stop. Of course, me being a little kid, was fascinated by the sight. I watched every car go by, all the way to the caboose.
After it had passed us, I looked around at all the other cars that were waiting. There were about 7 or 8.
If that had happened today, there would be a 4 or 5 mile backup.

How many people know of these? The Boundary Stones that mark the original location of Washington DC.
How many people know that Washington DC was originally a square shaped city? Ten miles, by ten miles, by ten miles, by ten miles.
What is now Arlington County, originally was a part of the Federal City, also known as the District of Columbia. Eventually they gave the land that we had donated, back to Virginia.
I don't need to babble any more, you can read it, and see about these stones for yourselves.
http://boundarystones.org/

http://www.wusa9.com/travel/open-road/dcs-first-monuments-boundary-stones/447402386

Here are a couple pictures that I took over the years of the Western Cornerstone of Washington DC.
In the first picture, notice the lines going up the stone on the 2 sides. That marks the boundary of what was Washington City, The District of Columbia. Then after it was given back to Virginia, it became Alexandria County, and later, Arlington County.
In the second picture, I am just inside Fairfax County. If I were two feet to the left, I would still be inside Arlington/DC.
In the third picture, I'm officially in the Falls Church City limits, which at the time the stone was placed, didn't exist yet, it was still only an area that was part of Fairfax County.
What is carved on the Arlington/DC side, originally said: JURISDICTION OF THE UNITED STATES. And on the Falls Church side, it has the inscription of 1791, stating when it was set in place.

There is a Boundary Stone in the middle of Jefferson Street in near Skyline -- closer to Columbia Pike than Route 7. Its in somewhat better shape than those in the pictures. It has a fence around it.

I hadn't been to Jones Point in a while - it's the site of the first boundary stone which was laid in a Masonic ceremony. They cleaned up the place quite a bit and put in some new boundary stones leading up to the original.

There were odd/even days for gas, depending on the last number of your license plate, cant remember what happened if your tag ended in a letter. People bought locking gas caps to keep someone from siphoning your gas tank.

I do remember stores having restricted hours, I think Sundays were only open for four hours. There was a pizza place in Annandale that ignored the restrictions and stayed open late anyway, nothing happened to them except they made a huge profit.

I watched Captain 20 religiously in the 1973-1975 time frame.

Speed Racer and Ultraman were my two favorite Channel 20 shows.

We had only a Black and White TV at the time.

Captain 20 would interrupt in his Mr. Spock rip off outfit with cheesy spaceship (string showing).

I had a Channel 20 Club Card

I can remember excitedly retrieving it from the mail box.

They did a drawing for a Herbie The Love Bug Go-Kart - it looked just like the love bug. This must have been a promotion for the Movie "Herbie Rides Again" which came out in 1975.

The drawing was done live on Channel 20 by Captain 20.

The winning Channel 20 Club Card flashed across the screen

I wanted to win that thing so badly - of course I was only 6 yrs old so I wouldn't have been able to use it if I had won.

You had to love the way the lips never matched the words. As kids we had limited entertainment options but hey, we had a good time!

Remember the gerbil races?

I don't recall there being an industrial building at Cameron and Columbus in the 1970s. If that is the funeral home, it would probably be a couple of blocks west.

Stores were closed on Sundays and holidays. The 4th of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas eve, Christmas Day and New Years Day - Everything closed. If you forgot to get gas the day before, you were shit-out-of-luck.

I'm pretty sure that funeral home is on the northeast corner of Cameron and Columbus.

I also think the parking lot where them fellers are standing is now townhomes, with a parking garage underneath.

To the "right" of that funeral home, meaning, between columbus and n washington st, is an optometrist office (now)...some 40 years ago, in a yearbook, I found an advertisement for a hobby shop in this converted townhouse building.

That's the ice rink and indoor swimming pool in Belle Haven, next to Ft. Hunt Rd

The Belleview Apartments and Old Wilson Bridge can be seen in the background.

I remember when the Ice Rink first opened in the late '70s. The Pool was added much later.

It became a pool after the air conditioner broke, and the ice rink melted.

It was a HoJo's opened in 1950 until 1968, then a supper club, and has been been Pistone's Italiian for quite a while. Nice Photo.

Does anyone know the history of this building? I heard a story of there being a business called Service Garage in there before and after WWII; Virgil Williams was the owner; and he would display a new car for sale in that large bay window which now has dinner tables. The post office use to be adjacent to it. At that time, I think it was quite small.

Woodlawn Shopping Center on Richmond Hwy across from Cooper Road, near Mt Vernon.

Has to be 1982 or later because the ugly barn looking structure that took up half the parking lot was removed in 1982, and People's Drug returned. It had been a McCrory's since the mid 1970's.

Did that place later become a Rainbow Tree? I remember going in there once, and I'm pretty sure I got a Blue Oyster Cult belt buckle there, but in my memory it was a Rainbow Tree. Also remember Flipper McGee's was right across the street from there.

Guess I should've read more of the thread before I made the post above. I guess the place in Falls Church wasn't a Rainbow Tree. I do remember the Annandale Rainbow Tree (later became a Penguin Feather) though. Once when we were in 6th grade we found a bag of what we guessed was weed by the side of the road. We later rode our bikes up to the Annandale Rainbow Tree and bought a small bong to smoke our found weed. They let 3 6th graders buy a bong and test that it didn't leak in their bathroom. We ended up smoking our find in Roundtree Park. Nothing happened, but looking back that was probably not one of the smarter decisions I ever made.

The funeral home you're thinking of is the Cunningham Funeral Home. Google maps shows it as the Cunningham Turch Funeral Home. It is at the northeast corner of the the intersection of N. Alfred Street and Cameron Street. That's one block west of Christ Church.

There was a hobby store in a townhouse on the north side of Cameron Street in that block. I went in there several times. I've forgotten the names of the owners. They took over the old George's hobby store, which used to be on the north side of King Street. I'd have to check an old city directory to get the address.

Anyway, George sold the business to this family. They ran the store on King Street for many years, I guess starting in the late 1960s. I can't remember when they moved to Cameron Street. Early 1970s, perhaps?

As much stuff as I bought from them, I ought to recall their name.

A lot of things that used to be parking lots then are townhouses now.

Thanks for the picture.

Some time later, I was on temporary duty as the park manager due to the failure of the pool filter assembly. Again Mrs Little volunteered to assist. Isn't she so helpful? The CORRECT answer is YES.

The Fairfax Stone.
How many of you know about this place?
It's not in Fairfax County anymore, and I guess it hasn't been for a while. It's in what is now West Virginia.
When we were still colonies of England, King George III gave to Thomas, Lord Fairfax, all the land between the spring-head for The Potomac River, and the spring-head for The Rappahannock River. Everything in between belonged to him. In essence, Fairfax County.
The first picture is the plaque that's mounted on top of the large stone in the next two pictures.
The second and third pictures show the spring for the "mighty" Potomac River. Everything heading straight ahead out of the picture, used to belong to Fairfax. (That's about the direction of the Rappahannock.) The water itself, and a little bit of land on the left side, is Maryland, since, by colonial decree, it belongs to them.
ps. I just checked with Google Maps before I hit enter, and it looks like they have changed what they consider the border between Maryland and West Virginia AGAIN in that location. About 6 months ago, their border went to about 10 feet west of the stone. A couple years ago, it was about 100 yards south. I don't think continental drift is to blame for that. Only inaccuracy.

Ah, the days when cars looked different. Back when you could not only tell the difference between a Chevy or a Pontiac, from a Dodge or a Plymouth, a Ford from a Mercury. Not only could you tell one make or model from another, you could tell which year each one was.
Nowadays, it's hard to tell a Toyota from a Nissan from a Volkswagen from a Chevrolet. And to tell the different years? Yeah, right. Maybe different decades. But the vast artwork of the automotive industry has gone.
Aerodynamics? Bah, humbug. When you're stuck in traffic, and your top speed is maybe 45MPH, does that really mean anything?
ps. Nice cars, by the way. Even the few VWs. Thanks for posting.
I wish that I could go back in time with my current camera and take a few pictures of what was the "run-of-the-mill".

Agreed--with a few exceptions, like Lexus and Acura, both of which have distinctive family looks. Alas, those looks are ugly as hell! (Yes, that's one man's opinion, and people can reasonably disagree--presumably someone at Acura and Lexus thinks they're attractive.) Lincoln and Cadillac have somewhat of a "look" too. But even venerable brands like Jaguar have succumbed, and are mostly indistinguishable.

My dad could tell a 37 from a 36 (and so forth). He was always a trip to watch movies with -- he'd spot some car in the background, note that it was the wrong year (too late for the period of the movie). And then 20 minutes later he'd mutter "There's that Buick again!" as it cruised by in the background.

I can tell the model year of cars I've owned pretty close -- but not to the year; as you note, they don't vary enough, and only go through periodic refresh cycles. In the old days, they'd do *something* every year, presumably so the Joneses could tell that they weren't keeping up...

grump, grump, hey, get offa my lawn!!!

OK, I'll play.
Yes, I actually worked at a Volkswagen dealership, Stohlman's in Tyson's Corner. Twice!
I know that they opened in 1971 and were one of the first, if not The first car dealerships in the new Tyson's car dealership complex.
While never actually owning one myself, some of my brothers and sisters did over the years. One of my brothers used to keep cans of Sterno in his Bug, to warm your hands in the middle of winter, because the air cooled engine just didn't provide any real heat to the car in the middle of January.
And my Father bought a VW Camper in the late '60's that we all had many family memories. But he bought it from Lee Volkswagen in Springfield, because Stohlman's at Tyson's hadn't been built yet.
