Close and maybe the same thing, The Ramp had to be made longer, I suspect your correct they are pushing it into the mall. At West OX it is on a trailer of sorts to put it in the hangar.

Look at all those cars. They really demolished a thriving business district. I had know idea. I don’t ever recall seeing any of that, Does anyone know where the Arlington/Fairfax or Falls Church border was drawn before 66?

I lived in the Westover area when they were putting in 66 there. These aerials are great.

Is the building in the W&OD viaduct picture (3/4/68) the VEPCO power plant that the Old Town neighbors hate for (actually) burning coal?

Did this guy go out every year to take pictures or is the 3/4/69 mislabeled?

Gordon Plaza was/is located very near the intersection of RT 1 and RT 123 in Woodbridge.

The picture was taken sometime around 1976.

As a teenager I worked next door at LUMS one summer. When there was a bowling tournament going on LUMS would sell the hell out of some draft beer served in frozen glasses. We would put them in the freezer right out of the dish machine while they were still damp and people loved that ice cold beer in a frosty glass.

Anthony Musolino was the architect of Annandale Lanes. He also designed Bob Peck Chevy and Robinson and Langley High School

I wonder if he is related to that arsonist Matt Musolino that burned down Fort Hunt High School back in 1978?

I never associated the Annandale Bowling building with Bob Peck Chevy, but now that you mentioned it I can see some similarities between them. Thanks for posting that connection.

A little LA (lower Alexandria) lore for ya, as it relates to Musolino and the Fort Hunt High Fire.

There is a very complete thread here on FU about it, but here are some questions:

Did Matt Musolino's uncle not only design Langley High, but Fort Hunt High as well? Too funny if he did.

Did he also design the old shopping center at the intersection of Rt 1 and Powhatan Street in Alexandria?

I believe it was torn down in the 70's, but at one time I believe this was meant to be a "gateway" site, now a bunch of town homes...

It's too bad they didn't just build around it.

There are neighborhoods where they've kept the old house built a bunch of new houses around it. One is MT. Vernon On The Potomac. Of course, the old house was still occupied when they built the new subdivision. I guess Fairfax County didn't want to spend the $$ to save Osian Hall. Shame.

Because (a) the photographer doesn't get credit, which is morally wrong
and (b) it decreases the amount of money the photographer could make.
that's why it's illegal.

I thought Ribster's was good.

I moved to Annandale in 2000 and it closed only a few years later. It was one of many restaurants in Annandale the at was bought by Koreans and converted to a Korean Restaurant.

Today, Annandale has few non-Asian restaurants. Silverado is still there. Other than that, just somPizza/Italian food places and assorted fast food.

Interestingly, I saw a documentary about Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana). He grew up in North Sprinfield, just across from the Braddock Rd/Ravensworth Rd. intersection. In the mid '90s, after Kirk Cobain's death, Grohol moved back in with his mom for a short while (according to the documentary). In the documentary, he mentions hanging out at the Ribster's Bar. I am sure hardly anybody watching the video knew what he was talking about, but I sure did.

The Jerry's Sub Shop in Annandale was another Restaurant years ago. Located on RT 236.

One file compares the Beulah Rd/Maple Ave. intersection in Vienna in 1950 vs. that in 1973. The other file is the same intersection (Danor Plaza gives it away), circa some later date (definitely not rush hour....)

it appears to be something fx co gov would do, although some such things were done by area volunteer (or contractors) to help spiff up the park of the community, done with permission of fx co gov. way back they often wouldn't put up a park sign unless it was a donated one. at one time the old "scrawl out letters in a board, paint letters gold, rest of board brown stain" was very cheap and popular

the land is a stream therefore it cannot be "privately owned" by law, and is park land - check old maps and new for zoning or park re-zoning (note if park land is removed it MUST by law appear elsewhere, excepting waterways which are always park land, n.i. ponds)

park encroachment HAS been (and likely IS) a problem in fx co - developers have been "busted" for developing on park land (cp - land they didn't even pay for - your land and my land)

I always liked Ribsters, though I was just a kid so I wasn't too discerning. I do remember that their onion rings came in a big brick. That was cool.

I also loved the Old Chicago Pizzeria, which was around the side of the Giant in Annandale.

Cool old Woodies 7 Corners Postcard. Cool that back in the day upscale stores had "postcards".

The Rib Rack in Mount Vernon has a fantastic onion ring loaf. We would swing in there, and get a few beers to go along with the loaf.

Does anyone know when that building at the corner of Burke Road and Lake Braddock Drive was put in? It's at this location: https://goo.gl/maps/A51d4B7LFdD2

Also there was a building next to where the pond is now, shown in the pink circle. The image is circa 1949:

I grew up in MV but I don't remember the Rib Rack

Where was it?

The Rib Rack was up the hill from the intersection with Buckman Road and Rte. 235 heading towards Woodlawn.

The building looked like it had been, wait for it -- a Red Barn. It was on the left hand side of the road when you were going south.

Yes I remember it was next to the Thieves Market antique mall. Rib Rack was in a old Red Barn fast food restaurant - Someone painted the old Red Barn Green.

There was another retired Red Barn a couple miles north on RT 1 near Lockheed Blvd

Joke, I would assume it was put in when the subdivision was developed, which was in the early 1970's.

Don't Quote me 100%, But I would assume it was made when the Community was developed 71-73, I have never followed the Overflow in the pond but am pretty sure it dumps into the lake at the end of Kendrick Ln (Metal couregated pipe), The house that still exists from what I understand was a Dairy Farm on the other side of Burke Rd. There was a Pit at the end of westport lane in 73 (the high area behind the dam and close to the townhouses) that was pretty deep with Rocks and rubbish and a Ball Peen Hammer :(

I never asked about the pond or did I circle the pond. There used to be a structure in that field next to where the pond is. That is what was circled and that is what I was inquiring about.

Dickhead, you asked when the pond was put in. Since the pond is not in the 1949 photo logic would state that it was most likely put in when the subdivision was developed. LOL! If you were asking about something else, you failed miserably in framing your question.

More Annandale love - here's the Annandale Recreation Club pool and "TEENSPOT". Looks to be early 1960s. Definitely a place where Gidget (very young Sally Field from the TV show) might have hung out.

My family had a membership here for one year in the mid 60s, but I don't remember the teen hang out. But that was before I was a teenager anyway.

Found the photos on the Annandale Chamber of Commerce website.

Easy there liam. There really are no rules here, just try to be nice to everybody and enjoy a few memories please. Maybe you can find some old yearbooks or other sources of old pictures and share them here. Thanks!

Remember the Kmart diner? I worked in Tysons in the early 80s and we used to walk to the kmart on route 7 for lunch a couple days a week.

Fran, I don't remember the Kmart diner...very cool. I do remember the Korvettes diner...where one of my good friends worked...after she worked at the Hardee's on Columbia Pike...now Starbucks.

Also...Chances are after 7266 posts some pics may be repeated...no big deal. Let try to keep this the sane and civil thread on here. Thanks to all for any contributions...large or small.

I wonder what their issue was with Coca Cola?

I remember getting into a heated argument about Coke vs Pepsi with a waitress at the Pizza Hut on Franconia Road some 30+ years ago.

We ordered a pizza, and I made the mistake of ordering a Coke with my pizza. The waitress retorted in an aggressive tone that they proudly only sell Pepsi products. My response was that is fine - It doesn't matter they are all the same.

This set her off, and she started yelling at me that I was wrong, and that Pizza Hut was owned by PepsiCo.

I told her she was right and we all got up and left the restaurant. Her last words to us was "Where are you going"?

We had Chinese instead with a 12 pack of Bud.

Many restaurants get into pissing contests with Coke and Pepsi. It's basically who is going to do more for you and with how much respect. It was the same for years with Anheuser Busch and Miller Brewing. Smaller companies (or Independents) are brushed off by the big bad Coke, and they become Pepsi diehards.

On the Coke/Pepsi issue, does any one remember the Black Rooster downtown putting on their menus-"we proudly use Pepsi products" and then something like we'd never use Coke?

I remember somebody elsewhere explaining it to me that as a start up, they couldn't get the time of day from Coke, when they started to have a good business, Coke reps would start calling, but...they remembered, and stuck with Pepsi.

So maybe that explains it in some instances...

Pond at Burke Road and Lake Braddock Dr

Back in the ancient daze,, When the Burke Post Office was in Browies Gulf, Across from Carson's Trading Post.. There was a farm at what is now Burke Rd & Lake Braddock road
The farm house was across from where LB Drive is now and the Barn was where the corner is today,
There was a small stream back behind the barn and about 1961 or so the farmer dammed the stream and made the pond.

Used to ride bikes through there going to Carsons Trading Post for a 16oz RC!!

Dang, Geezerdude, you've about seen it all as it relates to the NoVa explosion...it sounds like you were around before Tysons Corner Mall, before Lake Braddock High School...etc...

Tell me more? Were you in the 'Nam?

Damn! That brings to mind the good-ole days. Not that I was ever in Burke then, but just your story reminded me of what it use to be like.

Fran, Thanks for the photo...yea, Braddock was one of the "new" schools. We would go and visit one of our old coaches who went to work at LB.

Jungle Book. That was my favorite. I can almost hear it now.

Was there a balcony or was this picture taken from the projector room? I always thought balcony’s were cool. Stairs in general. If there were stairs [to somewhere], I had to go up them (or down them) to see where they led. I had to go fast too. Always running. haha. It’s fun to remember.

People with cameras back then did a good thing. I never had a camera with me. It never occurred to me I needed one. Thanks to whomever took this one.

The State is ingrained in my memory, because of some "firsts".
We had just moved here from Maine. My Mom and our family's
best friend's Mom (they lived here already and were showing us around) took us
to the FC Burger King......My first Fast Food ever. Then we went
to State Theater to see a Movie....
so 2 Mom's and 4 Kids (all under 12) went to see...
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. We all left early.
My Mom's friend thought it was a family western. :)

I went to State many times later w/ friends to watch
stupid (Kentucky Fried Movie etc) films and sneak in
mass quantities of Beer.

Even though I went to the Annandale Theater often, I didn't realize it was so large. Opening ad from rivest266.

Is that a UFO in the upper left corner?

I circled it in red here.

Hahaha, one time in the late 70's my friend stepped on one of those glass stink bombs as we were leaving a matinee show at the Annandale theater. The smell was so bad inside the usher ripping tickets moved his little podium further out of the doorway.

And in the state we would sit in the 1st row on the balcony and toss popcorn and candy on the viewers below. Good times.
