Thanks for the picture -- still looking for it in color.

The Village Inn flyer, I'm thinking that is where the Asian Buffet, Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse, Barbeque place was located on Commerce Street.

Remember those projection TVs? They had those 3 colors on the projection unit that sat on the floor in front of the huge curved screen.

To get the best view, you had to sit in direct line of the screen.

That clown on the coupon reminds me of John Wayne Gacy the serial murderer in Chicago.

Don’t be too amazed. There isn’t any traffic. It must have been early in the morning.

I have an original oil painting from local artist, Virginia Bennett of the YMCA on 236. It was painted in March 1977. It was my mother's who now has Alzheimer's. If anyone wants it I'd be happy to sell it for $200 and send the proceeds to the Alzheimer's Association. Please contact me at slgryder@aol.com, if interested. I can send you pics. Thanks!

I remember those TV's well. As I recall Mr. Muggs on main street in Fairfax had one and I watched a Redskin game there one time. Hi-Tec stuff!

I don't remember Lums being there but it is quite possible. Mr. Muggs was quite similar to a Lums inside. It was always dark in there and they had those candles in the red glass with the fishnet wrap around them at each table. They also had several pinball machines and video games.

Lums had these huge frosted beer glasses which made the draft beer super cold. My dad went in there once and had a few too many, and got pulled over by the Fairfax City Police. They made him park his car in The National Bank of Fairfax parking lot, and they gave him a ride home.

35+ years ago they sold propane and gasoline, and it managed the trailer park. I think it was an American Gas Station. There was that place that fixed and had a bunch of VWs across the street.

Ted Britt Ford was still there.

Yes, the Fairfax County Historic Image Viewer is awesome.

I was at Fair Oaks Mall yesterday and I looked at that spot for 80, 72 and 90.

It was a Golf Course in '72 and the mall was under construction in '80.

I looked at Annandale in '72 and was surprised there was no access to Medford Dr.

making a left from Little River Turnpike as you headed east. John Marr Dr. was

under construction between Little River Turnpike and Columbia Pike, as well.

BTW: I looked at Tyson's corner in '37 and '53. LOL. LItterally it was just a

country cross roads.

You mean meat isn't grown in plastic-wrapped packages? Who knew?!

Srsly, another era. About 20 years ago, a neighbor shot a deer and hung it from his basketball hoop overnight. Neighborhood was scandalized.

This was of course in late fall: a few weeks later when Christmas lights went up, I wanted to buy one of those animated light-up deer and hang it from the hoop, but my wife wouldn't let me. I think he would have thought it was hilarious, actually!

1937 photo. Kamp Washington on the left and that row of trees to the right of that interesection is where Weber Tires is.

It’s funny how the roads there are cut out before any of the houses were built.

In 1937 the building that was to become the location of Weber Tire in 2017, was an ice house that supplied ice to the area.

You are correct - I was one street too far over. Weber Tire opened in 1952. I will look more into the 15 year gap for the ice house on that location.

Anybody remember this place on route 1? I purchased a few used fenders for the two Fords that I drove in my teenage years after hitting various roadside items such as trees and fence posts.

Looking at the junk cars in the ad, it looks to be late 1980s early 1990s. I think the location was in Stafford Co. or Fburg?

In the late 1970's I went to the Bank's Auto Parts on Smoketown Road in Woodbridge Va.

I remember that AAAA auto salvage was on the Lorton side of the river and Banks was on the south (prince William) side of the river. Both of them on route 1. This was late 1970s. Banks moved further south later on.

"Can anyone tell me what this place was?"

Causican, the building was a service station called Kenny's (Kenny's American), and the trailer park was part of the property as far as I know. Here's a picture from the early 1980s.

There's an office building on the site now.

I went to high school with one of the Banks' kids. They lived in a nice house with a lot of land on the section of Old Telegraph Rd north of Hayfield Rd. I'm just assuming, but it appears the parents passed away and the County now owns the property. The County has turned it into a park and for several years now there have been signs posted identifying that section of Old Telegraph Rd as "Banks Family Road".

Thanks for the GREAT picture(s)! I thought you were kidding about the VW place. Haha!

I totally cannot remember this stretch of the road. However, I’m from Arlington and didn’t venture out to the boondocks very often.

Here’s a picture of that stretch of the road in 2016 and I didn’t even have to go outside to get it.

That place usually was packed with VWs. The bays were always filled with VWs, front parking lot full of VWs waiting to be fixed, and sides of the building were storage areas -Lots of VW engines. Behind the building were parted out hulks of "Donor VWs".

Follow up:

That pic of the VWs was taken about 1980? In the early to mid 1970's that place was VWs Galore.

I think Fairfax City got after the owner, made him cull the herd, and clean up the property.

At some point in time there was a restaurant in that same spot that was owned / run by / sponsored by / whatever by Jeff Hayes (Redskins punter) and I believe another ex-Redskin. I remember their names being on the sign.

From Washington Post article 9/7/1987:

"Free safety Curtis Jordan and former Redskins punter Jeff Hayes enjoyed the food so much at Rocco's Italian Restaurant in McLean that they approached the owners, the Juliano family, and persuaded them about four years ago to open new locations. Armed with Mrs. Juliano's secret recipes, Jordan, Hayes and business partner Mike Agee have expanded the business and own three Rocco's in Northern Virginia. The four Rocco's have about $2.5 million to $3 million in revenue, Agee said."

Seemed like there was a VW shop everywhere back then, of course JC Whitney supplied the zoom tube for our '68 beetle my brother drive. I spent a lot of time in the back of that car as a kid making trips to Memco with my mom. Who would loudly and somewhat off key belt out any Eagles tune that came on the radio. And Linda Ronstadt. And Janis. Etcetera etcetera.

Moved here in '87 and remember this. Shortly thereafter the Ford dealer became a Mazda dealer. My parents bought a 929 there. After having bought a B2000, a 323 and a 626 in the early to mid '80s. See the pattern!!!

Parkington (later to become Ballston Common Mall) under construction in 1951. From a WETA blog, which I saw shared by Robyn Carter. Original source is the Arlington Public Library. This view is looking North-ish along Glebe Road.

Look at the rear license plate. It is shifted to the left, and on the Overland it is centered on the lift gate.

Research continues.....

Not really lived in, or from Fairfax County, but....
A local news video about a phenomenal local guitarist named Danny Gatton.
I used to work at a local business in Vienna, making what are called electric guitar pickups. They are the part of the guitar that makes it electric. The piece under the strings that senses the movement of the strings, and turns them into an electric signal, then sends them to an amplifier and into the sound that people hear.
Anyway, here's a video of Danny playing on a guitar that has the pickups that were designed for him. They were built in the little garage where I used to worked.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbNKMlrkHMc
The video is not from Fairfax County, but still local. The guitar pickups that he used were made here in the Vienna part of the county.
Other people around the world still use them.
http://www.joebarden.com/
Joe is now out in Manassas, but the majority of what we did for people of fame, were made here in the county.

Not quite. The photo says “1951” and the vehicle is only a two-door. Good try though.

That motorcycle’s crawling up his ass. That picture must have been taken around here.

Thank you very much for the honor - When can I pick up my award check?

I remember seeing one of those running down a dirt road in Alabama about 25 years ago. The rear tail lights and the license plate shifted to the left is a perfect match.
