Sorry to hijack thread but I found a couple of 1930 photos of industrial buildings in Winchester and Front Royal. Was wondering if anyone knows if these buildings are still standing and if so where they are at.

I got my Maverick from a neighbor who had let his kids take it to college. It had been in multiple fender benders and was blue with a orange fender and a tan hood. A junkyard classic! That little 6 cylinder Maverick got me where I wanted to go for about 3 years. It was NOT a chick magnet lol.

I believe the first picture is of the former Virginia Woolen Company building in Winchester. It appears to have been torn down, but the following is a historical marker for the plant.

http://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=96109

The second building according to one source started out as a piano manufacturer and after the silk mill shut down it became the Shamrock Furniture Co. It now appears the building is used by the Jackson Furniture Co. and it is at 239 6th St. in Front Royal.

Montgomery Wards auto service center actually installed a aftermarket air conditioning system in my Dad's 1972 Plymouth Valiant. It hung below the dashboard and was pretty noisy but it cooled the car off great.

Yes, it is Swanson JHs. It was built in 1939 With WPA money.

It's no co-incidence it looks very similar to the original MV HS, which was built around the same time with the same type of funding.

When I was a kid in the late 1970's and early '80s you could still see the remnants of the closed Marshall Hall as you looked across the Potomac from the GW Parkway, near MV.

Yeah, the "Wagon Wheel" sign indicates you are correct that it is heading south towards Hybla Valley from Beacon Hill.

I think the "Atlantic" became "Musso's" in the '70's. I was born in '69 and by the time I started paying attention, this view had changed. There was a Red Barn Restaurant in the '70s.

Ah...Musso's...had quite a history here...apparently/allegedly the source of fuel for the Ft Hunt HS fire?

For great Mt. Vernon neighborhood in the 70's views...go to YouTube, look for "Old Skating Movies: Virginia and California, 1974-1976" posted by DrAbalone, all one word like that.

Many will recognize the Mt V neighborhood, in one scene there is a street sign to give a clue.

The Westwood Motel was on Rt 50 (Fairfax Blvd) just west of the Anchorage Motel, on the same side of the street (south side). It was replaced by the car shops (Meinike and Valvoline) and the Hardies/Pediactric Dentist place. I would say it was replaced in the early 1980s.

I remember Musso selling gasohol in the late 70s. The summer we had the gas lines and the odd/even rationing I was able to fill up on gasohol there easily because most people were afraid to use it. The beater 1964 Ford Galaxy I was driving seemed to run just fine on gasohol.
It looked just like this except mine had plenty of rust and dents. The drivers door was screwed shut and I had to slide in from the passenger side.

I was so excited to see that pic of "The Barn" on Cameron in Falls Church. I grew up in the area on George Mason Rd and always remember that house. My best friend's brothers built a tree fort in the woods behind the house (when it was abandoned maybe?) I always wondered what became of it and had that picture in my mind, never finding anything on the Internet. This is way cool stuff here and brings me back. Thanks for the memories.

Glad you liked the Barn picture. I always thought it was a cool place before it burned, but was a bit too young to appreciate it for what it was at the time. I lived about 2 miles away from it, and we would sometimes take a detour just to drive past it to see it again.

Hope park mill Fairfax county Virginia.

From wicki,
History[edit]
Payne family[edit]
The plantation at Hope Park was founded in the 1750s by Edward Payne, a justice of the Fairfax County Court from 1764 to 1785 and builder of Payne's Church which was completed in 1778.[4] Payne served with George Washington and George Mason on the Truro Parish vestry and the then, Washington, occasionally resided with the Paynes at Hope Park. Payne is also credited with constructing a small grist mill, probably on Piney Branch which was on the Hope Park property.[4][5] A mill would have been an important adjunct to the plantation.[5]
Stuart family[edit]

20th century photo of the mill
Dr. David Stuart purchased Hope Park plantation in 1785.[3][6] Stuart was an Alexandria physician who was appointed on January 22, 1791, by then President Washington, as the member representing Virginia on the first board of Commissioners of the Federal City and he served for almost four years.[3][6] In 1789, Stuart served as a justice for the Fairfax County Court.[6] Stuart was also later named a trustee by the Virginia General Assembly for the towns of Centreville in 1792 and Providence (later known as Fairfax Court House, and then Fairfax) in 1805.[6]

I think the Texaco station is actually where Best Co (now Aldi) is located. On the far front left is the edge of a Gulf sign - that would be Penguin Feather in my estimatation. It says looking West which should be up the hill towards WalMart/Lowe's.

There was another Best Co located in the shopping center on Gallows Rd right next to Luther Jackson Intermediate in the early 80s.

I agree with you on the locations of both. That's what I remember also.
Speaking of Penguin Feather.....
Sorry for the blurriness of the matchbooks, the match heads kind of threw off the scanner, since it's not a totally flat object.
The bumper sticker has been on one of my old guitar cases for decades now.

The "DC Prices" sign was in front of the ABC store. D.C.'s liquor stores are privately owned, so the sign was probably there to advertise that the Virginia state-owned store prices were competitive with the privately-owned stores in D.C.

Very Cool, Thanks!
I love the fact that they did a side-by-side feature.
I only wish the video was longer, and came out closer to us.
To point out to people watching, toward the end, when they cross "N. Kirkwood Rd." The bridges crossing over the road that they see in the distance are not the same bridges. The bridge in the modern video is Interstate 66, and the bridge in the older 1949 video is an offshoot of the W&OD railroad. The locations were very close to each other, but not in the exact same place.

As I remember that intersection, the Penguin Feather would be operated out of a closed Sinclair gas station that was not built at the time this old pic was shot. The location of the Penguin would be to the far right of the pic, and the Mister Donut would be very close to the Sinclair station.

Interesting point of info is the Weber tire company. At the time this pic was shot the large iconic white Weber Tire building was a ice house, and as a teenager we would go there for block ice.

Annandale Dan, that's the shopping center now occupied by Walgreens(roughly where that Safeway was) TJ Maxx (where drugfair was) and Noodles and Company. It was largely unchanged, too until circa 1998. The Safeway was Pfaltgraf Factory outlet. City of Fairfax proudly proclaimed after the overhaul of that site that they successfully rid the City of "60s schlock."

So that would make it the Main Street Center, where Main Street becomes a two lane road through Fairfax, not Pickett Shopping Center

Shirlington exit 1940s. 395 was known as route 350 back then. Note the at grade railroad crossing.

Yes, I think you are right blanche. We always called it the Phaltzgraff shopping center when I was a kid. Pickett shopping center was down the road where Roy Rogers and Kosmos pizza was located right?

“schlock” who says “schlock”? Anyway, isn’t that what Walmart is? Anywhere now-a-days. Quality out. Disposable junk in.

Hope this works, but former C of Fairfax Mayor Mason used the term schlock! I recall reading this article:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/2002/05/02/for-small-city-a-big-decision-to-make/ececd612-d296-4489-9d99-406b1dcf3ebc/?utm_term=.fb6d8f87bce6

And to confirm, it's the shopping center at 236 Little River TPke

And, that distinctive architectural Safeway is famously called Marina style. The City of Fairfax's Marina Safeway was one of the last if not the last of its kind in Northern Virginia.

How do you tell the NoVa natives from the newbies? By what they call 395 -- Shirley Highway or 395. Route 350 is a new one to me.

The Shirlington Texaco is in that picture and the little bridge carrying the road over Four Mile Run -- a classic.

Shirley Highway predates the interstate highway system. I believe 350 was the road's original State Route number.

I think there were Marina's at Pickett/236 as well as in McLean.

This is the Safeway I started working at Nov 1975..after 41 years still with
Safeway. This is the Pickett Shopping Center across from Starlite Pool. They had several
Of these in Fairfax. One up the street in Fairfax City, Fairfax Circle and this one, "store 948". Safeway still operates one in McLean, Old Dominion Dr.

The one at Courthouse Plaza on Old Lee Highway behind the new Fairfax City Library, where a MacDonalds recently closed and the Fairfax location of Joe's Pizza was. I think that entire shopping center is going to be closed for whatever it is that Fairfax City is doing with shopping center these days -- closing them to make way for more "mixed use" crap.

The Marina style Safeway was "exposed" a few years ago at Pickett Shopping Center when the shopping center (Trader Joe's side) had the new fronts put on the stores. I think that the workers removed that curved front when they did the work.

Those aren't earbuds, or even flowers, that's a whole tree!
Cool picture, I love those old time "high-tech" gizmos that people used back in the day.

That is crazy looking. Funny as hell. Is that the Navy yard across the river behind him and he is in Anacostia?

Looks like he is on Haines Point looking south, with Fort McNair and the National War College behind him.

Over his left shoulder out of the picture (further to the right) would be Bolling AFB, and beyond the National War College would be Nats Stadium.

The picture below is dated 1913. It sits catty-corner from Town Hall and is a restaurant The building on the same side of Main, but across University from this building use to be Service Garage and a Chevy Dealership. They were working on cars in the back, behind the building and showcasing the latest model Chevy in the large corner window in the front. Next to it, on the other side and within the same building (or occupying a corner of the same building), was the post office. Anyone remember hearing any of this? It was 1946, approx., and before.

This was told to me by a local resident who was 20 years old in 1946.

If we're talking about Safeways not Safeway's marina-type structure, there is one in Fairfax Square next to ABC store. Situated between Old Lee Hwy, University, North and Layton Hall. The old Willard property.
