Can anyone map out on modern roads the exact route they took? What was with all the trolley crossings? What was that?

The Motel Washington was located where Patriot Harley is now. I remember it as a child next to the putt-putt golf course. It was old and abandoned even back then.

Thanks,,,I would love a pic of THAT Putt-Putt course. That exact abandoned course got me into mid mod and commercial history

I think I have a faint memory of the putt putt course - anyone recall when it was removed? I certainly remember that spot being a gravel lot that featured an annual fireworks stand before Harley moved in.

I would say late 60's...maybe 1970. It was abandoned when I first saw it as a very young child in 1968...just after we moved here.

Close, but not Pohick church. It's actually "Williams' Ordinary, Main Street, Dumfries, Prince William County, VA"

It's Pohick Church. This is a companion 1905 photo taken from the opposite direction. You can see the church cemetery.

Don't know about those corners (not sure they are actually chimney's - probably some ventilation) but Pohick Church's exterior has undergone a number of restorations over the years.

Looks like Route 7 (Broad Street in Falls Church) near where the W&OD bike path bridge now goes over the road.

Its a drive in dry cleaners, not Topps

Bishop Smallwood E. Williams died June 1991 at the age of 83 years old. He was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Washington, D.C. in the 1920's where he started his street ministry using a fireplug as a pulpit.

Agreed. That's West End Plaza in the background.

Did the W&OD cross Broad Street at grade level back then? You can see the high voltage lines that still parallel the tracks/trail in the photo.

Postcard courtesy of Herndon Historical Society. I wonder what year this is from? Route 7 and 28 intersect in Sterling don't they? I wonder if they are referring to what we now call old Centreville road as route 28 somehow??

Very Cool...I think it may be later than the 30's...according to this write-up it was still around in 2007. Closer to Centreville it states. Thanks! very Cool.

I think you got the right place. Built 1930. Substantial stone house. West of Fairfax. Lee Highway. 111 acre farm.

Ad was from a farm magazine I think. Picture of stone house. Lee Highway. Fairfax.

I'd say definite match. Sounds like the lady owned a lot of properties. The ad makes it sound like you would maybe reserve the building - not just a walk-in establishment. I'm gonna try to find it.

Bowman's Motor Court was more correctly located nearer to the intersection of Route 7 and Dranesville Rd in Herndon. A portion of the old edifice remains and now houses Fairfax Auto Parts per this googly link:

That building was Peacock Buick early 70s before they moved out west of Tysons. Not sure of the dealer name in the picture shown though.

I didn’t count until after I posted. I just said that. Anyway, who’s serious?

In actuality, if there is one Volkswagen out of all of the cars parked in front of the capital, you win. I give. The fact is, whenever I was looking for one in a picture and actually found one, I was surprised. That said to say, I never really disagreed with you. I was just having fun with you. The pic of Arlington JR High is definitely Swanson Jr. High school in Arlington off of Washington Blvd and Patrick Henry Drive. This picture was from the back side of the school facing east northeast. A second gymnasium, classrooms, cafeteria, and shop facilities were latter added to the building before 1970. Since then classrooms were added on the NorthEast corner of the school next to Washington Blvd. The school is located in the Westover neighborhood of Arlington.

One of the stops for the Wilson Line was Marshall Hall, an amusement park that was located where a plantation "Marshall Hall" had been before it burned down or something. The amusement park closed after some incidents -- the place wasn't integrated -- I went one time to MH but think that we drove there, in its last days early 70s or so.

It was one the Maryland side of the Potomac somewhere below Mt. Vernon (on the Virginia side).

I think some of the WL cruises had live music (remembering hearing that Elvis in his early career was a headliner???) on them and dancing.

Fran Conia, that's it.

There was a City Paper article about Elvis and the Wilson Line cruises.

Marshall Hall, apparently, lasted until 1980. It was very low rent ride-wise and places like Kings Dominion and Six Flags probably took them out.

Here's a good history of the Wilson Line. I can remember when it sunk and then towed to a sandbar on the MD side of the Wilson Bridge.

>A state trooper assisting Arlington county deputies after a jail escape in the 1960s

He has a Remington 870 12 Gauge Riot Choke Pump Shotgun..and a 6 Inch Barrel Smith Wesson .38 revolver in a Swing Holster with belt slide for 12 more cartridges. Probably a S&W Model 10. Or A K-38. 158 Grain Round Nose Lead Ammo is all they allowed..No Hollow Points..Today police would laugh at that ammo..as Elmer Fudd Ammo..! And they also had Plain Jane Cars compared to today. No AC.. AM Radio and a Luxury.. A Heater!! LOL..Big Trunk Radio.. inside the trunk and a Winchester 30-30 carbine there too..but that was for Riflemen ..Snipers that they may be up against..not Jail Escapees. The 12 Gauge was the Go Too ..in most cases.. No Frills back then ..The VSP was saving taxpayers money..Spartan..The State Police HQ's like the one on Rt 1 in Alex were Spartan too..No "I love me" on the Capt's or Lt's Walls. A Pic of the President..The Gov and the State Police Supt..The Colonel.. That's about it..

That's a great pic of the men in Gray of years bygone..The men of The Virginia State Police.. and that car would hit 120 in a heart beat..probably a 383..maybe a 440 Wedge.. Bout 1964 I would Guess. The Dodge Polara 500's were
Hot rods Too..The VSP prefered Plymouths and Dodges back then..

DAJAX And that Real Trooper Hat Back then..Was Tops..! And Those Troopers patrolled the State of Va 24/7 in every place in the state..on the darkest roads with very little back up..in counties where the back up may be 30-45 minutes away..God Bless..!!

Oh, yea. I remember that school. Kind of at the bottom of a hole over there. The school looks so much bigger in the picture.

What you are looking at is a 1964 Plymouth Belvedere 2 door. If you look closely you will see it is a "Post Car" which means it has a large steel post from the body of the car to the roof. Post Cars were very popular with the big block crowd because the post helped to control body flex/twist caused by power plants producing 400+ HP.

I am a little rusty on my Mopars from the early to mid 1960's, but that car came with engine options of the 225cid slant 6, 273/318 cid V-8's, 361/383cid, 413/426 wedge V-8 , and the world famous 426 Hemi. The Hemi was rated by Chrysler Corp. to produce 425 hp - That rating was conservative in an attempt to keep the insurance rates for those who bought one down as much as possible.

Seeing this Virginia State Police car as a 2 door post car with full VSP markings suggests it is a pursuit car, and may very well could have been equipped with the 413 0r 426 wedge engines.

Many were also made after that...prior to the introduction of "Chrome" cards. Both shown above were late 40's/early 50's. Love 'em

I have memories of Marshall Hall and that we took the boat there. We may have driven there too at other times. In elementary school we had a class trip that went on a cruise ship on the Potomac, but I don’t have any memory of it docking at Marshall Hall. It may have just been a cruise. There was music and a dance floor midship. We would run through there, dance a little and run out again. It always seemed empty when we passed through. There were rails all around the boat on two or three levels and we could go any where we wanted. So we did. We just kept moving. I mostly just remember the empty dance floor and the red trim paint covered a lot of area. I remember red.

Actually, the car is a 1963 Plymouth. The pillar between the back door window, and the rear window was more angled in '64.
For the State Police, it probably had either the 361 or 383 engine. With the right gearing, it could probably do 130MPH.
The 426 Wedge was available, but usually only for drag racers. The Hemi didn't come out for street use until 1966 (Nascar and drag racers in 1964).
.
Thanks for another great picture, all these things are making me fill up the hard-drive on my computer.

It's as phelpsmarc said, a good part of the drive is along Rt. 123.
Mile 5.9 - After crossing Chain Bridge (coming from DC) it tells you to go right up the hill (Rt.123/Chain Bridge Rd.), if you go left, it goes up Glebe Rd.
Mile 8.4 - Langley, bear left, if you bear right, it's Rt. 193.
Mile 9.9 - McLean, cross trolley (today's Old Dominion Dr.), this isn't on Dolley Madison Blvd, that wasn't there yet, it's all Chain Bridge Rd.
Mile 15.7 - In Vienna, (see the map), it says to cross the trolley, that one is actually the W&OD Railroad. But an electric trolley does parallel Rt. 123 the rest of the way into Fairfax.
Mile 21.0 - There was no Arlington/Fairfax Blvd yet, so you had to go all the way to Little River Turnpike, then turn right, and the courthouse would be on your immediate left side.
Follow that to Kamp Washington, (Mile 22.1) and bear left. Follow that out to Centreville, and beyond.
Mile 33.9 - Crossroads, turn left on Rt. 234 & The Henry House is at the top of the hill on your left (Henry House Hill).
.
Note - Mile 32.5 - It looks like The Old Stone Bridge was still in use at the time.
ps. the map is a USGS map dated 1915, so it is the exact time for the story, unfortunately, I don't have anything either east or west of what is shown. (But I did crop out north and south so the file wasn't too big.)

Did anyone notice the painted wooden sign for the "Centreville Restaurant" is spelled correctly, but the elevated more permanent "Centerville Restaurant" is not?
It reminds me, about 20 years ago, a sign that the people of Annandale had made to welcome people to the community. The sign was made, put up, but apparently still covered up before a "grand unveiling". Comes time for the ceremony, they unveiled the sign and everybody cheered, until somebody noticed that the sign said "Welcome To Annadale". They were missing an "N". Nobody checked the spelling beforehand. Oops.

It is curious that they would route you by way of Chain Bridge. There was a crossing at 14th Street and there was one from Georgetown to Rosslyn (not sure whether it was Key Bridge or the earlier Aqueduct Bridge), both of which would have had direct road connections that could get you to Fairfax.

Cool, I didn't know Monkey Wards had restaurant's too. The one at 7 Corners didn't.
But at that one, I thought it was cool that you could park on the roof, and then take an escalator down into the store.

My girlfriend worked at the Wards at Seven Corners in the late 70's. They did have a restaurant there. It was over by the appliance and tool dept. That rooftop parking was suppose to be for employee parking. That's why the ramp was kind of hidden and not well marked. Customers still found their way up there.

I honestly don't remember a restaurant there, at least not in the early to mid '70's. Obviously you could smell one when you walked into a store, and I don't remember that there. Maybe they installed one later on?
And if the rooftop was for employees only, they didn't have a sign indicating that, or my Mother never would have dreamed of driving up there. Again, that may have been something that they did later on.
We didn't really go there much after 1975 or so, mainly because there were a lot more options of stores that were opening up then. Memco, Zayre's, Best and others.

I don't remember the roof being for employees also. We parked there all the time. Also don't remember the restaurant...I remember the auto service area being over by the tools and appliance section. I do remember Korvette's had a restaurant area in the lower level.

Thanks Sleepy, I was starting to question my memories. It's always nice to get a backup.
Plus, the ramp to the roof wasn't hidden, it was right there by the back parking lot.

I foresee that post as inspiring someone else on this forum. They are obsessed with a certain fish and chips chain that is no longer in this area, (without naming names to jinx us).

Trust me, I guarantee they had a restaurant there, at least they did in 77-79. We ate there many times. The rooftop parking wasn't employee only parking, but if you worked there they told you to park up there. You would come down the escalator, then down the stairs and the time clock and office and stuff were downstairs. They didn't have signage for additional customer parking at the ramp. If a customer parked up there it's not like they were going to kick them out.

The ad for the "Buffeteria" doesn't mention an address. I'm sure some stores had them, but that doesn't mean that all of them did. But again, maybe it was something that was added to the 7 Corners location in later years, to try to help lagging sales.

I'm just saying, that between 77-79, I ate many a meal at the Wards at Seven Corners while my girlfriend was on her break. You can bet as a young guy just out of high school, the last place I wanted to be was eating at Wards. I had so much more to do, but you know you did what made the girlfriend happy. I also remember many nights parked upstairs, listening to the radio waiting for her to get off work.

I think someone took pictures from this forum and made a youtube out of them. It's pretty cool.

DH, Where exactly was it in Wards? I'm drawing a blank. I definitely trust your memory.

Funny Fran, my buddy had a Maverick when I was in HS. What color? His was Dark Green.

Hey Sleepy, the best way I can explain it is, it had railings separating it from the rest of the store. On the other side of the back wall was the auto center. On one of the sides across the aisle was the appliance dept., another side, across the aisle was the tool/hardware dept., and the 3rd. side was the outdoor and catalog sales dept. with the aisle that lead into the auto center.

I grew up in Arlington in the 60's and 70's and I cannot remember a time that the Wards at 7 Corners did NOT have a eating area. It wasn't too large an area and it was over near the auto center on the east side of the store.

I liked the vacuum display where they had the beach ball twirling about 10 ft high between the candy counter and the restaurant. I also liked Christmas when they would set up displays of all the trains and slot cars (probably pre 1973) which I loved to look at. We always went through the shoe department looking for coins that fell out of pockets in the chairs. Always good for about 25 cents or more.

The ramp to the roof was in the back parking lot and you had to drive all the way to the back of the parking lot to the fence, and make a left turn into the drive up to the roof. A bridge over the parking lot approximately over the shoe dept. that took you to the roof. You may have driven under the bridge to get to the back parking lot if you came from the west side of the store.

The parking lot in front of the store to the west used to house the carnival every year before they built all the stores that are now in that area.

Many memories of that store as my cousin and several good friends used to work there prior to 1979.

The K-Mart in Chantilly had a food service area. Never ate there though. They are currently remodeling the old K-Mart. Not sure what is going in there.
