Now that you mention it, it did become a tire store for a few years afterward. I do remember seeing racks of tires out front to help advertise.
I'll take your word on the mattress store, I didn't drive that section for a few years.

Tire store is next door and is still there. You can see the bay's in the picture.

True, I see that.
I guess that since I never went to either place, only drove past, they all kind of blended into one, as I was looking where I was driving. Haha.

I saw a couple of those old deco styled service stations up in rural Pennsylvania earlier this summer. Another great picture!

Hello everyone. I really don't like this forum but this particular thread is very nice. A friend of mine sent me this picture and says its a old picture of Kamp Washington but I told her I don't think so. Can anybody here identify it? Thank you and God bless.

This is reportedly Summer camp at Fairfax Brewster. I guess they had some VW's too.

Does anyone remember the 6 month state inspections? That van needed to be inspected in June. They were dark green or yellow, and you could transfer them very easily by soaking them with glass cleaner. Peal off and re-stick to your buddies car.

It is Kamp Washington looking southward.

One of the building is that of Crescent Radio and Television.

I remember the 6 month inspections. I was an inspector at a tire store and you had to get your car inspected every 6 months. Didn't really seem like a big deal then, nobody complained. I look back now and think, what a pain in the butt that was. Today, even a year seems too often. Yeah, just put a wet rag on the sticker for a couple of minutes and it would peel right off and when you put it on another vehicle, you couldn't even tell it has been moved.

I used to hate those 6 month inspections. When my Dad's 75 Buick was up for inspection I would scrape the sticker off and spray the inside of the windshield with pam cooking spray then after getting it inspected the sticker would slip right off so I could put it on my beater Ford. Then I would clean Dad's windshield and take it to a different gas station to get another sticker.

I belief that Merrifield building was Performance Discount Tires in the late 70s.

American Star was located in an industrial park next to the bowling alley at Guinea and Zion Dr. as of 5-10 years ago.

Sambos next to the Fairfax Theatre had its name changed to The Jolly Tiger after many complaints and later was sold to Denny's.

Wow, I had forgotten about that place. I was not yet drinking age and wouldn't have gone in there.

Pershing Parket is on the left, and the Cleaners is on the right. You can see the double doors to the Pershing Market on the left.

This was our go-to shopping center when I was growing up.

BTW: The Post Office had some LONG lines. I can picture waiting in line there.

I remember turning in my Selective Service Card there.

I drove by recently and there is again a Food Store in the old A&P space.

The Bottom Dollar left a few years ago and it was vacant for awhile.

Other businesses that were once there:

Photo Com (or Photo Mat)

Bud Ferrin's Woodlawn Hardware

Carlson's Ice Cream

McCrory's (took the place of Peopele's Drug from '76-'82)

A Barber Shop (Can't recall the name)

Frank's Hideaway (dive bar underground) - ran under the Hi-Gear and Photo Com (Mat).

Looks like the late 1960's? or early 1970's?

I see what looks to me as the front of a 66 Chevelle behind the Chief with the pipe standing on the left.

The truck they are on is a Chevy C-50 and that cab style was made between 1967 and 1972.

Talk about timing ....

A Chevy truck commercial on the Cubs/Dodgers game a few minutes ago showed clips of their trucks from the past 50-60 years.

Another clue to the date is the McKay sign on the truck door that says "The Little Profit Dealer."

"Little Profit" was a genie character licensed by a Baltimore ad agency and used by car dealers nationwide in the late 1960s & early 70s. It was first licensed in 1967 and used most widely in the early 70s. Dealers who used the Little Profit logo usually sold trinkets with the Little Profit genie too -- it was popular for a while and was a great idea in dealership marketing. I think by the mid-1970s it had basically run its course.

This pic almost looks like a 4th of July Parade. That was the A&P that was almost across the street from the then Fairfax High School.

Jim McKay probably loaned out that stake body truck to be used in the parade.

1972 was the last year for the black tag/ white tag switch. The 1973 tags started the white tags with blue letters and numbers, and the decal purchase for each year.

Wow, that bring back memories. My dad performed the Heimlich maneuver on a woman that was choking on a piece of steak there. They were at the table across from our both and everyone at their table was too shocked to take action. My dad finally got up, lifted her out of her chair, a couple of tries and she spit out the steak. The manager comp'd my parents drinks that night! Good times.....

Correct, I forgot DH had mentioned it a few years ago. Matchcover found on the web. There was also a Peoples Drug in Willston for years, and a Men's Clothing Store...bought a few suits at that location after they moved from Loehmann's.

Speaking of Weenie Beenie I swear there was another Weenie Beenie in Annandale on John marr drive in Annandale across the street from Kmart. Does anyone else remember that?

Fran, I've read that before but can't place it...near the Post Office or farther up? Wikapedia says they had 6 BW locations a one time, so I'm sure you're correct.

I went to the Weenie Beenie on RT 1 in the Delray section of Alexandria across from the RF&P Yard. It closed and was converted into a Marinos Pizza carryout in the mid 1980's.

I remember that pool hall..."The Cue" IIRC ??? Small doorway with lighted sign of billiards rack above it....Wide stairs that lead down under shopping center...place was huge...tables named after states...rent racks by the hour...line of pinball machines & foozball tables on left wall

It looks like the very last car that you can see on the right side, is the back-end of a Beetle. Just the bumper, tailpipe, and bit of the back of the car.

I've tried to figure out where this was also, and can't seem to place it.
It looks like the place across the street rents canoes, but where around Kamp Washington is a place close enough to go canoeing?
I think it's somewhere else.

It looks like the houses are on 236 ends right before it intersects with 29 and 50, the curved road is turning onto east bound 29. None of the landscaping exists anymore with the roads being widened over the years.

I do remember the location of this photo. The person who took the photo had their back to that old gas station that became the Penguin Feather Head Shop, and the Mister Donut.

That canoe store was much like camping store, and back in the 1970's there were still places to go in Fairfax County. See the old Ryder Rental Trailers?

The house in middle is the Crescent TV and Radio repair shop. The third white house furthest away had a soft served ice cream stand on the other side. It was called Goldies.

All of this was demolished in the very early 1980's, and a store call Best & Co. was built there.

Looking at the image from 1972 on the Historic Imagery Viewer, I see it now, with the intersection just out of sight on the the right side.
OK, I stand corrected.

nah, where’d he get the clean shirt? Maybe going TO Woodstock, but I think that looks like Route 7 with the driver heading eastbound. Not sure about the car. Sleepy probably knows.

Can't be 1941; the cars and aircraft are from much later.

I do remember going out on the observation deck in the foreground when I was a kid in the early 1960's. If you look closely you can see some basketball-sized objects mounted on pedestals on the deck. Some of them were coin operated binoculars for viewing the runways, while others were coin operated speakers so you could listen in on the air traffic control conversations between the pilots and the control tower.

I had totally forgotten about that until I saw the photo. Thanks for posting!

I lifted this off my FB page to post here. This is a great photo of Camp Washington at the intersection of 50 and 236. Weber Tire is in the back ground, upper right and the field on the left is ate up with stores and a Honda dealership now. Though not mine it is a cool photo and it deserves to be in this thread.

It wasn't a fire at Skyline.

It was a collapse when the building was being built, the workers removed some forms too early before the concrete had cured enough to support the work going on above it. Several workers were killed.

This photograph depicts a trolley conductor standing on the observation deck of one of the trolleys owned by the Washington, Alexandria, and Mount Vernon Electric Railway. Standing close to him is a man wearing a suit and hat, presumably one of the trolley passengers.

I recognize that bridge on the GW Parkway. It was across from Stratford Landing neighborhood. It might still be there. I ran over it probably 500 times as we used the GW Parkway Bike Trail for Cross Country Practice. So did Ft. Hunt High School - they were a much better team than us.

From another site, it comes up as: "10726 Lee Highway - Old Coach Restaurant (66-67)"

That would be the shopping center across the street from Paul VI school.
