Here's a 1930s aerial view of the Washington Airport / Hoover field. Evidently the two airports were separate operations until they finally merged in the early 1930s. Wikipedia has more information on the two fields and how they operated with major safety issues including a road (Military Road) that bisected the runways. Even in the 30s, Military Road must have had a lot of traffic because Arlington County officials fought the Federal Government for several years to keep the road open.

Several interesting things in the photo:

1) Look how close the terminal building is to the 14th Street bridge (then called the "Highway" bridge).

2) To the left of the air terminal, notice the huge swimming pool and beach area near what today we call the Boundary Channel Yacht Basin. Was this the "Arlington Beach" that has been mentioned previously on this site?

3) Does anyone know what the tall and irregularly-shaped building is behind the air terminal (in the parking lot)?

4) Photo was taken before Shirley Highway (now I-395) was built. The caption on the photo identifies the intersection as "Mt. Vernon Blvd - So End Highway Bridge" so this was probably before the GW Parkway was named.

5) The road to the right of the terminal is most likely Jeff Davis Hwy (Rt. 1).

6) The road in front of the swimming pool is probably Military Road? Guessing this because it does look like it would cross the runway.

Ha-ha, I believe it was Sleepy Hoola that mentioned something about his dad's Air Force buddies driving around with hot stewardesses when he was a youngin.

My ol man came back from the Nam in the early 70's after flying recce missions over the north and while he already had a wife and a houseful of kids I could tell even though i myself was a youngster in my early teens that he might have grown a few wild hairs over there.

Driving around Annandale with 4 brats and a nag wasn't the same as getting his ass shot at daily at 1000 mph and then coming back to the bar and slamming whiskey till the wee hours with his squadron mates (the ones that made it back), and a few R&R's to the Thailand massage parlors.

So while he wasnt the one with the stews under his arm Im sure he was pretty close to making a jump.

Took a while for the old boy to adjust, wasn't uncommon to have a whiskey drink in his hand while taking us to saturday morning baseball games and the like, when he saw a cop he'd hand it over and say "slide that under the seat'

And I certainly remember some of his younger guys that he'd car pool to the pentagon with, and they were over for the weekened cookouts-they were wild men as if they were living on borrowed time

No pictures but a snapshot of living in NOVA back in the 70's when it seemed every 2 out 3 houses had a military family in it

“Lock the doors” I remember my mother would say, when we traveled through a “seedy” neighborhood. Capital Hill area was another and Anacostia. We use to live in PG County before moving to Arlington. Our doctors were all in town (DC). My grandmother would take the bus to Hecht’s in town to shop. Actually, my parents were raised in DC. I suppose we were part of the mass-exit. Exit out of DC and then PG.

The large building in the photo of the Washington-Hoover airport was a hangar that housed the Goodyear blimp.

This blimp was transferred to the United States Navy in 1942 to be used for training.

The number was changed to L-5 and named Enterprise. Fate unknown -

That building at the fork has always fascinated me. I wish I could see the face of it coming from across the river. I think the double-high exterior is for signage /advertising/ neons? and maybe its a a bar or diner or both.

That water hole behind the pool looks more like a mud slick than a beach but I wonder if it overflowed into the pool when it rained a lot. Which “shore” was the beach/amusement park back- back- back-in-the-day?

Open the site and put the grid number you want in the search box like 81-3 Or just zoom it..At the bottom of the page there a blue ico with some stacked pappers on it..Click on that, it will show all the years available from 1937..53..then 97 and later. They will all be checked..click off all you don't want to see and select if you want the street names, grid lines ect at the top. It will go to the year you want..Thats the simple gist of it..Theres a "swipe Tool" that allows you to see layers of the different years..I have not used it..Its good enough to just takle a look at how the county was.. In 1937 Fairfax Circle was not there..because Rt 50 east was not there..In 1953 the Circle was a circle with Rt 50 built eastward ..Its pretty cool the site and I wish they ahd some more years in there

You can also click the blue ICON layers list (is what it is.).and select a year..then select 1 more and see the other one..then click off one..and go back and forth looking at the differences..clicking one or the other on and off

DAJAX That's all in a Nutshell..There more to it..

There are a couple of pictures of Arlington Beach here http://ghostsofdc.org/2012/11/08/arlington-beach/

It was located on the Virginia side of the Potomac river just north of where I-395 enters Virginia today. I believe the pool visible in the Hoover field picture Kingsarms posted, and was part of that facility. Lady Bird Johnson "island" which the GW Parkway runs through north of 395 was largely built from material dredged from the river in the early 1900s. The original river bank would have been where Arlington Beach was.

Ditto on the cars. The white one really stands out to me.

Another thing I noticed in the photo are all of the tall smokestacks in the background. I count 5 relatively close and perhaps a 6th one more distant. At first I was thinking maybe the Georgetown waterfront but the hills on the horizon don't really fit with that location. The hills look more like SE Washington - so maybe the stacks are in or near the Navy yard?

Regular buildings often had huge smokestacks back then because they were heated with coal. They would try to keep those nasty coal fumes away.

Was this motel out at the corner of RT 29 / 211 and Shirley Gate Rd? I think the old house became the office of a company that sold plants and flowers.

The motel was there before Shirley Gate Rd I think.

I found two more aerial photos of the Virginia side of the 14th Street Bridge. These appear to have been taken around 1954/1955 - so roughly 20 years after the Hoover Field aerial.

Lot of changes during that 20 year span:

1) Pentagon construction completed - River Entrance and South Parking Lot can be seen in the first photo

2) Shirley Highway in place

3) Second vehicle bridge now in place at the 14th street crossing

4) Airport operations relocated to the nearby National Airport site

5) The large swimming pool and beach area are gone and the Columbia Island Marina is in place

6) At the approximate site of the old airport terminal, a new Hot Shoppe Restaurant and Drive In have been constructed.

7) At the bottom of both photos (near the railroad tracks) is the site that would become the Twin Bridges Marriott - the company's first "motor hotel". The Twin Bridges Marriott opened in 1957

In the bottom photo of this group, look at all the ramps leading to and from the restaurant. Now that’s doing things right! Zip in and fly out on any “super highway” - one for every direction.

Damn! I’m like a dog with a bone with these pictures.

There is a good picture of that place somewhere in this thread. It was like a store that had 4 or 5 rooms for rent out back.

Imagine how that neon A&W sign on top of the restaurant must have looked all lite up at night. It’s humongous.

OK, it is not Fairfax County (Washington DC) but I am looking for a good guess as to what year this was taken… I am not an auto expert.

ca. 1950. Some cars seem to show signs of the new style that came out in 1949 while others appear older. Then again I am not a car guy.

I put this picture in the late 1940's

I notice 2 things in this picture. First is all of the cars have 2 piece windshields, and there are no VWs.

I believe the 3rd in the 3rd row is a 1950 Buick and the 5th in 1st row is a 1950 Chevrolet. 1950 they still had split WS.

Looks like Chevy's first year for the 1 piece windshield was 1953.

I believe they were still there when I moved here in the mid 80's. They had the same setup behind Captain Pell's when it was on Lee Hwy near Cedar Lane.

Not as many people could afford new cars then. Any way..paint and chrome did not last then as It does today..by the time a car was 7 years old..It looked..Like a Heap..I can remember how chrome would peel on the bumpers. And 100000 miles on a car was a magic number of miles. High Mileage at the time ready for a rebuild all the way.Or Junk it.!

It's where they locked up people who drove foreign cars. In the lot? None obviously. :)

You sound like Fox News and/or Joke Insurance.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t very long ago when the Town of Fairfax became a city. In any case, Fairfax was likely just Fairfax - all encompassing - the town and the outskirts.

I would assume that's the kind of lot where you would leave your keys with an attendant, so they could move the cars as needed. Still if you way in the back I'm sure it would take a while to move the other cars out of the way to get to yours.

I am not sure why you made the snarky comment, nevertheless you are entitled to your thoughts.

I was focusing on the old motels within the city limits as they were in a more concentrated area, and many have been gone for 25+ years.

Fairfax City changed it's name in 1874 from Providence, and the town was incorporated in 1961.

I'm sure in most cases they used Fairfax as a general term...the "Circle" if it indeed was, and County was used quite a lot in Alexandria cards.

Just a little clarification.

The name "Fairfax" was originally applied to what is today the town of Culpeper. Must have been confusing having a town of Fairfax that was not located in the County of Fairfax, but both counties were part of the Fairfax land grants. When a post office was established there, the PO was named Culpeper Court House, and the state renamed the town Culpeper around the time of the Civil War. What is today Fairfax City started out as Providence in the early 19th century and referred to the area around the Court House. By the Civil War the area had been renamed Fairfax Court House, at least unofficially, and it became the town of Fairfax after the Civil War. The boundaries of the town of Fairfax expanded later with the current boundaries roughly following the town boundaries as established in the 1950s.

I doubt that advertisers would have obsessed about whether a particular motel was actually within the town boundaries, or was slightly north along what is today Fairfax Blvd. Kamp Washington had a separate identity for some time as did Jermantown.

Maybe so..I don't know about that one in the pic..but FXCO has always had a number of US State Dept people and US Military and many of these people brought the small foreign cars back to NOVA..

In the 50, 60's and 70's FXCO/NOVA had as many foreign cars per population as California which had a lot of foreign cars.. Later mid 70's on they became popular all over the USA..

Come to Ohio. You frequently have Foo, Foo County, Foo City and Foo Township, with no two connected to each other. For example, Montgomery is in Hamilton County, which is an hour's drive from Montgomery County. Similar distance between Union and Union City.

Took me a few years to adjust to this.

I don't think it is that warehouse, however. Both the drawing you posted and the tiny picture at https://www.loc.gov/item/93510824/ show different masonry on the first floor. The parking lot building is smooth brick

They kinda already are. The homes were built in 1967. They were model homes for a new Levitt Homes community being built in Springfield. None of those models actually exist in the Greenbriar community. Also, I have heard the stop lights at the next intersection, Majestic Lane, were the last stoplights/signs on Rt. 50 till you got out to Middleburg until sometime in the '70's.

Not a clue, but I found this for you:
Bethlehem Baptist Church, which began in 1863, started a school for African-American children two years later. At first, the church hosted the classes, but in 1867, local men built a permanent structure using materials donated by the Freedman’s Bureau. Gum Springs was located on land donated by Jane Ford Rogers just south of the intersection of Sherwood Hall Lane and Route One. In the 1930s, the county sold the schoolhouse and opened a new one on Route One, immediately south of Sherwood Hall Lane. The old building became the Open House Café, a tavern owned and operated by Tony Williams from 1947 to 1953. The site later hosted Ernie’s Crab House for years. The school closed in 1953 upon the opening of Drew-Smith School, a segregated facility. Drew-Smith closed in 1964 when the school system integrated and the building has since been incorporated into the Gum Springs Community Center. The Gum Springs Historical Society is collocated with the Community Center.

Everything I know, I learned from here, today:

Hello! I am still hoping to see some pictures of Pants Corral, especially the one in Fair city mall in the 70s. All I have to remember the Pants Corral by is this one video

I have been catching up on this thread as I had not looked at it in a year or two. Thank you all very much for contributing all this wonderful content. I grew up in Danbury forest just off Braddock road and these memories and pictures are just fantastic!

Article from 1915 Washington Post about a road trip from Washington, DC to the Manassas, Virginia battlefields. Photo from the story entitled: "1916 National touring car on road between Centreville and Fairfax."

Loved the description of the roads and driving... "The last thirteen miles, as stated before, is exceedingly rough and is not pleasant riding..." If you are driving during rush hour 112 years later the riding remains the same.

Some interesting notes:
18.6 Tollgate 25c (Toll road in 1915)
29.4 Ford (over Big Rocky Run)
30.2 Cross iron bridge (over Cub Run)
34.0 Cross wooden bridge (over Young's Creek)
