The Merrifield Jack in the Box became a Taco Bell which was torn down to create the Mosaic experience.

The Annandale location became a Popeye's very close to Pep Boy's and The Old Spaghetti Mill on Little River TNPK.

Do you rink it's possible to follow/trek the old alignment?

I know there is a thread/discussion on Jack In The Box elsewhere, but since it was just brought up here...do you think it could make a "comeback" here on the East coast?

I've recently experienced them from St. Louis westward...very common in California, even have locations in Hawaii.

They seem to be going great guns out west, the last I remember them here in NoVa was the late 70's...

Time for a comeback here on the east coast?

Anybody know the story with Jack in the Box's "demise" here, and "resurgence" out west?

I found two more photos of the Washington & Old Dominion's East Falls Church operations. Both were taken in February, 1968 and show a W&OD locomotive pulling freight cars across Lee Highway heading west towards Vienna. In the locomotive picture, you can see the large sign for Snyder's Hardware in the background.

In the second photo, you can see the old East Falls Church Station already boarded up and looking abandoned. The street sign for Lee Hwy and Fairfax Drive is also visible. Also in that photo, notice that high tension power line is already in place.

It's hard to tell from these photos, but I don't think I66 had been built yet.

I remember watching A Current Affair a lot as a kid (mid/late 1980s). They had this long-running story about people getting sick at Jack in the Box. I don't know the background (and I don't really care), but that probably helped with its demise if I can remember it from that long ago.

Here's one more photo of the East Falls Church Station, once again looking west. This picture looks to be perhaps from 1965 or 1966. The station has not yet been boarded up and you can see the high tension power poles have been installed but the wires themselves have not been strung.

Last one for tonight. This photo shows the East Falls Church rail yard looking east towards Arlington. Also probably from 1965 or 1966. You can see the EFC station in the distance on the right. On the left foreground is the old Murphy and Ames lumber yard and the Snyder Hardware building behind it in the background.

Well I guess, it was along Burke Rd, I was told Dog Tags from a soldier during the war of 1812 and a revolver where found when some work was being done near the old station and Firehouse. Parts of Sideburn road after crossing the tracks where still there, but I haven't been there since the late 80's. You might be able to walk that from the tracks to Premier Court. https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3880.rr003100/

Here's a picture taken of the other side of the house. Another one from my local history picture book.
I had flipped through the book trying to identify the house, but since the picture was taken of the other side, I didn't make the connection.

I think you folks are correct. Forget the "inside the beltway" pic. From Blake Lane heading toward Falls Church looks to be the place.
Thanks for helping to identify it.

It is basically what DAJAX said, over-expansion AND then when they planned on more East Coast locations, one of the first big high profile E-COLI case in ID, NV, Wash, CA and killed 4 children and over 700 people infected in 1993. It was the reason everybody went to med-well done burgers for people...well for children

Another "Then and Now".
The Andrew Chapel School on Leesburg Pike between Tyson's Corner and the Colvin Run Mill. Built in 1914.
Now the headquarters of a construction company.

I drove by that building for years David. Never realized it started out as a school.

@Kingsarms-The East Falls Church photo in your 3/6 @ 10:48 post on this page shows fuel oil tanks on the right side of the tracks. I believe these were part of a coal and oil dealership located just west of the station. As of about five years ago some remnants of what looks like the coal pier and bunkers were still there. There also used to be the remnants of another one in Alexandria in the parking lot of a building at the corner of Duke and Henry Street.

I used to work out that way years ago also, and always thought the building looked out of place for all the others around it. I didn't realize it was as old as it was, or the history of it either.
For the fuel oil tanks in the Falls Church Depot picture, here is another aerial photo of the place, taken April 1st, 1963 (no fooling).

Great aerial photo. David. In the top right, you can see the former East Falls Church commercial district that was sacrificed for the I-66 construction project. I was very young when they tore down those stores so my memories of them are pretty vague.

Here's a 1963 aerial view that I annotated to point out some of the other landmarks and to show wide the I-66 right of way (hash marks) wound up being.

Here's a closer view that I found online that shows the East Falls Church businesses that were taken via eminent domain for I-66 (hash marked area). I think one of them was a drug store with a soda fountain, but I don't remember the others. I don't have a year/date for this photo, but the cars look to be late 1940s / early 1950s.

Also, just a guess, but I wonder if the white building with the gabled roof and big awning might be the original building for Synder's hardware? Does anybody recognize the other properties?

I wonder who owned the land to the east of the East Falls Church business district since that land didn't get taken for I-66 -- so it could be developed once the road went in.

I guess bulldozing the existing building was easier than clearing the land.

The land along the I-66 sat vacant for a long time before the road was built inside the Beltway while Arlington fought its building. It didn't open until the early 80s.

Sha Ron - while it may be true that an occasional pic from this thread gets posted without credit, the VAST majority of these pics, especially from users "Sleepy Holla" and "Fran Conia" were taken directly from Facebook nostalgia groups and posted here, sometimes right afterwards, with ZERO credit to the person or group.

Dozens of photos I've found and posted in Facebook groups have been shared in this thread, and nearly all without any indication of where they were harvested.

For the most part, you have it completely backwards. It's the users on Fairfax Underground who are doing what you are accusing others of doing.

Cathy Taylor, in Chapter 3 (Evolving Trails and Rails, pp. 47-62) of her book "Historic Falls Church", does a great job of tracing the history of the W&OD railroad and its' impact on the town.

For anyone interested in learning more about the railroad, you can view/read a preview copy her book on Google Books at:

https://books.google.com/books?id=bqOmrL8aCRAC&pg=PA54&f=false#v=onepage&q&f=false

Thankfully, the preview copy includes all of Chapter 3.

Don't lose sleep over it. This isn't a peer reviewed journal. Some of what has been posted here is old enough that in some form it is already public domain. Other items come from defunct newspapers or from yearbooks. Others are snapshots that were taken and disseminated for noncommercial purposes. You'd have to be petty to want credit for simply being the first to post it on a readily available non-commercial website. If he was claiming the items were copyrighted materials on a commercial website, that would be different.

If it's from a source that has copyrights stated (like DC PHOTOGRAPHER) credit would be given. Many have come from won (or bid and lost) auctions or my mag/book/postcard/matchbook collection...over 1000 pieces. Stuff like that from some dude who doesn't give a crap about this areas history...torques me. Also, I don't do social media.

I should also point out, that since most of these pictures are very old, taken decades ago, if not more, how many pictures from any history group are from the original photographer?
So, I stand by Sleepy Holla.

Add me to the club, no Facebook here and never will.

This is an old argument that pops up from time to time. Pics from here can show up on Facebook. Pics from Facebook can show up here. So what, we're all just interested in the history.

Another Then and Now picture.
Sir Roger de Coverley asked me to post this.
This is a Fairfax History page, so here is a home from someone in the Fairfax family that still stands today.
I was originally thinking this one might be what turned out to be Ossian Hall, but I couldn't make it fit with the posted picture.
In the modern image, the Dulles Toll Road is just to the top of the picture, and Rt. 7 is to the right. This is in what is now beautiful downtown Tyson's Corner.

Sleepy Holla, I thought I was the only one with a postcard collection like that.

Started off as Rt 1 in Alexandria, has since expanded to rt 1 all the way to NC, Rt 11 (all of Va) rt 29, all of Va, etc...mostly old hotels and the like. some old tourist brochures.

Now also do old DC restaurants.

I've never counted them, but fill up ten 2 inch binders plus several shoeboxes...

You are probably the one that I compete with on dBay...LOL...

VERY COOL! I started w/ Fairfax Circle (I lived on Blake Ln after college and would to to HO JO'S and Bob's/Tasty Diner after the bars)..so I collected those first then Falls Church/Fairfax/Vienna/RT 1 Restaurant-Motels etc. I also have had over 500 menus (down to around 125 now) because I have been in the Biz all my life. I also paint roadside from the past...diners-motels-gas stations, as my degree is in ART. I am also into the Tiki/Polynesian craze that happened from the late 40's to early 70's....and also have collected jukeboxes-coke machines-comics-radios...old cars...shit you name it.

Sleepy,

Down Rt 11, just past Staunton, there is an old motel sign barely visible from the weeds "Douglas Arms" motel...basically, a few cabins still exist, as does the sign. (or did as of 2015, last time I was down that way)

I've never seen a postcard of it, but I did see a painting of it on google-was that you?

You miss the point - you're thanking them for OTHERS' work and efforts. All they're doing is grabbing content that other people spent time to locate and post. And the fact that they choose to post without credit is dishonest.

Thank you, "Thank You". I appreciate the appreciation.
Since, I've grown up around here, I do kind of think of this area as my home, no matter how much it has changed.
Since I got my first camera, I have taken many pictures of the things around me.
Some of the pictures that I have posted were taken by people long before any of us were born, so neither I, nor anyone else here on this board, or any other, can take credit for them. Some of those people I have known in the past, but are unfortunately, now long dead.
But some of the pictures that I have posted, I have taken myself, holding the camera in both of my hands, and pressing the little button that makes the camera go "click".
But, I digress......

Another image Sleepy Holla posted that actually was posted on Facebook by someone I know. That person actually put the captions on the picture.

This is just scratching the surface, folks. So this statement is complete bullshit:

"Hey asshole, I have never been on Facebook EVER in my damn life. I have been collecting for years (25+) and been buying/selling on eBay since 1998. Don't ever accuse me of something when you have jackshit for proof. I have been posting on this thread since the beginning. Take your little Facebook theory and shove 'em"

Well, you asked for it. Are you sure you want to dance?

Who actually cares? Many people on this post have been very cordial and we share what we have or may scour to share with others who only use the Deplorable Page, and this is the only Sane Contribution to Fairfax County on this site. I for one Love History and in some way I Google to look for other pics that are out in cyberspace relating to ones that get shared here. I really don't care about Credit and just like the nostalgia. I also tend to stay away from Movie and Record people who like to Dictate what is being presented at a given time. I do not care about captions, they are Memories from the OP, so I suggest anyone in the future watermark your photos if your the OP of the pic, Other than that either post and contribute or Ignore it. I have found that any post usually brings out Thoughts, Memories or other side bar conversations to supplement the picture. Just because Sleepy, FC or any other poster doesn't mean I am giving them credit for holding onto it for so long, but sharing it with the rest of us to help stir up the Brain Cells with stories and others memories. and now to bitch after 72 pages and 600,000 views, either your late to the party or are pissed off since you cannot find new material to share with this group, I for one don't know all the historical sites and FB Pages out there, but after your first Burp I found a few more that I did not know existed by using google and clicking images.

Thanks Ronie! You have a fantastic page on facebook. It seems that most pictures posted on facebook will come up in a google image search with related keywords. I think that once that happens those pictures are public domain are they not?

No. Just because something comes up in Google doesn't mean that it's 'public domain.'

Yes it does. That's pretty much the definition.

That cannot be the correct date on that photo. The tower was completed in 1930.

I just heard about this thread from FB and I love it!

Here is a pic of the Giant food shopping center in Springfield Virginia from 1974! Kids used to play in the woods next door and we had a blast!
Thanks for the memories!

The actual dedication was on Feb 22, 1932 - George Washington's 200 Birthday.

This info is from my actual memory bank -

Wonder why it is stamped 1939? Maybe the date a library or something took possession of the photo?

The date I put on the Alexandria aerial picture came from its card file at the Library of Virginia, Online Catalog. Clearly a mistake.

Info from Image Card File

Title: [Alexandria, close to the nation’s capital, is a place of interest to the historically-minded tourist] [picture].

Hey Sleepy, my parents loved the Country Squire too. They used to have a very nice Sunday brunch. When we had relatives visiting we would often go there for the brunch.

I got my very first troll doll at that Kresge. The Super Giant sold everything, including clothes--there was no mall nearby. And the field was where the carnival set up every year. Thanks for posting!

Those images on Pinterest and especially the one you grabbed from Nesbitt Realty ALL came from the local Facebook nostalgia groups. If you are looking at something from Nan Lozito Rosenburg's Pinterest page or Nesbitt Realty, where Aletha Golas has raided Facebook nostalgia groups and intentionally posted images on a commercial site without acknowledgement, you haven't found anything new.

It takes zero effort to raid another raider's spoils. Find something original, never shared here, on Facebook, or on Pinterest. Then you deserve a pat on the back.

I have been posting on here since the beginning pal, plenty of original material...go find somewhere else to show your internet prowess. What material have you contributed again? That's what I thought.

Does anyone know what this structure was? It looks like it was bridge. It is located in Burke, across from Burke Village II Shopping Center, next to a pedestrian bridge going over Pohick Creek.

But the only thing that comes to mind is that it was an access road for the former Bell's Pond.

From the Late 70 early 80 it was always pipes to yes go to Bell Pond or that area, I recall at one time downstream a short distance was an old abandoned Car in the water, don't know what ever happened to it.

Honestly, you mother fuckers just need to stop. So what if someone pulls a photo from one site and posts it on another. Nobody is doing it for monetary purposes, they are just doing it for educational/entertainment/informational purposes. Get over yourselves already.

Thanks Ronnie! We would love it if you would hang out here with us once in awhile. I think your write up on BITD brought a bunch of new users here and we thank you for that. I see that you are very anti-Trump and that makes you a great person in my book. Nice detective work and thanks for sharing. Lots of remnant farm
out-buildings from long ago that are incorporated into today's
