Well, it didn't "stand for" it, CRescent was used as the mnemonic.

Old joke:
Phone rings; small child answers.
"Is your daddy home?"

"No."

"Can you write down a message for me?"

"OK."

"Please tell him Mr. Jones called, and to please call him back at CApital 3-1234."

"I don't know how to make a capital 3!"

Kids today won't even know what that joke is about!

Nowadays the joke is:

A local Hispanic wants to work at the paint store, but the interviewer is skeptical on his grasp of English. So he says, "Please use 'green', 'pink', and 'yellow' in a sentence.

Jose say, "Ok, mang. When the phone goes 'green green', I pink it up and say 'yellow'."

Hmm, watched Blow Up a year or two back. It is hard to think of it as "adult entertainment," but a lot has changed since it was released in 1966. (My hair was still brown then.)

You sure about that? A lot of those mnemonics were based on the location of the switching station. Such naming even persisting after mnemonics fell out of use.

I grew up in West Springfield with 451 (HighLand 1, station on Highland Street near Atteentee Road) and 569 (Keene Mill 9, station next to Washington Irving). The (then) more recent houses in Burke Center were on 250, which I always suspected was BurKe 0.

Well, ok, there was definitely some picking -- "Hey, this one is on Old Keene Mill, is 56 available?", so you can say that meant it "stood for", but it's not how exchange nicknames were all chosen. It made sense when a name was available to pick one that sort of fit, just so folks could remember more easily ("Aunt Maisie lives in Springfield, right? What's that exchange?").

http://ourwebhome.com/TENP/TENproject.html talks about it some under "Mapping Between Exchange Names and Central Offices":

With the help of contributions to the project, it now seems that exchange names and central offices were closely linked. Originally, the central office name was also the exchange name, and the central office was often named for the town or street where it was located. Later, central offices started serving multiple exchanges. In many cases more than one central office in an area would use the same exchange name, but they would serve different exchanges. For example, one office might serve MUlberry-7, while another one served MUlberry-5.

So I guess we're splitting hairs here. I'd argue that since it wasn't a hard link, "stood for" is too strong, but I do see your point.

In Humpty Dumpty world, words just mean whatever someone wants them to mean. Nothing more and nothing less. And apparently, there's always the chance that someone was just speaking sarcastically. Such as Richard Nixon when he said, "I am not a crook."

Definitely after 75, that POS Monza on the left end gives that away. I would say it's a little later. Maybe 1981-82 or so.
To me, the car with the trunk open looks like an early 80's Delta 88 .

Fran,

The Memco photo was most likely 1976ish. The give away on this one is the first generation Chevrolet Vega 1970-73 in very good condition, and the plaid leisure slacks with the white shoes worn by the shoppers loading their car.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The photo of the Roy's is Pickett Shopping Center, and someone else hit the mark on this one 1979ish as Ford Mustang is a 1979-81 model.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The photos I liked best was the Burger Chef/Popeye's before and after. The ad was dated 1972 so that was not the issue, but look at the U.S. Mail Jeep parked beside the Burger Chef. It is the Pony Express style logo and paint work that was changed in 1972. Remember the U.S. Mail boxes that were red and blue?

Look at the sapling tree that is very near the Jeep, and compare it to the Popeye's photo. Much of the landscaping changed at this restaurant, but that tree has grown quite a bit.

Thanks for the great photos.

What kind of car is that cab? That hub cap looks MOPARish to me, a Dodge Monaco perhaps? Or maybe a AMC product such as a Matador?

Then it looks like a Mustang, Datsun or old Carrola followed by the Maverick and then some kind of Olds or buick then another Datsun. The last two IDK.

Look at that LTD next to the world class Granada at Memco. That ass end on the LTD really looks like a 78. So it's gotta be later than that.

Maybe the guy in the trunk is a little, ahem...behind the times as far as wardrobe is concerned. Glad that would never happen to me....

That body style of the Ford LTD was produced from 1974 - 1978. There were subtle changes made to each year. This is the problem with identifying automobiles post 1971 as they were the same year after year.

The combination of the Ford LTD, and the clothing of the shoppers, and the great condition of the Chevrolet Vega pegs this photo in 1976 timeframe.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The big Mopar Taxi Cab looks to be about a 1972 Plymouth Fury III. Once again we have the body style issue to ascertain the exact model year.

The other cars in the Roy's parking lot appear to be a 1974 Datsun B-210, a 1973 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and another 1974-78 Ford LTD.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Always open to feedback - Thanks

Anyone remember the cemetery scene is the 1968 movie Night of the Living Dead?

That was the car "Johnny" drove up to the cemetery before he was attacked by the zombie.

In the old aerial of Annandale, what’s going on in that building where all the cars are parked out front? Are there any cars parked in front of the houses lined up behind that building? I can’t make it out and I’m wondering what time of day it is.

I like how most of the buildings around the intersection are gas stations. The one in the fork being the obvious newer model - like a Sheetz today.

I also like how the hard top roads had rough edges (no curbs or shoulders) and you just pulled off anywhere into a dirt lot and parked however it was. The days of less people, more freedom and lots more opportunity for fun. Of course, I missed those days, but I can imagine.

Causeican, I believe that building was the Post Office...I have to find an old brochure. That newer gas station was also a car dealer and actually the same building did morph into Three Chefs and later Fudruckers.

The trees in the photo are totally bare - No leaves.

Photo taken in winter - January or February because of the angle of the shadows cast from the poles, trees, and buildings.

The length of the shadows puts this photo taken about 3pm on a winter afternoon.

I think Hardees bought Roy Rogers around here from Marriott, and some other chains in other areas. They expanded too quickly and went out of business in this area. You see them south of here, more in NC than in southern VA.

I liked them somewhat but not at the expense of loosing Roy Rogers, thanks Marriott...

The car dealer sold Kaiser Frazers. Kaiser bought Willys in 1953, stopped making passenger cars in 1955. Kept making Jeeps until American Motors bought them out in the 60s.

Henry J Kaiser also formed Kaiser Permanente for his west coast shipyard workers.

Thanks for the pic. That looks to be early 2000's. I think the first building was completed in the early 70's. Any pictures of it then? I would have thought those buildings would have been a big deal at the time.

There is a Roy Rogers on Route 1 in Alexandria, near Woodlawn Plantation and Fort Belvior. That's definitely in Fairfax County.

That is NOT the Woodies at 7 Corners, despite the original errant caption. It has been shared over and over with the bad caption.

It's Wheaton Plaza.

Those are NOT signal towers. They are markers for rows of each company within that brigade.

The signal tower was at the highest point, right next to the Minor House (which is about to be torn down).

Here's a pic of the signal tower at Minor's Hill. Note the evergreen-wrapped archway in the background at center. That's what you're seeing in the original picture. There are pics of the same structures on Shuter's HIll in Alexandria and on Upton's Hill near Seven Corners.

Popeyes at 236 and John Marr aka the "Asian Obstacle Course."

Never fails when you're at that light that an Asian woman on the service road will sit and wait until the light changes and then try to get across. Only to stop half-way in panic until the light turns red again.

It looks like a park of some kind. There is a baseball diamond in the western corner of the property. There appears to be trees or shrubs planted within the circle.

The long rectangle shapes? Busses or trailers?

Whatever it was is gone.

I have no clue what it is, but I don't think those are vehicles. They are at least half the size of the houses across the street, and seem very evenly spaced.

Looking at the maps at http://www.historicaerials.com it was not yet there in 1949 and already gone in 1962.

Perhaps some short-lived military use during the Korean War?

Regarding the Roy Rogers on Picket St:

Based on the cars in the photo, the photo is from the 1975-1977 time frame.

I grew up in MT. Vernon, but I used to swim at the Star Light? Indoor pool across route 236. The pool has been gone since the late '70s or early '80s. I used to go across to the Roy's after swimming. This was in late 1977.

The Roy Rogers is now Einstein Bagels

I live in Annandale and have eaten at the Einstein Bagels many times.

And every time I pass it, I think of the old pool across the street.

first of all, this thread is amazing.
I've been wondering about this field and the 2 little historic-looking houses I see on my commute in a field off henderson/wolf run shoals rd in the clifton area

Does anyone know anything about this random field and the houses there?
