Looks like the shopping center where Rays the Steaks is located is behind the gas station in that picture of 1625 Wilson Blvd.

Back before county stickers, they had county tags. They were a smaller metal tag that mounted above the regular tag. I remember them but I can't remember when they stopped using them.

Thanks DH. That's a cool piece of local history that I have never heard before. Bet those would be collectables.

The metal county tags with the license plate ..I think they went when Va went with the All White plates instead of Black one Year, White the other..72 I Say.or 73 with 72 being the last year.

For 1973 the State went with stickers to validate plates rather than replacing the plates every year. That's when the county tags went out, although the Town of Clifton still has Town tags.

The PBA (Professional Bowlers Association) used to have a stop on their tour here every other year.

What I liked about this bowling alley over others in the area was that they did not have counters on the machines. A group of 3-5 of us would spend a Saturday / Sunday afternoon bowling 20-25 games total and pay for 2 games each.

It was the crossing over the Occoquan at 123. The remnants of that bridge are now a pedestrian bridge at the mill in Occoquan

Bout 1975 Id say. I don't remember the flag, but they did and do have some old Civil War relics like a excellent US Springfield issued to Union troops and cannon shells. And that Bear is Still There!! The Original Clark Bros were from Warrenton they lived on a big farm ..Really big 1000 acers + One was Jim and The Other John I believe.. One liked to play Bluegrass music the other started a gun business at the farm. About 1959 they went in together in the Gun Business and opened this store about 1960, it was a former house..In 1970 one of the Bros, was killed in a accident at the store. The other passed I think about 2005.. His Nephew is the Current owner Steve Clark. I bought my first handgun there in 1975 a Colt single action. I always enjoyed a ride and shoot out here, back when traffic was no problem.. Today in the Eve..Its Just like NOVA.. And you had to go round Warrenton then..No Bypass but that road where The Howard Johnsons and Frost Diner is ..was the bypass then..The gas station at RT 15?? Or 17 north to the Plains.. To I66 ..on that "Bypass" used to have many Great Bluegrass shows there back in the 70's with all kinds of people playing and Jamming..

I shot my first gun at Clark Brothers in 1994, did some clay pigeons that same day. Still a good place with helpful staff, I had an issue with my 12 gauge recently that I couldn't figure out - they could have very easily ripped me off but didn't.

Some great pork at the gas station-like restaurant about 1/4 mile from there.

The picture of the apartment development ruined by a tornado- I lived there. I went that day to Solomons Island with my dad, I heard about it on the radio. Picket shopping center had a Safeway in it, canned goods and groceries were everywhere. Woodson and Frost was across the street. My sister went to Woodson HS and had to finish out in Oakton? I think in the evenings. I went to Frost, it wasn't touched. As for our apartment, we lived on the side closest to the woods..did not get hit by tornado. Wow. Memories.

I drove by there a couple of weeks ago

It is a few blocks west of Washington ST, near the intersection with rt 1

There is a historical marker that explains the history.

There is an old Black Baptist Church across the st.

In Annandale.. I can still see that STAR .38 special reloading machine on the bench..made since the 1920's by the same family.! LOL..Wheres The PICs??

I Never shot there.. Too expensive for my blood..but it was there , they provided a service to NOVA and many people did and liked the place..

For me it was A old Rusted Pickup.. way back in the country...Or CBros..Or..I did shoot One Time at the Fairfax Rod and Gun Club in P.W. Co..early 70's they had a yearly sight in at 50 yrds open to the public..Way to high for Po Folk like me..$$ and I would have been blackballed as well LOL!! But I have enjoyed some good shoots at the Quantico Marine base range too.years ago. As a Civilian.. Not a Marine..and I did get a good look at their Marine 1000 yd sniper range and have some good gun nut talks with Real U.S. Marines..as well as some other military service members who were on rifle teams.

That's when Burt Reynold's and Goldie Hawn were in town filming Best Friends. They were staying at the Tyson's Marriott and when the crazy storm that caused in the 14th st Air Florida crash, Marriott lost power and they came over to the Ramada to stay. I was also at the Ramada at the time. Met Goldie (looking very tired) and spent the evening talking w/ Keenan Wynn and his wife. Wonderful old Hollywood people.

Not really an "old" picture but a historic one. I can remember my Dad bringing home pizzas from Bazzano or the Fortuna (in kings park shopping center) back in the 70s maybe even late 60s.

I grew up in MT. Vernon, so travelled Rt1 a lot

The old Red Barn building is still there as you descend Snake Hill into Hybla Valley. It's on the right. It has changed names many, many times since the Red Barn closed in the mid '70s. I remember the day I first rode a bike sucessfully, in '75, we went to the Red Barn afterwards.

There was also a Lums on Rt 1 on the right, right before you got to the Kmart as you headed towards Alexandria.

There was a big HJ's a little further down RT ! near the intersection with Ft Hunt Rd. There's a new Hotel on the spot.

I always liked the distinctive orange canopy that the HJ's had.

This won’t be as much fun as old shopping centers, but...

I was looking in the Fairfax County Historic View Finder for that western amusement park off 29 but I don’t think it falls within the limited timeframes provided. It must have been after ’53 and I know it was gone way before ’97. Maybe gone before ’75. Why is there such a time gap in their system?

Anyway, I came across this view and was wondering what are those scratch marks in 1953 aerial? It looks like giant chicken scratch?

same area/different years (Ffx Govt Ctr)
(1) 1997
(2) 1953
(3) overlay

It’s funny how the County took that land exactly how it was cut out back in 1953.

picture of Howard Johnson’s at Circle: Where does that road go behind the restaurant? Is that a trailer park or maybe one of those Cottage Parks. haha that sounds funny “cottage parks” people probably had a lot of fun back then!

Hey DH, this is the Red Barn that became a cleaners on Annandale Rd. Red Barn sold an unusual piece of chicken called a "keel" - who can explain what that was? I remember it. Could order it by name. A piece of white meat from the breast area.

Hey Sigmund, that's not Annandale Road. The one on Annandale Road had a gas station (Mobil) to the right of it and woods to the left. I grew up on Annandale Road. I think someone has said that one is the one in Fairfax on Rt. 50?

Agreed not Annandale Rd. We used to travel the storm sewer and come out across the street from the Barn. It was the coolest place to be on a
hot summer day since our homes had no A/C.As I recall the woods next to it had a small shed where the some homeless folks lived.

Hahaha, we used to travel in the storm sewers near Beech Tree Elementary School. Fun stuff. We used candles to explore, which just added to the fun.

Also yeah, that is definitely not the Red Barn on Annandale road. We used to ride our skateboards in the cemented creek bed near the McDonald's down there sometimes.

No pictures, but did anybody collect beer cans back in the 70's?

Lived in Annandale, was an old dump off of Wakefield Chapel Road, circa 1973-1974. Would find conetops, Old Georgetowns (both the "big label" and "small label" cans) and Senate (both the white can and light blue one) (both from Heurich in DC) Black Label (Baltimore), Gunthers, (Balt) Richbrau (Richmond) and Valley Forge from Philly. Also would find blue Bromo Selzter from Baltimore bottles that have value today, in the $50 range.

Back then, a conetop was only 25 or 30 years old! Heck, WWII was like 30 years old then! 30 years ago now was MTV, "Coke Classic" 7-11 nachos, etc. Doesn't seem that long ago. Today, I am the age of a World War II vet in the mid 70's, which is freaky. I thought those guys were ancient beings back then, when the world was black and white, dusty, because that's what it looked like on TV!

Where that old dump was, it must have been around an old farm house, which according to tax records was built in the 30's. No houses around then, obviously.

Yes! I remember Heurich cone tops were considered very valuable. We found a few at some old dump near an old barn out rte 50 once, but they were mostly in sad shape. Closer to home we found a small old dump or possible teenage hangout that was full of black label cone tops in the woods of Roundtree Park.

I still have most of my beer can collection packed away up in the attic. Was thinking of trying to sell it, but I don't know if anyone still collects cans.

KFC had keels, too. They used to cut chickens into nine pieces instead of eight. The breasts had only the ribs part of a split breast. The keel is the breastbone with the cartilage extension and most of the white meat attached.

yea, it makes me wonder what’s in that patch of woods.

The only difference noticeable from the pictures appears to be they opened up the creek into a couple of ponds.

He was behind Jackies Joseph Gawlers Hearse. I snapped this pic as he was coming.I did not want the camera in my way when he got right up on me so I could see him.. I saw him 3 times during his presidency, once jogging on Rock Creek with his Limo in the road and SS agents with bikes all round him.

Hey Sleepy, his name wasn't Sandy was it? I knew this guy in high school name Sandy, he worked at the Gino's at 7 Corners and was kind of chicken crazy. I would go in before closing and get a 3 piece box and he would stuff as many pieces in the box as he could.

Was Hunters Lodge at the corner of Shirley Gate and Lee Highway? Whatever that place was right before it was torn down there was a tree growing through the roof of the place.

That is NOT the Red Barn on Annandale Road. It's a location in Fairfax. The building to the left is still there.

Thanks to everyone who corrected my mistake on the Red Barn location. I previously was given the wrong info from someone trying to identify the location.
Now I realize the picture was the old Red Barn in Fairfax next to the Burger King. I might be mistaken again - but didn't that Burger King have a 1950's burger joint theme in the late 90's? I know some of the McDonalds did a 50's theme for a while, but it was odd for a Burger King. Anyone remember this? Thanks.

I do not recall a 50's theme there, although I left the area from '95-'99 so maybe it was during that period. I have always hated their drive through. Holy cow was that a difficult one to navigate in anything larger than a Prius! Maybe they have redone it since I was last there?

The worst drive thru I remember was on Leesburg Pike/Bailey's Skyline area...I believe it was a Jack in the Box? on the right going to 7 Corners. I was driving my girlfriend's/Dad's 1969 Cadillac Convertible. I could barely get it around the corner...took me @ 20 minutes and a few 500lb bumper scrapes. Good thing I had a few daytime beers.

Maybe this was the location...from an older JIB/FFXU thread..."I know it wasn't in FFX but there was one on Rt 7 and Beauregard St. at the Alexandria/Arlington border also".

Guess some of you might be missin Grevey's soon too

from WTOP Dec 1

WASHINGTON — Grevey’s Restaurant & Sports Bar, owned and operated for years by former Washington Bullets Kevin Grevey, will close its doors Dec. 11.

Grevey cites an inability to renegotiate a favorable lease at its Yorktown Shopping Center location in Falls Church.

Grevey opened the sports bar in the Merrifield neighborhood in 1979, when he was playing for the NBA champion Washington Bullets. The bar and restaurant is known for its pub food and dozens of televisions.

“Serving Merrifield has been a pleasure and a privilege,” Grevey said in a statement. “I will miss the camaraderie with our state and regulars. We had a great run.”

Grevey says he is searching for a new location. The restaurant’s catering business will remain open after the restaurant and bar close

Grevey told WTOP he would like to reopen Grevey’s at a new, smaller location within the next six months to a year.

“We have a broker and are looking in the Merrifield area for a place with some foot traffic, and metro stop or in Arlington or near the Verizon Center. I’d love to open near the Verizon Center,” Grevey told WTOP.

Grevey says nearby restaurants like Sweetwater Tavern and Glory Days Grill have offered to hire his employees after the restaurant closes.

Grevey’s will host a goodbye party with live music on Dec. 10.

Most of the cars are very domestic. There are 2 VWs & Jaguar.

The coolest car is the 1948 Studebaker Commander facing away from the camera.
