It looks like part of Shirlington, off the main street. Not remembering the diagonal parking or the Ben Franklin though.

I had an apartment in Presidential Gardens during the mid seventies. Spent many late nights at the Waffle Shop.
Four Mile Run flooded the area shown in the photo Sept. 1975. I assisted the police and Fire Dept. with getting some of the elderly out. They couldn't do it legally as a lot of the stubborn old farts refused to leave. I would go in, persuade them gently and once outside it became a rescue.
I had a lot of "good times" there, if memory serves me correctly.

It's McLean, near the intersection of Old Dominion and Old Chain Bridge Road.

The Amoco in the photo is now a BP station.
The Crown in the photo is now a Shell station.
The Exxon in the photo is now a Exxon/7-Eleven.
The McDonalds which can be barely seen to the right of the white Grand Marquis wagon is now an outdoor garden/flower store.

Anyone remember this place. It was where one of the new Telegraph road ramps are now. I remember you could go in there and order some kind of liquor drink and they would give you the tiki head cup it came in. I don't remember the food being that great though.....

That Grand Marquis wagon might be a woody or it could just be a shadow. I love those old woody wagons.

Ah, Honolulu... The guy who owned it used to work at the Trader Vic's in the Hilton on K Street -- not the Washington Hilton, where shots rang out in March 81 -- and had lots of those "fancy" drinks full of alcohol. Suffering Bastard, Singapore Sling, Mai Thai, Flaming Volcano, etc.

They weren't very concerned about folks being 21 either...

Good times

No, they were not worried about carding people. We had friends that were underage and they could get served. I did manage to find this photo. Its not very good, but even a good photo would not show much. The place was kind of hidden. Someone above mentioned it was called Honolulu Hut, I don't remember that at all. The photo shows the Honolulu Hut after it was renovated.

It was seeder before it was updated, and re-named.

Incorrect. Those are not signal towers. They are archways for each regiment/company for a given brigade. You see them at other forts and campsites in the area during that time period. On Shuter's Hill, on Upton's Hill, etc.

Fairfax County had many bars and clubs that were a little on the rough side.

The Cow Palace where all of those top tier musical acts performed was in or near San Francisco.

While I do not remember a Cow Palace here in the area, if one actually existed, it would not have attracted acts anywhere close in stature to the ones on those posters and announcements.

It was in the south part of S.F along the Bayshore Freeway or what every the main road up from San Bruno or Daly City was. Along by the SF Bay.It was a gritty place much bigger then it looked from the road as the front was all you saw and it was long going away from the road. I hate to burst you bubble on the pic of Edison HS. Yes it is Edison HS, but the date it was taken was after 1973.

The Ford Pinto in the parking lot is a 1974 or later model. Pintos came out in the fall of 1970 as a 1971 model, and the bumpers on the Pinto are the larger crash bumpers, that were mandated by the Federal Government for the 1974 model year - That came out in the fall of 1973.

You are correct, the wagon is a pinto in the photo. I am not the best with the years of cars in some of the photo's.

I went to Edison just one year before we moved and I had to switch to WSHS but my friends were at Edison and lived in Rose hill so that was where I hung out most of the time once I got a drivers license and a crappy car.

This picture is where the route 1 access road is across from beacon hill shopping center. The square building on the left is where a restaurant called 'The Mustache Cafe'. The car wash before it is still there. From the position where this pic was taken is where a Wal-greens pharmacy stands now.

They tore the skating rink down to put up another building. When they dug down to put the footers, and lower levels in, the excavating contractor un-earthed an old dump. The dirt was loaded into dump trucks, and we hauled the dirt down to Fort Belvoir.

We entered Belvoir off of RT 1 - Turning left, and thru the Tully Gate. We hauled up Poe Road to the large dumping area they were filling in.

The dozens of dump trucks ran for a couple of weeks dumping dirt at Ft Belvoir.

Each truck load of dirt was full old bottles from the 1800's to the early 1900's. Thousands upon thousands of old bottles. Whiskey, patent medicine, food, ink wells, round bottom soda bottles.

A buddy of mine found a rusty old civil war bayonet, and what we think was a gun barrel. I found some old eye glasses, and a small tin box full of marbles.

The stuff we found was on the surface of the loads dumped on the ground before the bulldozers pushed it into the marshy fields.

I have wondered if there was a way to get a permit to dig on Belvoir to go after what was buried.

This happened in 1988

Apparently, the Doors played there...and it seems Jim Morrison was angry and/or drunk and ended up throwing a cymbal into the crowd, and a girl ended up getting a cut on her face.

Can't recall where I saw or read this, or if it is even true.

This was alleged to be circa 1968, when in fact the doors did play there.

Wow! That’s the kind of story I like to pick up from reading this thread. What a shame to not explore the history of that dump. Lost history now. Doubtful you’d ever get into the base to dig unless you are military. Maybe you can find someone =on the base to sponsor a you /a dig.

My favorite place to skate as a kid. I couldn’t believe they tore it down. What a waste. I still don’t understand why kids don’t roller skate anymore. I couldn’t get enough of it.

Once around dusk at the airport park, I watched fishermen coming in off the river with tons of catfish of varying sizes but all large. I couldn’t believe how many they had caught or the size. One fish was as big as the boat he was in. How did they get him out of the water I wonder. I was astounded. Still am. This was some time between 1977-’82, ’83, I think. idk

Do you mean all the HUGE bridges that make Austin, Dallas, and Houston look shitty? Do you mean the huge death toll that happens on the roads down there? Do you mean the roads with shitty potholes all over the place? Texas roads suck ass. Their speed limits are better but more people die because of those higher limits. Oh, and no one uses those stupid toll roads down there. The traffic is shit in Austin too!

This is Mount Eagle mansion that was located on the property that is now the Montebello Condominiums and the Huntington Metro Station. It was formally owned by Bryan Fairfax, at the time was the priest at Christ Church in Alexandria where George Washington attended. This is where George Washington ate his last meal away from Mount Vernon before he died. The mansion was demolished after years of neglect in 1968. This photo is from the early 1900's.

Quantico was only at mainside, Lake Anna Zip Zero, but todays Rt 208 did go that way. I pass thru there in June 1972 and over Lake Anna was only a depression aarea where trees had benn cun down to stumps. No Clark Bros, No West end of Richmond, and the roads round Marylands C Bay and down to Solomans and Point Lookout were not improved..I traveled Southern Maryland back in 71-74 and remember when Rt 5 was widened from 2 to 4 lanes. When The Stardust was the place for the Country Music Fans to go.

I was told these were pictures of Mount Eagle. I did look it up on the internet and found other pictures with different additions to the house. This is how the original house must have looked before many additions over the years. I have no idea when these pictures were taken.

My great uncle owned it from the early forties until it's destruction. My folks, married at Christ Church in Alexandria, had their wedding reception at Mt. Eagle. Lots of pics of inside.

My Dad always says that it had a kind of disjointed floorplan due to the additions over the years. It was also used as a hunt or social club house for a period, I think in the twenties. I'd have to ask my dad to be sure. See have some of the furnishings from the house at my dad's as well. Just chairs if I recall correctly...

It would have been a cool house to explore all those disjointed ends. Can you post the pictures? Just take a picture of them with your phone in good light.

Yes! It would be absolutely cool to see the inside if you have could post some pictures. Even more pictures of the home from the outside. Different years and stages of construction. I would love that! I will have to go through some of my uncle's photo's, which may contain a photo of it just before it was torn down. He used to hunt the property in the 60's and 70's.

Maybe he knew my family there, but my great aunt was last to live there full time, and she felt scared because vandals and others from nearby neighborhoods were galavanting on the property at night. I think someone burned the barn down one night and that was the last straw. My uncle didn't want to abandon the house, but after my aunt moved, kids and others realized the house was empty and tore it up. I think FCFD burned it like Ossian Hall but I'm not sure, again I have to get the facts from my dad.
He laughs to this day about his parents, who came down from rural new York thought they'd landed at Tara from gone with the wind! A roaring fire in every fireplace, candelabra lit on all the tables and people (from here!) With strong Virginian drawls. This was back in the winter of '63...

That is what my uncle said, that kids mainly, were everywhere from adjoining properties playing around the property. That is what made him stop hunting on it. I will look right now for the photo of it right before it got torn down or burned. I did not think anyone would want to see that photo. If it were today, this house would have been declared a historic land mark and would have been a part of Mount Eagle Park.

It looks like the mansion right in the middle of the page, with a long driveway out to North Kings Highway that was directly across from Jefferson Mannor shopping center. That must be Rout 1 in the far right corner. This is way before the Huntington Metro. I would love to hear what local... has to say, but I think that's it
