Possibly an antennae array but can't see feed lines or hang-towers in the B&W photo. Thinking a WULLENWEBER type antennae? But, no record of such in the Annandale, VA area. Need to know what this was.

According to the information on the Annandale Chamber of Commerce website, the area photographed is a NIKE Missile site.

There were several types of NIKE Missiles, and some were active longer than others.

This has been a interesting photo to research, although there is little information about this missile site out there.

Please post additional information or corrections about this photo.

Bob Peck was in Ballston not Clarendon, at the corner of Glebe road and Wilson Blvd. It was on the Northwest Corner of the intersection. Bob Peck purchased the land from the First Presbyterian Church when they built the new church at Vermont and Carlyn Springs Rd. just up Vermont Street. Clarendon is east on the other side of Va Square metro station.

I would suggest that it just someone who owns a large property and runs a sod farm. A friend of mine lived near Frying Pan Park and behind their house was a sod farm. Person liked having a large property but did not want to deal with crops. He was cool with us playing frisbee and such on his property as long as we didn't do anything that would really F' up his sod.

That Vienna picture is interesting. The town was renamed Vienna (formerly Ayr Hill) just a few years before this photo was taken. But I do believe the 2nd Mass. was encamped there for a while. This is a well-known photo of the Freeman House, now a museum in the center of town, with the 2nd Mass. using it as a hospital.

Has this picture been posted before? I’m guessing this is at 14th street heading into DC - where the pentagon is now?

I wonder if there is a boardwalk. Maybe there was a merry-go-round in the octagon shaped building. The parking lot was probably across the road in that marked patch of land and then the entrance, across from it where we can’t really see what that looks like because of the trees.

Between the two bridges there’s a little land with a road running through it and what looks like a marina.

Is that a little house on an island just off an undeveloped piece of land next to the second bridge? It looks like it was on the end of that lot and is just washing away or is flooded.

At the very top right is what looks like a house at the end of that little piece of land sticking out into the water. It looks like it’s washing away with the land too.

That picture of that house is from another picture posted earlier of a yellow Torino in Baileys Crossroads shopping center. It is where the clover leaf and public storage place is now at Columbia Pike and Rt. 7 next to Radley Acura.
Back in the day it was behind Crossroads Kawasaki. There use to be pony rides back in there if I remember right.

I loved the pony rides. I got to go there after the family went to the Hot Shoppe in the Baileys Crossroad Shopping Center on Sundays after church -- IF I finished my kid's meal.

Anyone have a picture of that Hot Shoppe, approximately where the ramp from 7 east onto Columbia Pike west is located?

Also anyone have a shot of Pinecrest Pool, it was located at the corner of Braddock and Elmdale?

Thanks!

I seem to remember a white cinder block building with the AMC logo painted on the roof.

Thanks for the picture of the Hot Shoppe. Sleepy -- Bailey's Crossroads was some how related to the circus, winter home or something. There was a VA or Fairfax County historical marker at some point about Lincoln reviewing the troops near the Crossroads during the War of Northern Aggression.

I'm remembering the Used Cars building being by the Seminary Road exit that is off the Columbia Pike ramp to Route 7 east bound. It was by in front of the STOP sign where you would make a right onto Seminary Road. I'm not remembering it being gone, but its not a road I travel on very often.

OK, I remember that brick building housing Crossroads Kawasaki.

At some point, I think it was an antique store. The proprietor also sold County tags (not stickers, metal County tags!). I remember going there with my mum at tag time. All tags, State and County, expired on April 15.

Way back one bridge was called "Long Bridge" and the Area "Jackson City" I'm talking a hundred years ago. The railroad bridge to the upper part looks the same today at the "Swing Bridge " part. the trestles have been removed from the rest. It its totally beat as any one who has been under it lately in a boat knows. Yes the "Infrastructure" of the USA needs a rebuild.

Go to the library and see this book if they still have it "This Was Potomac River"

By Frederick Tilp. He has all kinds of pics and history,. you can't ask him anything .. He died in May 1988. They had 2 copies at the FCPL but they may now be gone. It was out in a reprint and I got one several years back. Very interesting to see the pics and Histories.

And another perspective for the yellow Gran Torino.

The Best Buy mentioned earlier was where the Hot Shoppes was originally--to the right in the photo below. There used to be a deli in that shopping center that had great steak and cheese subs.

Must admit this photo was originally posted in 2013 by Gordon Blvd.

The Rocking Chair Theatre -- the color drawing is by an artist who goes by "Local Color" and at least used to be in an artists' studio in Occoquan. Her drawings feature many great (and often late) Northern Virginia places.

I have drawings of Giffords, the old Frozen Dairy Bar, and L'Auberge chez Francois in a place of honor at Chez Blanche.

Her name is Jackie Liedl and her representative has been at the Fairfax Arts and Crafts show/sale at Fairfax High School that is held in late November/early December. Stifel and Capra are her representatives.

I remember the blizzard of '66 well.

Fond memories of helping my dad dig out our 1963 Chevrolet Impala with my little shovel.

I remember going to the rocking chair theater around Christmas time. This was somewhere around late 60s I believe, If I'm remembering correctly, if you brought a toy for Toys for Tots you got free admission.

Thank you for the heads up. Next time I see a photo I think some people may find of interest, I will scroll all 60 pages to see if it has been posted already.

Man! Those are some big antennas in Arlington 1917. Look how little those houses are. What was that red brick building in the center of the picture? I can’t get over how big those “radio towers” were. Man! That must have been something to see.

You know NVCC allows senior citizens to take classes for free if there are seats available. You could learn how to use the internet properly. You should check it out! No offense intended and thank you for trying to contribute to this great thread.

No, don’t do that. Just post it. I want to see it even if I’ve seen it before. I wish I knew where that Tony’s Market was located.

I was researching some photos of the Memorial Bridge that were taken 1932, and those radio towers were visible up in the area around where the USAF Memorial is located.

I suspect those radio towers were military related.

Part of Fort Myer at some point? Before Arlington Cemetery took over the entire area?

They must have been military or government if that photo was in fact taken in 1917. There was no commercial radio in 1917. The first one on the air was KDKA (Pittsburgh) in 1920. The first in Virginia was in the 1920s in Norfolk.

The Jeff Todd Hwy goes all the way from rt1 to Telegraph road. It's a nice shortcut to the Fairfax Parkway.

Jeff Todd lived in my dad's neighborhood near the Mt Vernon Country Club

He was a big donator to youth athletic causes.

It was a tragedy when he was killed a few years ago.

I used to see him at the Roy's from time to time. I didn't go often, but I remember seeing him there only a few weeks before his death - hew as washing the windows himself.

Great job on narrowing down where the wireless towers were, guys! Any insight into what the large building in the 1st tower pictures is? Part of Ft Meyer?

Any idea when the towers were dismantled?

Americans made no technical contributions to the development of radio (Ok, Tesla did later become an American).

So I wonder if we honored international patents, or just ripped off the inventors in our usual manner?
