Ah. The wee church I was referring to is old enough, but of course that doesn't mean there weren't two churches near each other!

On Oct. 23, 1968, flames gutted Murphy's Five and Dime Store in Clarendon. The blaze was discovered by the crew of Wagon 4 on their return from an alarm at Bergman's Laundry.

That store was right in Rosslyn close to where the Metro station ended up. Here's a 1934 aerial excerpt with the building circled.

That picture is of Chain Bridge. I grew up in Arlington and remember the house/gas station in the picture of the flood. I was just thinking about the house/gas station at Chain Bridge when I clicked on the link to see the latest pictures.

I do not recall exactly when the house/gas station was closed/torn down. I am guessing it may have had something to do with widening the intersection of Glebe/123??

I would guess the house was torn down in the early 70's based on my best guess, but I was a younger kid then, but I clearly recall the house/gas station.

I would like to see if anyone has any pictures of the flood in 1985? I recall going down and seeing the water about 10 feet from the bottom of the current Chain Bridge. This may have also been when West VA was flooded badly as well.

Jimmy Rae's Trampoline Center, circa 1962.

There was such a place in California the same time 1962 in San Jose called Bounceville. No pads on the springs, concrete all around the pits. I bounced a bit and my leg went though where the springs were. Nice skin rash and bruise and that was it for me . The place did not last long..

Holly crap! I completely forgot about Shakey's Pizza. Loved going to that place. Before the traffic got bad around here 1970's, my buddies and I would all pile into a Buick Station wagon and a couple of Ford Mustangs and tear out of the W.T. Woodson H.S. parking lot, drive over into Annandale, stuff ourselves at the buffet and get back to Woodson before class started again after lunch. Friday and Saturday nights were fun too. Cold beer, pizza, and rag time music.

Back in that day. Candy striped shirt piano players, long tables like in a school café, Banjo pickers. And good pizza and cold beer..

I always enjoyed Shakeys Buffet afterward and McGill's too if there still around. Mcgill owned the Shakeys franchise there in the end then operated the buffet and I guess the place now if its still there. Last time I was in they had fantastic Spanish style home made chicken soup, good pizza buffet ,salad bar , but the place was slow and its been about 2 years.

Andrew Ratlif got this picture from the Hayfield high school 1978 yearbook but we are wondering where this Shakey's was located. Maybe Annandale next to PeP Boys but that was king of far from Hayfield. Could it be the one that was in the Tysons area??

There was the Shakey's Pizza on RT 1 that was about 10 minutes away from Hayfield HS.

The parking lot looks like the correct size to what was there, plus the trees in the background fit the location as well.

The Tysons location's parking lot was not as big, and there were no trees around the area.

I agree with Mr Pizza Face its the Shakey's on Route 1 across the street from where Lockheed Blvd. ends on Route 1 -- I mean Jefferson Davis Hwy.

That would be the Shakey's closest to Hayfield HS and it was the last one in the area too.

Haha, they were still using them in '81 when I had behind the wheel. I got so screwed with that. I got classroom driver's ed early, but they they forgot about me or something for behind the wheel. I had to take it in summer school. I had to ride my bike from near Roundtree Park to 7 Corners and then take the bus from 7 Corners to Marshall high school near Tyson's. Total pain in the ass, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Back in 1979 I took the classroom portion at school, and because I didn't want to wait to do the behind the wheel portion I found this driving school that did the entire driving part for $200.00 and only took 5 days.

My parents were horrified because I finished everything on my 16th birthday, and demanded to be taken to the DMV to get my license.

Little did I know that the license would be presented by a judge at a large assembly in Falls Church several weeks later.

Just in time for gas rationing after the Iranians took over the U.S. Embassy in November 1979.

I always thought the large assembly for DL distribution was so bogus, showing gristly pictures of car accidents, someone who had tried to run across 95 near the tank farm on Backlick Road - "we never knew what was so important..." I had mine at TJ "when it was for normal people."

Little did I know that now Fairfax County makes you go up to the courthouse for a presentation which is what I had to do with my son.

The law requiring Drivers Ed for those under 18 went into effect on July 1, 1969. I turned 16 on July 8, 1969. Talk about PISSED. Eight lousy days!

I think Monday, June 30, 1969 still holds the record for the most behind-the- wheel driving tests given in one day. If you waited until July 1 or later you needed drivers' ed.

Anyway, I was in one of the first FCPS behind-the-wheel classes. The car was a 1969 Chevy Impala. The first few days we drove around the high school parking lot with the car's radio tuned to a certain station on which the instructor could talk to all the cars. (pretty hi-tech for 1969, eh?).

When it was time for us to go out on the road, it was three of us kids and the instructor. One of the kids already had his license and was just taking the course for the insurance discount. We ended up driving around Herndon and the instructor told us to pull over at this particular house...his!

Then the instructor hopped out and told us to come back and pick him up in a couple of hours. So off we went, three kids driving around in a FCPS Driver's Ed car. Can you imagine if we had a wreck with no instructor in the car? That dude took a hell of a chance just to get out of doing his job. But everything turned out OK.

None of us told anybody about it...we didn't want anything to fuck us up getting our licenses. Shit, if it happened today, it'd be on the front page of the fucking Washington Post.

in 82 I took it during the summer at Lee, we had the lime green torino and Chevy Nova. The instructor was cool and preferred the burnouts in the parking lot rather than on the road. It was a little tough since all the driving prior I had done was in a 1980 Datsun 810 Stick.. Automatics goose a little easier...LOL

We had a couple Torinos and a couple Montegos and one nova. The nova was much easier to parallel park and everyone wanted to take their test in it. The montegos were light green as they were retired park police cars and you could see where the park police letters had been peeled off them.

I would bet that it was not. The government actually regulated banks back those days and banking laws were enforced.

I remember the "new" West Springfield High School. I took algebra there the first summer WSHS was open. It was the only air-conditioned high school in FFXCO and that's why they held summer school there.

Fran Conia, could that possibly be Ravensworth Shopping Center? Having trouble deciphering the signs. The Safeway was sited horizontally along the back of the shopping center.

This photo was taken in the summer of 1965, and this is a picture of Rose Hill Shopping Center at the corner of Franconia Road and Rose Hill Drive.

Great picture - Photo Detective.

And I too got my license after a ceremony (safety lecture) with a judge at Falls Church HS in 1970.Along with a hundred or more other people. I don't remember getting it there.. but had to go and I think they might have sent it out.. They don't do that anymore but if you were under 18 that's the way it was.

Talking about late 70's Drivers Ed in the area.

Arlington used to have a trailer in the school parking lot that had Driving Simulators. Probably from the early to mid 70's. As I recall some sort of video display of a live recorded footage. Had a brake, steering wheel, turn signals and so forth. Any pictures would be interesting.

The other part of this was the Seat Belt simulator which was on trailer that they would bring around to the schools. A seat on a angled sled that they would put against the curb. The seat would be released and slide down the sled with an ABRUPT stop that would be like a 5 mile and hour simulated crash.

Do not think they do the simulators or the sled anymore. I guess with airbags and such this may not be used so much anymore.

How they could do great with Xbox system driving simulators these days!

Good comments on the FCPS behind the wheel driver training. When I took it in the summer of 1970 at Falls Church High School, they were using mostly Ford Galaxies. Many of the instructors were high school athletic coaches. I remember them having us drive out to Herndon a few times (considered the boonies back then) to practice freeway driving on the beltway and Dulles Access Road (no tolls but you had to drive to the airport and then turn around to head back to the Elden Street exit).

After finishing the class I remember going to the old DMV office on South Glebe Road in Arlington to take the test. Long line but the examiner was pretty friendly. At least I passed on the first attempt.

I don't remember the ceremony with the judge. Must not have impressed me very much.

I guess I must have taken Drivers Ed in 1979?? As mentioned, usually the PE Teachers were the primary instructors. I do not think this was part of the PE program, but it could have been. What I do recall is the behind the wheel and the simulator/classroom was all during school hours. Was kind of nice being able to drive around the area outside of rush hour which back then was no where like the mess we have today.

Trying to get my kids behind the wheel time after school and on the weekends with today's asshole drivers that are always in a hurry was NO fun. But I finally found a big development in Maryland off of Falls Road that was easy for the kids to drive around in without a lot of traffic to deal with.

I also do not recall going before a judge to get my license. I do recall doing the behind the wheel test with a driving test person from the DMV.

Not my drivers ed story, but my brother's.

Summer of 1981 he had to take behind the wheel at Edison as a summer school class. The class met in the back parking lot. I was the little sister who whined about having to get up early and ride drive to Edison. We did the same routine every morning with my mom driving and dropping off brother in the back.

We noticed the same guy every day who parked in the front of the school and jogged to the back lot. He simply drove himself to/from behind the wheel of course without a license. Easy! Oh! They were Gran Torinos

One of my hs friends drove a carload of us girls to school every morning for months BEFORE she even had a license! He parents had an extra car and left for work together...early. They never found out.

Likely because of these two examples that we have all sorts of rules and restrictions that werent there in the 80s.

Hell yeah I remember them!

The "Signal 30" series were the goriest that I saw. They were produced by the Ohio State Police. They even played the audio of the final cries and moans of people trapped in cars or on stretchers. You can watch 'em on YouTube.

No way they would show that shit to today's precious snowflakes.

Death on the Highway was pretty grisly, as well as Red Asphalt and the other California scare flicks.

I remember "Rails of Thunder" very well. It was very badly acted, and in one scene there is a drunk approaching a rail crossing. You think he's just going to cross without looking, but he stops for the train. When the train passes, he drives across when *BAM!* he gets hit by a train from the other direction.

Quality stuff.

I remember having several cars that had the Civil Defense symbol on the AM radio dial. These were the Conelrad settings, and in the event of an emergency, important info was to be broadcast on these frequencies.

I asked my dad what those things were on the radio of our '61 Ford Station Wagon, and he said "We could listen to those radio stations if the commies drop the big one on us".

The top of Minor's Hill is actually in Arlington, VA. It is where Williamsburg, Yorktown, Sycamore and Powhatan all converge. There is a small park there now along with an underground reservoir. A long time ago, I believe there were tennis courts, but I could be mistaken on that. The base of Minor's hill is in both Fairfax and Arlington. It overlooks the city and unincorporated areas of Falls Church.

In your picture, the answer to the question is that those are signal towers. Being the highest point in Arlington, Minor's Hill was ideally suited to serve as a signal station.

Very cool. I never knew... and with that, I found this:

Union forces began erecting lines of high wooden towers for use as signal stations in August 1861. Using flags and torches atop the towers, these became the first fixed lines of signal communications. The Signal Corps used the towers with great success, cementing the unquestionable significance of signal communications toward victory in warfare.
