Trade Dollars are worth more than regular silver dollars. Usually $200+ each coin.

Sleepy,

The only way to flip a page is by reaching the set number of individual posts, not by the number of lines or the size/length of the post. I think it is set at 100 posts per page. Each post could have 1 line in it or 100, it does not matter. That is why the moron posted his shut at the top of the new page just to cause problems since he knew it would take another 99 posts to flip the page.

Best method is to have someone with a registered username (use no real names or actual email accounts ever!) report the offending posts to Cary withe the links that appear for registered users.

He may not moderate much, but this thread should be kept away from the overflowing sewage common elsewhere on the site.

An old aerial photo of Wolf Trap looking east toward the Tyson's Corner area, with the Dulles Access Road snaking upward. There was not a Toll Road yet.
Tyson's is at the top of the picture. The bridge crossing the Access Road at the top of the pic is Rt. 7, the bridge at the bottom of the pic is Trap Road. Notice that there is almost nothing at Tyson's as compared to today.

Id say late 70's..In the early 70's there was not much along there, small building and a grass area that's it. Least seen from the Airport Rd.I used to ride to Dulles on weekends to go to the observation deck and watch planes and get something to eat when it was much cheaper. maybe a quarter to park.

For the 1000th time I saw Frank Sinatra walking thru the terminal on the long hall with his entourage of Henchmen..LOL..I knew who he was and did a double take..I was surprised how small he was..I thought he was a big guy. That's Movies and TV..!

If you look closely at the building in the foreground you will notice that a good number of floors on the right rear side of the building have collapsed during construction. There was a Toys-R-Us very close by and i was with my Mom when the collapse happened as we were about to get into our family Station Wagon. I can remember like it was yesterday very loud and all the debris falling. Was a scary thig as a kid.

The old house that had been mentioned a few times in the past of this thread.
I remember seeing this in an old book that I used to check out from the Shrevewood Elementary library as a kid. I actually had it checked out at the time that it burned, and scribbled in the book the date that it happened, (I know, vandalism). I was just making my own record of it not being there anymore.
Anyway, I was able to find a "used" copy recently, (almost brand new), and scanned this picture from that.

Hopefully "The Barn" picture wasn't too big. I know that some people apologized in the past for such a large picture, but I like to be able to see the detail, instead of a small thumbnail pic.
Hopefully nobody still has dial-up, to complain about a large pic.

A house called "Longview" off of Shreve Road west of Falls Church.
Built in 1770 by, and for, Col. James Wren, the architect of The Falls Church, Pohick Church, and the Fairfax Courthouse.
Currently for sale if you have a spare $1.2 Million.
The first pic is from the 1950's, & the second one is current, as you can see from the watermark from the realtor trying to sell it.

It was between Lee Highway and Arlington Blvd. closer to the Lee Hwy. side. If you are on Lee heading east, getting ready to cross into Falls Church, turn right on Cameron Road, just before Summerfield. The road starts to gradually climb a low hill. The house used to be at the crest of the hill on the right side, where #2824 Cameron is now.
There is nothing remaining of the place now, but during most of the '70's (maybe even early '80's), the burned out structure remained.
I was the mailman for those streets in the winter of '94-'95 and always wished that I could be delivering to the old Barn instead of the new house.
p.s. If anybody Google Maps the place, the chimney of the old white house next door to the Barn I always thought was pretty cool.

Some more 7-Corners Love. I'm sure not everybody will remember Jelleff's Womens Apparel Store next to the huge Giant on Broad St below Pistone's (Howard Johnson's) across from Koons. It opened in 1956 when 7-Corners Shopping Center opened and closed in 1979. On par w/ Garfinckel's and Woodies. It then became SYMS and now 24 Hr Fitness. Here is a shot of an early 60's fashion show and what is there now. Does anyone have an exterior shot of Jelleff's?

Blanche, I knew you would remember. After we moved down here from Maine, my Dad HAD to go to that Giant at Xmas time, because that was the only store around that had fresh Oysters for his Xmas Eve tradition, Oyster Stew.

I don't have a pic when it was Jelleff's, but I was able to find one when it was Sym's. I don't think they changed the outside look very much, from what I remember.
But I will admit that I never really paid that much attention, being a women's clothing store. I didn't have much use for it. LOL

Wow Fran conia, 2 great pictures, (for me at least), Thanks.
I'd say that they are both mid '60's, probably taken on the same day. The first one has the famous Johnson's Auto Body before it had all the little statues and things put up on the roof. The picture is taken from the side of Lee Highway looking west toward the intersection with Gallows Road. Notice the gabled building on the right side of the pic in the background, it sat on the southwest side of the intersection, Johnson's on the southeast side.
The second picture is looking back east toward where the first picture was taken. You can see the same gabled house. but from the other side.
In the first pic, the intersection is just to the right of the pic, out of sight, but you can see it in the second.

The car in front of the S&H was an early Chevy Nova. We had one and it caught on fire with my Mom and little sister in it (engine) somehow Dad was able to fix it, although there was a circle on the hood where the fire started.

Good Times!

While we are in Merrifield, here is an aerial photo from September 26th, 1964. It has the previous Lee Highway/Gallows Road intersection at the top, and follows Gallows south to it's intersection with Arlington Blvd.
Notice the Lee Highway Drive-In that has been talked about a few times in this thread. Plus the Luther Jackson School next door.
I cropped this down from a HUGE picture from the USGS (United States Geological Survey)

I'm thinking that it might be an AMC Rambler

Yeah, I wasn't too sure about that, I was thinking that I shouldn't post that.
Maybe it was one of the first department stores in the Tyson's area that was called that.
Or maybe it was all just a bad acid flashback. I hate getting those.
And the worst thing about my acid flashbacks? I've never done acid before. LOL

David, Thanks for the pic of Sym's. that is very close to what Jelleff's looked like. About G,E.M., that was a membership type of store in Tysons/Alexandria in the 70's.

The car under the sign is a first generation Chevy II, which later became the Chevrolet Nova for the 1969 model year.

Cheers!

Correct, Thanks! The Nova name was used as part of the Chevy II lineup prior to '69. It was the top tier Chevy II.

Landmark Mall, over and out.
Yes I know its not really Fairfax, its Alexandria- and its not old pictures but if it hangs around on the internet forever it will be one day.
Pics taken 01/28/17 about lunch time.
The Mall is scheduled to shut the doors 01/31/17.
There were actually more people in Macy's for store closing sale than were in the whole mall this past Christmas.
When I was about ready to leave, a security dude came up and asked me to stop taking photos, so I'm thinking, seriously ? The mall is only open for 3 more days? Whats the big deal? Are you going to permanently ban me from the mall if I don't? I didn't hassle him though, in 3 days the poor guy doesn't have a job.

When I was a kid Mom would drop me off at Landmark to buy some clothes or whatever and she gave me the fabulous "Washington Shopping plate" I had the blue plastic version but how many of you remember the metal one, that's really old school. They gave you a little sleeve to carry it in because it would get that mimeograph ink/ chemical on it.

@doodad...very cool. I remember the blue one my Mom had...never saw the other one. Thanks!

Here is a spot I know we all wish was still around. Pro tip from back in the day....only start out w/ crab legs and steamed shrimp (w/ Beer and Puppies) THEN move to fried items at the end when you are so full you can't get up.

I still have my Mother's old metal one from when my parents lived in Silver Spring, before moving to VA.

Highland View on Rt. 7
This used to be the "Mansion On The Hill" when I was growing up.
We would turn off of Shreve Road heading west, and it was sitting up on the hill off to the left.
It's still there, but it's surrounded by McMansions that dwarf it now.

I did it so that we didn't have to see another picture like the one at the top of the last page.
I thought that this picture would a bit more welcome.

Highland View, built in about 1870.
My picture from Oct. 2009. Same side, different angle.
The white house is Highland, the beige is a whole different house. Built SO CLOSE to it.
Surrounded by McMansions.
I wonder if they will still be standing in 140 years.

One more. Closeup of the roof.
Notice the door at the top, so someone can climb up and have a stroll on the rooftop. This is called a "Widow's Walk".
I have read some stories from people that have lived here, of them doing exactly that.

Hey Sleepy, I can't count how many times we tried to put Chesapeake seafood house out of business. LOL! I remember towards the end you could get fried frog legs that were pretty good. I don't really care for all you can eat places today but Chesapeake seafood house was the best. Look at this prices.

I sent Cary a message. Little kids desperate for attention do that stuff every now and then. Cary will remove it and block their IP's later this week.
