Sorry first time posting, last post directed towards Dave Henery. You posted a picture a while back, a Yeonas ad for Glencourse Lane in Reston. I'd love to get a clean version if you could email to me or send me the source. Thanks!

Annandale Burger King old Gino's. A 1970's image of a puzzle I found online vs. the current Burger King. I don't think the puzzle is the exact same location but the building is the same. Back when Gino's carried KFC in addition to their own burgers. Anyone remember when the big KFC bucket on the sign used to rotate at some locations? How come signs don't spin anymore?? I remember when most gas stations and banks all had mechanical spinning signs. During a thunderstorm the wind would make them spin faster than normal. I haven't seen any spinning signs in the DC area in over 20+ years.

I went to that Gino's as a kid. Remember how every restaurant had a ash try on the table and a cigarette machine up front? Back then it was considered unreasonable to expect a smoke free environment anywhere.

Cool...just where is that?

What is there today?

So, probably the buyer used it as a farm for maybe 25 years, then sold to residential developer?

Which development?

Man, northern Virginia changed after WWII...heck, the world did, of course. But I wonder how northern Virginia would be different if no WWII.

No pentagon, no massive housing developments to house workers, no massive influx of government/military to "support" cold war efforts for the next 40 years...

Then, fewer tech companies here (remember, no Pentagon and related military complex here to "sell" to...) so, Reston/Toll Road and Tysons way different...

Eisenhower was so impressed with Germany's autobahn, he used that as the model for the interstate system, which had a secondary purpose...to be used in time of war to move equipment easily...so no beltway, 395, etc...

Not the same location, which was Topps prior to Ginos.
(You can tell because of the empty field in the puzzle.)

Virginia square, Arlington. Looks like a color slide rather than a print. I wonder how many folks have a big box of color slides from the old days in a box in the basement. That stuff is like buried treasure to me.

This was the A&P on Fairfax Blvd.across from Fairfax HS, at the time (now Paul VI).

What kind of car is that black car with the four headlights? It looks scary-cool.
Why did so many older cars have four headlights anyway?

I believe it is a Dodge Senaca. The Quad headlights started in 1957, but only in some states. 1958 had all states approved. The canted headlights were the rage...see photo...1959 Buick. I would date the A & P shot @1963.

The black car is a 1961 Dodge Polara. 4 headlights were side by side as seen in the picture, or stacked.

Styling and horsepower were key back then.

Was the Plymouth Fury the sister car to the Polara? Kind of like the Dodge dart and Plymouth Valiant were sisters?

Thanks for the info BTW.

This is by far the coolest topic on Fairfax underground and everyone who posts here regularly is really nice and polite to the other posters. Is that a 1960 Pontiac Catalina 2-Door with a kid hanging out the window?

It may be interesting to note that there are two Volkswagen buses of the same color, a Triumph, a Porsche and a VW Bug in this picture.

Yes that is a 1960 Pontiac, but I cannot tell if it is a Catalina or a Bonneville.

The Catalina was the entry level model, and the Bonneville the same car but with more options. Much like the difference between a Chevrolet Impala and the Biscayne.

@causeican....Good guess on the Catalina, The Bonneville/Ventura/Starchief were more distinctive, As 426MW indicated. BTW, that photo is @1966, not 1958 :)

Not a blind guess. I googled “1960 dodge tail lights” looking for two small round ones. This is the one I found.

Great 7-Corners photo Fran Conia.

Other lower level stores that I remember were the S&W Cafeteria (inside near Garfinkles) and Brentano's Bookstore (one of the outside box stores more or less opposite Woolworths). I used to buy my Cliff Notes at Brentano's so I could answer all of those essay questions in high school English class. LOL

On the upper level they had a Hahn Shoes (outside box store near Woodies) and a music store and a Casual Corner woman's shop on the inside down towards Garfinkles. Can't recall the name of the music store but I took guitar lessons there for about a year in the late 60s.

Peoples' Drug was already mentioned. Both Peoples and Woolworth occupied inside spaces on both levels. Woolworth's had an escalator so you could go between both levels of the store. I don't remember if Peoples had an escalator or not.

On the lower level, does anyone remember the names of the stores in the two free-standing buildings closest to Rt. 50?

There was a Chinese restaurant and a furniture store, I think. The one in the white building. I can’t remember the name of that furniture maker at the moment but it was quality.

As a kid my friends and I would walk in the summer heat to Peoples drug and order cokes, that's it , just a soft drink for each of us. That would piss off the waitresses there because they knew we were going to act obnoxiously and leave a very small tip. Nothing like an ice cold coke in a big glass on a hot day!

Its 7-Corners. The Woodies at Landmark was on the side with the slanting roof like the one at Tyson's Corner. The Hecht Company was at the end of the walkway at Landmark and Landmark didn't have all that nice brick for the sidewalk.

In the opening layout, the out buildings were a Supermarket and an Auto supply Store...which one later became a furniture store...not Woodies. I think was Fair Lane or Food Lane?

Sleepy is right about the grocery store, Food Lane sounds familiar to me. I think after that it was like Woodies furniture dept. then it was some other kind of furniture store. It was even a gym before it was torn down. I'm pretty sure the auto center was Western Auto. My neighbor would go there a lot and I would ride along. Anyone remember Harmony Hut? It was like a music store. After the auto center closed they had a restaurant on one end and Harmony Hut on the other. They even had a Fuddruckers in the building at one time.

Totally forgot about Harmony Hut, DH. Also on the lower level, kinda across from the Cafeteria (which at a later date became The Magic Pan (?)...) was a cool Tobacco/Smoke shop. I bought my wife an engraved Colibri laser beam lighter for @ 100.00 one Xmas in the mid 80's....it got ripped off @ a wedding reception @ the Watergate...DAMN! Bought her another she still has...never worked as well. A Kitchen Bazaar came into play in it's later years also, and a Hickory Farms on the upper level. Sorry I am rambling...stuff keeps coming back :)

You inspired me to look through my old slides - lifetime resident. Unfortunately, my folks never took day-to-day photos, so they are mostly vacation pictures and family members in the house. Lost opportunity.

Got a good photo of the family celebrating a game-winning Mark Moseley field goal.

In broad terms it is pretty easy to date. Fischer's moved to the stand-alone location in the the '80s. Then into the final strip-mall location sometime in the '90s. (Stand-alone became MJ Designs.)

I forget whether they had moved yet when I walked over during the Veteran's Day 1985 blizzard to but a dryer electrical cord.

Sleepy Holla - the supermarket in the outlot of 7-Corners could have been either a Food Lane or a Food Fair. They were competitors at the time. Food Lane was a small family run operation with less than 10 stores at it's peak when it was acquired by Grand Union. Food Fair was a powerhouse out of Philadelphia that once had many branches in the DC area. I remember the exact building that you are speaking of but I can't remember the tenant.

Yeah, NFW you'd be seen in it at the time.

I bought one long after to use as a beater. $100 in perfect shape. It was a cool old car. Throw the surfboards, fishing gear, tools, or whatever in the back. Sleep in it when we'd go camping. Whole interior was vinyl so I'd just open all the doors and hose it out when it got dirty. lol

Those old station wagons were great used car deals. Most all were family-owned, rarely driven hard, usually well maintained, and you could pick them up for nothing.

The People's Drug at Woodlawn Shopping Center on Rt 1 near MV had a soda fountain in the early '70s. We went there often right after Church. The whole shopping center is in the middle of a ghetto, now with many vacancies.

I suspect this photo was taken in the fall of 1968. The gentleman is sitting in a 1968 or 1969 Corvette Stingray.

The clue on this photo is on the theatre marquee - "Hot Millions" which opened on September 19, 1968. It starred Peter Ustinov as the marquee states.

The Patton Motor Lodge was at the corner of Stafford Drive and Fairfax BLVD.

The picture of the 2 Corvettes was taken at the Jim McKay used car lot - The new car showroom is on University Drive. It opened in 1956

At one time their used car dealership was located across Fairfax Blvd and closer to 123. Not sure whether the new car dealership was also there as well.

Dick Keller moved to a location outside of Fredericksburg, but I believe it closed down.

Sinclair was taken over by Atlantic Richfield in 1969, and the Sinclair stations east of the Mississippi changed to ARCO.

There are Sinclair stations out west, and the company is based out of Salt Lake City. I will let you research Sinclair Oil for the entire story.

That pic is at the FX Co courthouse archives on a wall somewhere. They have a lot of old pics. The view is taken about 1958, and is just about the spot where the Beltway snipers were sitting, truck toward the Home Depot parking garage where Malvo shot and killed Linda Franklin.

Before that even happened I saw the pic and "Adored" the 55 gal oil drum concrete form..that held up the parking lot light, and I took a pic of it. LOL as It was Still there bout 2000..From the exact same view. And the Beauty is still there today!!

You take a 55 gal oil drum, cut it in half long ways top and bottom removed and put a wire rope binder round it, then pour in the cement , let it dry remove the binder and the oil drum..DUH!! And You have a beautiful object to display in your front yard with your spotlight on it, with some scalloped tires put round it painted white!!

Cement??? If you used cement it would not last 3 months. You got to use concrete.

the inside of the form/barrel needs to be coated with a concrete anti stick agent that will enable the form to be removed after the concrete has properly set

It does look remarkably like Columbia Pike in Annandale, right down to the Safeway, school, firehouse, Baptist Church. But the scale and spacing and terrain is just slightly wrong. The biggest hint is the road alignment with the Safeway. See how putative Braddock/Maple runs into the middle of the storefront? That road was never that far east.

I've lived a few blocks from that intersection since 1961 and while it strongly evokes Annandale, I don't think that's it.

The reason for having 4 headlights is that it is easier to have single filament high beam bulbs and single filament low beam bulbs. When you try to put both filaments in the same bulb, it takes a much more complex reflector to properly aim each lighting level.
