I've had FIOS for roughly 3 years now and I absolutely love it. Internet is fast as fuck, 45 down/35 up, HD looks great. I've never had any issues with my service at any of my locations. However, I do use my own router and not that piece of shit they provide. One thing to make certain is to use the ethernet port from the ONT rather than coax. But yes, I can agree the customer service is terrible.
