Just to pick one flower out of this field: Mike, Robb and Oscar have all alluded to Mike's daughter's "activities" at college. Specifically when she moved into a single room (or her roommate moved out) and also regarding the familiarity she had with some sports team. Does that mean they are all being investigated by the FBI and that we should expect charges to be filed any day now? You are totally correct. Any Freshman English major would know that. In transformational grammar we would look at this statement as we would look at ebonics: What was going on in the head? Ebonics follows certain rules that are not ignorant. In this case, we have a blatant mistake. Why? Well, not because the poster did not know that multiple subjects are followed by 'are' instead of 'is.' So why was that written that way?

That is where a linguist makes decisions. The writer is not focussed on emails, but on the President. The President is his main point of emphasis. Emails ARE, President IS. THAT is the sort of analysis that is made by forensic linguists. The writer wants to emphasize the role of President of the US. --A simple mistake that cannot be understood as ignorance of the language.

To a linguist, even blatant mistakes in standard English are not necessarily signs of ignorance of the language or of low intelligence. A person can be drunk. A person can be following region rules.... A person can be tired. It is of note that I did not care to re-read my post.

But what I CAN tell you is that you are being profiled. Are you comfortable with that?

I am TOTALLY entertained. The work he's putting in, fighting against 20 by himself, the sheer will to just keep at it no matter how ridiculous and out of control it gets.
