Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I pulled it out and was going to cut it down and add some appropriate sad music, but, I think it is actually the type of thing we have been wanting out of the show, so if anyone wants to listen to just this part, here it is. It is about 8 minutes.
I just remembered what may have brought it up on the show. During the opening, they tried to question the interns about what they knew about the guys and one of the last questions by Oscar was "When Mike was drinking, what was his favorite drink?". The questions were being made up on they fly so this probably brought it out enough for Mike to talk about it.
My takeaway from Mike's visit to Urgent Care: his big complaint was that the receptionist didn't smile enough. Robb went out on a limb and agreed with him.
Shouldn't the emphasis be on Jr's treatment? The King could care less about the receptionist's attitude. His nascent sense of entitlement will take years to develop. All he cares about now is eating, pooping, and feeling better. He has decades of complaining ahead of him, and a whole world of people who won't live up to his expectations. And he will be tutored by the master.
My wife does medical billing. She says receptionists get abused routinely by people demanding priority because they are sick or injured. News flash: it's a fuckiing urgent care center; EVERYONE is sick or injured!
If the receptionist had flashed a big smile at Mike, he would have said, "wipe that phony grin off your face; my kid is sick, and you're telling me I have to fill out paperwork!"
BTW, a lot of these people are making $12-14 an hour. So there's a high burnout rate and lots of churn.
If Mike would start paying higher premiums, maybe these centers could attract happier receptionists. Because when your kid is sick, what is more important than a great customer experience for the parents?
Cary: Congrats to Mike, and his far better half, Carla, with the help of Michael, Jr., on his public acknowledgement of his first steps toward recovery.

I am actually impressed with Mike's prolonged (for him) abstinence from alcohol, and for his on-air admission, however offhand it was. However, it seems that alcoholism may just be a manifestation of an even more serious problem with his personality. Can he continue to change for the better? Will it make the show any better? I hope he will continue to share these things. It can only help his listenership, IMO.
I just realized I need to take a sabbatical from the show. As others have already stated on this thread, I'm finding Mike's nonstop negativity about his fairly mundane existence to be contagious. I listen to the show and just get pissed off at all the crap he says. I hate Robb correcting Oscar's grammar. I wish Oscar would call Mike out on more of his bullshit. I hate the way they treat their interns. If ball busting is one way, it's just bullying.
The best part of TMOS is this thread. I just wish Mike had the balls to devote a weekly segment to reading the Top Ten comments posted on this forum. I think he would be pleasantly surprised by the response. And he might actually grow from the experience.
I am relieved that Mike has finally seen that stories of blackouts and puking and high school drunkenness are really not very funny. I'm relieved that he is seeing that booze is responsible for most of what he doesn't like about his life. I'm happy now that he is 55 to realize that it is possible to socialize without being smashed.
The show will turn around as he wakes up. Meanwhile, he should talk about me.

I don't think booze made Mike a horrible human being. I think Mike is a horrible human being and the booze only amplified it. Even if Mike stays off the sauce, I don't think his marriage will survive his petty, narcistic and abusive behavior. Having a spouse who rages every time a receptionist or waitress doesn't meet his unrealistic expectations is bound to get very, very old.

Apparently he did something lower than throwing the suitcase at his pregnant wife...Probably involved his new born son....Something so bad, he won't bring it up....
When's the pamphlet signing at Jimmy's? I thought it was this weekend, but in the failcast's standard promotional procedure, I can't find any mention of it on the site or facebook page. Carla, you've got to be concerned about the recent sobriety surviving this visit.

Why? He's still a negligent father/husband who acts like a child and always makes it about him....It's actually harder to excuse his horrible behavior if you can't blame it on the booze no?
He misses it. Oscar saying if didn't define you and hack sayings about new chapters etc. What garbage. Plus the man is a liar so who knows if any of this is real.

We have heard countless stories (not too exaggerated, it seems, given the corroboration we also have heard) of Mike's frequent awful behavior in his (sober) day-to-day interactions with almost everyone he experiences. For him to acknowledge how being drunk made him a mean, nasty person to others, can we imagine how awful he was in those booze-fueled encounters? Thanks to Carla, I imagine, for holding up a mirror to him.

And you notice how helper Spewak piped in with the comment that LFF's drinking was a part of his "on-air persona?" Yeesh.
My prediction is that the putrid Cake and Cookies will very quickly become just a series of drunken doggie voices. It's almost there already. Now that booze references and stories will likely become verboten on TMOS, Spewak will have to save them for C&C. Problem is that he, unlike LFF, usually drinks alone at home, watching old movies in his basement until he nods off. Not much material for podcast segment(s) there.
Lack of material, however, hasn't stopped him and Katie so far. They beat on, like boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

My guess it involved overserved Mike's reaction to Michael, Jr. once painfully latching on to the closest thing to him -- one of Mike's ear lobes.

You are correct...Mike is just as horrible and negligent a person stone sober...That would be a wake up call if I were Carla
Yes, much like Rob's racism is "just a hilarious comedy bit"....except HBS is into "nazis are sooooo funny" too and he doesn't have a pretend radio show...

whatever it was, we can all agree that it was the baby's fault...it certainly wasn't Mike's
Maybe Carla finally realized normal moms are able to leave their kid with their spouses for a few hours to go to work or grocery shop without fear of returning home to find their spouse passed out and the kid at the bottom of a flight of stairs. Consider Carla's actions as "child-proofing" Mike.

Neither my wife nor am I ashamed of pics of her. She is 60. I think she looks pretty good for her age. 30 years ago she could have made Penthouse, easy.
No, Mike, no WV relatives. She's from Texas.
Where are the photos of me and my race bikes? Do I need to post them? I will. I love the attention. MORE PICS!!!!!!
Where is the photo of me and Conan? Don't crop them you pussies. I will gladly supply a new photo with every pic. I like to get hits on them. They go up on Google images with more hits.
Mike FINALLY publicly admits to his alcoholism and his efforts to get clean, serious talk, and it's constant interruptions and shtick from Robb and attempts to minimalist/downplay from Oscar. It's like guys if there was ever a time to just shut the fuck up and listen, now is that time. Nope - not those two clowns.
If Enzo really didn't have an issue with the posting of personal pictures, he would post the bike photos himself. What's your supposed end game, Enzo? Acting like it doesn't bother you? Mike ignored this thread for six years, yet here it is.
i cringe when Mike and his team of yokels talk politics or current events. because they're clueless! they get basic facts wrong and jabber on about things they know very little about. i don't pretend to know a lot about things myself.. but i read the papers, listen to the news. i know enough to know that most of the time these guys get the basic facts wrong or jumbled. And then they draw misguided conclusions from their false "facts" and go on and on about them. omg. i haate when they do that. why don't they just avoid talking about things they know so little about.
Enzo business: I think she looks like a really nice person, and it's just one picture but her smile at Enzo says they have a happy relationship.
Alcoholism: Mike addressing being an alcoholic without it being a "ha ha, Irish flu" or "overserved" joke is one of the biggest things that's ever happened on the show, along with Kara and Oscar, and Buzz leaving (twice). I hope he's in a program with people who support him. This could be the end of the Big Duffs, and the restaurant fights, and the missed shows, and who knows how much stress on his relationship. Carla's a great influence on him between encouraging him to exercise and diet and confront the alcoholism. You know she loves him and cares about the relationship, or she wouldn't be working so hard for him and fighting for him. And heck, unless he replaces it with food, he'll probably start passively losing weight, too.
Great Segue: On Friday's DGS, Don said he's down to 236 after almost hitting 300 a year ago, just by changing his diet and eating responsibly. No plan, per se, just taking care of himself.

You've seen the recent screen caps Dave...Does it look like he has lost any weight in his 4 and a half month journey into sobriety?
Let's face it, Mike has more than a few listeners. Some of those listeners are likely addicts/alcoholics not yet in treatment and could benefit from hearing the real, full story behind Mike's road to recovery (up to this point). Mike, I know you read this thread, so maybe you'd consider opening up and inspiring some of your listeners to take the big first step. Do some real 12th-step work. You have the floor, use it so that others may benefit from your struggles.

I agree but of course Spewak was the worst offender. I think Oscar would have had a serious discussion about it with LFF if Headd wasn't there. Obviously Headd was very uncomfortable with the conversation because he's got his own drinking issues. (He has referred to his vast alcohol inventory as being there for "when we have people over." Who the hell does he have over?) Therefore, he needed to constantly throw his shitty quips in. Do you think the ever-expanding Spewak felt more than a bit uneasy when Oscar said to LFF "and it's better for your health"?
Oh and to Carla, having Mike open up to his listeners might add another level of accountability to his continuing efforts to stay sober. Something to think about.
Mike, do what you're comfortable with. I just figured since you took the time to open up on the show, and Robb and Oscar basically sidelined a conversation that you must have weighed heavily before deciding to have, you should get done honest, non-cackling hyena feedback.

No, I really don't see a difference. However, if he has lost 18 pounds at 1 per week (I'm assuming he hasn't changed his diet otherwise) out of ~350, would we be able to tell?
I really don't know. I'm just hoping for the best.
On some level it has to occur to Rob that Carla sees him as the problem, right? Mike spent 90% of his drinking time with Rob. Mike didn't see Jimmy every day and I don't think Oscar is alcohol dependent like Rob. Carla sold their house for a loss and moved Mike as far away from Rob as possible. It has to occur to Rob that Carla sees him as a major problem.

I don't think Mike drinks that much with Robb. He did most of his drinking at Jimmy's and/or out with Officer Jerky or other friends. Mike and Robb never really socialized outside work. They would certainly *commiserate* about their drinking, although I can't think of any stories where Robb "problem drank" (minus Cake and Cookies, below). He has the equivalent of 4-6 drinks a night most nights, I think (not that big a deal for someone his size), but he's never missed work from drinking and I don't *think* it's caused any domestic problems, either. Robb and Katie's drinking together is the worst for him I think, but that's because it's become a buddy thing for them.
Oscar binge drinks socially which, doctors and mommies aside, seems relatively normal. It's gotten him in minor trouble a couple times, but he no problem holding down work or maintaining relationships.
Robb is definitely an enabler, however, because he thinks he's being a friend or bringing the funny when he downplays or normalizes Mike's abuse.

Maybe Rob knows something Mike is not telling his wife or audience.
It's no mistake Carla made Mike go home a day early. If Mike ends up on a trip to NoVA without her, the local Days Inn will see flying pork chops and suitcases. My greatest respect is for Carla in this situation. That said, she's going to have to play the part of "the bitch" for the next 18 years. She may have it in her, but that's a lot to ask of anyone. Especially when the person you are trying to help is incapable of appreciating why it's being done.

Not to pick on you, but it amazing to me that college graduates think they are getting accurate information from the papers, TV and press. Does it ever occur to anyone that MUCH information is secret????? Really, there is no such thing as a full report "fair and balanced" and all that shit. If you read a story, it is only a partial picture. NO ONE knows what is going on in secret. Secret agreements, secret movement of money, secret deals, secret fake troops, false flag ops, spies, agents posing as journalists, disinformation.....it goes on and on. Why argue about shit in the papers like you know anything??

Can't be worth it. So LFF isn't an angry drunk. For the time being. Even if it lasts, how much happier is Junior's childhood really going to be if his father resents the hell out of his mother? But there is a third option. Carla takes the boy and go back to VA. Right now, I think that is the way it will eventually all end.
I can't understand why you guys keep engaging Elmo. Just ignoring him and he will go away. i have not acknowledged that weirdo in pages. I really hesitated doing so now but it just seems like you guys won't stop with him and so he just keeps posting. He will get bored and leave if you just don't bother even mentioning his name. Mike's apparent sobriety has survived Valentines Day (OK, not that hard), St. Patrick's Day (for him, wow), the move to FL, Memorial Day, and a return to JOTT. Next up: his birthday, then Jr.'s.
Oh, and Father's Day (prob why he was so unhappy that day) and the upcoming Maine trip -- with hard drinkers Spewak and Santana (get back, Satan!) -- the hardest test of all. As with the return to DC last month, Carla will be there to enforce.
This was the type of thing Mr. Spewack would say. The alcohol did define him to some not insignificant extent, based on everything he's told us seriously and in jest. People don't quit drinking for the reasons he described of alcohol didn't define them.
I just don't understand supporting (or kissing up to) someone by telling them things that seem false.
Oscar isn't usually a culprit, but he certainly has done it on both TMOS and BOAD. He's told Chad that he isn't racist, for crying out loud. My friends know that I'm very supportive of them, but they also know that I'm not going to lie to make something sounds better.

Another thought: The regular fans must not have any memory, day to day.
For one, they can tolerate certain things and justify them like its a one time occurrence. Just amazing that they don't notice a preponderance of evidence when it comes to anything TMOS.
Also, didn't we know that he quit drinking FROM LISTENING TO THE SHOW? There was a soft announcement, with periodical updates sprinkled in. I don't respect the typical fan very much, but their cluelessness here is astounding.
Thanks for bringing up this point relating to the Constitution and federal courts. Is that some sort of conspiracy far-right (or far-left??? It's so odd it could go to any extreme) beliefs. You certainly can claim constitutional defenses in federal court.

Mike has taken the "it's all about me" tour back to DC, Arlington Cemetery to be exact. I espescially like the quick contradiction of everyone should go, but it's not for tourists aspect.

I agree with Mike re. the behavior of tourists in DC in the summer. In our stores, we often get obese tourists, inexplicably. I guess they don't have such big furniture stores in Gnaw Bone, Indiana. They come in, plop down on our chairs, which breaks them, and they run away.

Yes, but do you invite them in, ask them to sit down, then yell at them after?

You said all that shit before, Champ. Your father's and brothers' accomplishments, even if real, are not yours. And I figured it out: "ran with Jesse Owens" is code "chased a black guy".

Wow! I didn't know people still got polio.

It's funny that you hear "love" and you immediately think about sucking dick.

Delusional Champ.
It's a good thing no one's offered a thousand quatloos for a picture of enzo's house, because that could land someone in FEDERAL COURT!
We know Enzo is a true Champ because he apparently feels the need to brag about his and his family's accomplishments to people he supposedly disdains. That's how Champs roll...in a pathetic exhibition to people who don't really care.

Fat Rob thought that the hours long distance truckers drive are completely unregulated. "They can drive 24 hours if they want." Now what kind of black op false flag is that that he bungles common knowledge, you stupid fuck?
p.s. still waiting to see your profile of me, Agent Cooper.
My mind is fully boggled. Fuckwaddle has made the executive decision that there will be no books for sale at the book signing. Perhaps because it is too difficult to sell books at a bar instead of a bookstore (the standard site for a booksigning).
Then he goes on to say "drunks" can stay late for "drunken karaoke." The judgementalism of the dry drunk.
Fat Drunk Baby talked a good game about his drinking, and Fat Rob and Oscar With One "R" took pains to say that his drinking had never affected the show.
Certainly not when he was too hungover to walk downstairs to do a one hour show.
Certainly not when he drunkenly challenged a guy who insulted him to a barfight and blew out his knee.
Certainly not when he ruined an appearance at the overpriced, overrated Quench by insisting that it suddenly become...wait for it America....drunken karaoke.
It's fair to say that the time he touched the guy's guitar didn't affect the show.
Good effort, especially if he hasn't relapsed since January, but it's only a matter of time. No wonder his daughters take refuge in the quality programming of the BBC.
Good to hear about his ex-wife's lupus. The public has a right to know. Keep sharing those details, FDB.

Some dream date this fat load is. Because who doesn't think it's fun to go to a cemetary? And if he really does "go often" it's just to sniff decaying jocks. Jeebus Christ, what a douche.
The location had nothing to do with the no books available policy at the signing. Through Oscarr's (I like that spelling) comments it's apparent they are self publishing through Amazon and would have to pay for any copies they wanted to have on hand. Even though they encourage it of their listeners, there is no way they would buy 10 copies each to have on hand to sell to random bar patrons and passers by.
