Well, the Whiffies may continue to carry on like chickens with their heads cut off, but what continues to carry on out here in the spectacular Sweet Spot is a run of sparkling if a little too chilly winter mornings. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident, and police were able to seize the suspect after he left the scene, according to local reports. This -- to be clear -- is not making America great at all. Quite the opposite, actually.

In other news, what might have been an exciting week of scuttlebutt from the MLB Winter Meetings has instead been a near-total dud of PR darkness, the big headline so far being a lack of any big headline. The Rule 5 Draft conference call is scheduled for noon today, so that may offer hungry fans some small bones to chew on. Otherwise, a lost season is being followed by a lost off-season, with no actual sign that the dopes at Rockefeller Center have any clue at all as to how to get the game going again. They were put to shame by the folks at NPB this past season, and with the added shame of having simply absolved all of the Astros' sign-stealing cheats, it's a murky path forward for MLB in any event.

Well, it was nice to see Bruce Springsteen still hanging in there on SNL last night. My brother also had a band that played the Jersey Shore back in the day, so we were brought in as way early adopters. Saw Bruce many times up in the NY/NJ area, and later on down here as well, memorably including a clear and beautiful night in the summer of 75 at the Carter-Barron Amphitheater up on 16th Street, Fifth row seats, center-right, and man, did they rock. The Boss and The Big Man really did put on quite the high-energy show back in those days, but I still liked the soft stuff too -- Sandy for sure and Wild Billy's too. That was just a wonderful time for music back then.

And of course it's still just a wonderful time for about anything out here in the stunning Sweet Spot, where far from the dusty nooks and cleaning closets of any Falls Church long term care facility, we wealthy retirees are again enjoying a fantastic December morning. It was 47 degrees when I got up, but we'll be spending nearly all of the afternoon somewhere in the low 60's. We'll be basking in boatloads of blazing sunshine all that time as well, with just some light breezes and close to no chance of rain beyond the brief pre-dawn sprinkles we already received. Tough to beat that sort of thing at this time of year.

Tough not to laugh now at the faded and foolish President Ding Dong either, as the Great Horse's Ass has had his hat handed to him for what looks now to be one final time. In other news, local pundits seem to have realized now that the Nats are not going to be throwing any big bucks at DJ Lemahieu, but they can't seem to walk away from the Kyle Schwarber idea, as bad as that is. Meanwhile, rumors are that ANA is moving in on Kurt Suzuki now that James McCann is off the board. They like their guy, Max Stassi, but he's coming off hip surgery, so a 37-year old with Suzuki's tools, make up, and pedigree may well be of interest to them. And speaking of 37-year old ex-Nats, Jerry Blevins has signed with the Mets. He couldn't make it with SF last year, but had a pretty good run with NYM prior to that.

No good run at any time in the past fifty years is meanwhile the story for the poor folks in washed up old Falls Church City. A new threat is looming on the horizon though, as Atlantic Realty (not heard from since the dawn of the Great Recession) is now bringing a proposal to demolish pretty much the entire block defined by the worn-out nothing-burger of George Mason Square. Looks like details will be unveiled to some extent around mid-January, but early word is that another new grocery store will be included is these plans, along with a 15-story apartment tower, and a faddish woonerf inserted just opposite Mr. Brown's Park. Just what the Little City needs to revive itself. LOL!

Not even imagining any longer his own ability to carry on at this point is the deranged and soon to be discarded President Ding Dong. Even more disgraceful than the weather, the enfeebled Loser of the Year and his worse than enfeebled redneck followers will of course behave like babies the rest of the way (and likely thereafter), thereby greatly increasing the chances of random acts of violence and other threats to the long-established rule of law. These spoiled brat morons are only managing to make America a disgrace again. Dopes.

In other news, the Cleveland Indians have finally agreed to drop the 'Indians' handle after more than a century of use. The racist Chief Wahoo mascot got the axe some years ago, and now the whole kit and caboodle will be going away. Hopefully, something better then The Cleveland Baseball Team will be coming down the pike soon. My two cents would ride with the history of Spiders, but Rocks may be the secret leader, while other sensible names will no doubt also be considered by Forest City folks. The legalisms of trademark and licensing matters will need to be worked out at some point, but it is in any case a good day for moving into the 21st century. Welcome, Clevelanders.

Nothing wrong with the name of Falls Church City of course, but problems do tend to arise rather quickly after that. The ease of leaving the place has been improved of late though, with the recent opening of the extra eastbound lane on I-66 between 267 and Glebe Road. Completion of construction will be helpful to us on our periodic trips into DC, especially if baseball ever comes back.

And he starts the baseless bluster early today. That's what happens when he lacks the confidence and courage of his convictions to definitively stand behind what he has previously claimed.
