Not a McDonald's anymore. Closed several years ago.

I am pretty sure We had the Gran Torino and Chevy Nova in 1982 for Divers Ed. They looked a little like this one. I am not sure about the handles on one of these cars. They where LB cars, I took Behind the Wheel at Lee.

That middle pic is an American Motors product.

Probably a Hornet, but possibly a Matador.

In the summer of 1970 my mother took me to Edison HS for driver training, I needed it as I moved here in Mar 70 after leaving San Diego after aquiring 4 tickets from the CHP for riding dirt bikes with no license and driving a borrowed car off the road in Bonita Ca. thru a fence at 90mph + a wayward youth 15 , who was very close to being a ward of the State of California and almost slept at the CYA in San Diego. But moving here I chilled out considerable and avoided any "bootleg" driving and only went with my father with a learners permit.

So that summer I took driver training.. for me very laid back..as i was "experienced" and the fav vechicle they had . A VW Bug with a 4 speed stick. which I got into every chance I got. .. and I was a safe driver every after, now with over 1 million + miles of safe driving in over 43 + years in NOVA ..Only 1 ticket for a expired state inspection in 1974, Knocking on wood ...Right Now.. I did learn my lesson.

I learned on a Datsun 810 Stick prior to behind the wheel (Got in trouble when my parents went to Hawaii and I took my dads Fiat X19 to the school to practice on my own) so I had a longer wait for behind the wheel because of my parents not the cops. The Instructor was cool, we where doing burnouts and he said it was better then vs doing it on the road. LOL That was the 80's mentality not so paranoid.

Montgomery Ward was positioned at that location in 1993. The store closed the store in 1996.

There were identical payphones directly below, outside the Roy Rogers (Taco Laredo was down a few stores).

Anyways, called the first girl I ever called from those phones.

Could have been a Concord DL. Lake Braddock had one fall of '79.

Good catch. The Concord DL (which I had forgotten all about) replaced the Hornet for the 1978 model year.

Our Driver's Ed cars were mostly AMC Concords. I do recall there being an old Ford Grand Torino in the fleet, which was of course a total beater by the 80's - and that's saying a lot given that the 'newer' cars were AMC Concords!! AMC had already gone belly up by the time I hit drivers ed!

I'll never forget the day in '79 I skipped school at G.C. Marshall but managed to get there for Driver's Ed after school of course. I was sitting in the parking lot waiting for my turn in one of the Gran Torinos when my mother pulled up, rolled the window down, and yelled "You're in BIG trouble". Then she took off and I ended up walking home.

love these pictures maybe will upload if i can find any sometime.

---------------------------
HOWEVEVER. they tend to show alex annadale high development areas and only areas of SE NVA at their most developed points.

ie, annandale i hear, all those little old houses (very nice for their time) along 50. that area those houses were mostly army personel after the vietnam war / wars in that era. for a while anyway.

that's misrepresentative of the better part of fairfax, map wise

-----------------------------

MUCH of SE NVA was trees even until the early 90's. definitely early 80's The history photos migh let one think Manassass or Oakton Springfield long had shopping malls, condos, and etc.

NO WAY, UNTRUE. wasn't that long ago there wasn't much to vienna, springfield, oakton, or reston, sterling and hernon were trees, horses, farms mostly. and burke! even more undeveloped than that! chantilly didn't have a big shopping center it didn't have any shopping center until "recently" i'd say. springfield had very little development next to 495 a few small buildings.

chantilly had machine shops people made read machines in. there were some construction places to buy parts. manasses or sterling had pepsi plant (no big coca cola silos, must have been much later in time). someone sued the pepsi plant for "water problems" i hear - bottling went to another state or county much more modern that plant didn't even get a water filter. hmmm. anyway many small shops - nothing the free money or development of the DC area: money was tight you worked for what you had and had cash in your hand to get it.

especialy east north and south of chantilly: it was all trees and most housing was older: not even many housing developments

the "very old maps" of NVA showing that area are actually allot closer to the truth than the photos are in general: it was mostly trees in the 80's and part of the 90's

--------------------------
some photos are getting in as "history" (maybe jokes) that are not. Asians didn't even make SUV till somewhat recently: so those photos showing them besides foreign shops are obviously not fairfax history (yet).

and i remember the Anit's of chantilly sign going up (and what some people said). that ALSO isn't history. that wasn't built that long ago.

--------------------------
now that italian restraunt outside the courthouse with the unmistakable awning: that might actually get in as history already !

but where is tasty 29 and the silos that were there ? that goes first wouldn't you say ?

---------------------------
i don't go far back but aren't some of those "racial" photos from other states, like CA ? and were any of the signs people were holding edited they appear they may have been ?

-------------------------
sure there's been development but where did they get the money ? :) i'm pretty sure i know by now hmmm ?

Arg! I had to have behind the wheel at Marshall high in summer school back in 1981. They scheduled me for classroom behind the wheel in a timely manner and my high school, J.E.B. Stuart, but then they somehow screwed up and I ended up having to ride my bike from near Roundtree Park to 7 Corners then catch the Metro bus to Marshall every damn day for however long behind the wheel lasted. I remember they had at least 1 and I think more Gran Torinos back then.

We only had Montegos (basically same as Torinos) at Edison in the early 80s- looked pretty much like your picture except no red tape on the windows.

All the driver ed cars were automatic automatic at Edison by 1981. I'm surprised there were ever any stick shifts in the "fleet". I learned clutch -shift on a private pinto station wagon.

I'm not sure "behind the wheel" is even done on school grounds anymore.

Try to even find a pay phone in a mall now. Or anywhere for that matter. Brings up a discussion I was having with a co-worker. He says pay phone charges went to a quarter in 1984 when Ma Bell broke up. I said it was earlier because I remember the phones at Edison and Rose Hill costing a quarter in late 70s early 80s. Anybody remember when payphones went up to a quarter in NOVA?

I grew up in Springfield. The Shenandoah's Pride box was on our back porch. Milk man would come around back to deliver. The trash service also came to the back yard to empty trash cans. They would roll big plastic barrels around, hopping fences on occasion, and the take your trash out to the truck in the barrel. Think about that every time I haul my can to the street.

Didn't the Old Spaghetti Mill then become The mining Company or something like that? I can remember liking the Mining Company's mining decor - and chilled plates for the salad bar to boot!

Looks like a 70s something Dodge Monaco or Polara. GM car front right is also 70s - so I think the post title is off by 5 years +/-.

Great pics lbss82...I believe you are correct...either a 72 or 73 Monaco wagon. Here is a 72...I think the first year for hidden headlights on Dodges. I also love the Mickey D's shot...I had the exact wagon a few years back that is shown in the foreground...a 1963 Buick Special.

Can't be 1968, as the Ford pickup truck in the oic is a 1973-1975, based on the grille

I also spot an early 70s Camaro and 73ish Pontiac grille. Looks like a 74ish Grand Torino in the slow lane...

The TAXI cab is a plymouth, 1970 model. COol shot!

It appears in the picture that barricades have been erected on both inner and outer loops as if a construction project is about to begin, and there is some machinery on the side of the road in the background. That stretch of the beltway was originally 4 lanes, and IIRC was widened in the early to mid 1970s. I was thinking this picture might have been taken at the start of that project.

I used to live in falls church and I always wondered how those neighborhoods near loehmans where westmoreland is looked like back when. I've always imagined that they were built in the sixties, I imagine how simple it was back then and how it mustve felt for those families buying their first home and moving into there. Anyone live in that area back then or have any pictures to go with my imagination?

It was pre-"Jersey wall" era too.

They used to be those white and red wooden barricade things that they'd set up.

I remember going through that neighborhood one time on Christmas eve. Everyone had lunch bags with candles on them in front of their houses. That was probably in the mid 1960s and I'm guessing that neighborhood was at least ten years old then.

Anybody remember smudge pots? They looked like cannon balls with a wick sticking out the top. Fill 'em with kerosene, light 'em, and they'd burn all night.

They used them on the roadways before they were replaced by battery powered blinkers on sawhorses.

I wish I had stolen a few of them!

Funny because my wife and I were just talking about Shenandoah's Pride milk service last night. She bought a glass bottle of milk at I think "Mrs Greens"grocery yesterday. Out reminded Utes of the old milk service when e were kids in the 70s. I grew up in Ravensworth too on Queensberry and we all had the boxes for milk. She lived in Wakefield area and had them too. My kids were like what? They brought you milk? Huh? BTW the milk my wife bought was from Pa farms and was f'ing delicious. To expensive but what a difference from store milk.

Here is what I have come up with so far. It would appear that the "Meat" Bus was a meat packaging facility on the Northeast side of the intersection of Rt 7 and Rt 123. Here are some sites that mention it.

Memory is a fickle thing. I said Marshall HS in a previous note, but I meant Langley HS.

The Crystal Pistol was a real "bucket of blood." Diagonally across Rt. 7 was an old gas
station and welding shop that sat on an angle. This was when Rt. 7 was TWO lane.
Just to the west and back across 7 was the Meat Bus, a meat packing place.
They used an old bus as a store front.

The "Lodge" at Great Falls was the original GF&OD/W&OD Ry terminal. The trolleys made
a loop around it. The building was gone by 1965. November 9, 2008 at 6:25 PM

The northeast corner of the intersection of Routes 7 and 123 is
the original Tyson's Corner, so named for Tyson's Meat Locker
situated at that spot. Hard to believe, but until the late 1960's
there was nothing else for at least a mile in any direction from
there except farmland. Oh, and the Crystal Pistol, a blood-bucket
topless bar next to the meat locker. That's the place I always wondered about.

Nope. The Meat Bus was located on the north side of Leesburg Pike between the Dulles Airport Road and Lewinsville Rd. It was there at least until the late 1960s. I'm not sure if it was still open that long. Never did know anybody who stopped there.

I remember them being used when Braddock road was being widened from two lanes to four lanes. I think that was early 70s. Back then the highway construction crews would pile up the trees they had removed and hose them down with diesel fuel or kerosene then set them on fire by the side of the road. Imagine the public outrage if trees were disposed of in that manner today!

Thanks Sleepy. One of our neighbors had one of those cars when I was a kid and we thought those headlights were so cool.

I grew up a bit to the north and there was a street that was much like an the landing area of a ski-jump. Long, long incline going down, then a flat, and then a short incline up on which to stop. When it snowed, the police would put a sawhorse and two smudge pots at either end of the street and kids from all over would come to sled on it. It was great. Except for the walk back up to the top of the hill.

We also used to just rake all the leaves to the curb and set them on fire. That's what everybody did. The smell in the Fall was just wonderful!

This photo was taken 1973-1974. The Beltway was widened the first time in the early 70's. Look at the photos 1973 Oldsmobile Omega followed by the rest.

Never knew what those things were called but I remember them being on my street as a kid. If I recall they would sit the smudge pots on top of "real" barrels...you know....metal ones and not the plastic things that imitate barrels.

Anyone remember when Mason had it's computer science classes at the Paul VI building? And before that it was Fairfax high school. Back in those days each computer was the size of a modern Pepsi machine.

I'd bet this was part of the series of pictures shot of the Confederate works at Centreville shortly after Johnston retreated to below the Rappahannock in early 1862. That would have been months after the First Battle of Manassas/Bull Run, and months before the Second Battle.

The ticket prices too.

I remember when the standard pricing tiers for shows around here, even for the biggest name bands, were $4.50 for the cheap seats, $5.50 standard, and $6.50 if you wanted to splurge for floor/center.

I went to at least one of those Alice Cooper shows. Seems like he played there several times.

Hey Cary, would it be too much to ask for there to be a date/timestamp on the "Quoted" messages? I really get sick and tired of having to go back and figure out what the fuck someone is referring to. Some threads like "Old pictures of Fairfax county" with 29 pages become cumbersome to follow without a time reference.

It just sums it all up...everthings turned into shit...ive always been a firm believer on how theres aways been a positive and a negative, but...the old days just seem much more stable in a sense...things were nice, as if I were traveling in NC or something. I appreciate all of this that everyone has contributed to this forum. I am 29 and I remember traveling to Emerald Isle, NC when I was younger with the family. I cannot imagine what would happen to those old places and towns I remember, to change so drastically? Its invitable I know but this forum has really touched base here. Thank you folks!

All I can say is this forum is awesome. I just spent the past 4 hours having flashbacks. I grew-up in FFX County (Clifton) and went Lanier Intermediate (1969 - 1970) then Robinson HS in 71. Back then Clifton was country living way before the days of the McMansions of today. Before then I lived in Falls Church and Annandale. Life was good back in the day. Still is, but in a different way...

A shot from Middleridge, the day of the 1973 tornado. I had just returned from Manassas airport and found a Fairfax County police car blocking the entrance to Paynes Church road. After telling the officer I lived in the development, he let me in. I drove around and saw and photographed this house, and a second house that had been lifted off of the basement and dropped in the back yard. I have a picture of that house somewhere....

Yeah that looks about right. As I remember that Gulf station was less than a hundred yards from the ramp to the beltway going towards the wilson bridge. That Gulf was there into the early 80s.
