OMG! I remember this, my parents had a house at Lake Barcroft on Beachway Drive and we were on our way to Giant Food across the street. We arrived just as the collapse happened, dust bellowed all over the place. Story was the floor joists holding the concrete flooring was removed too soon, Wow! Incredible pictures.

I believe this picture is Lee Highway just below Cherrydale before Lyon Village about where I66 crosses over Lee Highway now.

I grew up in Arlington and recall this area before Lee Highway was widened and all the properties were purchased and condemend for I66.

This picture is from the 3rd page. Was driving 395 today and see that they are tearing down the short building on the left. It's been boarded up for as long as I can remember and looked like a car dealership was using the parking lot.

That building was originally Washington Gas HQ, before it moved to Industrial Rd in Springfield.

Bob Rosenthal bought it and used it for new car get-ready as well as new Chevrolet receiving and storage. I worked there '70-'72. I believe they stored cars there until very recently.

I remember the RR crossing on Shirley Highway (WAY before they called it I-395). Can you imagine the daily carnage if it was still there with today's idiot drivers?

Yes! Those are the animals I remember from a million years ago. We used to drive out to Reston/Great Falls where Dad was working on building new houses and loved to see those animals on the side of the building. I couldn't believe how far he had to drive to get to work.

Of course, we weren't really thinking about what was going on with the animals in the meat locker building. Yikes!

Those do look like old vending machines from the 50s and 60s.

@WingNut-The W&OD crossed the beltway at approximately the same location as the current bike path, just north of I-66. In those days I-66 only ran west of the beltway. You are probably correct on the location of #2. Looking at #1 though I am wondering if this is actually WB Rt. 7. Unfortunately there isn't quite enough there for me to tell.

I-66 does occupy the former W&OD ROW in the Lee Highway picture. I-66 is largely built on the W&OD ROW from Rosslyn until Ballston. From Ballston to eastern Falls Church it follows the line of the former Washington, Arlington & Falls Church trolley.

Where did you watch the '76 fireworks? We went to a party in Rosslyn and then watched from the Marine Corps Memorial.

Man...I can't say how many times I was in there as a kid drooling over one of the mini bikes that they used to sell in there, but I never got one. A drug store that sold pretty much anything...they were like the Amazon of their day.

My grandparents lived in Parkfairfax, an apt. complex to the right of the northbound lanes, and I recall seeing this scene quite often as a kid, when it wasn't 395 but Shirley highway. I remember that a railroad guy would walk out in front of the train swinging a red lantern as it started across (no gates), and then he'd jump back on the engine. The train would then throttle up and move fairly quickly afterwards.

Imagine the lifespan of that guy today, starting out against 395 traffic.

The train track ran next to Four Mile Run. You can't see it in the picture, but the train went over a bridge that formed a tunnel right at that location, because it was crossing from one side to the other of Four Mile Run. It was in that tunnel that I, as a lad of about seven and exploring with the neighborhood kids (a pastime that disappeared with the introduction of gaming systems), came across a couple in the altogether and hard at it. We screamed, they screamed, and took off clutching their clothes.

If memory serves, the job of explaining what we had seen fell to the father of a kid named Johnnie Austin. I remember to this day, nearly 60 years ago, how much he struggled to keep from laughing. Parents were different then.

Parc East? The high rise? Sorry, no, I don't know precisely. We used to play football and baseball in the field that was there before (that was when Soccer was something you did to your little sister). Both grandparents had departed this vale of tears by the early 70s, and I don't remember it being there then. But I dated a young lady who lived there in the late 70s, so maybe in the middle of the decade.

But if you're asking about Parkfairfax itself, that has an interesting history. It was built by Met Life, the insurance company. They started it just before the outbreak of WWII, stopped during the war (no men or materials for building) and started again just after, when housing in the DC area was at a premium.

If you look carefully, you see that on one street, Mt. Eagle, the units are more ornate. They were built before the war. The rest are plainer, because of all the shortages after the war. Kind of like the GI Bill house in FFX county I grew up in.

That is the same station and has been owned by the same family for over 50 years. I bought gas there back in the late 60's when I first got my license. It was remodeled sometime back, and what is shown is what it looks like now. This a fairly recent photo.

Sunday April Fools day 1973 and 5 minutes after it hit I was in the shopping center on the Dart Drug side and thought it was a gas explosion. Alarms ringing pieces of roof and debris every where then I saw the Safeway with the storefront off and shuddered as people were in there. I headed that way as Firefighters arrived from Annandale Ossin Hall station 1 1/2 mile down the road.

Then walking round I saw the Commonwealth Christian School bus in the ABC store. That was not lost on lots of us. The bus was parked near 236 and rolled across the lot.

Then across to Woodson where I graduated in 72. Telephone poles down and slanted, a big section of the gym roof tore off. More damage on the rear side.

Some kids were playing ball in the gym they were Ok as was everyone else a miracle and lucky it did not occur on the next day Monday.

Stores on the Dart Drug Side I remember. Firestone, Dart Drug (Now Chuck E Cheese) Raven gift Shop, Cleaners, Giant Music, 7-11,A womans clothes store, Pizza Kazano, another womans store, and a shoe store. then the corner with the Pool Hall, Then Wolfs mens store I think, Metro Camera, A hairstylist, and Safeway In the parking lot was Hot Shoppes Jr.

On the Other Side: Peoples Drug store with a lunch counter, I beleive a Sears store where you ordered things and picked them up, the ABC store, Phillipsborn womans clothes, The Ben Franklin store, Then in the corner Picket Theater, Headquarters a mens store Highs store Picket Inn and the Giant then the Goodyear tire store. In the parking lot was the National Bank of Fairfax.

Ye Ole Woodson Man now 60 remembers it all well. I was heading down Olley to the Dart Drug for spray paint for my dirt bike. and It was a terrific rain the worst I had seen in my short driving experience then. Then it was over and the sun came out about time I got to Olley and 236

The Arab oil embargo was imposed by OPEC against countries that had supported Israel in the Yom Kippur War of October 1973. Prominently included were Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The embargo itself lasted until March 1974, but the economic and trade mess that it unleashed lasted for a good deal longer than that.

@ April 1st 1973-This is stretching my memory. I thought Dart Drug along with a Dart related hardware store located in the Center where Shoppers is today.

@ lbss82-The Great Falls & Old Dominion later became the Washington & Old Dominion when they took over another line that is now the W&OD trail. The W&OD ran into financial trouble and abandoned the trolley line to Great Falls in the 1930s. I believe the land was turned over to the state, Fairfax & Arlington to settle back taxes. The old rail line to Great Falls is now Old Dominion Drive. BTW McLean VA is named after one of the founders of the GF&OD railroad.

In 1973 there was the Dart Drug only at Pickett. In 1974 the Fair City Mall was built. The Pickett Dart Drug closed and moved to Fair City mall across and down the street. Next to it was a Dart Home a new H. Haft business at the time. A hardware type store . They were yes where Shoppers Food is today and the Lifetime Gym. After Dart closed about 1976, the Dart Home became Evans for quite a while. I cant remember what went into the older Dart Drug at Pickett or at the Shoppers location either. Maybe 1985 or so It became Chuck E Cheese at Pickett.
At the time I remember the big dug out holes in the ground for some of the games. I laughed at the concept so corney and figured they would close in a year. That was almost 30 years ago. They have been laughing all the way to the bank and buying waterfront property.

Still hoping to see the elusive pants corral picture that somebody has got to have somewhere. Everybody I went to school with at West Springfield got their jeans and jean jackets at pants corral in fair city mall. I would drive over there in my 1969 Dodge Dart with my AM radio set to WHEEL 1310 and my radio shack 23 channel CB set to channel 19 and thought I was so cool. I was just another stupid kid but those were great times.

Just a bit south of the FFX Co line, but a common area most may recognize.

Vicinity of Groveton Cemetery, looking eastward from the ridge above New York Avenue. In the center of the picture the iron gates to NY Ave. are barely visible. Groveton Cemetery is just off the picture to the left on the opposite side of the road.

John McLean (owner of the Washington Post) named the GF&OD station at Chain Bridge Road after himself. His legacy was assured once the Post Office agreed to deliver area mail to the general store next to the McLean station, and no longer to facilities in either Lewinsville or Langley. The station also gained significance as the loading point for milk produced on the black-owned dairy farms of Chesterbrook for transport into the District. Several of the farmers became millionaires as the result of this trade. McLean's partner -- Sen. Stephen Elkins -- named the station at Old Georgetown Pike after himself, but Elkins never grew the way McLean did, so nobody remembers the Elkins name. Oops.

The history of the W&OD is much more complicated than that however, involving both the GF&OD trolley line and heavy rail lines that were eventually either owned or leased by both the W&OD Railway and later the W&OD Railroad. Neither of those had anything to do with the extensive trolley lines of the Washington, Arlington, & Falls Church Railway or the Washington, Alexandria, & Mount Vernon Railway which were eventually joined as the Washington-Virginia Railway, and entity that did not survive the Depression. The W&OD received federal help during WWII, but fell on hard times after the war as well. What was left of it was purchased by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway in 1956, and it was they who ultimately (and in two pieces) sold the W&OD right-of-way to the Virginia Department of Highways for use in constructing I-66.

Pants Corral Guy, how excited must you have been when the Pants Corral opened in WS, you know, the shopping center that had Mayer's Gifts, Iva Trice and the Hardee's in the parking lot?

Did you wear Levi's "Movin' On Jeans" (Levi's answer to skin tight disco pants) or maybe those cords called "Bush Jeans" (I think of these as full length OP shorts) or the very cool Rainbow 501's? The rainbows were blue jeans with varying indigo threads woven thru. Maybe you bought a corduroy jacket and pants to look spiffy for Homecoming '79? Your date wore a cowl-necked, clingy polyester dress with chunky-heeled sandals and suntan pantyhose and her hair was decorated with a sprig of baby's breath. Good times.

Now, I'm confused. Maybe that was Zippers? Or was it County Seat? I do remember shopping at a Pants Corral with my big brother is WS and fondly recall the saloon-style swinging door dressing rooms, shag carpet and maybe even fake fence posts? I am certain that in 1987, I was shopping in a women's clothing store that once housed the jean store and there remained those swinging saloon doors!

That is a great vid, Thanks!
Still would love to see a pic of the PC at Fair City mall. And yes you are pretty close on my age but I cant give out any personal info on this crazy forum.

I remember the dick heads at WSHS that thought it was cool to sneak up behind people and rip that tiny little red Levi's tag from the side of everyone's pocket. That little tag was really cool!

There is one less than 300 miles from Fairfax in Statesville NC. If you are a true JITB fan you will work it into your summer travel plans. I go to that area for my job 3 or 4 times a year and always end up at the BOX a few times each trip. BTW the taco bell breakfast menu is a total rip off of the JITB menu.

The Alexandria Hospital Medical Building across Kenmore Street uses the Steak and Ale parking lot for employee parking. I imagine they're paying the taxes on the lot.

The arched roof is still there, just hidden by the facade they erected. You can see the original shape on gogglemaps - http://bit.ly/RNp7WD

Also, this - http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/464382.html "The Safeway moved out to University Shopping Center (or whatever it is called) at the intersection of Old Lee Hwy and Main St in the mid 70s and Sloan's Furniture was the first store located in the "old" Safeway."

Then about 1980 it closed and went across the steet to where its at today in that center behinmd the 237 Mc D's. the Safeway at University became Faltzgraf for a good number of years. The old Picket Safeway became Drug Emporium and others until it became Total Wine at least 12 years back. It seems to me the Picket Safeway closed soon after the Apr 1st 73 tornado.

Along with the 28 flavors and actual milkshakes (though everyone made actual milkshakes at one time), the clam dinner and clam rolls were HoJo's claim to fame. Nothing like them before or since, I'm sorry to say.

There were 2 Safeway stores that closed in the 1973/1974 time area. The Safeway in the Picket shopping center closed because of the tornado that hit in 1973. The other Safeway that closed was in 1974. It was at the 29/211 & RT 50 intersection - Near the Hi Gear store. When closed it became Bills Carpet. The Super Giant and Grand Union crushed that little Safeway.

At that intersection there was`Goldies Ice Cream , Sinclair Gas, that became a Penguin Feather, Kinney Shoes, Mister Donut, and the Esso Station.

It's funny me because my family owned the original Fairfax tract house "Mt. Eagle" up on that high ridge until my uncle sold it and the land there to developers in the late sixties. My folks had their wedding reception there in the big house... The original colonial house and barns were burned down by the county just like Ossian Hall on Annandale was. Family was getting older and having trouble there at the house as it was secluded to a degree, vandals etc. Moved out, house got ransacked, burned down and the land sold. Sad. We also had a colonial farmhouse near the Vienna metro, family legend has it that John Singleton Mosby was a guest of my great great aunt there during the war. Yeah, I'm a local...

Ye Ole Woodson Man, The pits were wonderful. In your pic, is this Ron Nagan that worked at Annandale Marine and Sports Center in the '70s? I worked there around '74/'75. I raced a Suzuki TM 400. Remember the Yamaha/Maico shop at the intersection of Rte 7 and Rte 123.

Well, I did not mean to be a douche. Most of the pictures on this thread are pulled from social media sites. If there are any pictures that I posted causing anyone harm please let me know and I will delete them.

Scott D.: That trips a memory, Yes he may have worked there. Ron was about 6ft tall had dark hair and glasses. Back then he had a red Chevy 4X4. He rode a Husky 450 which was a bad bike at that time. Eddie Hornick was a expert class MX rider who rode a Suzuki 400 and also worked for Col. Myers at Annandale Marine. He was there 1971 till ?? He was tall over 6 ft. and skinny with long dark hair and a beard.

Back about 1972, I was at Eddies place. He had a arguement that day at work with the Col. over the Vietnam war, he said the Col was Gung Ho toward it. Then added that he had done "something great" in the Marines in Korea.

Many Many years later I learned that Col. Myers did do Something Great" during the Korean War.. He earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. When I found that out I remembered Eddie and smiled. None of us MX punks knew anything about that at the time. I saw the Col at A.M. about 1990 and told him about Eddie, the bikes and races and shook his hand and told him I never knew anything about him being a MOH recipient. He just said he was a Marine doing his job and he was proud of of the Marines he served with.

Eddie and I raced at Chuck Lea's in Hollywood Md, Budds Creek when it first opened, Shilo in Clarksburg up by Sugarloaf Mt. in Mont. Co Md. Just off 270. We also raced in Waldorf, at Hagerstown. Eddie raced at Basum Farm in Annapolis and I raced at Cedar Ridge in Lousia Co. Va. near Mineral. I rode a Husky 250 and was a yellow plate rider. Eddie started slow then " Steady Eddie"
moved up to white plate expert and was a good rider.

Lots of fun and good times back then! And the whole area was so much different.

Unless you claim you took the photo, there is no harm in linking or rehosting the images. Besides, you found them on PUBLIC DOMAIN.

In a couple of threads there has been mention of Camp Alger, the military base established in the Falls Church-Merrifield area during the Spanish American War. For those who have access to it, there is an article on Camp Alger in the Spring 2014 issue of ON POINT, the journal of Army History. Unfortunately the article isn't among those that can be accessed on line.

I worked at Annandale Marine from '67 through '71 in the old house on Maple Place. The Colonel had just bought part of the company from founder Rick Levine, who stayed on for a few years until the Col brought in another Col (a real prick) and forced him out.

I don't remember any of the names you mentioned. They must have been later than the years mentioned. The guys I remember besides Rick are Paul Lipich, Pat Wagel, Freddie Vaughan, Ben Snapp, and a few other that I can see their faces but forget their names.

About the Medal of Honor thing. The Colonel was rightfully proud of his accomplishment, but he made damned sure we all knew that he had been awarded the MOH. You couldn't work there long without hearing about it. For instance, down in the basement shop, next to the Suzuki and Evinrude service manuals was a copy of a government publication that listed MOH winners from the Civil War onward. Kind of an odd place to keep such a book, don't you think?

BTW, I remember when the first 400 came in. We immediately set it up and took it to Shirley Industrials for a test ride. Bad ass for sure, at least by the standards of the day.

I should add that I had a lot of respect for Colonel Myers, and I actually owe him a lot. He sent me to Evinrude service school in Milwaukee every winter. That combined with working and learning under Rick Levine (the best outboard troubleshooter I've ever met) made me a very competent outboard/sterndrive mechanic at a young age.

The Colonel didn't believe in paying people though, so lots of good people, including me, moved on in search of a liveable wage. I worked at many coastal North Carolina and Chesapeake area boat dealers, all much larger than Annandale Marine and most based at full service marinas. I ended up as service manager, and eventually part owner of one.

Not sure I would have ended up where I did without Reg Myers!

"E Tech" No pun as I know thats the new Evinrude O.B name. Good to hear your history story of AM. I bought a Little Dude motorcycle trailer from the Col in 1971. it was a nice new place and must have just opened where it was when it closed. Eddie went to work there late 1971 or maybe 1972 early in the year.

Col Myers died in 2005 seems like that was yesterday. He let the area and retired in Jupitor Fl. He is buried in section 60 in Arlington Cem. Up close to the main road on the left side. Sec 60 is where the Irag and Afgan war vets are being buried in the back of the section.

I saw him several times at the Wash boat show in DC back in the late 80's early 90's.

I visited Col. Myers grave in 2011 on Memorial Day with all the flags on all the graves as they do each Memorial day. My father is buried in the next section 66.

I had a Evinrude 90 1988 model. The lower unit driveshaft broke after only 3 years right at the pinion nut.. Bad metal.. I bought a used 1979 unit from Ernest Newton in Safford Co.in 1992. He was a old time boat mechinac who worked out of his house. He told me that the Evinrude motors were very tough and he had seem many limp back in with serious damage. I found out how true that was in 2005 after I took my motor down . I was going to rebuild it. The pistons had broken rings, chunks of metal out of the sides of them. crank had burned scoring and some chips out of it so did the rods. It had 1800 hours on it and had seized a couple times because the VRO had air leaks I think. I got rid of the VRO and mixed 50 - 1 and ran it for years. That old 1979 lower unit had a couple thousand hours on it and I sold it for 100 dollars with more then a thousand extra. It was still going strong. I was surprised how tough that old V4 was carrying me all over the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay!

As far as outboards, Johnson/Evinrude has been shit for decades even before OMC went under. I think the Canadian outfit Bombardier owns the names now. Wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole. Mercury has always been shit.

There is only ONE outboard that I would recommend today----YAMAHA. We've been Yamaha dealers for over 20 years now and with what a big outboard costs nowadays there's no sense taking a chance. I will say that Honda makes a pretty good motor too----a solid number two.

They're all too heavy anymore, but with the two strokes banished forever....

Ye I bought a Yamaha in 2005 as the old Evinrude was way beyond repair. It has been a great motor. Its not as smooth as the Evinrude as its a 3 cyl nor as powerfull , just does not have the punch the V4 had but its been good and Im happy with it .I did not like what happened to the Evinrude/Johnsons either.

>down in the basement shop, next to the Suzuki and Evinrude service manuals was a copy of a government publication that listed MOH winners from the Civil War onward.

He probably had that list there so people could check and see he was a real recipent. There have been many fakers of the MOH award. Back then there were no computers to check someone out.

these were made in the 60s with a rotatable arrow that the vdot guys could set as they installed them. There are still a few around. Saw one a couple months back on old route 55 near the town of Marshall Virginia. I know I have seen them in other places in Fairfax county so be on the lookout. Most of these signs are long gone.
