I remember that. We lived in Strathmeade Square at the time (nicer place back then than it is now). The gas station at Yorktowne Centre (Gallows and Route 50, which at the time was a crossroads and not the interchange it is now) had signs up telling people to form the line wrapping all the way around the shopping center back behind the Giant and along Route 50 in order to keep Gallows Road clear. You were almost better off going grocery shopping somewhere with no gas station because of people trying to box you out when you were trying to park lest you try to cut the line.

Mrs. Barnes was our crossing guard in elementary school. Nice lady. Second pic is when they first moved in when the Pimmit Hills houses were first built. She's wearing boots because there's no grass yet.
Lotta people talk crap about Pimmit Hills. They did when I was growing up too. Some morons will because of this post. Most of them have never been there, but love to repeat what they've heard about it, mostly from others who haven't been there. It was a pretty good place then, and from what I can see today, it still is.

@GettinOld, those are great pictures! I mean that is America right there. Growing up in the 60s and 70s when people were happy to have a little house and a Ford or GM in the driveway were some good times. Seems like now folks cant be happy unless they have 5 bathrooms and granite counter-tops!
I attended quite a few summer cookouts in Pimmit hills as a kid, my dad had a friend who lived there and had one of those above ground pools that were always advertised in the TV guide section of the Washington Star. Great times!

Here's an old Erwin Ford newspaper ad from 1950, offering a Brockway truck for sale. They were located somewhere on Route 211 (Lee Highway) - not exactly a surprise.

That second picture has to be near Arlington Ridge Rd/ Army Navy Dr. The old house in the upper left must have been torn down and maybe replaced by The Cavendish condos? I work in that area and walk the neighborhood if the weather is nice, it looks very familiar but dated, I am missing something here. Hmm....

Oh wow, now I get the location of the second pic. That building is still there, it's now corporate apartments, next to a hotel. My best friend lived there when she was transferred back to the area about 8 years ago. And my college roommate was a lifeguard at the hotel pool about 17 years ago. That complex was "upgraded" when my best friend was living there, or right before. It's across the street and down the hill from Ragtime.

That reminded me of an old Victorian I walk by near work. 5151 14th St North, in Arlington. It sold recently and apparently was owned by one Major Lacey. Listed as built in 1860.The adjoining land was parceled and two smaller Mcmansions were plopped next door (at 1.2 mil each)- probably paid for purchasing the original house.

On the North Springfield Edward Carr ad- Note the road is printed as two words "Back Lick" Rd. vs. Backlick Rd. Did the old timey signs on that road actually have two words "Back Lick"?

Also has anyone noticed that the new Fairfax County road signs now have small letters instead of all caps? Franconia vs FRANCONIA.

Hmmmm, did they even have street signs back in the old days? Thought directions were more like, "Go down past the crick, take a left at ole Johnson's house, go on down about two miles, take a right at the big oak tree, and you're there. Can't miss it."

But yes, as Jess1 pointed out, old maps indicate the street was named back lick. The name was derived from salt licks in the area that attracted deer and woods buffalo. (From 'Braddock's True Gold.")

Are you trying to tell me that the road was not named for an area where customers would go to get their back licked?

We all know that the Jerrys sub place on 236 in Annandale was a Arthur Treachers back in the day but before that it was Burger Chef. Although the structure has been modified over the years you can still see the basic angled window supports in the front of the building which prove that our old Burger chef is still under there.

Really? I did not know that. AFA the two word form, I wasn't here in the early 60's (as in not a resident of ANY county yet). I always assumed the road was named for a General Backlick or maybe it was an Indian name. Yup we sure got a lot of deer around Back Lick even without the salt licks. What's a woods buffalo? We had buffalo here 100 years ago? Wow, deer are hard enough on the garden and shrubs- buffalo would be even worse.

Great frickin article. Any idea where that farm is today? Still there? Subdivision?

By the way, the article makes it sound like $5000 back then wasn't so much money.

Didn't houses sell for like $4000 back then? Not farm houses, of course, but nice houses in Arlington and Fairfax?

In other words, I thought 5 grand was a sh**load back then.

I took this picture at the Fairfax Co / Arlington County line. This one is located just west of Old Dominion Dr. It is on private property! (no Trespassing) I was there for some work projects and noticed it, took the vines off and took photo.

Cool stuff! I also found another in Lorton, South of Harley Rd (off Gunston Rd). Also on private property. It looked the same w/ Iron protection fence, etc. Thought I would share. Will take pictures when I run into others along "The Border".

@SJ -

The Hughes farm featured in the rural electrification article was located on the south side of Route 7 just past the Fairfax-Loudoun County line. The Hughes family sold out to developers in the early 60s. Sterling Boulevard, which was laid out in 1968, bisects the parcel at its intersection with Route 7. Below is an old map of the development with the 226-acre parcel highlighted in yellow. Below that is a current view of the same area. I added the yellow outlines, which should depict the approximate boundaries of the old farm. Given the way the area was built out, I doubt that any visible remnants of the old farm survived.

The farm was operated during this period primarily by Randolph Hughes, pictured in the article, and Darr Hughes, his brother. Their father, Jesse Hughes, started the farm earlier in the 20th Century. Jesse Hughes also just happened to be the long-time head of the Democratic Party in Loudoun County. Given this fact, it doesn't take a genius to figure out why an FDR-era New Deal program picked out this farm among all the places where it could have showcased its work. Political patronage was rather blatant in those days. The $5,000 investment was indeed a lot of money. It equates to more than $84,000 in today's dollars. That is even more impressive when you consider that the country was still struggling to overcome the Great Depression. But that money wasn't coming out of Old Man Hughes' pockets.

One interesting side note about the development built on the Hughes' land is that the project was funded by U.S. Steel, which was interested in advancing the use of steel in residential construction. The idea never really took root, but apparently there are a lot of late-60s era houses in this area with steel framing.

This is amazing research. Thanks for offering modern satellite with the older Eu.Sc. map... very cool. We can only further offer- no visible remnants of the old Hughes have been identified in the area to date. It's all been dozed-over and built-upon.

Been crazy busy, but many thanks folks! Great job keeping FFXU's best thread going!

Being a historic architecture nut (among other things...) this Frank Lloyd Wright House has always been a very tranquil spot to visit and hangout. It is at Woodlawn Plantation now, but maybe some do not know it's history and Falls Church connection, although no insults intended if you do. LOL. "One of only three Frank Lloyd Wright houses built in Virginia once stood at 1005 Locust Street, Falls Church (just outside current city limits, in Fairfax County). Commissioned in 1939 by journalist Loren Pope and his wife Charlotte Pope, it followed Wright's Usonian design principles and was completed in 1941. The Popes sold it to Robert and Marjorie Leighey in 1946. In 1963, the house was threatened with condemnation for the construction of Interstate 66. Marjorie Leighey (then a widow) donated it to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1964; it was dismantled, moved, and reconstructed at Woodlawn Plantation, where it opened to the public as the Pope-Leighey House in 1965."
I love how it looks unique and compact on the outside but inside it is like an open outside environment. This is a type of FLW "Usonian" home...built for the common man.

Hey, I remember Starvin Marvin had a pizza called "Marvin's mess" where they loaded that pizza up with every topping they had in the house. We used to roll in there half drunk and tear one up.

Although nothing is left from the Hughes farm, the house next door on Route 7 still stands. A local realtor purchased it in the 1960s to use as a sales office for the new development. He later added on to the structure and rented portions of it out as small offices. The pictures below compare the house as it appeared in the 1950s to the building today. The profile of the original home with the twin dormers is still apparent to the right of the more recently added main entrance and office wing. The fence in the older picture appears to correspond with the indentation at the northeast corner of the main Hughes parcel, as shown in the maps I posted earlier.

Seems like I discovered this thread about the same time that everyone else lost interest. I have spent hours looking over the wonderful pictures and stories of the place where I grew up.

The only contribution I can come up with is this old shot of the 1320 club II in Brookfield plaza. The place is sleazy but it was a rite of passage after you turned 18 to go in there for a beer and most of the guys at Annandale high school did it until the drinking age was raised to 21.
The blacklights on the ceiling and the glow in the dark ladies on the floor are classic!

The most interesting thing about the newspaper photo of the proposed Springfield Interchange in 1978, is that I-66 stops at the beltway, and doesn't continue inside the beltway with the connection to 267/7 and beyond.

Yep, that's the way it was until 1981 or so. Arlington fought having I-66 constructed within its borders, even though all the houses, etc. that would have been in its path had been removed ages before. They're still fighting any widening of I-66 in the People's Republic of Arlington.

Who remembers the tornado in 1996? I was in Sterling park that afternoon and saw the sky turn pitch black. There was a section of woods that crossed pleasant valley road where the mature trees were snapped off like twigs. Roofing and siding contractors were busy for a year afterwards.

June 24, 1996, "Centreville Tornado": A strong rotating thunderstorm developed over Virginia. After dropping hail in the Shenandoah Valley, it moved east. A State Trooper spotted a small funnel drop down and pick up some trees along Route 50 west of Middleburg. It quickly dissipated. and 20 minutes later, NWS Doppler radar in Sterling (just 5 miles north) identified a tornado wind couplet in the doppler wind display indicating winds over 100 mph. An F2 tornado (winds 100 to 150 mph) moved from the southeast tip of Loudoun County into Fairfax County and struck the Sully Station community of Centreville. Seventeen homes had major damage and six of them were condemned. Dozens more had moderate damage. After about 5 miles, the tornado began to weaken as the storms strong rear-flank downdraft began to pull the tornado more to the southeast.
The tornado had weakened to a borderline F1 (70-90 mph winds) as it moved across the southern outskirts of Fairfax City. Homes here were in a heavily wooded area and so unless a tree fell right on the house, they were somewhat protected by the strongest winds. Soon the downburst wind from the rear-flank of the storm became stronger and bigger than the weakening tornado. It was a small weak F0 tornado by the time it passed George Mason University and reached the Capitol Beltway. The downburst with winds up to 80 mph, however, continued into Alexandria and across the Potomac into Maryland. A US Air Shuttle almost crashed on takeoff into the winds. The storm eventually spawned another tornado in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Power was out to 80,000 homes and some did not have power restored for a week due to the extent of the storm. Insurance estimates of county-wide damage from the tornado and the downbursts ranged between 3 and 6 million dollars. Only one injury was recorded.

The place looks a lot different in this picture, but if you look closely its the same building, just with a lot of green around it in place of all the asphalt that's there now. Not sure how much of that green was real and how much was the postcard illustrator's artistic liberty.
