Look what's going on at Columbia Pike and Glebe now. I guess the developers think the trolley is going to be the bomb.

Keep Arlington weird, if there are any places to keep weird.

They all looked the same. I guess it still happens now with big box stores.
The one on 236 (now a home depot) near Jefferson HS looked just like that too.

I remember the membership thing.

The Annandale store had its main entrance located on the narrow side of the building fronting 236, while other stores had the entrance located on the wider face. I believe it was Home Depot that re-oriented the store so its main entrance is now on the wider Braddock Road side.

Correct, Bill N. The main entrance faced 236 while it was Memco, then Bradlees, then Hechinger, before Home Depot took over and changed the configuration.

The Frozen Dairy Bar was the best! I remember driving through the intersection (Annandale Road and Route 50) after the blizzards in 1986 and seeing a milk tanker making a delivery.

Good times! So few wonderful local color places left around here. I hate the homogenizing of America.

Although its not in Fairfax Co, Kline's Freeze in Manassas off 28 has the same nostalgic feel as the Frozen Dairy Bar.

Long ago but not that far away, I was an 8-year-old, visiting my grandparents in Mantua. It was June 1969.

I remember driving east on Rt. 50, and an Esso (now Exxon) station -- I'm pretty sure at Graham Rd -- had burned. The entire building and parking lot were black with carbon.

Anyone remember that? Did I hallucinate it? For extra credit, post pictures :-)

It was a hallucination. They didn't let 8 year olds drive in 1969.

I don't remember the Esso/Exxon at Graham Rd. catching on fire but the Esso/Exxon at Patrick Henry Dr. at Seven Corners caught fire in the 70's. My brother in law was sitting at the light when the fire started in one of the bays.

Well, that's pretty close, and it *was* a long time ago. But it would have had to be June 1969, because that's when I visited my grandparents alone; a couple of months later we moved far away for a long time. Are you sure it was "the 70s"?

Interesting stuff @ the fire - the Esso @ PH & 50 burned in the 60's: http://www.fallschurchvfd.org/photovideo.asp?event=18

but the "old" Esso station at Graham wasn't - it was sold off, and the new developers built a different station. From the FFX County Zoning Board Minutes Book 11 (1964) "Lee-Graham Venture, to permit erection and operation of a
service station, S. W. corner of Lee Highway and Graham Road,
Falls Church District. This station is leased to Mobile oil"

It didn't become an Esso/Exxon station until later.

BTW, FFX County has scanned in most of their record books from '41 thru 2004. Fascinating reading about who wanted to do what across the county during the postwar/start of growth eras...

As far back as I can remember the Exxon at Graham has always been an Esso/Exxon.
That is at the N.E corner of Graham and Arlington Blvd. (RT. 50)
The S.W. corner of Lee Highway and Graham is the next light north of RT. 50
There was a station in the corner of the shopping center there.
It opened as a Mobil and is a Sunoco station now

Looking a little closer at the willis service picture I see the words Kaiser Frazier on top of the building. I am 49 years old and I have never heard of the Kaiser Frazer car company until now. Cool!

This picture was posted on a previous page of this thread. I did not pick up on the Kaiser Frazer sign hanging out front.

Are you an old Jefferstonian by chance? LoL Refering to the starvin marvins photos.

Mundane requests- pics- Rchard c. Byrd library springfield, Jack in the Box annandale (saw the theater pic only), the "rocking chair" theater off hertitage drive at 236/hummer.

Mind blowing to learn cap't 20 was that "scary" guy from Creature Feature. :-) Maybe someone should post a pic from that other fabulous channel 20 show, Wonderama".

I had forgotten all about captain dan and his choppper landing at our runty school until this thread. THANKS ALL.

Hmm, wonder if the Fisher's Hardware Springfield is in business still after all the mention of ho jo's and the springfield mcD's. I remember that sign turning 1 million gagged down!

Lastly, no one seemed to notice or remark on the Foo Fighter ringing in on page 8 of this thread. That was a nice photo of he and his mom.

They were still there till around the late eighties, the park authority moved/added trails around then and they pulled out the last two, a black one and a (I think) white one, close to Braddock and the creek. Near where there used to be a bridge over Accotink creek to Howry Field/community gardens area, close to the brick power building.

There's an artist who works out of an artist collective in Occouqan -- Local Color -- she works exclusively on places around here (and the Outer Banks). I have a portrait, picture of Giffords in Baileys XRoad and the old Frozen Dairy Bar. But she has a lot of wonderful, long gone places you might want to see.

I don't think THe Company Inkwell ever actually opened at Tysons. The sign was standing out there forever, but I don't think a single meal was ever served. Ate many times at the real location in Rosslyn and it was indeed very good.
