Those prices must be early 70's. I saw several LUMS one was on Rt 236 at Fairfax Courthouse but I never went in one, seeing that menu I am suffering!
I am a sucker for a beer in a frosted glass and a Italian sub on a hot crusted roll, Hot Dog steamed in beer with sauerkraut, Shrimp Basket..I heard of the beer there knew people who went but I never did. Too fancy for me, My style was the old roadside stand on Rt 29 on the left going out of Fairfax City where Big Screen is today. Little place with flyspecked screens and excellent greasy hamburger subs.

Ironic, I was just talking with a buddy on the phone not 1/2 an hour ago about long gone food places and Lums came up. Apperently- the last remaining original Lums is near Omaha. Two new Lums have opened up in the past couple years in MA. The Omaha site still looks like a Lums though (pic).

Couldn't find a caption for the pic-so it may well be the Springfield mall location. It has to be one of the early few NOVA locations due to the very obvious 1970's interior style.

Apperently the nudist club was near the old Bowman farm. I know the Bowman farm as the place Virginia Gentleman bourbon came from. I worked a summer in the early 80s at the Coca Cola bottling plant off Seminary and our delivery route went all the way to Reston and we delivered to the plant. The guys at the distillery needed mixers, you know. The original building is a historical site now (top pic), but I remember the distillery looking a lot bigger (second pic).

Ahh that town regulated box and parallelogram architecture from Reston. Simply insert food vendor- no corporately recognizable architecture allowed. I would guess the pic is 1970-72 according to the logo (pic 1).

see

The USPS changed the colors on their trucks and the mail boxes in 1972. Look at the mail truck - They are the old colors, and they als changed from the Pony Express logo to the Eagle.

I believe this is the location of Locust Hill. A portion of the original house was built in 1790.

History:
It was the home of Colonel Milton Dulaney Hall (1848-1939), who purchased the house when he married Ella A. Coffer in 1881. The house, situated on more than 200 acres, was the Coffer family farm.

Hall was the superintendent of the Fairfax County Public Schools system from 1886 to 1929, when W. T. Woodson took over. Hall was also elected to the board of the National Bank of Fairfax on July 26, 1902.

The Hall's had two children, Nannie in 1887 and William in 1895.

On October 1, 1908, his then 48-year-old wife was struck by a northbound Chesapeake and Ohio train and killed near Burke's Station at about 2:00 in the afternoon. Her death was listed as a possible suicide, as she had recently been released from a sanitarium.

On March 9, 1910, Hall married 38-year-old Elizabeth C. Hall, in Tryst Oak, North Carolina. They continued to live at Locust Hill.

Hall retired as Superintendent of the Fairfax County Public schools in 1929.

The Coffer family cemetery is located near Woods Sorrell Lane.

Known for a brief time as "Rosecrea" in the 1940's, the house is now owned by the Burke Center Conservancy.

I do not remember that one at all but I was a west springfield/burke kid. Howard Johnsons had a history of putting their restaurants at a raised elevation and the 7 corners location fits that profile so the name "Summit" would have been fitting. Is that a giant pepper grinder or a giant cheese grater?

I was just in Falls Church city the other day right near were the old LUMS was on Broad Street. My parents used to take me there when I was a kid. I wasn't old enough to have a beer there, but I loved their hot dogs! Later they changed the name to Mr. Mugs or something like that.

Funny how restaurants come and go over the years. I bet a quite few different businesses operated out of that place over the years.

I loved that little Giant that is pictured behind Pistone's in the picture, between the former First Virginia Bank towers. It was small enough that you could find things, Hurricane Isabelle did that one in, Giant didn't want to pay for repairing such a small Giant...

The Mr. Ray in the Summit Manor picture is " Mr. Ray" Giovannoni. He started out in Daytona Beach Fl with a place called Old Timers when they raced on the beach, He had a custom car building business in the early 60's , He had the Summit Manor and it did well, Mr Ray was a very outgoing friendly and generous man, he bought the bar many times at his places. He opened the Il Porto in Old town Alex about 1975 when Old Town was just coming back, Then his most Famous restaurant The Fish Market about 1976. In Mr. Rays day the Fishmarket was a great place. He had several large yatchs "Mystery" a 92ft motor yatch he kept at the Alex City Dock, then "America" The Schooner America he had it made as a exact replica of the schooner America that won the first Americas Cup.

One evening I took my mother to the Fishmarket and Mr Ray was at the bar right behind us, my mother called the waitress and told her that man was very loud, I laughed and told her that was Mr Ray the owner and we had a good laugh.

I used to get a kick seeing Mr. Ray at the City dock on Mystery, as people passed by and asked him if he knew any good restaurants, he would tell them , "For Seafood I Recommend the Fishmarket" It was said he opened and sold so many restaurants he had to open a wholesale commercial restaurant supply company which he did have in a warehouse in Old Town. A big piece of Old Town Alexandria left in May 1998 when Mr Ray died. He was a man who lived life to the fullest and did what he enjoyed doing in life with his work.

When Mr Ray died he left 1% and 2 % shares of The Fishmarket business to his long time employees, people who were loyal to him as he had been to them with up to 30+ years working for Mr Ray. Dishwashers, cooks, bartenders, Mr Rays people were taken care of.

Wow, that was a McDonald's from before 1990 until 2000 or 2001, when McDonald's (or the local franchisee) closed a bunch of stores all of a sudden (including most of the storefront ones in strip plazas). I still think of it as McD's; hard to believe it's been 13 years, and may have been Ariake longer than it was McD's!

That I dont remember but it probably was, the HoJos was gone way back I dont even remeber that one and I came in 1970 and there was a Italian Rest, there before Pistones and others had told me Mr Rays former place was there abouts.
A visit to The Virginian Room at the Fairfax City Lib will tell, they have old phone books there.

The Gold Gym is where the Dart Drug was perpendicular to the Bradlick Theatre. The Theatre is now Auntie Te's and the Papa John's.

Saw many a movie at that theatre, I think the last was "Best Friends" also liked the Annandale Theatre.

That's because back then (probably like today) Vienna would play dirty, kicking and punching in the tackle pile and shoving their helmet into your chin the way the shitass coaches would teach them! I was in SYC and played against Joe Theismann's son and that was the dirtiest team I played against in all my years in youth sports. Good times...

I work close by to where that private driveway was. It would be cool to follow it's orginal path but I know its extremely doubtful that any part of it remains.

Cars are too new to be the Annandale Shakey's but there were many good times at the Annandale Shakey's after Jefferson being defeated in yet another football game...

That was not the Shakey's at Annandale. I worked at Shakey's during high school and my first two years of college. Our sign was right at 236, not close to the building. Also, we did not have a message board on our sign. This looks more like the Shakey's in Tysons (different ownership group).

Anyone remember Walnut Hill on Annandale Rd? This is the best picture I could find of it.

"The estate included the manor house which was built to resemble Tara, a twelve stall stable, a mile long track for equine work-outs, a clover shaped swimming pool, a two story guest lodge, and a duck pond.

The manor house consisted of twelve rooms. Surprisingly it only had three bedrooms but each was the size of a basketball court while their sunken baths boasted marble steps and gold banisters. Each room was designed for maximum comfort and function. The Arnolds enjoyed hosting large dinner parties in a dining room which seated 40. The walls of the den were covered in elegant white leather. The trophy room sported as many trophies and equestrian ribbons as the spacious shelves and cupboards could accommodate. Behind the main house was another impressive structure, the Guest Lodge, which would dwarf the McMansions of today."

Cars are still too new to be any Shakey's that was in NoVA.

Walnut Hill lovely instead of those MacMansions that are there now...

If you zoom out on that Shakey's picture, you'll start to got a better idea of where it was taken. Hint: There are not many palm trees in Annandale.

The second picture is the same location taken from Google Maps. The store is in Inglewood, California.

There is a bakery at Twinbrook shopping center on Braddock called Unique Bakery. The owner's name is Michael and he was a baker for Brenners for many years. He makes many of their old recipes, including the chocolate top cookies. Check him out.

Thanks guys! I guess I got some bogus info on that Shakey's picture. I worked in Tysons back in the 80s and we would hit that Shakey's buffet every couple weeks for lunch. I also recall eating at the Kmart lunch counter when Kmart was still right on route 7.

I asked him to bake a birthday cake that was just like the old fashioned
cakes from Brenners. We had been getting them at the Alexandria location
until they finally closed a few years ago. He was excited and assured
me that it would be just like we remembered. Unfortunately, although the
external appearance was similar, the cake and frosting weren't anything
like the old cakes.

Sadly, it turns out he doesn't know how to make them, after all.

Anybody have any pictures of the Belvoir Grill?

I drove down Route 1 today, and you can still the remnants of the old cement pad there, but nothing more.

Anybody remember when it was torn down?

Any good stories?

OK- where are the remnants? somewhere close to the Hess station I am guessing?

Cool pic on page 5 - but have to admit I really don't remember it. FWIW there is a Wash Post article about the place from the early 90s but it looks like you have to pay for it. I guess I wasn't "notorious" so that's why I don't remember it.

Heading north on Route 1....after passing the Tulley gate of Ft Belvoir, there is a Burger King on the left then a tiny strip shopping center with a 7-11. The Belvoir Grill was next to that.

Came across this Falls Church history--Igloo Village:

In October of 1941, Wallace Neff began construction on a community of twelve bubble houses in Falls Church, Virginia. The project was paid for by the federal government, and was used to house government workers. The neighborhood would eventually take on the nickname Igloo Village.

The process was called “airform.” First, a big slab of concrete was poured in the shape of a giant coin.

Next, they inflated a giant balloon in the shape of a grapefruit, with the flat side down. This balloon was tied down to the foundation using steel hooks.

After the balloon was inflated it was coated in a fine powder, then was covered with a magical substance called gunite. Gunite, a product of water and dry cement mix combined at a high pressure was shot out of a gun.

After the gunite dried the balloon was deflated and pulled out through the front door so it could be used again on the next house.

Two men with a balloon and a gunite machine could turn a bare patch of soil into a bubble house in less than 48 hours.

When the gunite dried it was more than twice as strong as regular concrete. Wallace Neff was so confident in his design that he would invite people to bash the walls of the bubble with the back side of an axe. The axe would just bounce off.

Oh yes, Hillwood Square is an amazing story--strange, but amazing! Shame they couldn't keep this piece of history around. But I'm sure by today's standards, it just wasn't financially feasible. Probably cost less to just bulldoze the buildings.

Check out the old lady who just wouldn't leave! I believe she just recently decided it wasn't worth it anymore and moved out.

Apparently approximately 10 miles west of DC there used to be a place name Horseshoe Hill in Fairfax County and that's where Igloo Village was built. (Never heard of Horseshoe Hill!) Igloo Village was torn down in 1961 by a developer and replaced by an apartment complex.

Maybe someone else will have better luck in pinpointing the exact location.

Couple more pics of Igloo Village attached.

The area in the top left where Washington Blvd and Shirley Highway (then I-395) intersected was the OLD Mixing Bowl before everything grew up outside the Beltway.

According to a 2007 Washington Post article, Igloo Village was located just off Lee Highway west of Falls Church. They were torn down for apartments, which have since been converted to condos, on the north side of Lee Highway before you reach the intersection with West Street. Below is a shot from Historic Aerials in which you can see the series of "two-bubble" houses along a side road off Lee Highway that no longer exists. A current shot of the area is below that.

Technically, Horseshoe Hill is just north of this site in the City of Falls Church proper. I presume, though, that the name must have been used in those days for the broader area around the hill.

This is a picture of Falcon St in Annandale, taken in March 1960. The community was Crestwood Manor. This was taken soon after my parents bought their house. The second picture was taken in late April or early May after the street had been finished. Annandale seemed out in the middle of nowhere then - "the sticks" as my grandparents called it.

Thanks, TJ73. I actually lived in one of those houses back in the day: same subdivision, different street. Those chimneys led to fireplaces in the middle of the floor plan that opened on two sides, one facing the living room and the other facing the dining room/kitchen. They were useless because the openings had no covers and were too small to equip with standard covers you could buy at the hardware store. If you tried to use the fireplace with two openings it sucked out all the heat in the house. You might have been able to fix it if you were willing to sink the money into custom covers, but no one I knew had done this so they basically just sat there and took up space. But looking past that flaw, it was still a good starter house on a nice lot.

While I'm at it, here's one more "bubble house" related pic. This is the crowd of gawkers parking along Lee Highway. Based on the topography the photo is facing east, which puts the Burlington Motel across the street from "igloo village" on the south side of Lee Highway.

Stumbled on this old picture from the mid 20s. Maybe part of our history that we would like to forget but history nonetheless.

The Ballston Klan No. 6 gathered on their field
The Ku Klux Klan probably arrived in Northern Virginia in 1921, but the organization didn’t rise into prominence until March 1922 when four hundred members marched from Chain Bridge to Falls Church passing through Clarendon, Ballston, Cherrydale, and Rosslyn. The marchers carried signs saying “We are for upholding the law”. According to one report, Northern Virginia had about 60,000 KKK members in the twenties, which may have been as much as two-thirds of the state membership, with the largest regional chapter being the Ballston Klan No. 6. The Ballston chapter held regular parades with its own marching band, sponsored a youth baseball team, and owned a field for cross burnings and other ceremonies at the current site of Ballston Mall. Of course this was the second coming of the Klan, which had risen from the ashes of the Civil War in the south avenge perceived wrongs such as equal rights to blacks. The first KKK was a terrorist organization enforcing racial codes in the rural south, but the second KKK was an urban fraternal organization obsessed with preserving its own brand of Americanism. The new KKK worked to minimize the influence of the newer white ethnics of Catholic and Jewish faiths while continuing to fret about blacks attempting to gain equality. Beyond this, the Klan worked for moral causes, threatening bootleggers, gamblers, and home wreckers.

I would say the above picture is circa 2012. It LOOKS old, and I really like the old-timey feel of it.

But you can clearly see what look like cars in the road, the street light is the exact same, the trees are the same height and shape, and so is the hedge on the right.

For a class trip in high school we went to Gettysburg and took similar photos, pretty neat exercise.

That's it, right by Kamp Washington. After Mr Donut went away, Dunkin' Donuts opened up shop there, then they closed (that looks like when the pic was taken), then Dunkin' reopened again, then they closed again, and now they've reopened again in the new complex of shops there.

42 years ago a skinny blonde shoulder lenght long haired 17 yr. old male youth went into Mr. Donut at Kamp Washington. Outside was parked a mid 60's Ford Fairlane 500 , Front end jacked high, rear end down low, with static straps curb feelers, baby moons, and dice hanging from the rear view mirror. The car had West Virginia license plates.

The youth walked in the glass door and saw two contruction workers with slicked
greased back high pompador hair cuts, cigerettes dangling from their lips. The beehived Rhinestone cats eye glasses wearing waitress had a coffee pot in hand about to refill their cups. She saw the youth and froze, the youth froze, the men turned on their stools, The youth slowly turned around and left and could clearly hear the loud laughing behind his back...Those were the days!!

It's the ghost of a boy they used to call Kid Charlemagne. His friend Steely Dan wrote a song about him after graduating from Annandale. Steely Dan later became a popular singer/songwriter. He wrote a popular song about Annandale High School that became a big hit back in the 70s.
