Why didn't you get a V-4 Yamaha? The 115 and 130 Yamaha V-4s are some of the best outboards they ever made.

About the Medal of Honor book in the shop, only employees were down there, so it must have been there so we could read his citation. He could have kept it at home or in his office it seems like.

I'm not saying the Colonel was not a true war hero, he certainly was. I'm just saying that he did not obscure the fact, quite the opposite. I remember one time, he told us that he was going to Daytona for the Firecracker 400 (now Coke Zero 400). He added that NASCAR was treating MOH recipients to the race. And as somebody mentioned, when VA started issuing MOH license plates, he got 'em.

All I'm saying is the subject of the MOH came up often and one could not work there long and be unaware of it.

We raced with another famous man who was probably the best known Air Force commander in the Vietnam war. He went to Budds Creek a lot as we did and rode a Husky, he was full race and had everything , tools and tool boxes, tent canopy, little sprayer jugs to wash off the bikes.Torsten Hallman leathers.
He was over 50 and we MX punks got a big kick out of that as he was the oldest person racing older then my father by 10 years back then. He was in good shape and had a handlebar mustache. Word got out that he was a pilot maybe even a fighter pilot. We asked him and he brushed it off.."Ya I have flown a bit in some planes no big deal". He was a good guy and rode very well aginst us young guys . He had a name you would never forget Robin Olds.Many years later I saw his pic. in a Vietnam war history book. He had been a Ace in WW2 shot down Migs in Korea, was a Col commanding the AF fighters in Thailand. He shot down 4 Migs in Vietnam and could have taken a 5th to be a MIG ace in Vietnam but passed it off to his wingman as he knew the AF would send him home on PR tour, he was a fighter pilots pilot and trained his pilots in classic WW2 dogfight tactics upping their Mig kills. Later he was the Supt of the US Air Force academy and retired just before racing at Budds Creek as a Brig Gen. In Vietnam he had his handlebar mustache although it was against AF regs. He was a good guy and a hero also. And we never knew about him being a hero back then.

Robin Olds?

He was the man...brilliant s.o.b., and you left out a huge part of his resume...he was an All-American football player at West Point, and is a member of the college football hall of fame.

He graduated early (as so often happened during WWII) and became an ace when he was around the age of 25, flying P-38's and P-51's.

Did NOT fly in Korea, and reportedly was not happy about that. He was married to Ella Raines, who was a hugely famous and beautiful hollywood star of the day, and maybe that was a reason.

Flew F-4's in Vietnam in his mid 40's...and was the first to get 4 MIG's (there were only two "front seat" aces, and 3 more "back seat" aces in Vietnam).

And so, he is also a member of some aviation hall of fame, can't remember which one, but a legit one as I remember...

I've heard that he was known to be a bit of an iconoclast, and like to party a bit...and even though he did eventually become a general, he was more interested in being a fighter pilot, and to "fly and fight".

I think I can attribute this to him, my memory gets cloudy on this, but a story is that he was giving a speech where many Strategic Air Command personnel were present...these were the "bomber" guys...and of course there was a rivalry between them and the fighter guys...for prestige, funding, whatever. The SAC motto is "Peace is our Profession". Cool enough, I guess...but not for a fighter pilot. He got up on stage, and said, "My name is Robin Olds, and peace has never been my profession"...good stuff.

His men loved him.

Unfortunately, I never met him, so I don't know those personality things first hand.

Thats what I found out 25 years later as said we did not know any of that then he was the "Old Guy Moto Cross Rider" We talked to him many times in the pits. One time a guy said something about how fast his car was, he was racing on the street, BG Olds did not like that and he said "You think your cars fast try taking off in a jet on full afterburner zero to sixty in two second flat, Don't be doing that stupid stuff on the streets".

And as said he down played his military career. We never knew he was a retired Brig General.

He had his mustache in Vietnam and yes he was a very popular commander with all his men officers and enlisted. When he got back to the States after Vietnam he reported to a General and the General walked up to him, pointed at his mustache and said "Take It Off" he simply said "Yes Sir" and that was that.

I saw him on the history channel about a year before he died, he did not look anything like he did. At the cycle races he looked about the same as he did in Thailand just a bit older. He spoke on the History Channel about downing a German in a M109 . he was in a P38 I think, he saw the Germans 50 miles off and they overtook them from the rear stealthly. He dropped down and had the M109 in his gunsight then his engne stumbled and quit, he had not changed his fuel tanks and ran out on 1. He made a quick decision and pulled the trigger, the German 109 went down, then he switched tanks restarted and got out of there. He said on History Channel that he was the first pilot in History in Combat to down an enemy plane... In Glide mode! I got a good kick out of that.

God Bless you Gen. Olds, Col Myers and all those unnamed who have served our country in war and peace and keep my and my familys shirt on our backs, sleeping safe in our beds at night without fear.

Oh, as far as any partying went with Gen Olds. I was 19 at the time no partying for me back then with the Gen. He was cycle racing for fun, I never saw him partying.

Budds Creek Motor Cross had just opened about 71 or so Lots of people from Nova went there on Sundays then as today. I have not been there in 40 years but have passed by many times going to the bay.
The one rider #26 white plate expert class, I think his name is Mike Cleveland. He was a very smooth rider and won lots of races. He was one of the top riders then at Budds Creek His bike is a 250 Montessa. The Maico Jumper is Steady Eddie Expert #8. He became a top rider also. Ye Ole is a yellow plate #250 on a Husky 250 just slogging along "doing my job" for the spectators.

Col Myers was a Major as stated the XO of the unit. He was a WW2 marine thats why he was in Korea at the beginning of the war. He was ordered to form up the unit of marines and Army troops , they were "cooks and candlestick makers" and he formed them into a fighting unit, all US Marines are riflemen first no matter if they are male or female or what their military MOS is cook or supply person. As stated he took the small force up that hill and defended it against a much larger enemy force keeping them from taking the ground below.
Which helped greatly as they were all in the "Frozen" Chosen Reservoir area of battle. US Marine General then Col. Chester"Chesty Puller" was the officer who put Col. Myers in for the CHM.
Col Myers had a friend in the Corps. Carl Sitters a Marine Major who was in the area also. Maj. Sitters was in a terrific battle in the Chosen area and he too recieved the MOH along with then Maj Myers at the White House at the same ceremony from US President Harry Truman. Maj Sitter became a Col in the Marines as well, he lived in Richmond Va. after he retired and he and Col Myers were life long friends.

The Yamaha 3 cylinders are great little motors too. I still run an 85 hp that's 20+ years old now that I bought from the Col. not long before he shut the place down. The thing's never missed a beat. I knew a bunch of the knuckleheads who worked there too. I remember Bob although I wouldn't have remembered his name if you hadn't mentioned it.

I don't think that I ever knew his background either while the place was open. He was just 'the Col.'

Always wondered why he didn't sell the place to anyone. At least as I recall things, it didn't seem like he'd even tried. Just said time to go and moved on.

Forgot to say with his wife of many years who passed after him. She used to come to the boats shows also with the Col.

That early 90's was a bad time for the boating industry and campers too which he also sold. Loans for boats got hard to get. He had just completed a 1 million dollar expansion, large service bay, New Showroom. and the customers were not coming.

Yep, the boat industry was in bad shape back then after the "luxury tax" deal and things tanking more generally. That's when and why I bought the motor from him. I hadn't even planned on buying it but I was up there one day for another reason and he offered me a ridiculous deal on it so I had to. Got a boat on kind of the same basis elsewhere. Picked up a bunch of other stuff when they were shutting down. A nice motor stand that I still have and use, stainless prop, boat and motor parts, shop manuals. Think I still have a couple of gallons of 2-cycle oil left from then. lol

I was just kind of surprised that he didn't even try to sell it. I remember asking him about it and he was like "Eh... I'm going to Florida." Guess maybe he knew better than me that there just weren't any buyers at the time.

It's kinda random, but my uncle works at the Best Western there on Chain Bridge Road, and there are some rumors as to why the bar there was shut down.
I know it was originally the Peppermint Lounge, then becoming Alexander's before closing as the Taj Bar and Grill, but the manner in which it was left is a little odd, and seems like it was abandoned in a hurry due to a possible mishap.

If anyone knows anything it would be really cool to find out so I can share it.

Take a look at page 11 of this thread down near the bottom of the page there is a picture and some info about the old holiday inn. That bar was a hot spot back in the 1980s back when a DWI was just a couple ASAP classes and a thousand bucks. I drove home to Clifton from that place drunk off my ass a hundred times. Thank God I never hurt anyone.

I thought I read on this site under Crazy Local Stories you Remember that there was a murder at this Holiday Inn maybe in the mid-70s?

In its prime the late 70's. Way to fancy for a hillbilly. But I knew folks that went there often, It was a popular place. And the Ranch House across the street on 123 had a great breakfast and good steak for a decent price. The place was packed weekends.

At the "T" intersection, I think it was Sunset Hills Road. If you turned right it took you past 3 or 4 'company" houses that I think belonged to the A. Smith Bowman Distillery. I think it ended up near the distillery grounds and Temporary Road. If you made a left turn, there was a feedlot not far from the intersection, where the distillery fed sour mash to their herd of beef cattle..Most days, you could smell that mash in downtown Herndon as soon as they dumped it into the feed troughs. At some point after making the left hand turn, the road became Spring Street and took you into Herndon..

I remember the Putt Putt being there in the early 1970's near where the Harley Shop is today. I played the game at least once with the little cards and pencils.

Yep. Peppermint Lounge and then Alexanders in the 90's. My friends girlfriend worked there and used to steal a bottle of booze a night for our apartment. Bartender/Manager was a lush that filled his coffee cup with liquor. They used to get busted all the time for people betting money at the pool tables. Got rough in there some times and finally Holiday Inn said "no more". They refused to open a bar in there up until the time they left. I was going to George Mason at the time and most of my dinners were a cheap draft beer and their "all you can eat happy hour buffet". It was actually pretty good.

Thats #57 and #58 returning empties and cement to potmac yard.these two units rarely made the trek east. They were normally stored at Leesburg. They would meet at herndon to switch with the larger alcos which would have been to heavy for the trip across goos creek.

It was a scary situation but ended well as he needed pizza and Ice cream and traded that for letting the hostages out.But he was in there overnight. Do you know if he got any serious time for it. I remember seeing Carrol Buraker the police chief at the time giving a update to reporters in front of the school. I was working in the ADC at the time and the next day when they booked him in I remember he had a leather rough swade jacket with the white fake fur on it western style.. He was slapped into the rubber room for a while and they watched him then let out into gen pop. He made trusty pretty fast, I ate lunch with him a couple times in the trustees maint/deputies dining room he was a good kid it seemed who went off the deep end.

I remember it differently and thought that the young guy who barged into the school (with a gun?) was a boyfriend of a young teacher. I was across town at Irving and have a vague recollection that this happened in the morning, but I went into school anyway. Or maybe I remember hearing about this on the news after school was out? Anyone else remember who has a clearer memory?

The operators didn't pay the Bills, The hotel just decided it was better to keep it closed.

Buckingham, was in Arlington, VA going down Rte. 50, Arlington Blvd toward or near Fort Myer and Arlington Cemetery.

I grew up near this theater in the 1950 to 1979, in Sleepy Hollow, on South Street. I go by there now just to look around, the JV Restaurant is still there, the daughter runs it now. Saw many Elvis movies there, the last one I saw there was Barberella.

They misspelled the girlfriend's last name wrong -- it's Rebecca (Becky) Golas, who attended West Springfield in the early 80's. She was completely humiliated by his stunt.

The street I lived on, South Street in Sleepy Hollow, ran behind here, paralle to Rte. 50. We walked all the time to get the best soft service ice cream and across the highway was the Jefferson Theater. There is still a Frozen Dairy Bar to the left in a strip center they built they sell Pizza and Ice Cream, not quite as good as back then, I guess they use less cream. They still have the old machines, somewhere, so I'm told. My brother John worked at the car wash that is also behind here, it was his first job when he was 14.

@Janie - if you look thru this thread, you will find an old pic of the Jefferson Theater, a cpl pics of the ORIGINAL Dairy Bar, as well as pics and an ad for Buckingham Theater :)

Having said that, I guess in a way I haven't seen any pictures of segregated buildings, washrooms, fountains, etc. They are way before my time and would be interested to see them. Someone once told me that the Pentagon has 4 bathrooms next to each other in most places, MENS - WOMENS - MENS - WOMENS. They said that it was because they used to be segregated. Is that even true?

In the rear parking lot of the Fairfax County Courthouse. the old one on Rt 123 there was a building that was the "colored " restrooms. It was there many years and can be seen in a lot of pictures. It was closed as a bathroom back in the 60's.

I lived in Norfolk in 1966-67, I never saw any signs there, prior to 66 there must have been some.

I only have seen one of the colored signs once in my life. In Georgia in 1970 coming from Ca. to Nova. The interstates through the southern states were not finished because of resistance to the 1965 civil rights act. In Georgia it was a two lane road 90 miles long with small towns along the way. Stopped at a old gas station and there it was, two bathrooms and the sign "colored only".

This was the Fairfax location off Fairfax Blvd. (next to Dominion Bank building) probably 1980. I was working at the Dominion Bank around that time and vividly remember it.

I worked in the Pentagon for 31 years.

There are an inordinate number of bathrooms, even for a building of that size. The way the story goes, there are so many bathrooms because they were intended to be segregated as was the practice in Virginia at the time. Supposedly, President Roosevelt was touring the facility as it neared completion and asked why there were so many bathrooms. When told the reason, he ordered that they NOT be segregated.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame was made in 1949.

So that dates the photo (if the Jefferson was a first-run house back then).

The car on the right is a '49 or '50 Ford. Looks like it has a spotlight. They were popular back then so it may or may not be a police car.

Is that the Jefferson theater that was on Annandale Rd. near Rte.50? If so, it must've moved a slight bit

They had reconfigured the entrance to the side facing Annandale Rd. widening the lobby. Baskin Robbins took a small part of the original front. The sign was changed sadly. Sleepy out.

Yes - Mike's was near Engleside area on Richmond Highway and Andrea's was at Fordson Rd and Richmond Highway - both south of Alexandria. Andrea's sold out maybe 15 years ago? Don't know if Mike's is still there

Andrea's was a family-run Greek restaurant next to the Hybla Valley McDonald's - served pizza, moussaka & souvlaki. Pizza was Greek style - a little greasy. I went to school with Kolas Kyriakos whose family owned the place.

Probably at least 3 years now. The buildings there boarded up.

The Springfield Hilton! I always thought that place was just so glamorous.

My high school boyfriend took me to the Hilton for Sunday Brunch - he was 18 (and legal drinking age) and I was just 17.

Next did stay there, but often used the first floor bathrooms as an easy access to steal toilet paper and build up our arsenal to t.p. our mortal enemies' houses (girls and guys) in W Springfield.
