Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Duh, I'm Robb Spewak, I know everything about television in the 1960's and 1970's and I think that makes me intelligent! I bray into the mic at Mike's painfully unfunny banter! Duh! Oh, and also, I think I am funny!
I'd like to see a Rob Speewak show, free of Mike. It might be interesting for a late-night shift (11pm-3am), where Ron & Fez used to thrive when they started in NYC.
Agreed - pretty fucking tasteless and no chance of any humor even peeking through that.

Would Mike like to rough house in the bath tub with me in the Bahamas?

I haven't heard from him since I saw him putting on that Santa suit and fiddling with all those plumbing parts last week.

Well, 12 minutes into the first show of 2009 and it sucks. I am going to force myself to listen to the whole show today. If it sucks, I am done with the show for good.
Mike O'Meara pretending to be erudite and knowledgeable while interviewing this guy about Afghanistan may be one of the funniest things I ever heard on the show. Unintentionally funny, mind you, but funny nonetheless.

Also, Mike was in a beer softball league in Catonsville for Paradise Tavern in the early 80's - even though he didn't show up half the time. So, maybe we can add that to his vast knowledge of sports. He didn't have a lot of speed in the field but knew how to party after the game.
This Mike Character is a riot. Now he's talking about Charles Barkley getting his dicked sucked in his car while drunk. Wow what content this show has.
I listened to a bit of the show tonight. It sounds like they are trying to do some of the old D&M shtick. First, Mike was doing an interview with Robb as Ehud Barack. Except he was doing the voice of Jackie Mason. It was so-so comedy wise, until he called Robb a Nazi. That was kind of funny. Then, for the audio vault, they played the horrid clips of Dick Clark doing the Rockin' New Year's Eve....with his stroke palsy. It was one of the funnier things I have heard in a while, though not quite up to the job Don used to do on clips like this. However, it did remind me of how good the original show concept was. If Mike wasn't so hellbent on trying to be the anti-Don...you know, the guy who kept him employed for 25 years...he might be able to actually salvage his show.
FYI - The most telling sign was the ads. Almost no local content. All I heard was Public Service Announcements, promo spots and national spots that were probably brokered out of NY and probably provide some pretty small revenues to the station. WJFK is in big-time trouble running so many free PSAs in prime drive-time.

Listened to the first segment hoping they might talk about their vacations (a la Don). One of the first things they did was laugh about the death of the president's cat. It's one thing to really dislike a man's politics, but to express glee at something that, no doubt, made the the Bush's pretty sad is pathetic.
Looks like Mike and crew are as classy as they are funny.
Enjoy the unemployment line, Mike, you worthless cocksucker.
I did not catch any of the MOM show today, but was driving in the early afternoon, and BigO and Dukes made note of the fact that there would be significantly more "show" and less commercials going forward, as if that were a good thing (which it ordinarily would be). All I could think is that the station can not come anywhere close to selling the amount of commercial time that they have in the past and would like to now, and are trying to put a positive spin on it. Despite the (new, I think) station ads hyping "personality radio" or whatever they are calling it, all I could hear were the death bells tolling for one or more of these shows.
Laughing about the death of a pet, regardless whose pet it is, is not only unfunny, it smacks of desperation. I hope the 23rd is the last day for this terrible show. It really needs to go.

This shit about Don's wife is stupid. If you have a beef about MOM that is fine, but when you start attacking Don's wife and her death, it makes me realize what kind of fucking losers in life are on here. Act your age.

That whole incident is kind of legendary around here. But you are right. There is more than enough carping to do about Mike.

Isn't that SOP for deejays, though? A few format changes are 'open,' most are 'open secrets' (and hence make it to DCRTV and here), and some are closed to all but highest management. For all but the first, deejays will act like nothing is going to change even if everyone and his maiden aunt know what's going to happen.
If MO'M is going to leave against his will, I suspect only CBS execs in NYC and a couple of folks here know all the details. They may also be trying to negotiate a graceful exit for Mike and/or figure out what to do with Robb and the others.
This of course presumes competence among CBS radio management, and opening a sports talker (a low-ratings format to begin with) when the competition (located on a strong AM stick and two decent FM sticks to cover the SW and SE suburbs) is owned by the same folks that own the town's football team doesn't strike me as overly bright.

The only way to make that format work in this market is to get the salaries down. That means blowing out O'Meara and company and renegotiating with The Junkies (seriously, who else is going to hire them for what JFK is currently paying them?). If WJFK becomes a sports talker, it may never get above 15th place. That's why they need to bring down the salaries. Having a sports talker with the current talents' salaries makes absolutely no sense at all.
I listened to the show yesterday. They did 2 lame phone interviews and the power of 10. That was it. I can't listen to that crap anymore. If I wanted to listen to interview radio, I would listen to NPR. If they show is just going to continue to be boring interviews and the power of 10, do they really need Mike,Buzz,Robb,Beth-Ann,Joe & Katie? 6 people had three weeks to come up with something and they delivered nothing. Why is WJFK paying 6 peoples salaries for a last place show on a last place station? At the very least they can fire 4 of those people and it won't change the show.
I don't know why they don't just start doing the don and mike show without don... I mean, all the same games, same format. Call it the "Don-less and Mike Show"
The D&M show was great to listen to because Don, and sometmes Rob & Buzz would share personal stories about vacations, weekends, work etc. The tales were usually funny and well-told. That's a big part of what's missing from the current show. It seems like they are trying harder since back from vaca, but still missing the mark.

It's called Big Fat Mike's Big Fat Ego. He can't admit that the show sucks when he does it his way.
And I dont know why they go to the trouble of having on-air guests (ie. the dude with the limo/security company in FL) when all Mike does is talk over them and not let them get a word in edge-wise. Even when conducting interviews, all Mike wants to do is hear himself.
It is pretty sad though that the WJFK team is now boasting that they have fewer commercials (like that's a real selling point for listeners). I find the commercials more entertaining the TMOS.....

Seriously, half the ads on Mike's show were PSAs. It made no sense to fill up that air time with crap about "worthy causes."
I think what is really killing the radio stations is the drop in car ads. I hardly hear them on radio anymore. Dealerships usually throw ass-loads of money into local ads. Not now.

This is really the whole point behind these 23 pages of funny posts on this forum. Don was the point man, producer and star of the show. People tuned in to listen to him and Mike and everyone else were just sidekicks. This formula was successful for over twenty years. Now, they cannot do the Don and Mike show without Don.
The Mike O'Meara show was doomed for failure from the start. As has been noted in this forum, it's like if NBC had replaced Johnny Carson with Ed McMahon and kept everything else the same. If they could have revamped the show, changed personnel and format - it might have had a chance. Now, it is just a shell of its former self, yet everyone still tunes in out of habit. People cannot accept it for what it is - the Don-less and Mike Show. Mike is also an asshole in person to those who support him which causes all the hostility and emotion against him that you read in this forum.
Good analogy about Johnny/Ed. Just today Mike mentioned that he wasn't going to do an Elvis bit that a caller requested. He said it was Don's baby and he wasn't going to steal it. You could kind of sense Mike's frustration. To top it off, when the guy called, has said hello to Don. Mike was noticeably 'irked' & I can't halfway blame him. Sad...

O'Meara did a long segment on hockey. He actually sounded like he knew something about the sport.
I'm going to quit coming to read this thread because it depresses me and I long of the D&M good old days (around 1991 - 2000 was good vintage, IMO). I read some of the threads over at the Radio Gods forums and there's someone saying that they just listen to Big O & Dukes podcasts on their drive home, instead of TMOS live. Sad...
And it's pretty transparent that they've all been given an edict to talk more sports. I thought the DC area already had access to sports stations. It gets kind of monotonous hearing the Junkies then Big O and then Mike Omeara talking about the same sports stuff. And when they conduct on-air interviews of sports figures, they're not too interesting............

What's funny is that Snyder's people must have caught wind that people are dissatisfied with the 24/7 Redskins coverage on WTEM because in the last couple of days they have actually talked about Georgetown basketball and The Caps. That is the first time I heard those discussed by the local guys since Snyder acquired WTEM. Maybe he is trying to head WJFK off at the pass.

Speaking of Big O and Dukes, they have the guy starring in the movie "Notorious" as a guest on this morning. What the fuck does Beth Ann do? She can't get shit for guests and Big O and Dukes, who probably book their own guests, are knocking down big ones all of the time. Beth Ann needs to go.

I'm not doubting Allah. It's just that Mike has a really big ass. I mean, disproportionally large even for a guy his size.

Not to hijack the thread (no pun intended, Sheikh), but I've got a question for you. If I'm married, but convert to Islam, am I still entitled to the 72 virgins upon my sad demise?
I am honestly shocked at how many haters there are on this board. Mike is definitely a funny guy. Lets give him a chance to see what he can do on his own before shoveling dirt on him.
And dissing his girlfriend is just stupid. There's no reason for it.
Lets not piss on both the man's work life and home life, shall we?

Snappy comeback for comments posted back in April.
That said, I think the verdict is in. Mike needs to go.
Too bad that instead of constructive ADULT criticism the people here prefer to make childish digs that could be found on grammar school bathroom walls. And the "jokes" about Frieda's dead corpse are both tastless and repulsive!
If you have specifics, then state them. I'm sure someone at WJFK reads this, and then could use it to make the show better. If you aren't part of the solution....Then shut up!

yes please to be martyring yourself by walking into the Mike O'meara show downtown studios and rub beth anne Mcbride's fake plastic decadent breast implants together until they explode and take the whole crew with them. Then and only then you shall earn your place in heaven through martyrdom and virgins who are all 72 years old.
I agree that Mike might be funny or fun when hanging out at a local bar drinking. That said, his overeating, overdrinking, lazy work ethic does not translate into having a good or "hit" radio show. He's like a frat boy who never grows up and is still trying to impress his frat brothers with his stripper girlfriend and even has to name his show "The Mike Omeara Show" and "Mike Omeara Show Website" and "Mike Omeara.Com" and "Mike Omeara Enterprises". He sounds like that goof Senator wannabe from Illinois who already has a tombstone for himself that says "Trailblazer." A bunch of egotistical slobs........

There have been lots of suggestions on this site, from firing Beth Ann to giving Robb and Buzz less to do to having Mike actually prepare for his shows.
Sounds to me like you may be one of those WJFKers who read this site.
DCRTV stating what is obvious to everyone but management at WJFK....
Notable Quotable - 1/9 - "On Thursday, we're going to talk to a beekeeper." Mike O'Meara today announcing his star-studded line-up of WJFK show guests for next week.....
Seriously, how many producers does Mike have? Three...four? Fire them!
Big O and Dukes are running circles around these people with fewer resources. This is absurd. Fire Beth Ann!

Notice how they never specify whether or not the 72 virgins are male or female?
Because in the Arab world, guys are for fun, girls are for babies.

Give him a chance!?!?! We've been giving him a chance since last April. Mike pissed away the ratings he used to have when Don was there. The show now is boring in the extreme. And few things are more dull than a boring radio show. The ratings prove me right.

I heard that. And they have Anne Coulter on today. Someone must have smacked lazy-ass Beth Ann around. Let's see how long this lasts.
I don't listen to the Mike O'Meara show anymore but keep up with things on this web site. I am an old Don fan who felt that Mike added little to the old show in the first place. I have tried to listen to Mike's show on the web site but it tends to put me to sleep. Reading this forum is far more entertaining.
why does rob continually jump into mike's impersonations to say 'who are you?'? he interrupts constantly, rob never did that on the DaM show.
is it supposed to be funny? rob giggles while he does it but clearly that's from the skilled mimicry

impersonated must be repeated every x numbers of seconds blah blah etc.
mike told rob to do it. s0?:

Mike's good impressions consist of Bob Barker, Regis Philbin and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Other than those, I usually have no fucking idea who he is supposed to be. His worst include Simon Cowell, George W. Bush (who sounds like Mike with a southern accent) and pretty much everyone else.

Ann Coulter nailed Mike today. She said, "You have five minutes to ask a question and give me one sentence to answer it. What is this?"
I heard a tease during the Junkies that Ann Coulter was going to be on "at 5pm"- funny how they gave an exact time, for me listening to the whole show just to hear Ann Coulter would be a deal breaker. I tuned in at 5 til and they were yacking about how Coulter had postponed to later.Fuck waiting.
Ann is a professional provocatuer and attention whore on the lines of Madonna and Michael Moore, but I think she's a good writer and an expert at nailing liberal hypocrisy. I was suprised that TMOS was able to swing a guest of such great stature compared to the boobs they've been doing interviews with.
Did anybody suffer through TMOS and hear the interview? Coulter is a better writer than live guest (imho) but I'm sure she verbally cleaned O'Smegmas Ted Kennedy campaigning clock.

marion barry and morgan freeman are two of my personal favorites. don's blackberry was the best bit i've ever heard, absolutely no hyperbole at all.

Somebody please explain to me what the hell his "Charlie" character is supposed to be? I've never understood the falsetto voice and stupid attempts at humor. Invariably, Robb will laugh hysterically. Even Don thought it was funny!? I don’t know any more than that because when I used to listen to D&M and I heard that, I would turn the station so fast your head would spin. Most un-funny shit I think I’ve ever heard in my life. I wouldn’t have thought that was funny even in eighth grade.
I just don’t get it. Is it supposed to be satirical, or is it a genuine attempt to be funny?
That's Charley Stuangstabalac, he grew up in an orphange with his brother (Matthew?) where they used to take the boys' temperatures a LOT. Then Charley burned down the orphanage. Way funnier than anything that starved-for-attention ass Robb has ever said, ever. Robb Spewak - ratings poison.
The BlackBerry bit was pretty funny, as was Jack Kent Cooke (I'd forgotten about that one) Most of Mikes other impressions blow hog, particularly Tony Soprano and anytime he tries to do a Southern accent.
Charlie is minor league, the jokes are OK sometimes but the voice is annoying. Resident retard Tom Gavin used to like it a lot. Don used to deal with the goofballs like Gavin, Murphy etc a lot better, used to "get something out of them" if that's possible.
I wonder if O'Mearas little girls ever do a google search on "Mike O'Meara"? That is how I found this site. I hope they don't read about their future mother Karla. I think it would be pretty tough to have a stripper as a mom.

Maybe Mike should start "do"ing. His show is in 23rd fucking place.
