I just spoke with someone on the business line at the station. He said that "Mike fell under the weather today, so that's why it's Best of". Not sure if that's the truth, but that's the line they're giving...

Well let's state the obvious - not only are O'Meara and The Junkies boring but they are all feeling the effects of our down economy.

Companies are pulling back radio advertising dollars and listeners don't have the time to hang out and listen to radio programming. Listeners have to worry about keeping their jobs and concentrating on work.

WRONG! in trying times, people are dying to be entertained.

IF Mike O could do that, he'd be prospering.

How else can you explain the PPM success of:
Elliot on dc101
Diamond on 1073

If they are winning, it's because the CONTENT wjfk is putting out sucks ass.

PS: Mike O - good time for a sick day. That'll save the sinking ship....

Notice that almost all of the advertising on The Junkies now is for live shots at bars? How much money could they be making off of that? I imagine half of the sponsorship packages are in-kind for contests, etc. Their revenues must be really low these days.

We find it's always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there's less chance of an "incident" if you do it at the end of the week.

I actually am a fan of TMOS, a bit. But, along with that I certainly can see validity in a lot of the criticisms in this posting thread. I would have to disagree with many about R. Spewack - I actually think he's somewhat funny now in comparison to his time on D&M.

Jim Norton was on the Junks and O and Dukes today was reminded me about how good JFK was when they had first rate talent on. Norton is basically the 3rd wheel- a Robb Spewack of the O and A Show but he is strong enough to carry alone had me laughing my ass off today..

Norton clowned O'Meara ( and Geronimo) pretty hard about his abysmal washout in New York, maybe there is still some bad blood (?)

Nortons late show at the State Theater is sold out but I'm going to try and get in somehow anyway...

My 2009 Prediction

O and A return to mornings NOrton was on 2 JFK shows today, testing the water(?)
anad O and A have just been canned from Boston and will probably work cheap to get back in this big market..

Junks move to middays

O and Dukes to drivetime

O'Meara sulks alone and drinks after giving some phony speel about "needing some time off kinda like Don did"....

FREE radio (terrestial) should be booming right now, even though advertising is down, people aren't buying satradd scripts now and still need entertaining!

Okay I'll have to agree that the show is not what it once was but I don't think it's been the same since Don's wife died he became very bitter and angry wich is totally understandable.Mikes show is not the greatest to say the least but Mary mother of God are the sports junkies some of biggest waste of air time!I mean saying WHATS UP? on every phone call how tired and lame is that?That had to be at least 8 years ago the last time that was funny

I agree that the show started to slide after Freda died. That is understandable.

But Mike isn't Don. You would think Mike would be doing everything possible to make sure the show is a hit. He isn't. He's phoning it in. He's drinking on the air instead of coming up with bits, etc, that are funny. The guests Beth Ann is lining up is like a who's who of mediocre PR dredge that is being pitched to the show. Nobody is putting any effort into it. Nobody is making an effort to make it work.

He didn't say it was a secret...said 106.7 would go classical or lite rock

Agreed on the drinking shows. I always turn it when they're doing that one. I think that my favorite segment is the "Audio Vault". Anyone else find it funny?

The Audio Vault is funny only because it is the only segment where none of the idiots are talking. But it does feel lazy on their part. Basically they play the audio of clips that have been on YouTube for months. Hardly inspired radio.

the entire format/lineup at wjfk will be evicted, so to speak

total flushing of the brand/format and replacing with another niche not filled
in the dc market

sad, really. compelling radio would still draw, if howard and don g were still anchoring the drives at the once highly rated wjfk fm

i agree with others, a new format will certainly replace the current lineup soon. remember, this station was jazz before it was a talk/music hybrid. and there is no jazz station currently in the dc market

i know someone else also predicted classical, i also see that as a possibility.

but the way it is now? 30 days at most, seriously.

CBS is moving to clear out bottom line company wide.

for wjfk, last place results equals TITANIC time

Let me redo this for the AssHat.

Look at all the fat that could be trimmed:

1.Joe answers phones for 4-5 callers a day = $$$$$$$$$$$$
2.Katie has to man the dump button = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
3.Beth Ann lines up junk guests = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
4.Buzz responds to instant messages all day = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
5.Rob says a couple of words per show = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
6.Mike does the show = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
7.oh yeah and the Buzz Babes and Events = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Then add the Junkies
8. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
9. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
10. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
11. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
And the Junkies support staff Producer, call screener, dump button, Junkettes, events etc.
12. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
13. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
14. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
15. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Then add O & D
16. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
17. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Add their support staff Producer, call screener, dump button, etc
18. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
19. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
20. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
21. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Then add Health Insurance, 401k, etc.
22. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
23. = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

And all this money and effort for LAST PLACE station that is getting beat by a freaking gospel station. You have at least a 23 person salary staff that is coming in LAST PLACE. Compare this to a music format.

Board Op for music = $$$$$
Music = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Ratings - better than last
Sales staff Happy that they have a product that they can sell.

So, could there be an overall trend in terrestrial radio to purge the talk radio format? I imagine that it will stay in satellite radio, though. I could see Big O & Duke, as well as The Junkies, landing satellite shows. TMOS, not so much.

I pine for the days of Howard, Opie and Anthony and D&M. I wouldnt even mind G. Gordon coming back. At least he could generate some spirited debates (even though his ego is as big as his head).

I would put my nickel with the cancelling of the entire lineup. I agree that the Junkies and Big O can probably find jobs elsewhere but the Junkies probably wont command the salaries the are getting now. I cant imagine that Big O are getting too much $$$ anyways because they are relatively "new to the scene."

I think WJFK made a huge mistake by keeping Mike onboard after Don retired. It was perfectly clear to everyone that Mike was out of his element even when he substitued or took the helm when Don was out sick or on leave. He never sounded comfortable as the lead. Don was a natural and was born to be in and around radio. Mike is a lazy, dopey drunken frat boy that has never grown up and has never held a real job. Mike admittedly did little prep on the D&M show and would just show up to work 15 minutes before air time.

Yeah, I don't think O and A are coming back, wishful thinking on my part. I saw Jim Norton at the State last night and ask if there was any chance they'd be back, I'd hoped for a "Keep posted, man" or some kind of cryptic answer, but his body language and answer seemed to say it wasn't happening.

These big radio guys have got to make temporary concessions in the economic snarl. If O and A came back to WJFK for a reduced price, they might be able to build a following bigger than they did last time and get paid more when contracts renew and finacial times improve..

I like the Junks, O and Dukes and I'll be sorry to seem them go, but I am sure they will land on their feet.WJFK used to stay on my radio, I imagine now it's not on in peoples cars in the morning because it wasn't on during drivetime.It's not really a "lead in" but I'm sure TMOS is f****ing things up for everyone.

Pulling back the curtain -- I'm in Chicago and have been a casual Dahl listener over the last 10 or so years. He, too, had turned stale and repetitive...but on his worst day and with his worst ensemble cast, Steve Dahl could "radio" Mike O'Meara under the table.

Sorry to see Steve go... Agree that the Junkies and Big O & Dukes should be ready for the worst (although the latter is best positioned to continue in radio somewhere)...

...but I can't wait to see the clock run out on Mike's show.

I don't want to take food off of anyone's family (thanks, W), so I hope he lands somewhere doing something... but solo radio just isn't in the cards.

Don knew that a counter to Buzz's political biases was necessary to keep the show exciting and interesting as well as edgy. Mike just agrees with everything Buzz spouts which turns the show into a just a boring political diatribe. Mike's always touting his "education" at American U, and Don never even attended college but he had more on the ball, knew more about radio and was generally more intelligent than Mike. The abysmal pile of crap that the show has turned into since Don left proves that.

A strong man knows his own weaknesses. I think Don understood Mike's strengths much better than Mike knows his own weaknesses. I think Don used discipline and focus to make everyone better on his watch, even Beth Ann. Mike, on the other hand, has let everyone do what they like, not what they are good at. The end result is a crappy show.

All you people sit on here and hate, the bottom line is the show is different then D&M, but that doesn't mean bad. JFK would be making a massive mistake if they lost O&D or the O'Meara show. Re: The Mike O'Meara Show

That's right - it's got to be killing Mike that Jack Diamond is pulling better ratings that him. Back in the early 80's, Jack Diamond used to be Mike O'Meara's boss on WYRE in Annapolis/Grasonville. Mike developed a deep hate for Mr. Diamond and enjoyed knocking him for 20+ years on the Don and Mike show. Now that Mike is "on his own" - he's losing his show in January while Jack Diamond rolls on.

Ratings are down for regular radio across the board, first of all. Secondly, the humps on this board can cherrypick whatever statistics best fit their arguments, and since this is basically a meeting place for haters hoping the show goes off because they are so sad and bitter that Don left (and left the show in capable, funny hands, btw). Finally, the show puts up big numbers over the podcast, meaning markets that stupidly got rid of D&M (Philly for one) or have jumped since the switch still have vast numbers of listeners that are loyal and enjoy.

Everybody's got their own tastes. most women I know hate Norton. Public popularity shouldn't mean much, I hate Orpah like a bad headache, she has millions of fans.

Consider this though, Norton did 2 shows at the State Friday, I was at the 2nd and it was sold out, I think the first one was too, probably 1,000 total for the night paying thirty a head to see a guy who 1) isn't local 2) isn't on free radio in the market 3) doesn't have a 25 year history in DC 4) is technically not the marquee star of the show he is on and is often not present several days of the week.

D&M used to do the Vegas Style Revues, What has Mike been able to do? I know he'll do a FREE pumpkin smash or something every so often with maybe 50 people turning out. Or he'll commendably do a charity ride which will go on with him or without him.

Maybe TMOS have a few thousand people in the area that really like it, that's not going to keep it on air. If it was really intelligent humor or something that would have a cult following, OK, but most of us agree the show is very poor and a waste of a time slot we used to enjoy.

Radio ratings are not down overall as 'mike' wrote. Ask Diamond or Elliot or wtop or WASH

I won't go as far as calling people on this thread haters, nor will I agree with 'DECoach' that TMOS is spectacular. I think that the show has started to fizzle a bit, but I certainly see potential in it. I think that the 'less Buzz' idea that others have suggested is a good start (let him stick with his strength in the news). Also, I agree that Mike should do more impressions - not all are great, but he can be funny doing them (Julia Child a couple of weeks ago was damn funny). Personally, I think that Rob has become much funnier (and, he used to annoy the hell out of me on D&M) - likely improved confidence on his part. If they were smart, they'd have Rob become the new Don. Can't hurt to try? He certainly couldn't fill Don's shoes, but play a similar role.

With the station as a whole, I think that the Junkies have become a strong brand. Someone needs to reign in EB a bit, because he monopolizes the show. A bit more Lurch would be good. Big O & Dukes - I only listen to them a bit (in the car during lunch). They're pretty funny, but their strength lies in their chemistry and Oscar impresses me with his interviews - very professional.

I hope that TMOS can succeed. When I moved up to the DC Metro area in the early 90's the D&M (as well as WJFK, in general) helped me 'connect' with things up here and I appreciate them all of these years for it.

My 2 cents...

I can't see WJFK flipping to classical and competing WETA.

There's also no adult standards station in the DC area although I can't see an FM station going in that direction. I'd like to see a more powerful AM station like 1390 flip to adult standards.

Smooth jazz, maybe. But why would they be able to succeed where WJZW did not? Is there room for a second Spanish station in the area, maybe a little older-skewing than 99.1?

Maybe a Hot AC station similar to WINC-FM? (Or is that niche already filled by Mix 107.3?)

Might be some behind the scenes negotiating to get O&A back to DC. If that fails, I can't see hot talk lasting much longer -- maybe bringing in Mancow or other DJ's who're not in the DC area to replace the current crop, but the barrel's getting pretty thin. With 630 and 570 getting the conservative talk show hosts, I don't think 'third string Republican talkers' is really the path to success.

If they were feeling really daring maybe bringing in Air America and seeing how it can do on a station that's actually listenable throughout the area -- are *any* of AA's stations more than 50 watts on a duct-taped antenna?

(1260's impossible to receive after dark and their habit of putting healthcare infomercials during drive time has led me to not really listen.)

I'm thinking it'll end up being: smooth jazz, older-trending Spanish, or Hot AC (most directly competing with Mix 107.3). Slight chance of adult standards or Air America, although Clear Channel might be able to nix any switch of the latter from 1260.

Not sure why it is doing that. If you go into the main site, you can search it. As an FYI, he paid about $750K in 2004 for the house and it is now assessed about about $530K.

Now Mike's announcing that "Robert the Angry Mailman" is making an appearance on Friday. He's another overused leftover personaly from the D&M show who has nothing new to add to anything. It's like they're now trying to go backwards and pulling out what they think worked on the D&M Show, even though "Robert" is the epitome of what was wrong with the tail-end of that show (especially when they brought him into studio to spend hours with them). From DCRTV....

CBS Radio is down to only two non-sports-oriented FM guy talkers - the DC area's WJFK and LA's KLSX. Just today, CBS flipped another remnant of the old "Free FM" post-Howard Stern FM talkers to sports talk - Dallas's KLLI. Coming not long after it ended the guy talk format in Baltimore - then WHFS, now sports talk WJZ-FM, 105.7. With a like move in Detroit, too. Don't forget, CBS previously replaced the guy talk format in NYC and Philadelphia with restored rockers. With WJFK's less-than-impressive Portable People Meter radio ratings, and lack of a strong FM sports talk outlet in DC, could the Nation's Capital be next in line for a CBS FM sports talker? Heck, the morning Junkies could easily go back to their original Sports Junkies slant. 106.7 FM, WJFK, already runs University Of Maryland and University Of Virginia sports. UPDATE: A mysteriously planned recent meeting of CBS Radio's DC and national suits was a hot topic on Tuesday's Mike O'Meara afternoon show on WJFK. Stay tuned.....

...A sports talker might make sense, given that The Junkies and the Midday guys already talk sports. It would also be good to counter-program the Dan Snyder fiasco at WTEM, which acts like the Redskins are the only sports team in town. I really haven't heard WTEM cover much of anything that isn't Redskins related. Almost no talk at all about Maryland Football, Maryland B-Ball, Georgetown B-Ball, Navy Football, Virginia Tech, Mason...nothing. Like NOTHING about any other teams, including the Capitals.

Yeah, JFK might be able to make a go of that, though I'm not sure that is much of a ratings winner, either.

They still have affiliates? I think most of the stations have dropped O'Meara's show. So what if they piss off someone in Wichita. I doubt any revenue they make would be sufficient to offset the losses they are seeing in the DC market.

The funny thing is that Mike is too dumb to see it coming. Even O & D picked up on it. It is kinda like when Don & Mike went to NYC - they didn't make the numbers. That is what it all boils down to. Can you pull in the numbers or not. Mike is such a freaking baby that he thinks it comes down to whether people like you at the station. Mike had over 6 months to pull in the numbers, he didn't, he is done. I bet the sales staff "likes" Mike at WJFK, but will be glad when he is gone and they can start making actually sales. If they can fire Steve Dahl after 30 years of good work, I don't know why Mike thinks he is different.

That's just what this city needs-- two sports talkers. Who'd be on the show-- aren't ESPN and Fox the only real things you can build a sports talker around, ESPN's already spoken for and I can't see CBS running Fox. Plus, the audience for sports talk is pretty small. If lousy ratings are the problem, switching to a format that usually generates lousy ratings won't help.

Not sure if selling the station is an option as asset prices are low. They could switch to something for the next 9-18 months while they ride out the economy and/or figure out what to do. One possibility: an alterna-rocker in the mode of the old HFS?

If the current crop of satellite jocks get let go, Sirius XM may well hire a new set of jocks at cut-rate. Someone kind of sort of making it like the Junkies may be tempted to 'go national' thusly.

I suspect Sirius XM will declare bankruptcy, and someone will come in and buy the assets for a song. Aren't the millstones around their neck (1) the debt incurred to get the satellites up in orbit and (2) Howard Stern's contract? (The Stern apologists will argue that Stern brings in the viewers, which may be true. But it's still a huge expense and satellite radio hasn't gotten ensconced the way cable TV and cell phones have.)

Options: ReplyQuote
Re: The Mike O'Meara Show
Date: December 10, 2008 04:15PM

Most of Stern's compensation was stock options, so I'm not sure what XM/Sirius is putting out for him. I think he is probably one of the few draws for SatRad, but his 1 million listeners or whatever can't generate enough revenue to cover XM/Sirius's debt overload.

I agree on the sports talker. It's not a widely listened to format. Even would be even less so not having the access to the Redskins stuff. Even though Red Zebra is essentially an informercial for the Redskins, the fact is it does appeal to a certain part of the population. Good luck getting much Redskins coverage on a competing radio station.

Maybe sports talk is the way WJFK is going. Dan Snyder can surely afford the station to add to his collection. Big O and Dukes have been spending a lot of time on sports lately, they did an hour plus on the Skins and Zorn. Plus, they are huge on the MMA talk. The Junkies could easily become the SPORTS Junkies again and maybe Rome will run middays. I only like Rome during football season but he's got some year round fans, enough to keep ad revenue, I don't know.

I don't think "personality talk" radio is ready for burial just yet, I think they need new blood. O'Meara is probably a cancer on the rest of the lineup, Don and Mike were truly an anchor for the other shows and the loss of listeners by the Junks and the lack of growth may be at least partially to blame on TMOS dismal lack of edge and originality.

I'd love to see Opie and Anthony back or Ron and Fez. O and Dukes are the future of that station if they retain their format, TMOS is a sad reminder of what once was.

Any word as to how the "suits meeting" went for Big O and Dukes?

Even if the format goes away, I could see CBS slotting their show somewhere else...but I don't know enough about the other CBS properties in the Wash. DC area. Anyone see a possible fit for them? (Just an opinion/observation, but having heard their Arizona shows and a few from Baltimore, they definitely sounded like transplants when they tried to do "live and local" out west.) They'd probably love a shot at satellite (and commanding fairly low salaries probably helps that), but I'm not sure they're ready.

It's a really stupid blowup with Bear the engineer because of a "hum" on the output... and who knew what and when, and who was or wasn't around to fix it.

Hello -- Mike? Voicemail. Email. Text messages. ANY NUMBER of communication channels are available that don't require you to be in the same room with the other party in the conversation.

To skip this vital (and dead simple) step in order to buy yourself 30 minutes of mediocre radio is sad, and disrespectful to your engineer. I hope he quits early and lets your show fade to static before this little charade on Friday has a chance to play itself out.

F$#^in' idiot.

This is where Don and Mike differ. Don used to scream about these things, too. But instead of beating up on the lowly engineer, Don would call Michael Hughes live on the air and roast his nuts. Mike is too much of a pussy to yell at the boss so he beats up an underling instead. What a piece of shit.

Mike isn't getting paid nearly what he did when Don was there. He owns a house that is worth $200K less than what he paid for it. And he is probably still digging himself out financially from the "Hanks Look Around Cafe" debacle.

I guess the question is, how long will it take for Karla to walk once Mike says, "Honey, I think we will need to cut back a little on the spending?"

Oh, and people will try to tell me that SatRad's days aren't numbered...

Sirius XM Launches Abba Channel - 12/11 - Sirius AM is bringing back Abba Radio, a commercial-free channel dedicated to international supergroup. On Sirius-3 and XM-31 from 12/12 to 12/20. Music from the Swedish popsters, plus tracks from the recent Abba-themed flick "Mamma Mia".....

I have never herd such a nonprofessional rant in my life. I have been in TV, (News, and Engineering)for 25 years. If you would have done to me what you did to Bear...I would have put you in the hospital. I would have waited for you and made sure you couldn't have spoke out of that vile hole you call a mouth.

Go be an asshole off the air...Dick.

Way to blindside a guy right before Christmas Mike. I am sure he is going to have a real nice holiday now. The guy didn't even know there was a problem because B.A. and Rob didn't tell him. Your problem Mike is with B.A. and Rob. I can't wait for that lazy fat ass to get shit canned.

And why does he think that the average radio listner cares that he is throwing a holiday party at his house weekend. We are supposed to derive some pleasure or fun out him bragging and talking about it nonstop. Dont hear him bragging much anymore about the ratings.........

Mike craps on his people 24/7 and a shitty holiday party at his house in BFE is supposed to make it all better.

FYI - Mike - You are making people waste their weekends driving 20 miles to your fucking house so they can see your fat, drunken ass bloviate like it bloviates every other day of the week. What a fucking treat!

Steve, you nailed it. As the less-than-manly Chris Kinard tried to tell Mike (and failed to get the point across, apparently) on the air toward the end of this segment, the fault for the communication breakdown lies with Mike's staff (BA, Robb, interns, whomever).

And to whom are these rejects accountable?

That's right. Mike first, then CK.

CK had to step in and bail Bear out because Mike failed to do his job as the marquee talent, which is to direct the heat to either his in-studio producer (Robb), his executive producer (BA), or both.

Buzz? He's just useless.

My $0.02...

That party at Mike's house this weekend is going to be a real blast. Can you just imagine what it is going to be like around 10:30, once Mike is fully loaded? He'll be sitting there in the middle of his party moaning and bitching about how the world is out to get him. He'll have a self-pity party and start crying and whining in front of all of his guests. And they'll all have to stand around, feeling uncomfortable, giving Mike fake assurances while secretly understanding that it was Mike who ruined it for everyone.

Man, I wish I could see that!

Well you can always stop by 9133 Grant Ave., Manassas,
VA if you want. I plan on sending Christmas cards. Mike really puts the "ASS" in ManASSes. Oh, and if you do stop by take plenty of "ones" with you so you can tip Karla.
