I've tuned in this morning to hear some of the 'dysfunctional family show' (I like the Junkies), and every time I end up turning it off because all I hear is Omeara yelling over everybody else, as if they all care about his opinion.

Awful, I wish he would shut the f**k up.

O'Meara thinks his stupid, uninformed opinion is fascinating when in fact it's only of interest to him. That's pretty much the show in a nutshell, it's only for his entertainment, not the audience's. The ratings reflect that.

Mike is like the fat, drunk, opinionated Uncle who comes to Christmas dinner and ruins the family Monopoly game by screaming about "the wheels of capitalism crushing the working man" when his 10-year-old nephew locks up the Park Place/Boardwalk Monopoly.

It's always interesting to hear highly paid jerks like O'Meara and that Burbank turd ranting about capitalism. No doubt they do it because they know they're not worth what they're being paid and the guilt is killing them.

Mike is disgusting. It was horrible the way he ripped up on Shari Licker the other day! What did she ever do to him to get treated with such disrespect and vileness? What the hell is his problem? For him to sit there and bash her personality and then stoop so low by making fun of her hair and her teeth. He is just mean! That poor woman does not deserve to be called all the nasty, hateful things that Mike was spewing. What an absolute creep!!

It seems like they're all now trying to talk more sports. Personally, I think all that can be said about the Redskins has already been said and it's not entertaining to hear them drone on about if for a straight week... Hence, I dont think an all sports format is going to work.

Maybe everyday should be a "dysfunctional show." It's about as pathetic as anything else that they've come up with. Not much fun hearing 10 disc jockeys talking over each other....

Because this is the last MOM show of the year, and very likely forever, I tuned in today for the first time in months. I gave it two breaks before the boredom became so overwhelming that I couldn't continue. I honestly do not believe that radio can get much worse than the MOM show.

talk of mom getting canned after today or on 1.23.09 has come up several times on this thread. are this claims credible at all or just wishful thinking?

me thinks the latter as likely only top brass would know, and they shouldn't be down here in the basement of the science building with us.

the dysfunctional show sucks. mom is way overmodulated and has been for the past six hours. haven't they learned from snl that stretching bad material into longer material isn't the solution?

If a little bit of overmod is the only technical problem you've heard today, you're doing great. Sounds like they're using both studios, and the sound quality of the podcasts (the only thing I can get here in Chicago, as the stream is blocked from work) is really abysmal.

The Cheech and Chong reference DID make me laugh. Nice.

I'm starting to wonder, too. I've kept my eye on DCRTV expecting to see a formal announcement of a format flip and have been surprised not to see it. I think 1/23 is the absolute LATEST that it might happen, but it could be that Dan Mason and co. (and the new cluster general mgr in DC, whose name escapes me) might be showing a bit of humanity and waiting until after the holidays. Still, if it's coming, Mike and his crew HAVE to know about it already.

How about the Big O and Dukes friction today? I LOVE hearing the true Dukes come out. Oscar's a girl in a man's clothes, and I think Chad's got his number. If Oscar's going to "back door" the show by looking at alternative deals/revenue streams, Chad ought to start shopping new on-air partners. He's got the chops, but he needs a stronger partner.

Two more cents. Keep this up, and I'll go broke on this board.

Maybe the buzzing in Mike's headphones has something to do with the overmodulation. If this overpaid asshat knew how to run a board like a minimum wage board-op, this wouldn't be a problem.

I think the MOS would do better in ratings if they brought on a co-host who was an african american or female comedian=type (and get rid of Buzz). Rob could pick up the news and entertainment stuff. Buzz offers absolutely no comedy or sponteneity to the show....

I truly think that after 20 years, everyone is pretty much sick of Mike. I think Howard Stern is thinking of pulling the plug and going out gracefully. I think Mike should do the same before he goes out in flames......

Howard Stern is worth several hundred million dollars. O'Meara is probably living paycheck to paycheck. Mike won't go anywhere until they show him the door...which they will.

That, in a nutshell, sums up the MOM show, lack of effort. Yes, it surprising that an "educated" college graduate such as O'Meara would be unaware of what a Ponzi scheme is but he had ample time to review before the show and could have easily found out. He puts no effort into the show, and it shows.

That Dysfunctional Family Christmas thing was really sad. These guys basically crapped on the air for 13 hours and then applauded themselves at the end. One guy called and said, "Mike, I have a bone to pick with you." Mike dropped the call.

If anyone needs further proof that the WJFK line-up is a trainwreck, listen to a few minutes of that podcast. An absolutely pathetic stunt that only highlighted how far WJFK has fallen under the "leadership" of Michael Hughes.

The difference between Mike's show and the D&M Show is that Don understood that Buzz was wooden and boring, so the only time Buzz got to talk was during the news or for the occasional "sexy Buzz" segment.

I thought the same as you, that Mike was capable of being a
solo man. It only took a short while to realize that Mike was
the brains behind the operation...the glue that held the show
together. I have moved on to satellite radio because regular
or "free fm" is so boring. Occasionally I tune in (when I lose
my satellite signal) but it is so embarrassingly bad, like a
car crash broadcast over radio waves. Whoever decided to
bring Beth Ann back made a BIG mistake, she has the most
grating voice. I can't help but think that Don Geronimo is
laughing at how the MOMS has become a show that they used to
make fun of when they were a team.

The problem is Mike is lazy and just tries to wing it every day and it doesn't work. Don was a disciplined and driven hard-ass who made Mike work, which made Mike better. Don basically protected Mike from his self-destructive self. After several months going solo, Mike has basically ruined his own career.

From DCRTV...

DC CBSers Deny JFK Sports Flip Rumors - 12/15 - CBS Radio local sources are shooting down a flurry of new rumors we got late Monday that guy talker WJFK might soon flip to sports talk with a whole new line-up. The station's seen its ratings dip with the new preliminary Portable People Meter electronic radio ratings, which debuted in the DC market in September. The way DCRTV's reading it is that the CBS Radio suits in Lanham really like the Junkies (right), Big O and Dukes, and Mike O'Meara and want to give the current line-up another PPM chance when the official electronic numbers are unveiled in January, with a new 106.7 antenna in place and a return to full power for the station. However, CBS's NYC suits may not be as patient. They've already flipped FM guy talkers, the last remnants of the old post-Howard Stern "Free FM" outlets, to sports in Baltimore, Dallas, and Detroit.....

9 times out of 10, DCRTV gets the scoop right. Sometimes he's a few days early, but I'd bet cash the format flip is a done deal.

CBS has made this move with similar stations in smaller markets. But ALL of those
station were outperforming WJFK.

Don't believe the "PPM is bad" spin. This station was a contender until the day Don Geronimo left. The numbers in diary form showed that once Geronimo's farewell was cycled thru the 90 day diary circle.

Translated: By August, O'Meara was down 60% across the board with the old diary method.

By Oct, with PPms, it was down to 80-90% in losses.

And that's JUST in anfternoon drive.

The Lanham suits are denying it because they don't want to lose their jobs by confirming it.

I don't think it is a coincidence that WJFK has been going after all of this sports programming. I bet on January 1 Mike and Big O & Dukes are gone, replaced by Dan Patrick and other CBS network programming. The Sports Junkies may be back in the morning. If I were WJFK, I would work to renegotiate the contract, basically saying EB and JP don't do shit, so here is what we are going to pay you...X Amount. Lurch and Cakes can either take it all or take a pay cut to keep EB and JP on the show.

There comes a time when upper management has to take responsibility. They are just as much to blame for the poor ratings because they choose to keep the Mike O’Meara show even though it loses numbers every month. I think heads should roll, but at this point you have to start targeting upper management for letting this train wreck go on for as long as it did.

You would think. Michael Hughes has pretty much destroyed every station he has touched. I don't understand why the radio industry keeps people like this around. He obviously doesn't know what he is doing.

If JFK can get the Orioles, Wizards, English DC United, and Capitals, they *might* have a shot at being a sports talker (I assume they have an AM station to serve as a backup). The Redskins sure as heck aren't going to work with Sports Talk WJFK.

Otherwise, I'd give a cobbled together sports talker two years tops. This rush towards competing in a format that's never pulled big numbers against a fairly well-established sports talker that has the Redskins contract locked up forever just seems like it wouldn't work to me.

But I've never worked in radio, just lurked on DCRTV a fair bit over the years.

The Sports Talk format might work if you cut payrolls and use a lot of piped-in cheap stuff. For instance, how much would it cost a station to run Capitals, Terps and Nationals games? A fraction of what they are paying their so-called "talent" these days. And unlike the Redskins, those teams want the publicity and probably won't gouge a station for the air time. If you make the content cheap enough, being in 21st place isn't going to kill you.

True. If we get too much lower WJFK risks losing out to the brokered AM stations. Do those even enter the Arbitron sweepstakes?

Even when Don steered the show in a direction I didn't care for, I listened because HE made it fun/interesting and despite his on air actions, had THICK SHIN and could take it as well as give it. And he was one funny motherucker.
I had high hopes for the solo Mike show, but it is just too stale.

And his attitude is that of a solid winner, who can afford to actr that way.

Just curious, ToneLoc, what do you do that pays 200K per year?

What does it matter what he does for his 200k?

Point was IF they make that much, the Junkies are not worth it.

I make 75K.

I bet on January 1 Mike and Big O & Dukes are gone, replaced by Dan Patrick and other CBS network programming.

Correct except for one thing: it's January 23 that will be the last day.
On January 24 Karla will be available on Match.com

Here's a question for everyone - how does the lousy signal power of WJFK affect the new PPM system for ratings?

I've always experienced problems with picking up a good WJFK signal around the DC area. Today, I was on the GW Parkway around the Claude Moore Park turnoff trying to listen to Big 0 and Dukes and had to switch channels because of the poor reception. I don't think I was that far from Fairfax and have always had problems on Int. 95 near Beltsville where I live. I've always had to pick up the feed from Baltimore and can remember how Don Geronimo used to talk about the lack of quality WJFK signal.

Also, as far as the personal diary method - I think it's obvious that those selected few individuals were fans of WJFK and were causing inaccurate ratings.

The "old" shows Stern/D&M killed in diaries because then the content was so riveting people actually listened for up to 45 min at a stretch...this was re-enforced by going through the diaries, as stations can and used to after the fact AT Arbitron.

IF Stern and Geronimo were stil at the helm, no doubt that the PPM's of WJFK would be better, much better. Could those two do exactly the kind of shows now they did then, no.

But both were/are pros and no doubt would have done better. Geronimo lasted four years after Stern left and the D&M show was still tops in 25-54 throughout.

To claim this measurement somehow shows the other flawed takes away from the RADIO put out by those two guys in particular.

The wjfk signal has been consistently bad. When the STATION was top5 12+, to now. It is all about the CONTENT the frequency is putting out.

As a poster prior accurately noted, the show (O'M) was tanking in diary before PPMs.

Hope this helps to answer the question.

ps: if O'Meara got 3 (t h r e e ) weeks of paid vacation, management should have to pay his salary. it was one thing when the ole d&m show took 3 wks off, they said fuck off cause they had the numbers to back them up. o'meara has no numbers, so why give him a johnny carson vacation when he's giving chevy chase results?

Be fair. MOM's show couldn't suck more but to say that "Don Geronimo" had "thick skin" is laughable. The drug-addled bastard couldn't stand * any * insult, despite delivering dozens of insults per program.

Look, I'm not defending Mike, as he deserves the cancellation he'll soon get; but stop acting as though Mike Sorce (who was busted for DRUGS) was the end all and be all. Above all, "Don Geronimo," had the thinnest skin of any DJ around. All he did was bitch and whine about anything which didn't go his way; he was, in short, a pussy who milked a tragic death for personal gain. Really, he wasn't so special although his innate talent was ten times that of Mike O'Meara.

"o'meara has no numbers, so why give him a johnny carson vacation when he's giving chevy chase results?"

Said contract was doubtless spearheaded by Mike Sorce back in Feb-Mar (or earlier) for Mike.

While I like to remind people that "Don Geronimo" was hardly the god they seem to moronically remember him as, it must also be said in fairness that Sorce went beyond the call of duty in helping O'Meara; hence the extended vacation periods.

But the shows were better when he was there.

Most people I know take all of their vacation when they have been given notice, especially if the company balks at paying them money for time not taken.

I've actually thought a lot about this. I think this is all Don's revenge on Michael Hughes. I think Don knew damn well Mike would crash and burn on the air but decided to hang this albatross around CBS's neck on the way out the door. In the interim, he's the big hero for trying to save peoples' jobs and they, in turn, torpedo the station...something Don would have loved to do himself if he had the chance.

OKAY: I take back, with apologies, "milking his wife's death." Seriously. I was wrong. Just don't try to lionize "Don." That bastard was in some ways worser than Mike.

But hey, peace out. Enjoy the few weeks of WJFK before they go sports (minus the Junkies, thank God.)

i agree. don knew TMOS would make all the people (like me) who hated him realize he was the reason TDAMS was good. if don decides to come back to a major market he will gets his balls shined by all the execs at cbs who couldn't program their way out of a wet paper bag. if don isn't consulting now, he will soon-and he'll make the junkies w-2 look like a joke.

200k is low for the junks, me thinks. especially with all their live spots.

I had always heard that JP was the anchor for the Junkies, that he "wrote" most of the material and that his job was to keep Cakes,Lurch,EB disciplined.

I'm disappointed that O'Meara is still on, nobody I talk to seems to like his show and I though I met him about a decade ago and had no real opinion, everyone I know who has spent any time with him thinks he's an a--hole.

Don was supposed to be working on a biography and his old radio tales were pretty funny when he'd talk about dope, bribery, sluts and the primadonna personality's in the business. Maybe Don will release his book and it will coincide with a return to radio in some fashion? I don't buy the retirement thing- Michael Jordan, Joe Gibbs, Mike Tyson, and almost every band that's done a farewell tour eventually come back.

That's called a producer. A good producer in this market should be getting $50K a year. Not what they are paying JP.

That buttresses the story that they have always been "all for one and one for all", meaning that they all agreed that the contracts would be equal for each of them. I guess, even if one of them would be paid less in a true market. Good for them, so far.

I don't know the economics of their show or the radio market in general, but they all do seem to be making a pretty good living, and there are four of them, so it may be tough to keep them all on, as in the past. They have had a great run, even if it ends tomorrow.

There's "all for one and one for all," and then there is riding on someone else's coattails.

If these guys are making more than $250K each, Michael Hughes should be fired. It is a stupid contract. They've done nothing in their careers to justify a paycheck like that. They can't draw an audience and they don't have professional chops. They sound like a bunch of former frat boys who have nothing interesting to say. The high point of the show is when they bring in their unpaid intern BDK because he is at least mildly amusing.

WTL you're spot on with your hate of the MOS, but I differ in that I do find the Junkies funny. It's not Howard Stern caliber professionally produced radio, but I think I appreciate them for their local references and the fact that I've ran into several of them over the past decade and they've all been consistently real and humble in person.

I can't say much for their pay rate, and I can't substantiate it but I thought they had better ratings 5 or 6 months ago, at least respectable. My unproven assesment is that the MOS is killing the rest of the station- D&M served as an anchor at WJFK as Stern did before that, and people were willing to give other timeslots a chance because they liked other shows that were on. Nowadays people are listening to anything but TMOS in drivetime and when at morning drive, their dial may remain where they left it last.

Talk radio is (to paraphrase Spinal Tap) "a fine line between stupid and clever". O'Meara hopefully will not be the man who kills it with his pisspoor show. If WJFK dissappears as a talk station, it's not going to be because the guy talk genre is dead, but because the afternoon drive talent is dead. If TMOS was not on, I am sure O & Dukes would rise to respectability and the Junks could maintain decent ratings, though $100k a piece would sound much reasonable in these times.

WJFK NEEDS TALENT! Bring back O & A, Ron & Fez, or try someone new here but proven in other markets. Don't let O'Meara blame the FCC for his inability to do a decent show, cut his fat ass loose and save the innocents who are on this
s(t)inking ship!

My issue with The Junkies is that they are not a morning drive-caliber show for a top market. Stick them on at night, that would be fine. Put them on on the weekends, okay. Have them be the morning show in Richmond, I get it.

But getting paid top dollar in a top market to generate little revenue makes no sense.

I agree that TMOS isn't very funny. Way less funny without Don, although towards the end of the D&M Show, his own demons were destroying the show anyway. It stopped being funny and just became angry. The TMOS is kind of the last limp to the finish line of trying to hold onto the old magic. As for the Junkies and Big O and D, they can be funny except when they start letting their egos fool them into thinking they are the DC equivalent of Stern celebrity (I notice this more especially with the Junkies). I like Big O and Dukes mainly because you can tell they are absolutely scared of getting fired and they are busting their asses because of that. A little panic makes for great radio. Case in point is Dukes blow up on the Dysfunctional Family Friday show. The Junkies sometimes punt the show and it's obvious. For the most part, their work ethic sucks. I think the Junkies should have no problem finding a new gig, unlike the other "talent" on WJFK, but I doubt that they will have as lucrative contract come negotiation time. I have to say to the Junks, they better get ready to work harder for less pay. $250K+ is alot of bones and in this new economy, earning it is going to require much more effort than in the past. The days of suits stroking big checks for minimal effort are over....the revenue just isn't there.

That's probably the most entertaining thing I have heard on WJFK in months.

I don't blame Oscar for blowing off the stupid show. He had a trip planned for months and the management pulls this shit at the last minute and expects him to eat the cost of changing his trip. When he talks about leaving early, everyone gives him shit about not being a "team player" so he just decides not to participate.

Good for him. You know the old saying, "A lack of planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on my part."

Fuck them all. At this point, doing a 13-hour stunt isn't going to save WJFK or the shows on it anyway.

Hilarious though how Mike was the one first to go nuclear at Oscar for leaving a couple hours early on a Friday, yet it's BO&D who returned promptly to work all this week while O'Meara begins his 23-day vacation.

And of course in his absence, they just re-run old shows, whole cloth, from 6 months ago. What surer way to get those PPMs up than Buzz reading about the New Hampshire primaries.

Your point is well taken, WTL - but the sick part? I do believe I heard these exact words from Robb Spewak's mouth that day, without a hint of irony.

If that's true, it speaks volumes about why they are failing.

You hit the nail on the head. The "Best Ofs" are even WORSE than the live show. It is time to fire Mike and the upper management that let this trainwreck go on for so long.

Didn't Mike get a 6-week break back in the Spring when Don had his meltdown? How the Hell does he get three more weeks?

Even fights on the MOM show are boring. The show is beyond saving. Just pull the plug. Terrestrial radio is dead anyway.

You're probably right about that one. Hell, D&M best-ofs would out-rate Live MOM shows.

January 23 is only a few short weeks away. Then what are we going to attack on here?
