It seems there has been an element of gradual ramping up or escalation for several years now.
He has, repeatedly, pressed right up against (if not crossed) the line of criminal behavior (gun photos to you fall into this category).
Although the shoplifting escapade did not result in a conviction, it is of record for LEO purposes, and he has used up the one pass Va. offers on that front (putting him in the danger zone to the extent such escapades have a compulsive aspect, as his curiously well-informed remarks on the art of shoplifting seem to suggest).
I don't see where he has any room for ramping up without his antics bringing him into a close encounter with the criminal justice system.
That said, a criminal conviction would likely terminate eesh's precarious hold on the straight life and nudge him into the career criminal path, where his natural aptitudes are likely to bring him levels of happiness, prosperity and freedom that he will never find in the straight world.
