The issue is less the moral actions of the individual who went outside her marriage, so much as it is the actions by her co-workers to shame her personal indiscretions on a forum that likely made the situation worse. This was her personal life, people have no business meddling in the personal affairs of others unless need is driven by the necessity to safeguard the welfare of a child or prevent harm to that person or another. This was about a group of people with very jacked up egos and views finding some dirt and having "fun" at the expense of another. If the situation were reversed they would feel just as violated. So it is really a golden rule situation. What is more, these are supposed to be highly trained first responding professionals. Their actions undermine public trust and overall confidence in their ability to do their jobs whole being good stewards to their communities. If the woman cheated she was wrong, but that doesn't excuse the actions of her peers. There is a documented history of abusive language towards women and minorities on this thread that shows the type of negative environment they create which can be summed up as nothing less than hostile. They need to be found, bright into the light, and punished for the sake of those who are good and doing their jobs and for the sake of restoring community trust.

Let me say that what you read here in the the beginning of this thread was posted by ignorant people. The majority of First Responders are NOT these people.

Yes, women are hit with double standards everywhere they go. Yes, women have it harder in what is traditionally a "Man's Job". And in a firehouse setting, this can SOMETIMES be complicated by the fact that there are overnight shifts, and bunkrooms, and well, idiots.

However, more and more woman have entered EMS and Fire Service, proven themselves, and thoughts have changed.

Please do not read this and think this is the norm.

I learned about the Firehouse MENTALity 15 years ago when, in my professional career, our subsidiary consisted of Loudoun and Montgomery County firefighters.

EVERYDAY YES EVERYDAY at lunch they needled and shamed each other, married or not, about their sexual exploits.

I've NEVER forgotten it and I've never gotten over the sheer nastiness of it all.

I could never speak out about it, because they are all considered heroes and 9/11 made that even more so.

As much as I wish that she hadn't killed herself, this has been happening in the fire service for a long time and needed to be exposed.

I was truly Blessed to be at Vollie at Station that had many strong women come before me, and had a HUGE mix of careers in thier Volunteer Staff. By the time I came, this was quickly becoming a thing of the past. But I did see it continue on the Paid side. And I saw it at a few other stations.

And I took a career path that led me into what is considered a "Man's Job". If you complain once, they say they will look into things. A 2nd time, you are a 'whiner'. So you have a job you love, a family to feed, bills to pay.... You suck it up, while inside you die a little every day.

My reason for THAT post was that what appeared to be a Citizen said they would never donate to a Fire Dept cause again, and that is a terrifying thought.
