Emmett, they are online here: https://www.loc.gov/collections/sanborn-maps/?st=gallery but due to ongoing copyright issues surrounding parts of the collection, many are still not online (such as all the Fairfax editions). But there is progress; for Falls Church there is a 1929 and 1946 edition online, and full sets of Alexandria from 1885 (!), 1907, 1921, and 1941.... looking at the changes bet

Sanborn fire insurance maps provide information on the construction materials of buildings of a particular time period and are great reference materials. Here's some from Falls Church, circa 1946.

"A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." If your "contribution" consists of divisive rhetoric and this absurd assertion that compassion for this girl brutal murder should be diminished because, well, "9-11", well I have no words. That blather isn't constructive. It's worse than doing nothing.

How many were killed by that crazy Jesus cult? The conquest of America, by Christians, from 1492 to 1691 killed 34 million people alone. Plenty of Muslim ideology-inspired killings Of course. The lines are often blurred as to how much religion is the cause of the killing. For instance, race, and poverty were the chief issues of the Chinese Dungan Revolt of the 1860s, not the Muslim religion.

ALL cars over 25 years old don't need emissions testing, whether they are antique tagged or not. I have some antique cars in parts or in the process of long-term restoration, so it would be a burden to pay yearly registration fees for something that is not on the road or rarely on the road. Thus the need for antique tags with permanent registrations. Inspection is done by the owner, one who k

Thanks. Front Royal, or maybe the Southern States on 11324 Tidewater Trail, Fredericksburg VA (540-373-3631). Nothing in Fairfax, apparently. The ethanol-free gas will work in the dual-fuel Coleman stoves in a pinch, without costing $15 per gallon, and it will be optimal for lawn mowers and such as well. I'll bring an empty container or two with me if I'm out in those parts anyway.

Looking for a station that sells low-odor, stable petroleum ether without additives for Coleman stoves that run on gasoline. Preferably without the anti-knock, octane-boosting additives. At the very least one that sells gas without ethanol, for use in lawn equipment.

Whatever. Some might say the dangerous intruder is already indside. The VP, the House speaker, and the Sect. of State can fill the Presidential office should something happen to the President. The White House didn't even have any fence at all in the 1800s. This isn't a banana republic. The executive mansion should not be a fortress. Let the Secret Service deal with it, but really, what hap

Slant top desks and secretaries were made in much the same style for two centuries. Sometimes it is difficult to pin down when it was made I have one, no bookcase on top, solid mahogany with a carved serpentine front, each drawer and top have individual locks with a skeleton key, has claw feet. Probably 1920s, but could be 1940s. I'd love to have an Art Deco one from the the 1900. On yours

You would need permission to take something off of park land, even it is, or seems to be abandoned. Put in a query to the parks department. Is it just the conduit, or the actual wire? Heavy gauge copper line of that length, in a heap and covered in overgrowth, is going to be a bear to pull out. It will be worth money. Old plastic conduit filled with mud and acorn husks and mouse skeletons is

Over the last 30 years I've ridden motorcycles to work every day and have an absolute blast. Much faster than driving a car. You don't get cut off on a bike. If a car swerves into your lane just bang the throttle and quickly move to the far side of your lane, and the cut-off car is no longer in front of you.

There does not seem to be any audio. How do we know that you weren't the one doing the threatening? The part at the end with the employees laughing off your tale is the best part. In the tank there is a standpipe called an overflow tube. Should the refill valve fail, water that falls into it goes into the bowl. As the tank refills, a small ancillary jet shoots water into this tube to refill the bowl. If you partially pinch off or redirect this water the bowl will only partially refill evert time the tank refills. Experiment!

The reports are here: https://www.fcwa.org/water/water.htm Remember that not all Fairfax water is treated at the same plant, to wit: "Fairfax Water draws raw water from two primary sources: the Potomac River and the Occoquan Reservoir, which is fed by the Occoquan River. The four facilities that treat your water feed an i
