Reviving this thread with a track from Jane's Addiction's groundbreaking album Nothing's Shocking. This album, at the time, changed my life. These guys were truly ahead of their time.

The fact that this record turns 20 years old next months scares me.

If it is okay for a book to change your life, why isn't it okay for an album to change your life? God forbid you should actually look at a different perspective on things and have it influence the way you think.

What should scare Alias is the fact he obviously has an extremely narrow world view and doesn't seem to be aware of that fact.

To clarify my comment: when Nothing's Shocking came out it made me realize that I should turn off the radio and MTV and start seeking out my own music. It was so different than anything else I had heard at the time. There was great music out there, but it wasn't in the mainstream and I didn't really know about it until then. During that period, some great albums were coming out, like the early Soundgarden records, Nirvana's "Bleach" album, Mudhoney's "Superfuzz Bigmuff", The Melvins, Sonic Youth, etc.

Alot of people credit Nirvana with breaking thru the mainstream barrier, introducing people to "alternative rock", and generating interest in music indie labels were releasing. And they do deserve that credit. But, in my case, credit was due 3 years earlier when Jane's Addiction hit the scene.

My Bloody Underground were like the kings of the UK shoegaze scene, thanks for posting that. It's not a genre I pull out too often but brings back great memories. Every so often The Black Cat will host a "Britpop" night where you can hang out and drink beers and listen to the DJ play this kind of stuff all nite, it's pretty cool.

I'll keep the theme going with one the other big shoegaze bands of the late 80's/early 90s...

I didn't see Janes on Lollapalooza. The show I saw was just Jane's Addiction and Lush playing at the arena at Rensselaer Polytechnic. It would have been spring 1991.

Speaking of shoegaze, does anyone remember the Golden Palominos album "A Dead Horse." It had a couple of good tunes on that. I see the album on iTunes, but I wanted to see if anyone posted any tracks online anywhere (and yes, I have "Googled" and "YouTubed" for them already).

But really, why are DJs revered? Its like applauding the IPOD shuffle for picking music out for me. It still takes someone to compose a song first.

The world's first radio disc jockey was Ray Newby of Stockton California. In 1909, at 16 years of age, Newby began regularly playing records on a small spark transmitter while a student at Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless located in San Jose, California, under the authority of radio pioneer, Charles "Doc" Herrold.[5][6]

We used popular records at that time, mainly caruso records because they were very good and loud; we needed a boost... we started on an experimental basis and then because this is novel, we stayed on schedule continually without leaving the air at any time from that time on except for a very short time during World War I when the government required us to remove the antenna... Most of our programming was records, I'll admit, but of course we gave out news as we could obtain it...[5]

It sounds like something Technoviking would like.

I agree, though. It seems to me like most DJs don't exactly have much of a skill set. When I think about the time and effort it takes for someone to learn how to play a piano or guitar well, and then look at this stuff, I really don't get what the big deal is.

You may know this song from the Mercury commercials. However I predict "Morningwood"...yes, that kind of wood, is going to break big in the next year or so...

Here is the Mercury ad. What is funny is that the singer is spelling out "MORNINGWOOD" over and over again on the commercial while with the gal with the big breasts talks about the car...

Speaking of great music, I was listening to Elliot in the Morning the other day and he was interviewing a curator of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A list of artists not inducted came up, including KISS, Genesis and Yes. I also knew that Heart hadn't been inducted yet. What surprised me is I looked through a list of other bands/acts, which included Cher, Alice Cooper and this great singer/songwriter...

Of course, who needs artists like this when Miles Davis, Bonnie Raitt and ZZ Top are inductees?

Whatever.

THE KINKS ROCK. Give the People what they want

I've been around the dial so many times,
But you're not there.
Somebody tells me that you've been taken off the air.
Well, you were my favorite D.J.,
Since I can't remember when.
You always played the best records,
You never followed any trend.
F.M., A.M. where are you?
You gotta be out there somewhere on the dial.
On the dial.

Where did you go Mr. D.J.?
Did they take you off the air?
Was it something that you said to the corporation guys upstairs?
It wasn't the pressure,
You never sounded down.
It couldn't be the ratings,
You had the best in town.
Somehow I'm gonna find ya, track you down.
Gonna keep on searchin',
Around and around and 'round and 'round...

I've been searchin' for you on my radio.
This time your station really must have gone underground
Somebody said you had a minor nervous breakdown.
Was it something that you heard,
Or something that you saw,
That made you lose your mind,
Did you lose control.
Did you step out of line?
If you're there, give us a sign.

I can't believe that you've been taken off the air.
Think I'll sell my radio now that you're not there.
You never gave in to fashion,
You never followed any trends,
All the record bums tried to hack you up,
But you were honest to the end.
Gonna keep my radio on,
'Till I know just what went wrong.
The answers out there somewhere on the dial.
On the dial.

Jesus, Alias. You should work for Muzak. You have got to have the most vanilla taste in music of anyone I have ever known. Nothing against Chris Isaak, but if you are going to listen to him, why not listen to something he's done that hasn't been played to death on the radio...

WashingToneLocian, You and Meeper should simply ignore me on this thread as I have ignored you. Don't listen to my music. I have never commented on the fucking shit music you have posted. So, why don’t you shut the fuck up regarding mine.

What losers you are.

(This is your life, isn't it?)

Coming from a guy whose song selections are in heavy rotation on Big 100.3 (I'll give you credit for Bob Marley).

That I

I would venture to guess that Meeper probably makes more than you.

Not compared to you, Alias. Not compared to you.

LMFAO

Yeah, nothing says "sophistication" more than that Everlast song you posted. I mean, what could possibly be more culturally refined than "Whitey Ford Sings the Blues"???

And that Rob Thomas/Santana song- I'm still shaking my head over that one. Seriously, it's almost like you posted it as some kind of joke.

But don't you get it??? Santana is old! And a Latino! There's nothing more sophisticated than that!

Ooops. I stand corrected. I'm surprised Alias hasn't already posted this.

TheMeeper-

I'm glad to see your taste is becoming more sophisticated. Here's something else that should appeal to Alias...

BUMP

It's been so long since they did anything interesting, and it's easy to write them off as a bunch of sell-outs that wanted to be Led Zeppelin... but damn if The White Stripes didn't crank out some great rock tunes... this came up on my iPod today and it makes me wanna go back and listen to their albums...

Artist: The White Stripes
Album: Elephant
Song: Black Math

Here's Stiff Little Fingers with "Suspect Device".
