Poor Crosby. I hate, HATE the Pens but his career has really been hampered by those concussions. 3rd line? Guy was the best in the NHL! It's sad.

Makes sense, they want him to play but on a limited basis.

Maybe its the best thing for him to do to have any sort of lengthy NHL career just a career journeyman.

Problem is most of goals were from cleaning trash up in front of the net, he doesn't rip'em from all over the ice the way Ovie does.

Caps need to win tonight. Letting Winnipeg within 2 points with road games against Chicago, Detroit, and Philly coming up would not be good for their chances. Is Green back tonight? I know he got a three game suspension, just can't remember how many games it's been.

I've always wanted to go to Winnipeg perhaps traveling to distant canadian cities will be a good excuse to do some traveling next season.

Anyways, I think Greene is still suspended. Not that it matters as i've said so many other times, i don't think his play brings much to table.

Why would you want to go there? I mean...other than to see the Caps on a road trip? There's not much to do there.

All of that can be had right here in the 703. The only one that requires any work would be the Canadian shorties. And you can find them right outside their embassy downtown just off the Mall...

Excellent call, m'Lord. Yeah...the only team that can make snarky-fail ads featuring a Stanley Cup holder? Les Habitants. It's generally advisable to...I dunno'...perhaps actually having WON a Cup before you would need a car capable of carrying one.

Hunter should start Holtby tonight. They aren’t going to beat the Redwings at home so why not? The Caps really need at least one point, which means they will not get one. My reverse psychology ju-ju isn’t going to work.

Something about throwing poutine at the building in an alcohol induced rage the day i learned that Canadians celebrate thier "Independence" on July 1st and the Canadian Thanksgiving celebrated 5 weeks before the REAL American Thanksgiving.

Well, the first Canadian Thanksgiving was in 1872 while the US had their first Thanksgiving in 1863.

Their Independance Day is July 1, 1867, while ours is July 4, 1776.

I'm aware but the calendar days on which they celebrate those holidays is slightly before ours. July 1st for independace and oct 8th for thanksgiving.

Btw, way to steal one on the road from Detroit. To bad hunter didn't put Ovie out in the last minute for a chance at a hat trick.

I reversed the ju-ju psychology on itself for good measure. This team is Jekyll and Hyde. I have the feeling that a Dale Hunter coached team could do pretty well in the playoffs. The problem lies in getting there.

The Caps caught Two really good teams in the middle of slumps. The Bruins were going through a slump and the Red Wings had a 5 game losing skid. That said, the wings Barely lose at home. They only had 4 losses at home ice. So beating them and holding off that late crash net hockey was impressive. Its also good that Ovi has come on and had two goals. Holtby looked solid till the wings pressed in the third. maybe its a good thing that Voukun is hurt.

So true, usually DC teams are doormats for good teams looking to regain momentum during a slump.

If the Pens surge and the caps hold onto the 8th seed its possible they will be matched up against each other in the first round....Sure would make for some great playoff hockey in DC!

Nice clip there Hay Zeus. For a Dale Hunter coached team, I thought the Caps would goon it up a bit more. I know it’s not the 80s but it seems like the Caps are one of the softest teams in the NHL.

Aside from Erskine, there isn't one player on this team who can throw down and intimidate. We saw it when Bourque elbowed Backstrom and gave him a concussion, nothing happened during the game. Then when they play again, Bourque proceeded to win the fight against Hendricks.

Does Dale honestly think anyone is scared going into a game knowing that they’ve got to drop the gloves with guys like Hendricks or Chimera? They need more toughness, especially on defense. For a team made up of 3/4 grinders, they seem pretty damn soft.

The win by Buffalo last night edges the Caps out of the 8th seed. They play the Wild tonight then Buffalo on Tuesday and I expect to see a playoff quality game.

BIG NEWS!!!

Backstrom is practicing with the team again and is expected to return before the end of the regular season!!!

Good win last night. The game tomorrow is huge. They've had a grip on that 8 seed for some time but recently it's kind of teeter-tottered with the road games. Understandable, but when you're up 3-0 and lose 4-3 because coach took his foot off the gas you need to make adjustments.

I was glad to see they did adjust last night. No taking the foot off the gas and sitting back. Just attack, attack, attack. That and Ovi had a ton of ice time. As well he should, he's the best player on the ice right now. That and the Wild suck on the road. It was nice to offically take them out of contention though.

I was also glad to see Holtby get the shutout. His rebound control is a little suspect but the guy looks good. If he gets hot I think you have to ride him into the playoffs. Which means the Caps will ride Vokoun.

I liked having Ovie on two lines, he's in the prime of his career and shouldn't have any problem keeping up. Especially since everyone on the team claimes he's a work out maching.

The resell market for caps tix are up a little for weeknight game for whats usually an unexciting matchup.

Not feeling very confident about tonight's game, despite Holtbys hot streak. Its not a "must win" but they do win tonight then they are still in control of their destiny. If they lose then they are at the mercy of other teams blowing it.

Holtby screwed up getting out of the crease to leave the net open and let Buffalo score 2-0 in the first. He's going to be good and I think he should start next year but I don't think he's the shutdown goalie the Caps need right now. Neither is Neuvi or Vokeswagon.

That said, Ryan Miller is beast in the net. The Caps got over 40 shots on the guy and only one goal.

Miller had a nice game. The Caps didn't shoot enough. They needed at least 4 more shots to get the game to overtime and at least 5 more to win in regulation.

Lol. What they needed was traffic in front of the net to block Miller's vision. He could see every shot/puck except the one that went in.

Yup. See my remarks above. I thought Knuble was going to be Captain Rebound but the Caps haven't had a guy earning his living in front of the net since Dino Ciccarelli was here touching little girls in the backs of limos in the early 90's.

Hendricks can daggle, no doubt about it but his short coming as a player are his skating abilities.

Buffalo's remianining schedule is:
Penguins
Maple Leafs
Maple Leafs
Flyers
Bruins

They've been riding a hot streak that hopefully culminated with the 5-1 victory over the Caps although they could easily go 3-2. So here we are as Caps fans rooting for the Penguins and Flyers, yet again.

I'm not so convinced, they play the higher quality teams much better and tighter then the crap teams.

Which makes me makes me think that poor play against bottom tier teams is more indicitive of coaching problems then roster problems.

Another good, not great win tonight. This is not the way a team that's going to still be playing in May closes out games and closes out the regular season. Although, they are mathematically in control once again of their destiny. Win out and they are cleared to be swept by the NYR.

Obviously, it was great to have the 19 car back on the race track tonight. He is truly the Commander on the man-advantage. However, at the same time, I thought too many people were standing around watching Backstrom work.

The Caps are 1-2 vs the Rangers this season and play them for the season finale.

Nov 25 3-6 Loss
Dec 26 4-1 Win
Feb 12 2-3 Loss
Apr 7 TBD ???

Each team has a win with 3 goal margin, the most recent game was tightly played. That's not exactly complete domination over the Caps.

The #1 seed is not destined to win the Cup, remember all the years the Caps were a #1 seed?

Now am I saying they're definitely going to win the Cup? No but there is no reason to be negative nelly either.

Not a fan of the shoot out, it went down to the wire but was exciting none the less. Had a great time at the game.

What's up with letting off the gas every time the team has a lead? Turtle shell defense was engaged as soon as they were up 2-0. Ugh.

Caps win tomorrow and Sabres lose and the Capitals make the playoffs no matter what happens the last two games. Go Leafs!

I enjoy the shootout, its better then the alternative of ending the game with a tie. Although, i wouldn't mind if they made the 4-4 OT 10min instead of 5. I like watching 4 on 4 hockey in the sudden death format. Lots of open ice, fast skating, a brief break from traditional North American Hockey.

Truth. But you cannot look at the 2011-2012 Caps and tell me as an 8th seed and the way they are playing RIGHT NOW that they will beat the NYR or go on to win the Cup. It's fine to HOPE for that and ROOT for that but it's illogical to do so. That's why the games are not played on paper they're played inside my television.

I enjoy the uncertainty of the NHL and that an 8 can and has won a Cup, but this is not the team that's going to do it.

After Ottawa punched its ticket to the postseason with a 5-1 win over the Islanders on Sunday, there are two playoff spots still up for grabs in the East. Here are the remaining schedules of the teams still vying for those spots:

Washington, 88 points, 36 regulation and overtime wins : Monday at Tampa Bay; Thursday vs. Florida; Saturday at N.Y. Rangers

Florida, 91 points, 31 ROW : Tuesday vs. Winnipeg; Thursday at Washington; Saturday vs. Carolina.

Buffalo, 86 points, 31 ROW : Tuesday vs Toronto; Thursday at Philadelphia; Saturday at Boston.

Over the past few seasons, the Caps have gone into the playoffs as the prohibitive favorite to go to the Finals. Every year, they have choked in a critical game.

This year, if they make it, there are NO expectations that they will advance in the playoffs. Maybe this will cause them to play loser, take more chances and not do the half-assed slapshots from halfway across the ice they are known for it tough games. Maybe this year, they manage to do something.

Doubt it, but you never know.

Backstrom is back but far from game shape. If he can get back into game shape with these games and contribute they have a better chance. I like that Nuevrtt and Holtby are the Gaoltenders now. I think that gives Caps fans a better chance down the stretch. Those guys are fresh faces and the opposition doesnt know their tendencies as well as they do Voukun. That said the caps keep playing down to the wire. Panthers took detroit down to the shoot out. Caps got down to several shoot outs. ottawa just keeps winning. Sabres have to bounce back at some point. its whoever is hungriest will take the southeast and earn a bid into the last playoff spot for that division. Come on Caps. Dont flame out and suck like always.

I don't think the Caps will win the SE division unless the Panthers take a key player injury that scrambles their line combos. I think they have a decent shot at making the playoffs but history has shown that when the Caps' destiny is in their own hands they fold. I'm hoping they find a way to pull through, make the playoffs and ride the momentum past NY, but that is kind of far fetched... Regardless of the negative long-view I really hope they smoke TB tonight.

I was stunned to figure the calculus before tonight's game...The Capitals are 3 games from the end of the season and they could STILL:

1) Win the division and have home-ice advantage
2) Qualify for the eighth seed
3) Miss the playoffs entirely

I still think it's number 3 this year but in 37 years, I can't remember this team ever having all 3 options available this late in the season...

I think the Caps lost that game when Mike "Boner" Greene buried that open net shot into Rolosons glove. It gave Roloson all the confidence in the world to shut down the Caps offense.

If Greene was more discipline and picked the corner and they go up 2-0.

Uh huh...look who we're talking about here. The man never met an up-ice rush he didn't like. He's gone from being up in the rush too much as a rookie, then picking and choosing his moments better based on the current score and time left in the game and now he's back to being the fourth forward. I understand he's not Joe Reekie but at some point you have to play defense. Everyone plays defense...

Agreed. After a while it seemed like the Caps were aiming for his glove. Had Roloson just taken off his glove and put it in the referee's crease at center ice, the Caps wouldn't have had another shot on goal because they'd keep trying to put the puck into the timekeeper's bench!

That shot goes in 90% of the time, it was an awesome save. Give Roloson some credit, he played really well.

Rolloson and the Bolts have had the Caps number all year. Why was this loss to that 42 year old that big a shocker? it should not have been. Mikey greeny jumping into offensive zones has been a strength in the past to jumpstart. Freaking Wideman does it all the time. takes a shot from the blue you say? WHY NOT! he responds and Does. Did you watch last year's playoffs? I mean, I know it was over quickly but, we gave Rolo PLENTY of credit last year. In my beer league, that's a forgiveable miss or a great save depending on what team you're on. In the NHL and you're Mike Green...uh yeah, that's an UNFORGIVEABLE miss. Fortunately, there are still lots of opportunities to bail him out over the next few days but, they had a chance to have home-ice and they blew it. I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was.

Green hasn't been the same player since he's been back. If it was just one guy, you say he's having a down year but it's almost the whole team. I think at this point it's fair to say that it's coaching. :(

As someone who played goaltender at a high level and coached youths, I give Roloson credit for the hustle of getting over the other side of the net to get himself in position to make that save but Mike "Boner" Greene shot the puck right into the glove. To me its very obvious that Rolosons glove hand is extended out the only way his body mechanics would dictate. Perhaps he would get more style points if he finished with a nice windmill motion....

Anyways if Greene didn't take the opportunity for granted and picked the corner or roof of the net the way Ovie or Semin do then they go up 2-0 and probably win the game. I think he knew it judging by his reaction after. Its the NHL and nothing is given.

Agree to disagree. It was a nice save IMHO.

Buffalo just got the win. Bastards. It wouldn't shock me if the Caps lost the last two. Buffalo finishes against Boston and Philly, the Bruins may rest players and the Flyers will be looking ahead to the Pittsburgh game. Not looking good.

It's true. I think I’ve said it myself five times or more in this thread. This game should be a formality but the Caps have missed so many chances to wrap it up.
I have no doubt the town would go crazy for a team that won a cup but it’s DC, not Toronto. Still, the Caps have a lot of support.

No offense to Caps Jihadist but i'm glad your not the coach otherwise the season would have been over in early March.

I think its more advantageous for the Caps to stay at the 8th seed rather then bump florida out of the 3 seed and play the red hot, 5 win streak, devils.

This team also plays better as underdogs winning games they shouldn't and losing games they should win. As an 8th seed you're generally expected to lose.

I hope the Caps end up in the 7th seed if they can't/don't win the division... Caps have played much better this season vs Boston compared to the Rangers.

Interesting that the last 4 playoff visits the Capitals have had 4 different starting goaltenders. Looks like we're going to keep that trend. Maybe Holtby can pull a Cam Ward impression. I won't be holding my breath.

Not sure if i wouldn't mind seeing the caps get blown out and go into the playoffs with a chip off the shoulder. They only know how to be over confident and fall flat their faces as opposed to just being confident...

So you know where I come from, I have a picture of the 1980 USA Hockey Team celebrating their win over the Soviet Union and Bobby Orr's famous "Flying Goal" in my man cave to remind me that anything is possible.

Have you considered that this is the complete capitals team with Boner, Ovie and Backstrom that we've been waiting for all season entering into the playoffs?

Also Holtby looked solid all night if he plays that well in the first round....anything can happen.

I was 8 when we won the gold against Finland at Lake Placid. I was at BRYC basketball practice when we were playing the Soviets. (Everyone forgets the game against Russia was NOT for the gold...) One of the Dads was listening to the game on this thing called an "AM Radio". We stopped practice and listened to the Miracle. A week later I took my first skating lesson at Fairfax Ice Arena. A year later, I started playing in their house league. Earlier THIS year, I competed in a pond hockey tournament in Wisconsin at age 40. Finally, some say Bobby Orr was the greatest hockey player ever.

You're right, Hay-Zeus...juxtaposing the fortunes of the 2011-2012 Washington Capitals against 1980 Team USA and the career of Bobby Orr ANYTHING is possible.

I guess when you've been "waiting for the Great Pumpkin" for as long as I have, you begin to doubt "he's" ever coming at all. Go Caps!

10 out of 10 "experts" like the Bruins over the Caps.

http://espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs/2012/story/_/id/7772345/experts-picks

I like being the underdog but let's face it, the Caps have issues at goalie, Tim Thomas was a beast in the playoffs last season, and Washington has been pretty inconsistent.

On the other hand, when Green, Backstrom, and Ovie have been on the ice at the same time Caps are like 12-1.

More Complete Wrote:

Hey, look at that, got my wish! Careful what you wish for! The Caps matched up well against Boston this year but the regular season doesn't matter much when it comes to playoff hockey. Remember when the Caps beat the Pens in 08-09 regular season, and then the Pens won the cup that year, beating the Caps on their way? I do! That said, I think Boston and the Rangers are both over rated.

My concern with the Caps is really who's in net. Holtby looked good the other night but the guy is only 22. Neuvy looked great until he got hurt and TVo has been out for some time. I know guys play with injuries all the time, but I worry that they will come back before they are ready just to play, and hurt the team in the process.

Caps need a goalie who can steal a game or two for them and I’m not sure I see that guy on the roster.

F the experts, this is the scenario i have been waiting for the Caps to be in, limping into the playoff and being the underdog. Being an underdog allows a team to open up its play and not be so tight. With less pressure on the Caps these guys are in a better place mentally as #7 seed versus #1 seed.

The only thing experts are good for is post game analysis.

I like to think that the scenario is ripe for Holtby to go on a hot streak.

After a terrible game against BUffalo and getting shit canned he has a opportunity to redeem himself and take his team to the promised land.

Sure he's 22 but unlike Varlomov he has more NHL game time experience and has played in some tough games during the last few weeks of the season.

I'm also liking the Pens vs Flyers Cross state rivalry match up. Two very good teams that are both equally my least favorite match up against the Caps and one will be OUT after the first round.

This 2012 matchup between PIT and PHI has the potential to go down as one of the best series since those DET/COL games of the mid-to-late 90's. Remember when Claude Lemieux threw that cheap shot on Kris Draper and Dino Ciccarelli famously said, "I can't believe I shook that guy's freakin' HAND!"

The 'Guins and the 'Yers do NOT like each other and there will be lots of hits, lots of punches, lots of random skullduggery, lots of defense and goalie-ing and little scoring. I like the 'Burghers in 7.
