Just a little more then 5min into the game and they're down 0-2. I really don't think coaching or strategy is the problem, no what I see is bunch of guys who aren't having fun playing anymore, they're burned out on each other.

Unfortunately I don't think hunter is the coach to get them to loosen up. Hunter needs a new team or the team needs a coach who can lighten up the mood.

Too early to predict 2nd place in the division, playoff berth, first round win, second round elimination and most of the team gets blown up in the offseason?

Is this what you think will happen, or what you want to happen? Both?

Just my opinion but GMGM is not selling, he's going to buy. His job is on the line and he means to keep it with a playoff appearance. What they should do and what they will do are two different things.

To quote Leonsis, “worst game of the season” just terrible. They had a chance to take second place against the bottom dwellers of their division and looked like they could care less.

Hey Zeus is right, they aren't playing together as a team. The only thing that gives them a chance is how bad the SE division is. It’s a slim chance, but it’s still a chance. Was it over when the Germans bombed pearl harbor?

Who did you piss off WTL? Lol.

They're going to be Buyers at the trade deadline. Call me bold but either they need to find some guys who are naturals to play Hunters system or replace Hunter.

Greens's been back for two game. All the analyst kept saying "Hunters been playing without Green, once Green is back in the line up they'll be a better team" yeah yeah, they're doing worse with Greene thus far.

Any predictions on tonights game?

I want to believe there is some fire in the belly of this team to prove they're not emotionally dead.....but thats not pattern of behavior they have demonstrated in the past.

My guess is they play catch up the whole game, keeping it close but never seizing momentum.

It could be anyone. I've kind of been on a tear, lately. But given the vitriol and the low level of intelligence, I would imagine these are coming out of Richmond.

I'm actually looking forward to this one. I want to see how the team reacts in response to the blowout on Monday. It will set the tone for the remainder of the season. Not sure how they turn things around with Ovi and Laich (game time decisions) both being hurt so I’m expecting the worst (which means they will win 5-1).

Other news is that Hamrlik is being shopped so he’s going to be a healthy scratch.

Hamrlik never should have been on the team. I think Locker said he has the most penalty minutes.

I'd almost feel more optimistic about the game knowing Ovie is out.

I didn’t mind the move but many criticized it at the time. Ovi is out. Top line slated to be Hendricks - Perreault - Semin. That makes me very nervous. Hope it’s not another laugher.

Greene was on the ice for 4 out of the 5 goals. He IS NOT in game shape. Hell he may not be in game shape till the end of the season. I heard a stat that teams that score the first goal win 70% of games. They need to score early and OFTEN to win this one. Ottowa is what 7th in the east? Hopefully they dont play DOWN to the level of the comp (like Carolina) and play UP to the Sens level. They need to recapture some of that Offensive style, all out, crash net UNLEASH THE FURY caps system of the past several years. Enough of this wishy washy smidgeon of offense/OOPS get back quick on D. FUCK ALL THAT! SCORE BABY SCORE!

They never should have fired Boudreau. That was a dumb ass move. Bench Ovi. Bench Semin. Firing Boudreau was the wrong move. He could have turned the squad around with more discipline. Hunter cant do it. His system doesnt work with the people they have. The all out offensive juggernaut known as the caps from the past several seasons depends on the players they have on the roster. Not this crappy half and half defense/offense. They have a roster for SCORING! NOT WISHY WASHY CRAP. CRY HAVOC AND RELEASE THE HOUNDS of SCORE!!!!!

Boudreau started losing the team after the playoff loss to The Habs a couple of years ago. Last year's post-season collapse was the final nail.

Regarding Hunter, you know my take on that. The guy is happier with his pet project in Canada. He won't be here next season.

Boudreau's teams level of Talent? Crap-tacular!

Hunter's teams level of Talent? Supposedly AWESOME!

Doesnt mask the fact Boudreau's got more out of a craptacular team than hunter got out of an allegedly super talented team.

The Caps should call up Rechlitz and DJ King, tell the two of them plus Hendricks to go after Bourque all night tonight. If I'm on the caps, I'm waiting for him outside the visitor's locker room after the game too. One of the cheapest hits I've seen. Backstrom still has blurred vision.

Apparently there is a lot of interest in Knuble, I imagine the Caps are trying to keep him healthy. Should be good game for Green back at home for the first time in forever. No telling how Ovi is but I doubt he's 100%. What's been lost in the whole fiasco is how well Semin has been playing under Hunter. His penalties are way down and he's playing like he actually gives a crap.

They need to be up 5-0 before doing that.

Knuble has been great as a Cap but I think its time for him to go. He's 39, goal production is non existent and his +- is terrible. If he is a "locker room guy " it's not very evident.

Yes, very quiet. Seems like this time last year more was going on, not just with the Caps but league wide. I figured Hamrlik or Knuble would have been shipped out by now. Maybe lots of moves will be made right AT the deadline. I can't see GMGM just staying put.

I can't say I'm really all that surprised. I can't imagine what changes the Caps could have made to make themselves a true contender this year, or what changes the Caps could have made without waving the "we give up" flag.

The truth is that there wasn't a whole lot the team could do. Who knows what McPhee's status is now. After trumpeting for a coaching change and not seeing results, I'm not so sure firing McPhee now will have any results either. It's not like there's another double-secret trade deadline coming up that he can screw up. Stand pat for the rest of the year and fire him in the off-season. Otherwise management is just sending the players a message saying "We have absolutely no faith in you guys and this fool didn't do anything to make you better!" Even if that's the overall impression, you have to keep wearing a happy face when you're only one point out of the playoffs!

Good assessment, “oh well.” I just could have sworn they would add depth at center with Backstrom out.

Including tonight, 20 games remain. 11 of them are at home. Probably the two toughest home games will be the two after tonight against the Devils and the Flyers.

Other than that all the other home games are either with Divisional teams or teams below in standings/points.

Remaining road games are an entirely different story. Winning home games will be a must for this team in order to make the playoffs.

Nah. I’m American, I played football. ;-) Wish I had but I didn’t even start paying attention to hockey until I was a teenager. Had a few buddies who played. Have to credit one of my Canadian friends for turning me into a fan.

People who left at the start of the 3rd thought the same thing. They missed out. 70% of the time, you would be right though.

Agree. For most of the game they were outshooting the Islanders but not many of the shots were any good. The two they got to tie it up were with guys standing in front of the net. Go figure!

Exciting game. Glad I stayed tuned for the last 5 minutes.

Does anyone need anymore convincing? Well, if you do...I saw a Titleist rep fitting some Caps players for new clubs...

23 shots and no goals. That sounds about right...I know when I've had 23 shots, I often don't have any goals either.

Well, at least the Caps scored twice tonight... then they left to go party or something. Canes are up 3 to 2 now with little hope of the team actually turning it around...

At the start of the season I was ready to see the Caps make it into the playoffs, but not be so high up; I wanted to see them really earn it. With the way they've played this year, it's obvious they want it given to them or don't want it at all. Wow, how ridiculous...

For some reason i decided to turn game on with about 5 min left in the 3rd. Fortunately that was all that was worth watching.

1) Got to see Marcus tie it up with a sweet 5 hole shot
2) Watch Vokoun wander around behind the net, get tripped up and almost blow it with 90 seconds left
3) See Ovie put it away as he should

With a Panthers loss last night the Cap are 2 points out of first place.

Maybe its the caffeine talking but i think there is still hope of a playoff berth.

motherfucking vokoun... the only reason he didn't blow the game last night is because the caps kept the bolts in their defensive zone for the majority of the 3rd period and OT.

He is basically to the Caps what Rex Grossman is to the skins. He shows flashes of greatness in one play only to be followed by complete ineptness the next.

Resulting in a palm face to my forehead.

So true...Rex will call time outs back-to-back, throw to wide open defenders with no receiver in sight, fumble snaps, then throw a 60 yard bomb down the sideline. Unfortunately I could do all those things too. If the caps want a large object in front of their net flopping around and giving the other team multiple open net shots they should just put a live game fish on the ice with a 29 sticker on it.

Mike Green Suspended three games. just when we need all hands on deck and all pistons firing this happens. BIG ROAD trip coming. Tomorrow's game against the Bruins at 1 is a crucial game and he goes and gets tossed for 3? WOOF. I dont like their chances here. The Panthers lost a shoot out to Penguins so thats one point making them three points ahead of Caps for first place in the south-least division. Chances are the Jets lose to Flames tonight. That would be ideal if they stay down a game from the caps. This is just NOT LOOKING GOOD. Oh and I watched that game against the Bolts. Vokoun was the only thing keeping them IN THE DAMN game at times. That stop on the wrap around then stopped again on the wrap from the other side seconds later? DAAAAAAAAMN. DUDE CAN PLAY!

Epic Win last night!

If they win again today and the Panthers lose to the Hurricans they're back on top of the division by 1 point.

As exciting as that seems however, recent history proves they often lay and egg after a big win so....here we are.

For the all the talk about Mike Green being so great D, I really don't see a difference in play with or without him. They should shit can him after the season.

Whatever i'll take all the extra hockey i can get to stay off the doldrums of summer sports.

How many times have the Caps as the #1 seed get bounced in the first round?

You should know as well as anyone else that unlike the other major national sports league ANYTHING can happen in the NHL playoffs which is why hockey is much more interesting.

The Caps have shown the will to turn it around and if they keep it up, the playoffs will be waiting. Seems to me it started in that 3rd period against the Lightning and they haven't let up since. Apparently, Dale Hunter started yelling at them. Probably something he should have done from the start. The PP has looked night and day the past two games.

That said, Green's suspension is deserved, it was an illegal hit. The last 5/11 games they have won have been against bad teams, with the exception of Boston. They have to keep the pedal to the floor.

I was holding out hope but I’m starting to think Backstrom will not be back at all this season, even if they make the playoffs.:(

They should've traded Greene before the deadline, I don't see what he brings to the table.

He's hurt a lot and now suspended, the few games he was playing in between that, the team did not look decisively better as the analyst would want us to believe.

Backstrom cant play even if healthy. he was placed on IR and is uneligable till the playoffs start. But who knows. Last I read he was in Sweden seeing a specialists about concussions and migraines. Boston was in a mini slump at home so the Caps caught a good team at a bad time (for Boston) Also the Islanders have OWNED the Caps this year for whatever reason. Although they are on a hot streak lately the hot streaks last three games then go south again. Im hoping it continues but who knows. Hell even Semin has been chipping in lately with Goals and assists. He is making up for Ovi disapearing again.

No, I hear you Zeusy...and again, no one would cheer more loudly and proudly than me if they did the Cup from the 8th seed. And yet, while the Caps have been bounced repeatedly as the #1 seed they are not known for being #1 seed killers.

GMGM pointed out the other day that with the team they dressed in game 1, that roster is 8-0. As we know, getting THAT roster on the ice more has been a problem.

I hope they do it. I do. I really do. But, this team has shown repeatedly in the Ovechkin-era and beyond that when they need to turn up the wick, they can't do it. Perhaps since Dale Hunter lived through his share of that he can find a way or the words to get these men to move their feet, shoot the puck on net, stuff in rebounds, avoid stupid penalties and bring a big bag of knuckles to the front of their own net. And I certainly think the odds are against them doing it after the regular season they've had. They will have the advantage of no national pressure as an 8th seed.

As for summer sports...I like Formula1, the PGA and this year we'll have the London Olympics. Hay Zeus, I'm expecting daily analysis from you on the Modern Pentathlon, Team Pursuit results from the velodrome and cleavage quotient from Bikini Volleyball matches.

He is made of glass, that’s true but when he’s 100% he brings a lot to the team. Just look at his TOI numbers and you get an idea of what the coaches think of him. He’s been rusty since he’s been back but one thing he does really well is make a good first pass to start the offense and clear their zone, this should not be underestimated. It will be nice if they make the playoffs and he hits his stride, unlike years past where he becomes invisible.

I have lost all hope of Niki playing this season (when/if they make the playoffs). I’ve been singing Semin’s praises for a while now, he has really improved under Hunter. His penalties are way down and he’s actually contributing instead of making bone headed mistakes. You’re right, it makes up for Ovi falling down to earth. Speaking of falling down, is it just me or does Ovi fall down like 5 times a game? It’s like he’s wearing someone else’s skates.

I agree about the Islanders and fully expect a Caps loss tonight. *reverse psychology ju-ju*

@ Morecomplete....your're reverse ju-ju or whatever the hell you call it, worked!

I don't believe it, they rally back from down 3 goals on the road to win in a shootout. A point is a point, though two would have been nice.

have to give Ovie credit, if he doesn't score in the last minute of the second period, that game is over.

After I saw Hunter put Hendricks out in the 4th shootout round, i knew it was over.

Yeah but, Zeusy...I see this and I have the complete opposite reaction.

Why is the team taking the 27th best team in the league to overtime in order to squeeze out a point? When you play the 27th best team in the league...um yeah...you get 2 points from that game. I don't care if it's on the road or not.

Now Thursday they roll into Detroit....Detroit is the 4th best team in the league and they are the best team in the league at home having lost a whopping 4 games there. 1 point against Detroit would be acceptable.

Its significant because i remember seeing stat during one of the games that the team who scores the first goal wins 80% of games.

Mental lapses happen to every team and I think the Caps are overrated anyways because their division sucks. They are the Seattle Seahawks of 2005-2007. Looking really good playing against crap teams in their division all season long.

If they were truly a rudderless team with no direction that game is over by end of the 2nd period. However they found a way to come back and the islanders owned the caps during the season. Sometimes teams just match up in weird ways.

One step at a time.

I rather see them going into detroit after a tough game hungry for a win then coming off an easy win.

Agree. The final 8 minutes were a good sign. Do you want to win the division? Prove it. Beat a worthless team in next 8 minutes.

Capitals’ Nicklas Backstrom skates, says he’s ‘improving a lot’ (updated)
By Tarik El-Bashir

Update, 1:20 p.m.: Backstrom spoke with the Capitals’ Mike Vogel after he skated.

“I’m improving a lot and I don’t have the same feeling I had when I first got the hit,” Backstrom said, adding that the improvement of his concussion symptoms feels like “day and night.”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capitals-insider/post/capitals-nicklas-backstrom-skates/2012/03/14/gIQAnBOxBS_blog.html

Still not allowed to play before playoffs. Caps best player OUT till then.
