I wish a nigga would... I'm not afraid of some crusty-ass, drunk-ass, old-ass, skinny-ass, stankin'-ass black dude...

Every once in a while, I like to invite some excitement into my all too repetitive life...

Alias might refer to it as having a "wild hair (hare?) up my bum"...

why can't the CEO of a big, huge corporation be close friends with the janitor who works in his office? Why do we live in a society where this is forbidden? It's not right.

Harryo, I salute you for breaking down the barriers of social class in our stratified society. It's a great thing you did today. We should all eat a baconator with a drunk homeless black man.

You can... you just have to say "fuck it" every once in a while...

I was going to start a thread that challenged FU Users to do out-of-the-ordinary tasks...

Each week (day? whatever.. unit of time) a new WHACKY challenge is issued and the residents of the thread must report back with their stories on their attempts....

As long as you attempt the challenge, you succeed... We could do WILDn'out type things like eat with a homeless dude, or try to get a hot date with someone of the same sex...

Or just scream obscenities in a gas station...

Y'know... spice up life and e'rythang..

Why not unveil my idea in FU:AD?

I think that's a great idea. I want to go start a conversation with the mexican landscapers outside my apartment. I want to become close personal friends with the young mexican boy mowing the grass median outside my apartment. This could be a wonderful world.

it's not forbidden as in 'against the law', no. But it is a social taboo. We all belong to a particular social class in a stratified society such as America. All members of a social class enjoy equal or similiar priveledges and access to social rewards and mobility in a society, but members of differing social classes rarely interact in any way other than impersonal 'business' relations....a high-powered executive can say 'hey, how bout those Redskins' to the janitor in his office, but that's about it. He can't, or won't, generally go beyond a simple workplace-related interaction like that. And the further apart the social class, the less likely they are to mix in any manner other than conducting business (ex; a CEO picking up his dry cleaning and saying 'have a nice day' to the Korean woman behind the counter). This is what it means to live in a stratified society. We of course are free, in a sense, to associate with whomever we wish, whenever we wish, and in whatever context, but the social rules of thumb relating to each social class have certain prescriptions for interaction with people of other classes that, also, in a sense, cannot be broken.

I think your class "rule" is more of a tendency than a rule...

In some circles, it may be taboo... (like FOBs and gangs) but I think you'll find, for the most part, people are pretty accepting... get out there and see for yourself!

you're right, Harry, it is a tendency. But when almost everyone, or at least, the majority of a group, share a tendency towards one thing or another, doesn't that tendency in a way become a sort of social 'rule'? Yes, there will always be exceptions, but the rule remains a rule as long as it is agreed upon by the majority, and especially if sanctions are placed on those who break or bend it.

I know Indians are like that about their children associating with black people... I know some parents are like that about their children associating with druggies...

edit to add: some oldschool Mexican families are like that about white people...

I just haven't experienced the "taboo" effect that you are describing with the majority of people I've met...

I think it's kind of a trite stereotype.. It's some Bend it Like Beckham shit...

That mostly happens in the movies, bra...

also giver her your cell phone number and tell her she can call you anytime she's feeling down and lonely, like no one in the world cares. Ideally, you will become close personal friends with this decrepit old woman. You will learn to love each other. It will be beautiful. Like a painting.

think about that poor old woman, harry. Think of her sitting alone, friendless, childless, abandoned in some rundown assisted living facility. This is your chance to MAKE A DIFFERENCE. You can do it. We all should do it. I'm 100 PERCENT SERIOUS right now.

no, you have to first experience what this poor woman experiences everyday. You have to understand her, not just check a completed task off a list. It's not about that. It's about understanding, compassion, and changing lives.

and let's try not to turn it into an exact copy of Pay it Forward...

Dude, I'm committed... but I am trying to be practical about this... I want to get the ball rolling, get some momentum... the first mission should just be slightly uncomfortable... like talking to some Mexican strangers for 5 minutes...

I'm going to have to ride the bus every single day until I find some old lady... but not just ANY old lady... an old lady that lives in Assisted Living... Cut me some slack... I'm not going to be able to accomplish this in a week..

You don't have to speak Spanish... use body language... I've done it before.. You'll be surprised the conversations you can have with somebody that doesn't speak your language...

and you have to have a 5 minute exchange...

You'll get your chance to make sweet love to an elderly woman... Your challenge has been issued... THis is just the first of many challenges...

I have bad news, everybody. I know Mr. Misery in real life (that's IRL), and, early this morning, around 5:30am, he chose to end his own life. He tied a ligature to a doorknob, sat down, leaned forward, and passed out. He passed out after 45 seconds of direct pressure to the jugular veins and his heart stopped about five minutes later. He's dead. I hope you are happy, eesh, MrMephisto. You both got your wish.

Some to misery are born.
Every morn and every night
Some are born to sweet delight.
Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night.
