SoCo just scored again, the DB for Madison who's covering #10 is at least 10 yards off of him at the line of scrimmage. Guess who just caught the TD pass for SoCo? If the DC for Madison doesn't come up with something else this game is over.

Not impressed with Madison's D, they look like it's been a long season based on how exhausted they seem to be. On offense Madison needs to do something other than just hand the ball off, that's not working.

I said the same thing on the first SoCo drive, WHY are they playing 10 yards off the SoCo receivers? Dumb strategy.

Soco 14-0 at halftime. Madison gets the ball. They better make adjustments.

14-9, SoCo - Madison, just got interesting but with 4 minutes to go, might not be enough time. Madison doesn't seem to know how to stop SoCo, the Stallions keep making mistakes. On the offensive side, Madison just doesn't seem to have an explosive offense, so if they get down by more than 1 score they'll be done.

SoCO with the bomb for a TD, think this game is over. As said before, Madison takes too long to move the ball down the field. They also have no answers for SoCo's passing game.

I could not tell on the video. Was the DPI that obvious? You can’t throw that flag in that situation unless the WR was mugged. What a tough call to make. Feel bad for Madison.

Agreed. It seemed every key play had a big penalty. The refs ruined what was a very entertaining game.

NOVA officals ruin a lot of games. I haven't seen a game in 5 years where there weren't multiple personal foul penalties, late pass interference calls, and numerous players sent off the field for uniform infractions. Those guys like to show everyone how well they know the rules instead of letting the kids play. They need to put less of them on the field so they don't make as many calls.

That was a complete total bullshit call on that fourth down. You can't call pass interference on a play like that. Obviously the ball was tipped. Unbelievable.

There are calls like that in every game. Last week Chantilly got a personal foul flag and a joke of a call that extended Madison’s drive and gave them the game. Braddock had ridiculous calls go against them in the South County game and the Robinson game. There just are not enough officials to go around. Instead of complaining about nonsense, go make the game better and become an official.

The unsportsmanlike for taunting against Chantilly could have been the game, we don’t know. That flag changed everything in those last few minutes. Every flag impacts a game. Madison is a tough and talkative team. They flex and point all game (which is fine). The kid from Chantilly gave the incomplete signal and he gets a taunting penalty? It goes both way. That’s football.

I watched the South County vs Madison game last night. I might have to agree with the whiners about the officiating. There was a clear message from them. Leave Spalding alone or we'll through a flag! Off sides calls on multiple 3rd & short for Madison?? But Football is about overcoming your obstacles. Madison just didn't do that. I couldn't see that controversial DPI at the end of the game. But it wouldn't surprise me that the refs got too involved again.

For Madison's game plan, they seemed to take what South County was giving them for most of the game. I think their biggest failure was not blitzing more. When they did, good things happened & their DB's seemed to be good enough to handle it. Miska won't be so comfortable next Saturday!

Spalding likely has been trained by whoever had trained Westfield's top receivers. That Second TD in the corner of the endzone is a classic move I've seen from those teams. Push off just as they make contact, knowing the refs won't call OPI! Smith players know this move now. They can keep space and freely go after the ball. The Madison DB got schooled but recovered the best he could.

Bottom line, I smell a beat down coming. Remember Osborn vs Smith @ VaTech? We will be better than Madison at the run game & as soon as they make adjustments, the bombs will be falling on them! Massaponax gained only 87 yards yesterday in THEIR option game. Their coach admitted they just couldn't make their reads vs our D!!

How will South County do better??? I am expecting a lot of risk-taking. Onside kicks, trick plays & blitzes. Let's see how that goes.

who cares. This season isn't even a real season. Whoever wins won't be a real state champion. When you only play half the games as normal and half the number of playoff teams, and key players sitting out because they didn't want to get hurt playing spring ball, it's all just going through the motions. This was a zombie season. Let it die and let's move on to next year, when hopefully real football can be played in this crappy state again.

Come on OS...nobody wants to hear about beat downs from the past. You guys were lucky to get past Oakton with their backup QB playing 3/4 of the game. It’s a W or a L and unfortunately you have more of the L’s. Props for getting there tho. You should add another W next week. Probably next year too cuz the North is down on overall team talent.. just teams playing hard.

It's always interesting to watch their opponent's plan/ reaction to the Tiger Cage Entrance. Will South County hide behind the stands like some teams do?

For all the OS People here:

-Doesn't your area have a "757 Underground" to post at? I know you feel like second level citizens in VA. Well, you are. But with the latest stimulus money, maybe you can have a place to post down there?

-My, now that Westfield has a down year, you get all uppity OS. Yeah, SC people will not invade and abuse you like the Bulldogs so you do have a chance. But, those WF parents are your ex officers and know you.

-One I will say for OS that the Northern Schools lack on the front of their webpage: A link for to a crime line. Every HS needs one of them, right OS.

That safety must be your son. If so, great football player but nobody watches what he does. You guys always have stars by players names. What did Mr Brown and Sweat do against Cville years ago. One tackle maybe. You had a few more over the years against WF. No wins. Game planning. Just saying. Do you think SC doesn’t know who the kids are. They played them last year. He can’t cover everyone. Maybe two at a time. You guys will win. Keep it classy.

1. Highland Springs (-3) @ Maury
- Highland Springs won 13-0. Mickey is shaking in his boots.

2. Massaponax @ Oscar Smith (-20)
- Smith won 21-14, not the score I expected. They finally played a team with some talent and looked flat. They were losing for a good portion of the game. Covil scored the game winning TD on a run, I believe.

3. South County (-8) @ Madison
- SoCo 29-22. Missed this one by a point. I watched this game and I have a few takeaways. As a lot of other posters have said, Brock Spalding is insanely talented. He had a catch against literally the entire Madison secondary where he caught the ball, held it just about over his head, maintained position, and that's with the DPI. Now, speaking of DPI, Madison got screwed on that late call. The refs 100% dictated this game. Madison was stopping the SoCo QB just about every single time he took it on a keeper. The DB's (#8, #9) were great, and the line was getting a good push the majority of the time. You have to give them credit for making one hell of a comeback, it's a shame the ref's did what they did.

4. Stone Bridge (-21) @ William Fleming
- SB won 46-13. Remember SB, it's always easy until the big one.

5. Tuscarora (-10) @ Salem
- Salem won 21-14. They have a good program down down there. (Not to be confused with Salem-VB)

State finals week! Congrats to every team that made it this far, and good luck on Saturday. Going to do spreads for all 6 classes, although some of you guys may not be familiar with some of these schools. Hell, neither am I! I also have to say this, regardless of who wins in ANY class, there will be an asterisk next to the win. That’s not to take anything away from the kids, that’s just my honest opinion.

Class 1: Galax @ Riverheads (-21)
- Riverheads is looking for their 5 straight state championship. They are a SW powerhouse, no doubt about it.

Class 2: Appomattox County(-3) @ Stuarts Draft
- Not familiar with either school. Appomattox has won 4 out of the last 5 state tiles in Class 2, so I’m riding with them.

- Class 3: Lafayette @ Lord Botetourt (-15)
Botetourt has a good team this year.

Class 4: Salem @ Lake Taylor (-3)
- Still can’t believe Lake Taylor is a Class 4 school now. As I said, Salem has a good program, but Lake Taylor has one thing they don’t have, athletes. Think that’ll be the difference. I would not be surprised to see Salem get it done, however I believe Lake Taylor makes it 2 in a row.

Class 5: Stone Bridge v. Highland Springs (-17) (Game @ Varina HS)
- HSHS owns Mickey & co, and I don’t see that changing this year. What is Mickey’s state title record? 1- 7? How many times has he lost to HSHS? I bet that keeps him up at night. It’s one thing to beat the hell out of Freedom-SR, Riverside, etc, but when it comes to the big boys, SB NEVER gets it done. HSHS has a great secondary and a great defensive line. They are weak at LB, SB needs to attack that. Even if they do, I doubt it will be enough.

Class 6: South County @ Oscar Smith (-13)
- Game of the week without a doubt. Highly anticipated rematch. Let me say this, if SoCo plays like they did against Madison, they will lose by 40. They will have to play a flawless game. Miska will not be able to run on Smith’s line. Spalding is going to have to step up big time. I think he will. Smith is very good this year, better than 2019. I will let the Oscar Smith poster fill you guys in on them, as I’m sure he knows more about them than me. Let’s all hope for a good game!

The Oscar Smith defense holds off Massaponax to secure a state championship berth

by Andy Hilton, recruit757

Both Massaponax and Oscar Smith are used to rolling up points on their opponents. Saturday’s battle of wills was won by the defenses.

All of the scoring took place in the first half.

Massaponax drew first blood after forcing the Tigers to turn the ball over on downs. The Panthers’ offense struggled on their first drive, but broke through when Smith loaded the box on fourth down only to have tight end Nathaniel Quance break lose and catch a Luke Morley toss that floated over his head, good for a 45-yard touchdown with 1:50 left in the first quarter.

Smith answered quickly, driving most of the length of the field to finish out the first quarter, then punching in a score at the 11:20 mark of the second quarter on a 1-yd Ethan Vasko keeper.

Oscar Smith gained some momentum as the second quarter wore on, shutting down the Massaponax option attack and converting on a Sherrod Covil 1-yard run to take their first lead of the game at 14-7.

The Panthers found good fortune with a few timely penalties and fourth down conversions to knot the game at 14. With 2:01 left in the half, facing fourth and goal from the three, Elijah Christopher pushed across the goal line with a second effort and help from his linemen.

Instead of standing pat, Oscar Smith head coach called for a big play and Vasko executed on a pass to Amonte Jones as he outraced a Massaponax defensive back to haul in the catch and race for a 59-yard touchdown.

Massaponax didn’t have a big play to answer that and went into halftime trailing 21-14, but set to receive the second-half kickoff.

At the break, it appears that both teams made the defensive adjustments necessary to stifle their opponent.

Both teams moved the ball offensively and both teams took risks on fourth down. One of the highlights of the third quarter came when Oscar Smith reached the red zone, but was pushed back. On fourth and long, the Tigers set up for a field goal only to trick the Panthers with a classic fake that had kicker Gary Parker run the ball down the home sideline for a first down. The drive ended on fourth down inside the Massaponax ten, but the Tigers had them pinned in.

Still at 21-14, the game came down to the final seconds. Massaponax burned all of their timeouts on a calculated final drive that had them set up for fourth and long from the Tiger 22 with nine second left. In earlier plays on that drive, a double reverse had failed. A halfback pass had failed. For the final play, Morley was under pressure and floated a duck that was caught by Oscar Smith’s Taeron Richardson. Richardson raced up from the end zone to snag the ball, then ran down the Massaponax sideline before being knocked out of bounds. That play ran out the clock and the Tigers celebrated their win.

“I’ve got to give it to my coaches. They’ve been here before. They told me to back up, just read and execute. If you see the ball, go get the ball,” Richardson said. “I really didn’t have to run it out, but I felt so excited. We’re going back to states. We’re going to win it this year.”

The Tigers (8-0) will face South County (9-0) for the second season in a row, this time on their home field at Oscar Smith High School. South County led James Madison only to lose the lead late in the fourth quarter, then score a touchdown and convert the two-pointer to win their semifinal game 29-22 on Saturday.

In the 2019 state championship game, held at Hampton University’s Armstrong Stadium, the Stallions held on for a 14-13 state championship win against Oscar Smith. The time for Saturday’s state title game is yet to be confirmed.

“I couldn’t be happier for these guys; answering to adversity. I told them, we have to find our Beowulf; somebody who’s going to bring the best out of us,” Oscar Smith head coach Chris Scott stated after the win. “(Massaponax) showed up. They’re well-coached. They made some big plays and we battled. Those are the games you want to be in to find out who we are. There were mistakes made but we kept battling all through it, and I’m super proud of them.”

FINAL: Oscar Smith 21, Massaponax 14

– Andy Hilton

Massaponax 7 7 0 0 – 14
Oscar Smith 0 21 0 0 – 21

M – Quance 41 pass from Morley (Hudson kick)
OS – Vasko 1 run (Parker kick)
OS – Covil 1 run (Parker kick)
M – Christopher 3 run (Hudson kick)
OS – Amonte Jones 59 pass from Vasko (Parker kick)

Some home team googles(fans) said the ball was tipped. I have a clear frame by frame endzone view and #49 from Madison did not tip nor get within 12 inches of the pass and #22 clearly arrives early and hits the WR in the back while the ball is about 4 to 6 feet away. Good call. Madison had a clear Roughing the passer call when Soco had a 3rd down and 30 on their own 10 yardline. That was a critical mistake that Madison cost themselves badly. If you have access to the game film endzone view go check it out and you will admit that was a very clear PI. I know when you lose a close game it's hard to accept the truth. Madison played a very good game but had a few personal fouls that also cost them.

I don't think whoever posted the PI photo was saying all calls were made or missed. Just that the sour grapes after a loss are so weak as all games have questionable situations and you still have to look at the entire game and find a way to overcome. Not about being classy high school kids play hard. Sometimes they make clean plays sometimes not but blaming refs for calls when Coaches and players for all team make mistakes that play into the win or loss. Also as long as you have been watching football
How often do they call offensive PI on a subtle push. If the O pushes down a DB you might get a call. Madison had how many clear personal fouls? Clean that up and maybe you win.

Why will Madison never get over the hump? Because greatness ends at Waters Field. The parents and players who don't know real calls all of a sudden say any call against them is a bad call. Those sour grapes are squashed up and produce whine year after year up and down Maple Ave. Think of any big Madison loss the last ten years talked about here or anywhere. They have never learned to say "Great game, we lost". It is not in the the DNA of their mom's fake boobs.

The game film literally shows that there was MINIMAL contact on the back of the WR. Obviously limiting personal foul calls would’ve helped Madison, but there wasn’t enough there for that to be PI imo, let the kids play.

VHSL is letting Oscar Smith supply their own referees and their own timekeeper... It's bad enough the state championship can't play at a neutral site.... Soco has to drive 3 hours and play on a grass field .. Could Oscar Smith stack the deck anymore to make sure they get a win? Should soco maybe play with 10 guys on the field or one arm tied behind their back?

Going to tech is ridiculous. UVA or Richmond or a high school in the middle is fair. There’s only so many tickets available anyways. Refs are usually awarded the opportunity to do title games. Guess nobody wants to do it with covid. The refs will be graded and any shenanigans will be noted. Refs want determine this game anyways. 38-13 OS and I’m a Nova fan??? I guess that would be a real honor and a real treat for a referee to go to Oscar Smith high School and ref a games.. Soco probably has a better chance of Oscar Smith's JV coaches r refereeing the game..SMH.. I can see these calls 3 hours away not a chance they're calling any penalties against Oscar Smith
I realize Oscar Smith has never won a state title game but damn make them earn it a little bit please.... We all know there's no way they're checking tickets at the gate and turning anybody away... Not to mention we're not driving 3 hours from the north to watch a urigged game that should have been somewhere in between... Randolph-Macon, Richmond, William and Mary... Hey let's make it as easy possible for them ...maybe they can let soco where they're away uniforms...

-Yeah, ask 75% of D1 and the NFL about grass you dumbass.

-Your spelling passed in those 757 schools. You give OS talent to the Northern Coaches who can spell and it would be a mute point playing 757 at the end of the season. And, those kids would get more D1 scholarships based on better spelling.

-757 has grass because the turf gets cut out and used in back yards and playrooms.
